[Q] Gmail-app not syncing instantly - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I tried to do my due diligence before posting this. While this has been addressed in the past I didn't find any solution.
Anyhow, since a couple of days ago my Gmail-app (4.5.2) is not giving me instant notifications for new e-mails. I haven't flashed anything new or something along those lines. I did however disable some autostarts for Google Services Framework in order to resolve a wakelock, but that was 4 weeks ago.
Some symptoms:
It seems to sync eventually - this morning I found a notification for an e-mail that was received 6 p.m. the day before.
If I go to Settings > Google account > Sync Gmail I can manually force it to sync, which produces the notification.
Upon entering the app I find the e-mails there
Things I've tried so far:
Ensured that Sync is activated in the Notification Center-thingy you drag from the top
Ensured that sync is activated in the Gmail-app
Clear Gmail app-data > reboot
Clear Google Play Services app-data > reboot
Clear Dalvik cache (out of desperation more than anything)
Running Push Notification Fixer
Removing Google account and signing in again
So, the core of the problem seems to be that the app for whatever reason isn't syncing at the desired intervals anylonger: so instead of pushing, the mails needs to be pulled (semi-manually, it seems).
Many thanks for any input on how to solve this!
PS.
Kernel: 3.0.31-Siyah-s2-v6.0b4+
ROM: I9100XWLSS (4.1.2)

Hi Nollan,
It looks like I'm having the same issue as you. I see that no one responded to your question, but I was wondering if you ever figured out how to fix it.
Thanks,
shingy

Exchange Corporate email settings problem solution [JB 4.1.1]

I recently solved a real pain of an email issue I was having, and wanted to pass along the experience. I had tried searching these forums for several days, but didn't quite find my problem, and didn't find the solution all in one place. With that in mind, I'm hoping this information helps someone, even if a bit of it may be covered in other threads (sorry if so).
I had upgraded recently to JB 4.1.1, and was having a lot of problems getting my corporate/exchange email account to work. The calendar and contacts would work sometimes, and the email never got past the "waiting for sync" screen. Anytime the calendar and contacts would work, they would break after a reboot of the phone.
I also found that sometimes exchange account would stick around after it stopped working, and other times it would disappear (from the Android settings > accounts list) completely. I had set the accounts up both through the stock email app, and through a third - party email app (Enhanced Email, a good app).
I tried deleting and recreating the accounts, with varying settings (port numbers, accepting all security certificates, etc.). Later on, I went to my company's online web access for Exchange, and deleted all the mobile connections so that it would create a new connection for my current phone and ROM. I recreated the account (for what seemed like the 50th time) after that. Still no good.
The thing that made the difference: I finally read a tip somewhere to force stop the (stock) email client, and clear its cache and data. After that, the email app needed to be set up again, but email synched for the first time since I installed this ROM, and my calendar and contacts work reliably. It's been several days and reboots, and no further problems have come up.
I hope this helps someone, and again, apologies if the information is duplicative. I couldn't find it all in one place, and was really beating my head against the wall trying to find a fix.

Hi there, I think im glad i found this thread although not sure it will help with my corporate mail problem. My problem exists only with contacts not syncing from my corporate exchange account. My mail and calendar is ok just no contacts sync.
You mention to force stop the stock email client, can you advise the steps and exact name of the process? Do you mean in manage apps - All - Email ? I cant seem to stop that process its all greyed out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, due to my role i really need my exchange contacts to sync.
Cheers,
Hi guys,
My experience is different.
If you have problems to sync your email you need to clear all previous mobile connections from outlook (via outlook web access) and set up your account from zero on the device.
Quick question why do you use a third party email client? Do you have Samsung device? Got the same problem and had to move to a asop (CM10)
Samsung email client and exchange doesn't work well since the original Galaxy.

solution for me
For me what solved was a solution I found in another post here in the forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774978&page=2
In summary:
"Settings --> Data Usage --> Menu --> and check Auto Sync Data
Try setting up Exchange account again and you'll see the prompt to activate a Device Administrator this time. "

Google Apps not connecting and syncing issues [Huawi u9508 4.1.2]

Hey,
I have a Huawei Honor 2 [U9508B 2GB RAM model] running EMUI B628.
I seem to be getting very strange syncing errors since my update. ALL google apps except for Play Store do not want to sync with Google, except on some very strange and rare occasions. I need to be able to access Gmail on my smartphone. It's one of my most important apps, but Gmail cannot sync properly, often staying at the Waiting for Sync screen for weeks on end.
I have tried reflashing my phone, but that was only a temporary remedy. The problem continued a mere 2 days after reflash.
Because I cleared the Google Framework Services data, YouTube is no longer connected to my account, so when I tap sign in, "There is a problem with your network" pops up a mere millisecond later.
Stuff I have tried:
1. Disable and re-enable auto sync a million times
2. Tap sync now a billion times
3. Remove account and re-add it. (I have only tried this once, but when I did, I couldn't sign in. it just said "couldn't sign in - couldn't establish a reliable connection to the server")
4. Clear the data of anything google
5. Clear cache and dalvik-cache in recovery
Is there anything else I could try? I've had this phone for just two months. I'd hate to go out and buy another phone.
Thanks!

[Q] Reminders wont save in Google Now

So I'm having issues with google now and reminders.
Be it manually entering or by voice, it shows the reminder saving, but then never appear in my upcoming reminders list.
And obviously, no reminder is played when the time or location comes.
I'm running stock note 2 rooted.
I tried updating to the 4.4 google search along with the launcher, but that didnt fix the issue. So I revert back.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Well, I decided to upgrade (complete wipe) and using a new rom.
Reminders still do not work.
They do work in google Keep ... which is only a work around. However, I found out something interesting.
#1 - I'm not the only one having this problem. And it seems to be random, across multiple devices, including iOS.
#2 - I tried logging into google now with my other google account and it worked!
So something is up between the google account and Now's sync... I can only assume.
Does anyone know of a setting withing gmail or your google account that can cause problems? I tried comparing my two accounts, but couldnt figure it out
Sounds like a Google issue for sure. I'd report it to them.
Experiencing the same problem

I am having PRECISELY the same issue. It started at random, but now my Google account will not display notifications for reminders. One day they were all working perfectly. The next day, they all just stopped cold turkey.
I used my backup Gmail account, and BAM they worked! Just for that account however. After I switched back to my primary Gmail account, they still would not work. I tried so many roms and methods, but I can only conclude that it must be a google account problem. I have been all over Google Dashboard and through every single setting.
I am running the Galaxy Note 3 on T-mobile (hltetmo) with JediElite 4.4.2. Has anyone experienced the same issue?
Thank guys!
UPDATE:
After starting to look again (and actually coming across my own question on google lol) I got it working!
It must have been an update that changed or even added the option.
Just for the hell of it, i was going through the "customize" options and found "Continue to get reminders"
IT was set to "no"
As soon as it turned to yes, all of my test reminders showed up.
recap:
open Google Now > select the "magic wand" on the bottom right > Select Everything Else > set "Continue to get reminders" to yes

Help - Google auto sync issues

In the last couple of weeks I noticed that gmail is not always up to date. Started looking into it and found that auto sync for google account is not working right. It always syncs manually. If I don't touch it - it syncs randomly. Sometimes emails arrive 3-4 hours after they get to gmail. Other times they get to the phone in time. If I open google account from settings - accounts, I can see the times it synced all the elements and sometimes they're way behind.
All the auto-sync is enabled on the phone. I tried clearing data and cache, removed and readded google account, finally did a full reset last night. This morning it didn't show emails that arrived in the middle of the night. I went into the account and forced it to sync. It worked and 2 hours later still working but I'm sure it'll stop at some point. Are there any logs I can look at? any ideas how to troubleshoot this?
you didnt say what ROM & version this is

Question GMAIL

Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?
Even the most experienced sometimes miss things.

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.
If it was not, then it is a shame I couldn't help.
But as a response to your comment: No. I don't think people here are idiots. I just think you are one.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. If you still ask people if they have done so, you obviously think we are idiots, since you ask a question that has already been answered. Grow up please.
Edit: Here let me quote it for you:
I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find.

Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
