I've been using the nightly builds for sometime and the battery drain issue has gotten better than if you were to use the RC1.
You could Siyah kernel, with its own tweaks to give you better battery life. What I also do, I undervolt all the CPU steps and downclocked CPU to further save battery.

Download the latest nightly and extract the kernel yourself. Not difficult, and this is the same advice given to you by GaboWinter on the RR FAQ thread.

For me CM9 nighly + siyah 3.3.3 do a huge battery drain and overheating....

Sure, you can. Just visit this thread, choose your kernel, download .zip and flash via CWMR
Link above contains CM9 zips.
So what s the difference between cm9 kernel from this last post and the cm9 kernels on the link from the post above?

Reflash whatever ROM your using and that will give you back your og kernel. If you didn't flash a ROM and only flashed a kernel, pull the kernel from a stock ROM and flash using Odin!

I made the mistake to restore a jb stock rom nandroid right before work and I'm stuck with it for many hours. Isn't there a way I can go back to aosp without needing odin? Like some flashable zip?

Flash a ICS CWM package like wanam's build..boot into the OS..enable WIFI NFC GPS..now flash the AOSP rom..your WiFi NFC firmware will be downgraded..
