I'm a newbie in need of some help.
What I'm after is a way to permanently disable or remove wifi access from the s3 in a way that will stick even after a factory reset.
I'd like to stay as close to stock as possible.
I have found "completely-remove-wifi-from-android-rom-including-settings-layout" on stackoverflow which seems ideal but I suppose will require atleast compiling the kernel which will require some expert (or at least detailed) advice.
So far I've managed a quick and dirty solution intentionally recreating an issue people who edited wpa_supplicant.conf ran into by changing some file permissions setting in init.rc, but it seems less than ideal.
Your input is very welcome.
just open the phone and get the wifi antenna out and that does it

It is a possibility but one i would like to avoid if at all possible.
I would try deleting the wifi stuff out of the rom first .

More details might be needed, which wifi stuff do you mean ?
I just about managed to unpack and repack boot.img I suppose its possible to remove all the wifi related stuff from the init scripts, not sure if it'll get a different result than what I've done so far.

Thanks anyhow, perhaps you'll find the time later or someone else will have a better idea.
No hurry, I'll only be able to check back in a couple of days in any case.

Well after a false start using a guide on how to preroot an sII which resulted in a brick (for some reason the s3 couldn't mount the repakced system.img) I've managed to use dsixda's guide and android kitchen.
So display wise - removing the wifi files from /etc/permissions seems to remove wifi from the settings layout. but its still available from the kies via wifi and probably other places.
Functionality wise removing the wifi files from /etc/wifi does stop it from functioning.
So its a success, still I would appreciate any tips on making it less crude and any pointers on making a regular rom rather than an update zip.

Found a good guide in Galaxy S III General called '[HOW TO] Root it Yourself (w/o increasing counter)' only difference from the guide i used seems to be size you give to mkuserimg.sh but there you go so thats one issue handled.

ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO ENABLE THE ICS AD HOC CONNECTIONS ON ICS STOCK ROM?
I FOUND A LOT OF WPA_SUPPLICANT FILES, BUT NO ONE WAS WORKING UNTIL NOW.
I also found here in the forum an apk named wifi ad-hoc enabler but seems to work only on hc3.2.
Can Someone help me?

Could you post the way it's supposed to do this? I'd like to learn how but i'm, as you can imagine, a newbie at this.
Update: i've found a temporary Workaround:
First of all notice that i needed the ad-hoc connection to use my tab in junction to my android phone when i'm on the move.
Said that I've found the way to share the phone connection via bluetooth: Obviously isn't fast as a proper wifi, but until someone (daveba ?) will patch the wpa_supplicant, this is the only solution.
On my phone i've downloaded from the play store Foxfi. There I have activated the bluetooth dun connection.
On tablet side i've downloaded from the play store pdanet tablet & configured to pair with my phone.
And ... TAADAA!!! i had back my connection on the move.
I repeat, it's not a proper solution, but until someone more coding skilled than me get the patch done, this will work.

You need to download the AOSP sources for ICS and set up a compile environment and then patch up the wpa_supplicant sources as per my previous post and then recompile and provide a CWM flashable zip.

Have you ever thought about writing an how-to guide related to this stuff?? i think could be very interesting. i think could be a sticky topic here in xda. A lot of people writing about wpa_supplicant but most of them posted only already patched files but never the entire process to do it.

I'll try to download it and extract the wpa supplicant. Maybe this time i'll be luckyer. And obviously, if this will work i'll share here.
Cross your fingers, please.
SAD UPDATE: I tried to use the wpa_supplicant e wpa_conf files on task650's ics rom but unfortunately the tablet has working wifi but doesn't recognize my wifi tethering from the phone. So for who as me don't want to use non stock rom (mostly for stability reason at the moment) can't have wifi thetering recognized.
I'm starting to suppose that on ics things are quite different from honeycomb on this topic. Maybe Someone whit good coding skill should try to help us.
And at the moment my workaround it's the only solution avaiable.
Thank you very much Chinasky71
Unfortunately, it seems that FoxFi is not available for Nokia E series phones.
I guess I have to change my phone this time....
Anymore brilliant ideas???

You can still use your phone!
Nokia phones have dun connection via bluetooth, so pair your phone with your galaxy tab and start pdanet.
From there use the configure button, and select your phone after that is appered in your list.
At that point you'd be ready to go!
Let me know if it works.

Forgive me first off if this post exists somewhere else in this forum. I have looked with very little result. I recently rooted my device Cm-10.1 all went well. What I am missing or was not included was the My Net app from the tablet. A lot of people said you could find it on the ASUS site .. ummm NO unless I missed it. Could someone attach that APP to this post please.
here it is, idk if it runs on cm10, i pulled it from the cleanrom! maybe the asus apps dont run on cm10? try and tell me!

I am wondering how you got it to install. I am using CM 10.1 night 2013-0101-Nightly. I have tried it on several other versions as well and it will not install is this by chance a permissions issues ?
How are yoiu installing it? You will need to push to system/app manually and change permissions yourself I would imagine.

Doubt that will work.
Here I have made an installer for you - try flashing this. I suspect it won't work on anything but a stock based rom due to some reliance on Asus framework files.
Let me know how you get on.

sorry friend Idk to edit the package too
if you are rooted you can try flashing the latest gapps package that should fix this and try fixing permissions
if you are not rooted then wait for someone to edit it for you or do a search and do it yourself

I know this might sound strange but since you are back to full unrooted stock, why not call Sprint tech support and see what they say? I am at a loss for ideas at this point. I wish I could help you further.
I doubt you've tried EVERY ROM out there,
For example, my ROM has it as long as you don't go flashing random themes and files onto your phone.

dont change your mac-address its a bad idea.
with some research i may have found a way to actually have whatsapp on two devices(dont have 2 devices so cant test it)
Heres the deal:
Install xposed framework on your device, if youre willing to change your macaddress you should be able to do this as well.
after that get Xprivacy working.
make a full backup with titaniumbackup from whatsapp and tranfers/install it on your second device.
get your IMEI and MAC from your first device (where whatsapp is working)
open up xprivacy and spoof the IMEI and MAC that you got from the step above.
now open up whatsapp for the first time, it shoudnt ask to reactivate or anything.
if it doesnt work try spoofing other stuff, im typing this without any tests but if it worked heres my paypal: paypal.me/Ruthger.
good luck hit me up if you need help
(if anything goes wrong im not to blame, be sure to have stock firmware at hand if the xposed framework bootloops your device!)
