First thing read the stickies in the general section here, everything you need is there
But here goes again:
Read this thread first (Downgrade thread) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2593918 then Lordmanhattan's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569904
You will probably want to flash a 290 or 136 ftf first off, this should restore your imei and calling etc
Then Downgrade to .532 using the thread above
Root the phone with the tool by Bin4ry also mentioned in the downgrade thread
Then you will want to back up the TA partition - see LordManhattan's thread
Then unlock the bootloader if you can and want to - see Lord's thread again
Then you can flash the latest FTF for your model
Once bootloader is unlocked we just have to flash a kernel with recovery (see jackie's or ChillyChan's threads)
Once you have recovery flash SuperSu update from there
All done

thank you

Just flash doom stock kernel,it has root and recovey.
You can find it in dev section.

Do you not get a software update notification if you have it check for updates under settings.
You can always flash an ftf for your specific region with what ever version you want.

Sony Xperia S Build 6.0.A.3.62
i have the build 6.0.A.3.62 with android 2.3 gingerbread. i have unlocked the bootloader but don't know how to test if it is unlocked or something else is still required. after unlocking the bootloader, when i powered up the phone, it was like i just bought the phone. it gave me those 9 steps to follow in order to setup internet connection, google account sync, etc. so how do I know if bootloader is unlocked on this phone?
now I'm dying here to root the phone lol. its been 20 hours i've been messing with the phone. right in this thread pratyush suggested to download the flashtool. but when i goto the flashtool website to download the latest version, the link is broken. file not found.
so i'm just wondering if someone can give step-by-step instructions for the build 6.0.A.3.62 and help me to root this device please. would appreciate your help a lot.
thanks for the help ppl ..

the latest one for my phone is 6.1.A.0.452 but all i wish to know, will it be easier to root the phone with 452 build? will i have to unlock the bootloader again after updating my phone to ics? i'm really a newbie and stupid when it comes to playing with electronic devices. but i can follow instructions accurately. sony gives a warning while upgrading that i wont be able to go back to 2.3 if i upgraded to ics. so all i wish to know, will it be easier to root the phone with present software build 62 or will it be better to upgrade and then root the phone on build 452?
please advise. thank you for your help.

You can go back to 2.3 just fine by flashing a ftf. There are a couple different methods to root ics. One needs an unlocked bootloader (flashing prerioted system image) the other does not (flashing multiple times while running some batch files). Both methods have posts in the dev section.

Easiest way is to unlock the booloader and flash the prerooted system.img you can then relock the bootloader if need be. That's for both ICS and GB.

You dont need to root to flash an firmware. Just saying.
Upgrade to ICS. Its much better and it would be much easier to help you because everyone uses it..
Good luck.
alrighty .. i tried to update the software but after downloading some odd 500 MB worth updates, it says "your software is modified, so can't be upgraded"

ok .. so i thought to do a factory reset on the phone settings > privacy > factory reset
it did factory reset and then i tried to upgrade the software. same thing ... it says, upgrade cant be done because the phone has modified software. i guess i will have to keep 2.3 gingerbread and then try to root the software. am i running out of options?

OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 for rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

That version can't be rooted using bin4ry's method via .bat file or flashtool. Either unlock the bootloader and flash a rooted kernel or flash back to an older firmware that can be rooted and OTA update.

Assuming that you have installed following:
- Android ADB
- latest Flashtools & (driver) - antivirus disabled
- mobile is readily getting into flashmode and fashboot mode.
- usually i dont go into these hasles i install and flash CWM and then install custom ROM which are far better than stock rom.

[SOLVED] Root Access 4.4.4

Hey guys im back after smashing my beloved xperia z (which i had mastered the ins and outs of) and reluctantly replacing it with a HTC ONE m7 which was the most terrible phone i have ever used in my life.... i have plonked a good bit of cash on a z2 and I AM LOVING IT
I had updated to the latest version of KK but i am hearing mixed reports that a root is not available for this version.
If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be fabulous.
Thank you in advance

Hello
I see you are totally green on this.
Well, im kinda green too, but I have had a lot of help from @xda and now I can manage to do some stuff with my telephone.
The first thing you have to do is BACKUP!!! This is always important.
Well, then lets get to it.
The XPERIA Z2 has a locked bootloader. This means that it cannot flash any roms, custom or other without being unlocked. When you unlock the bootloader, you delete all files on the phone, (don’t ask me how, it just does) and also deletes a partition called TA. The TA-partition contains DRM-keys, to explain that, @Envious_Data might help.
Anyway, when you have root, you can backup the TA, BEFORE you flash any custom ROM, or the ROM with ROOT. That way you will always be able to go back to scratch. Without ROOT on 4.4.4 you need to downgrade to 4.4.3, ROOT and backup the TA-partition before you even start thinking about unlocking bootloader.
(search the XDA, Google (use XDA in the end for XDA results) XDA-TV and you will find tons and tons of stuff. Once you understand some, it will come fast to you.)
I have gathered some threads here for you to read, and I hope this will work for you too.

When done, notify me.

To root the Z2 and get dual recovery on 4.4.2 follow these steps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/how-to-root-firmware-314-t2821619
Then you need to follow the instructions in this thread, it's much easier than what it seems

Also, no need to backup TA unless you wanna unlock your bootloader

[Q] Newbie here and I need a little help

Hi
First time using android phone. I just got a Z2 D6503 model with 5.0.2 Lollipop android (in the UK), build number: 23.1.A.1.28. I would like to root my phone as some apps need to the phone to be rooted in order to work properly. So can you guys please suggest any that I can read on?
Also, I saw some posts around said that you should not mess up with bootloader (a partition which holds Sony's special features according to my narrow knowledge). As I just started to use the phone, is there anything I need to know so I don't **** my phone up in the first place, which many newbies did, 'cause I have no backup phone at the moment. Just send me some thing to read. Any help will be appreciated.
Additionally, is the stock rom of Z2 good enough? Or I should flash some other cooked rom? I don't need fancy things, just an efficient system that helps me do the work.
Thank you very much for your patience!
Cheers!
Congratulations on your new Z2!
You can read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3147932 for some explanations and a way to root.
Stock ROM is more then enough if you plan on rooting just to get your apps working

Never mind, I'n reading. Just too excited asking dump questions
Hi
I followed this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/root-t3108230 to root my phone but it seems not to work.
Do you have a solid guide to root a Z2 phone? And how to backup all of my data before doing that?
OK, I have XZdual recovery 2.8 installed on my Z2, I check root using root checker and it said the phone was rooted successfully. Using ROM manager from clockmod, I also see that I have the recoveries installed. However, when I turn off the phone and on again, it does vibrate at press, then after Sony logo shows up, a red LED flash, I cant get to recovery by either pressing up and down buttons several times. What is wrong with my recovery?

What you should do is keep reading.
I only got a Z2 recently, I read everything and downgraded to 4.4.2 to root it without unlocking the boot loader. Then I backed up my TA partition in case I decide to go custom. After that I flashed it back to 5.0.2 keeping root.
I managed to do all of that by reading the information already provided. Stop being so bloody lazy.

Yes it is. You put the zip file on the SD card and shut off your phone. When you restart the phone again, it will vibrate and the led will light up, press the volume down button a couple of times and then chose the option "install zip", or something similar. You can place it where you like, without wiping any data!
Use either this: https://mega.co.nz/#!QZc23YbK!gi5mrwEQNA63565s3BCaeQrYiRkt0pd_HNmb_K16e8E or this http://www.mediafire.com/download/0b8828828cmf58c/Xperia_Z2_eXistenZ_Y_v2.0.0.zip for download
Since you already are on eXistenz, you do NOT have to wipe data, and therefore won't lose anything
