[Q] What Kernels support 4.3 ROMs? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So, our Kernel situation is a bit of a mess...I recently went back to a couple UCMD3 ROMs, and for the life of me, I couldn't find it explicitly stated anywhere (except for one project, which was terribly outdated) what Kernels are supported where. I tried every Kernel out there on a few AOSP Roms (4.2.2 and 4.3), as well as a couple stock-based ROMs, and I only got 1 kernel to boot with the stock 4.1.2 based ROMs, and Uber is the only one that will boot with the 4.3-based AOSP ROMs, but it's been present during my SystemUI issues.
With those SystemUI issues, the random reboots, and a boatload of crashes being attributed to Non-4.3 based recoveries, and kernels, I think it'd be beneficial for us to have something clearly stated, even if it's supported merely by anecdotal proof.
What Kernels work for you? And what issues have you had while using them (we're not attributing problems to the kernels, we're just looking for combination problems. If everything is working great with your current set up, that information is even MORE valuable.
So what Kernel/ROM combination(s) are you using (have you used), and how is/was everything?

I always use the kernel included in the rom, now I have PacMan 4.3 Rom, the truth, I have not tried different kernels but I'll try, sorry I can not help

I always try and stick with kernel provided also, the developers put it in, so it is supposed to work.
I noticed the Super Everything has not been updated lately, but I really don't think there are as many options as used to be with everybody working feverishly on 4.3 rom's. I am also getting concerned that some are moving on to a different device. although locked bootloaders may keep them away from newest.
on 4.3, with the exception of the stock CM kernel, Uber is going to be your only option.
on 4.2, I believe you can still get the older 4.2 version from the nightly thread. I have not seen anything on any 4aces kernel in months it seems. I think BLOWNFUZE makes his own kernel for his AOKP, but I am not sure he has it extracted or for use with anything else but AOKP.
on 4.1.2, there is PTmr's Fuse kernel, but I think most/all of those links are down. might have to get a copy from someone else. I think there is an older version of Fuse kernel that works on 4.0, but I didn't have the Note then, so cant say for sure. BLOWNFUZE also made a 4.1.2 kernel, but that was specifically for BIGFAU and his BLACK JELLY.
in my opinion the 4.1.2's don't need alternate kernel as they are so solid already. it would be like applying a protective coating of wax on a candle, kind of unnecessary.
it is possible that our beloved Note may be at a critical point in development it seems. again, with 4.3........4.4??? .......new devices hitting market and new bootloaders being locked may be the cause of our limbo status. I may be wrong and sort of hope I am, we shall see. locked bootloaders may have some returning to action.
and I may be missing something in my list, it is just my opinion and what I see.
everyone should feel free to correct me, I am sure I am wrong about something, usually am

I pretty much agree with the Capt, although I do like to OC a little. This link will take you to some older kernels for our phone. http://goo.im/devs/flappjaxxx/i717/kernel

I've got a copy of 4aces 4/21 kernel and root box 4/20 and they are my backup which I usually go back to cuz it has been my best experience on jb. I went like a month without a rr..... But once again everyone's setups are totally different so what works for one person does not for others... Which you peeps prolly already know that shiz. =)

Best ROM ?

I will be getting at&t SGII next week, so just wondering which ROM would you guys recommend? Stable, fast and that looks good.. thanks.
They are all good. Try them all, that's going to be the best way to see which you like most.

Stable? Avoid anything that comes from netchip. I don't think any kernel he's posted here has even successfully booted.
Other than that you should be fine right now, it's hard to go wrong.
It's all opinion based. Go to the development forums and read up on all the comments, and come up with a conclusion that way. Or try them all.

so far from what I'm reading I like either Serendipity or UnNamed.

That's my choice. Best battery life and all the stock functions are present and stable.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I think some of the less visible stock functions may be missing from Serendipity. I remember over on the Infuse community, a few people were unhappy about the loss of SNS functionality. (SNS is an alternate method of syncing social network stuff like Facebook, its functionality is slightly different from that provided by the Facebook app.)
The problem is that SNS is also known to be a battery drainer - not a horrible one, but it does have a clearly noticeable detrimental effect on the battery.
For 95%+ of people, the social networking functions of the Facebook app are fine and they won't miss SNS at all, plus they'll be happy about the improved battery life that comes from nuking SNS.

They're all derived from stock, except for CM7/MIUI.
Usually the ROM changelog will indicate what has changed from stock. Right now things aren't too divergent as the device has only been out for 3 weeks.
One exception is Perception - that's derived from I9100 stock.
This is generally how it is on any Samsung phone - you have stock-derived ROMs, CM7/MIUI, and in some cases depending on commonality with other devices, cross-device ROM ports from a similar device that receives more frequent updates.

After a lot of time testing and comparing all the custom roms found here in these XDA forums for our
SGS2 i777 phone here is my conclusion:
The very BEST custom rom available for our phones at the present time is GTG's UnNamed v1.04 custom rom.
It has the most features, user customizations and options available at this current time.
I have spent countless hours testing and comparing all the other roms which are currently available for our phones
and found that GTG's rom is not only the best, but also the most reliable and error free when compared to any of
the other roms which are available for our phones at the present time.
If you are interested in the UnNamed rom, it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474
This is strictly my personal opinion so take it for what it's worth. (most likely less than 2 cents)

Cool thanks, I thought so. I do read the changelogs and descriptions prior to flashing. No disrespect was intended as I am glad for all the hard work and development the Devs put in! Thanks for clarifying.
I have a question, These Roms Do they lack functions as to Stock, like I read where one has problems with camera functions so if you use your camera stay with the stock, So can you elaborate which ones has less functions and are any full functional ?
Serendipity 8 is the best Rom I've encountered yet. my battery easily lasts for 30-36hrs depending on my usage of the device.
The rom is clean and runs smooth. try it out.

No. that's not the way to look at it...
For example the only custom rom which has video issues and does not
have all the features and options in the camera when compared to the
stock or custom roms is the CyanogenMod 7.1 rom, but that does not
mean that all the custom roms have camera/video issues.
You need to try them all and see which one fits your needs the best.
Or if you want to be told which rom to put on your phone, go with Serendipity 8.
i would def say serendipity 8. battery life is insane and performace is so smooth

I agree completely, can't wait for the next update

Whats up with the notification bar?

I have no clue why or who ever in Samsung development messed this up, but when you stream flash videos in full screen the notification does not auto hide. To me this is completely unacceptable as it ruins the possibility of "full screen" and it can actually damage the oled in these phones.
I think this fix should be a MUST for any developer currently making rooms for this phone. The only from currently that I know of that fixes it is Cyanogen.. but I do want a stable ICS and oh boy can't we all dream of a perfect aosp from... dreams of super fast clean friendly user experience...

Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms? The only thing I'm wondering is why has this not been addressed by the community? Why is this still "OK" and why are trolls immediately the only ones present in this forum?

AS said above, it looks like your are running ICS which is in beta and has not been officially released, you are complaining about an unfinished, unofficially released BETA rom.
You may need some time of reflection and a lot of reading to understand what you are doing......
Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms?
You answer your question yourself why build a rom based on a half assed buggy beta release .
Put in a very simple way . Why waste time on a buggy beta build that may be very different come release day .
When ICS is released and if a dev thinks its worth fixing your problem i am sure they will .
jje
OK it sounds like no one understood , I will attempt to explain this better. This is NOT an ICS problem this problem is with EVERY rom including stock update strait from Kies. I went as far as contacting Samsung to get a fix, but as you can see in my profile I live in the US and the US Samsung will not help me with my UK phone. Why everything between us is so divided beats me but still the issue remains.
As I stated currently the only rom that fixes it is Cyanogen but just as JJ stated why use a buggy beta when the release will be much different/better. Also I am currently running ICS and have not encountered a single bug. Everything works perfect except for Samsung's stupid attempt to burn in my screen. I don't know about everyone else but I paid $580 for this phone and the last thing I want is a permanent" 3g" on my screen...

Then give us more information. Saying that streaming videos don't go full screen is no where near enough. What ROM, website, browser etc are you using because the last time I tried this (Not long after the S2 was released) it worked just fine. I tried a 720p video from megaupload and it went full screen just fine. Same with youtube/youtube app. Give more information, not attitude. Also, i'd wager than there is zero chance of your display burning in a 3G icon. Perhaps the full notification bar if you use MIUI/a white or light theme but I highly doubt the majority of people will experience any burn in, never mind such a small specific burn in.
Fair enough.. more info. I usually run completely stock and decided to play around with ics. A main site I stream with is twitch.TV (I am a big starcraft2 player and use the pro streams to get better) while I'm at work I watch for hours sometimes 7 hours straight. This WILL cause burn in.
When the problem occurs:
Watching ANY true flash video online(not YouTube app) while in full screen mode in any browser or Rom besides cyanogen.
If you don't believe me test it yourself. Go to twitch.TV pick a stream let the video load and click the full screen button. If you have a rom that the notification bar disappears let me know and you won't hear.me "moan" anymore.
Or maybe one of you super nice Brits can call UK Samsung and get an official fix. The number is 08702420303.

Download the diff, check for relevant changes (there's not many for fullscreen) and mod your own browser. Before you ask, I'm not going to hold your hand on this one, and am not willing to do it for you either (I don't use an ICS ROM).
Not asking for any hand holding or hand outs for that matter.. one last question can it be done completely from the phone?
Actually nvm that browser mod will not work with ics. Even states in that post "should be comparable with 2.3.x roms.

Sure it will, you just have to be willing to put in some work. Namely, as I already said, downloading the diff, checking for relevant changes (I think there's only two changes relating to full screen) and getting them into your Browser.apk. You're probably going to need to do some reading.
Judging by this part of your post:

After stoock ICS not charging

I used mobile odin to install the att stock ics and now my phone will not charge.
I get the lighting bolt symbol but there is no animation and the phone will not charge the battery. Nothing has changed on the hardware end and what used to be no problem is now a pita.
Anyone have a soloution and running into this?
Yesterday after I flashed, I charged my phone for an hour and the % stayed the same. It seemed to get better later on (Although I shutdown to charge) but I haven't tried charging since.
I've been running it since last night (also used Mobile Odin) but haven't had any issues charging. I've had it connected to a wall charger, USB cable, and an external battery thing from Monoprice - all have worked great.
Could possibly be a bad flash or something random like that.
I also used the Mobile Odin method and have not had any issues with charging using wall charger or usb. I also noticed that there is no charging animation, just the lightening bolt. Maybe you had a bad flash?
I got it working after turning it off and taking the battery out.

Given some glaring bugs in this build (battery stats FC and repeating alarms don't work), I don't think this is the final build of ICS for us. But it is supprisingly stable build. I have no problem use it as my daily driver.
Plus the fact that now we have screen display mode options in settings reinforces my belief that AT&T hasn't had a chance to water down this build yet

Thanks for this! It worked for me although I think I'm going to try an ICS rom instead.
Another point of fact, what we have was released by Samsung and it was not specifically for this phone. AT$T had nothing to do with it. Stable is a pipe dream until there is an official AT$T i777 release. Calling this 'stock AT$T ICS' is misleading. The devs here are great, but it has only been a week since source dropped.
No, UCLC2 leaked here is specifically for AT&T I777 with all AT&T bloatware in tow. It is not some kind of I9100 transplant

someone needs to check their facts... yes, samsung built it but it was built for the i777 specifically, Not another phone. And I'm sure AT&T had something to do with it considering their bloat was already on it. I'm sure it's also one of the builds they are testing.
You also have been telling people there is no real ICS, well what do you consider real ics? One that's officially pushed out by AT&T? the version with a UI overlay, and bloat? real ICS? haha Real ICS is AOSP IMO. Pure android, not crap the carriers push out.
It has only been about a week since source dropped but already the development on AOSP roms like cm9 and aokp is going well. There are a few bugs but nothing major (depending on your needs) I dont mind waiting for video capture to work on AOSP as I never use my video cam on my phone anyway. I do use netflix and crackle but not having them work at this moment is not enough reason not to use it. I'm actually really impressed how stable these roms are considering source dropped a week ago. A deal breaker for me is calls not working, buttons not working, wifi and gps not working.. everything else I could pretty much live with until it gets sorted out
What I said was there's no real ICS for our phones, meaning what we have right now is someone elses cobbled together i9100 port of ICS, not an official AT$T release of ICS for the i777. A leak is not an official release, BTW.
This forum has suddenly exploded with posts of people having issues because they are in too big a hurry to try something that is still not quite ready and/or they do not know what they are doing. It is overwhelming the forum with ICS issues and we don't even have a true ICS version yet. There should be a single thread in Dev for each of these ported ROMs where early adopters can look for help instead of clogging up General and Q&A with all this BS. I think all the ICS threads confuse people into thinking there is an actual release instead of just these ported ROMs and makes them try something they shouldn't. Just sayin'.

No one is claiming that UCLC2 is official release of ICS but it certainly is not an i9100 port. It is an early build by Samsung specifically for i777 and leaked. Read.
Just putting this out there, the battery life off my ICS was initially horrible.
After resetting the phone I have 91% battery after 9hrs off charge, have not been doing a lot granted but that is still pretty damn good.
I think the main problem with the leak was that it included a boot loader and people that installed it lost root and cwm.
It wasn't until task and others cleaned it up and removed the boot loader that it really became more user friendly.
Personally I waited for the CM9 official nightlies for our model to start a few days ago before jumping on ICS. I really liked touchwiz until I tried CM7. Not sure if I would ever go back now to be honest.

As many of us Captivate owners learned, these 'leaks' are rarely more than just Samsung's way to get over-eager users to do much of their debugging for them. Gotta love the early adopters.

I'm certainly very happy with the Captivate GB leak running on my phone back in Aug 2011. The official GB release didn't come until Feb 2012, long after I sold my Captivate. So, ultimately it is up to individuals to decide whether or not to install leaked ROMs. It's more benefits than hassles. I don't think we will see official release until the end of 2012 or even 2013. I don't think I will still be using my SGS2 after this summer.

So, ultimately it is up to individuals to decide whether or not to install leaked ROMs. It's more benefits than hassles.

Actually, it has been rather quiet comparing to the crying help for bricked phones by flashing non-i777 ROMs. All they complain are not be able to root etc.

[Q] Differences in types of Roms.

Can someone tell me the differences in the various types of roms for ics. like the stock ics rom , cm7 ics rom , cm9 ics rom and miui ics rom. and also which one is better and best
CM9 ics is smoothest but fm radio, video recording or hdmi isnt working. Stock is not that smooth but everything is working, also miui is based on stock (i think) so not that smooth but working everything, you could try new aosp 4.0.4 wich is not based on stock or cm9, aosp 4.0.4 haves everything working but hdmi and fm radio, but its smooth as cm9
Ah man, not another the best/better rom thread....
Basic difference is based on stock or based on custom code, cm9 for example. Which means, some of roms will run on locked bootloaders, and some of them will only work with custom kernels which require unlocked bootloader.
All those info are written in each rom's first(few) post(s).
Now to explain why I wrote that in first part of my post. There is no best and better rom, it's up to personal experience. Some rom's can be faster, but with no extra options, so as you can see, someone will go for faster, someone will go for extra options.
Go and read and try, find what's best for you.

i am as off now using Ka18which is based on stock havnt gone to ka 19 since it has many issues and just waiting for that to b resolved. but i wanted to know if its the best or not.
like i am more into customization and looks . i would prefer something where i can customize and at the same time i want it to be smooth and not hang in between.
in ka18 the net is too slow for me all the time. while all work well.
fm radio is not imp to me and hdmi also is ok as long as it doesnt decrease the quality of the display in phone. so would u suggest using cm9 or aosp 4.0.4 and which rom do you suggest

ya i know there were many posts before but i was never properly satisfied with all answers there and all that i read. i have so far only tried the based on stock roms. looked in cm9 and all but many times let it go cos data is not working in many and thats something very imp for me. i dont mind the rom not having ne extra options as that can be added. as of now the kernel also i use is night elf rc3 which seems to be fine even though i have issues with data and wifi disconnection often. based on speed which would u suggest?
I think it would be beneficial to be able to read a list of some of the more popular ROMs and some of the highlights from each one. Does anyone know if there is such a compiled list?
I would love to have the ability to over/under clock and a little more customization would be great too. So I've decide I will root my SGS3, just not sure with what ROMs yet. I realize that the best way is to probably try a lot out, but with my job I don't have a lot of time to do so.
I also had some question as well. Can you use TacTiles to set the cpu speeds (under/over clocking)? I would love to have it set to under clock when I get to the office since I don't use it much there and would love some extra battery life during the day. Are there certain ROMs you can do this with, or will any work?

Not that I recommend flashing roms for Galaxy S3, seriously why would you do that?

I've been using MIUI V4 (V6 Supercharged) with alliance kernel mod and found it to be very smooth without overclocking.... And yeah everything is working fine(oh! there was a bug in compass... but little bit of searching gave me the fix in the same thread).

Because I don't like Touch Wiz, that's why. And I would love some more customization and better battery life. I came from Blackberry which had tons of custominzation options stock. Now I have to download a dozen apps to get that much customization. A little bit annoying, but for the most part I'm liking the rest of the android features and def the speed.
OP, two things:
1) The best way to get an understanding of any ROM is to flash it and try it and see if it works for you. Everyone is going to have a different opinion and no matter how much reading you do on it, it is not going to replicate the actual experience of using it first hand.
2) DO NOT SPAM THESE FORUMS WITH ONE WORD/ICON POSTS
Thank you,

Best AOSP or CM9?

I have been looking through the forum trying out a few At&t Galaxy Note ROMs but i haven't tried an AOSP or CM9 ROM and I was wondering if anyone could show me the best one for the At&t Galaxy Note(battery life, customization, stability, everything working, MUST have a GREAT equalizer, and being lag free.):fingers-crossed:
really the bet one is what works for you - each of us have different standards and things we look for in a ROM - best bet is to try it yourself - takes less than 5 minutes to try out a ROM - start in the development thread
I've used Flapjaxx, Perfection and am now currently running AOCP - all worked great for me - some pluses and minuses on each one
but i could see using any of these as my daily driver

I can only say what i recommend as my daily driver is fj's stock by att carrier with h0tw1r3's oc kernel r2.. It is awesome fast. I tried aosp, cm9, hybrid, paranoid, but after all that i missed having spen. I don't use the pen much but when i do its at pretty crucial times. Im going to flash cm9 official right now to try it out but most likely won't keep it. So i advise try few roms for yourself.

I have tried several CM9, AOSP, AOKP and Stock based ROMS. All of them have their merits and I give props to all the Devs who worked hard to make them.
But after trying at least one of each, my personal fav is JamieD's Paranoid Android ROM.
Great on battery, very very stable hybrid tablet interface.
Each ROM provides a different experience for everybody that uses it. The only way to find a "best ROM" is to try them all for yourself and see what is best for you. Anything that anybody tells you otherwise is wrong, as it is a matter of opinion.

:good:
but i kid
Solid words, i've personally poked around on FJ's line of stock roms, team perfection's objection, seraphim-mesosphere-remix, and official cm9, until i switched to cm9, i had always been switching back to fj's roms because of s-pen gestures, but i switched to the official cm9 nightlies and have been making due, all it takes is some back-up apps (if you have data to back up, things like titanium backup and mybackup or your preference [merely said those, because i use them]) and mess around, play with your phone, always good to have a full charge before you flash but not imperitive, and always remember when you switch between roms, make sure you wipe with double ply :3
Personally loving fjs latest build but i really liked the hotwires build and cm9 have the nfc tagging for themes... I didn't get to test it out but that stuff is pretty cool. Just my opinion.

I've been running Dagr8s King Kang and I will sing praises about that rom. I can't stand any stock based Rom, although I do wish I could use all the nice spen apps.

Official CM9 nightly has been the most stable for me so far, and it's very fast. The only thing I can complain about is home screen swiping lags a bit, and when long-pressing a home screen icon to move or delete it, if you have a lot of icons on the screen, this lags a LOT. Does not happen with different launchers. So far every launcher I have tried has something I don't like about it. The silkiest smoothest launcher I've used is sslauncher in The Collective's CP1 ROM. That whole ROM is very buttery smooth and I love its different style. I was very tempted to go back to that ROM from CM9, but so far CM9 has proven more reliable for me. This could just be ME though, as I've only been playing around with this for a couple days. A week ago, I was totally clueless about how to root a phone, how to use Odin/download mode/recovery, or even what any of that meant!
I think when we see these guys stress WIPE WIPE WIPE, it really does matter. I've taken the habit of wiping anything and everything I can, multiple times, before trying a new ROM. This has given me best results so far. I just keep my important stuff backed up on my computer, and I reinstall my apps manually. Not really a big deal, since I often find when reinstalling them, there are a bunch I had installed that I don't really want anymore anyway.
So, what is the BEST?
- If you want the stock ICS experience -> you can find 100% stock ROMs floating around for various carriers.
- If you want the stock experience but don't want the bloat -> XDA has delivered on this front too, there are a few variations of stock ICS with bloat removed, and a few simple really helpful things installed but no heavy customization.
- If you want the highest performance and customization -> The Collective - AoCP - CP1, CM9, Paranoid Android
Just compare the download size of the stock ROMs to the download size of the faster ones and you'll see!
I'm still a noob at this, so everything I said could be totally wack.

There is no best ROM for a individual users, its down to personal needs. I suggest you take your time and read the threads and make your own decision. This sort of thread never goes well, so i close it.
