Hey forum! Verizon note 2- touchwiz roms
I have played around with most of the touchwiz roms available, and the one thing that I actually use is the samsung account to sync my snotes with my note 8.0. VZW roms have the syncing disabled within the account(thanks vzw). I have been running Cleanrom ACE 4.7 for ever, as its the only ROM that has every feature I need (Sammy account, 5 minute setting for syncing exchange email). I did try to upgrade to Clean ACE 5.0, but the native email sync went to 15 minutes. No good, for me. Push tends to keep the phone awake and affects battery. Really, its the flasher in me that just wants to try new stuff, as there is so much good stuff to play with.
-Basically looking for International based roms that work on VZW, with Samsung account syncing capabilities and 5 minute sync in the native email setting.
-If not, the ability to ad the samsung account to a ROM that doesnt have it that works on VZW.
I feel that I am so close to finding the perfect "newer" rom. Every time I flash a new one, it is just missing one ingredient that I need. Its a vzw vs the world thing- and because of work I am stuck on vzw. Great coverage, just affects the fun with the phone!
Anybody know of a rom(besides clean 4.7) that can achieve what I am looking for?- thanks

hi. I have the exact same problem but im on i9100 I want to use custom roms but they don't have samsung account option. some roms even include samsung link app but its useless without being able to add the samsung account. you will receive an error that it cant find the Samsung account. Please somebody must know how to do this. I understand that its because that part of Samsung software is proprietary and therefore any custom rom cant include it but surely i can do it for myself?
Can you push the APK's manually from ROMs that have them? Idk if it doesn't work, most of the time I hear people try to get rid of samsung rather than inject it, lol.

I figured that would be the way about it but what packages. who knows? ... and yes I feel a deep sense of irony in the fact that im actually seeking out Samsung foulness
indeed I think the only reason im interested is because I can't have it
I don't know. Make a nandroid, wipe rom, install rom with Samsung apps, use tb, find all Samsung apps, back up those, wipe system, restore nandroid, and restore tb.
Otherwise just find a rom that has it, download, change it to a zip extension, extract Samsung files, push apk
wow. it was litterally as simple as googling samsungservice.apk
I used one from 4shared as I have a 4shared account. the app updated on first launch and works as expected.

That's excellent. Nice work! Did it ad all the Samsung apps, and sync for snote? I know I actually added aosp mail to satisfy my then needed, mail sync settings thru exchange. My company now went to Google apps, and I moved up to the note3 which vzw didn't disable snote sync. Which is a surprise!

I'll do what I can to help you out.
Best email program - I only have exp with Gmail & TW email. I like them both
Organize programs - AppZorter
sync music - there are a bunch of software that can do it: Kies, Samsung Media something, Media Monkey. Google it & you'll probably get more results than I listed
here is a list for you buddy on what to remove and not to...

to get the apps sorted better i prefer using a different launcher. Launcher pro is the one i use but any of them will put them in alphabetical. Cant believe samsung dont have an option in touchwiz to do that, seems quite a basic omission.
email i just use the stock one but k9 email is also pretty good.
not sure what you mean by the voice commands, you should just tap the home button twice and the voice control screen comes up
Best email: K9 Mail.

point is the standard everyday user shouldnt have to come to xda and download a modded theme just to get the app drawer showing alphabetical. Its a pretty standard request from everyone and a pretty big omission from samsung.

Hello All,
I am having issues with my email.apk, specifically there is no option to sync tasks although Samsung indicates that there should be. Samsung wants me to do a hard reset...I am thinking that I could try a working email.apk. So if someone who has access to an email.apk (stock or not), I would be ever so grateful if they could post it.
I am attempting to extract it from one of the uploaded .img files, but since I am learning the Android environment (coming from WM6) it is taking me a while to figure out how to do things...although I am learning.
I am currently using Da_G overclocked rom and have already soft bricked my phone a couple of times but have backups of everything and am getting the hang of it.
Thanks in advance!

Hey Mad383Max,
So, I still cannot enable syncing of tasks with my corp Exchange server. The mail and calendar work fine. I am slowing trying to learn how to modify apks to hopefully get this to work. Thanks for you help!
Is it an exchange account? I have set up a few for people in our company. If it is, can you list the steps you are using. We have a manager who works for us named Karen walker. That was what caught my eye on your post.
Nevermind i see now where you say it is an exchange account. No synchronize of tasks. Let me check something.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away!
Just a quick question. Have you gone into settings/accounts &sync/(your exchange account name here) and checked to make sure that task is checked? I know it is basic but often overlooked.

I did try this and the funny thing is that I do not even have an option for Sync Tasks...only have Sync Contacts and Sync Calendar. When I called Samsung, they said I should have this option. Samsung me to do a factory reset, which I am trying to avoid, and am not sure would really solve anything for the trouble.
I have another Android phone and use Touchdown. I have no problem syncing tasks on that phone.
Thank you for trying to help!
I recently upgraded from UnNamed GB to SHOstock2 ICS and saw the option to use Samsung Dive. I created a Samsung account from the phone and logged into samsungdive.com but all I get is a message saying "Register your mobile phone now!" "A Samsung Account is required to use the Samsung Dive service." -- I tried going to samsung.com and creating an account with the same credentials there, registered my phone, but still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas and/or has anyone gotten Samsung Dive to work correctly on the SGH-I777?
I did briefly when I flashed one of the international stock ics based roms (forget which). Logged in on my phone, then went to the computer and logged in to get the same message you had.. Logged out on computer and back in, and it worked. the locate feature then didn't work though when I tested.

Samsung dive uses a custom login. Google it to find the login. I'd provide a link but I am not able to right now.

Yes, it should be samsungdive.com/DiveMain.do and that's where I've been logging in.
Might be happening because Shostock removed some of the SamsungDive apks. If you have time, do a backup and try and see if registering/logging in with my ROM (link in sig) fixes it. Dive works for me on my ROM

Results: I performed a wipe, then flashed ShishirROM ICS. After booting up and navigating to Settings -> Accounts to add a Samsung account, it informed me there was an update available for the Samsung app. I downloaded and installed the update, and logged into my Samsung account from the phone. I then logged into the samsungdive.com website from my computer and was successfully able to access Samsung Dive and successfully tested the locate and remote ring functions.
Conclusion: Samsung Dive is broken in SHOstock2 ICS (v1.1 as of this writing) and is functional in ShishirROM ICS.

Reporting this in my thread would have been helpful since I don't use that function I didn't know it was not working. Likely it is due to me not having the Samsung apps apk installed.
It will be taken care of for the next update.

It isn't because of Samsung Apps. I think one of the "safe to delete" apks is actually tied to Samsung Dive. If you have a record of which apks you removed from Shostock, let me know and I'll be able to tell you exactly which one you needed for Samsung Dive.
From this site here: http://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/10/apk-default-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
It looks like dive requires:
IMEITracker.apk, MobileTrackerEngineTwo.apk, wipereceiver.apk

Do you know if the problem is the ROM, the phone or AT&T block this options. With the stock GB Rom never can made the register. Thanks a lot for your help

If you read through the entire thread it should become clear what the issue was. The phone itself can support Samsung Dive, however the stock version provided by AT&T does not include Samsung Dive. Furthermore, in many custom ROMs the packages required to operate Samsung Dive have been removed as "bloat". Essentially, Samsung Dive will work on some custom ROMs but not others. For instance it doesn't work on SHOstock2 ICS, but it does work on ShishirROM ICS.
Bottom line: If you don't see the option to create a Samsung account, or the website interface just plain isn't working for you, the ROM you're running likely doesn't support Samsung Dive.
Just use Android lost. Download android lost from playstore its free. And has lots of functions. Wipe data, lock phone, alram , GPS, take pics from front or back cam. Etc. All that its free.

That's annoying, I just spent a couple of hours trying to get this to work, I wish I had read this first!
On my Galaxy Note (N7000, international) with ICS, it required the following two services for tracking in Dive:
-Samsung account (com.osp.app.signin)
-Sogtware Update (com.wssyncmldm)
It was safe to remove these:
-Samsung Apps
-Samsung Backup
-Samsung Backup Provider
-Samsung Browser SyncAdapter
-Samsung Calendar SyncAdapter
-Samsung Cloud Data Relay
-Samsung Contact SyncAdapter
-Software Update (com.sec.android.fotaclient)

So I want to speed up the process since I do get pretty busy in school. Let's create a list of safe to remove apps/files so I can have builds uploaded quicker and lighter! If I test everyone by myself, it'll take a while to do. So you guys tell me, what can be safely removed? Let's try to remove all the AT&T junk!
Remember, 99% of the stuff removed can be downloaded through the Market. You could also create a separate zip to allow people to install the apps that were removed. Just a thought...

Anything with AT&T on it can and should be removed. Just keep Beats audio in there, all I can tell you
Also, do we have an ETA on AT&T HOX+ CM10? Are there other AOSP-based ROMs in development for the One X+, particularly the AT&T version?
It would probably be easier to grab one of the international hox+ Roms that's been debloated and take a look to see what's missing to determine what can come out or at least use it as a base to know what can be removed....not a base to rom build though just to be clear

I dont know but I'm happy I'm seeing threads like this
Can we look at de-bloated At&t HOX ROMs to get an idea of what's safe to remove? Or at the very least, like someone else mentioned, we should compile a zip to have a safety net of sorts.
Also, I'm no expert but I'm more than willing to help test things and speed up our dev process. I should be getting my HOX+ middle of next week.

I've personally removed: stocks, fm radio, flickr, htc mail, htc mail widget, jetcet print, teeter, htc messenger, watch, play music, play books, polaris office, picasa and locations (ATT or HTC's pay GPS, sucks compared to google to me) from this phone. you can add those to your list of safely removable apps.
Another option for app removal..After all ATT stuff is removed.. some of the ATT HOX XL Rom devs (most rom devs actually) use an aroma script or installer before install which asks the user which apps they want to keep or remove. I never use stocks, fm radio, flickr, htc mail, htc messenger, etc, etc. Those are the first things i would personaly uninstall with titanium backup if there wasnt an aroma script. But there are plenty of people who use those apps everyday and couldnt live without them. With the aroma way you can make everyone happy. Which is hard to do in this business.. Everybody wants something different. Scotts Clean Rom for ATT hox has nice aroma features, might want to use parts of it as a template. Also i'm sure you've made some Rom dev friends over the years.. Hopefully some Sense ones Now would be a great time to hit em up for tips and tricks! They could tell you exactly which HTC apps can , should, and shouldnt be removed. Good luck with the Rom building... You seem very excited about it, thats good for us.
And here is a goody everyone on ATT will like. This is a must have app for me.ATT visual voicemail. Market says its not compatible and wont let you download it.. but it works great. transfer to sd card or download with phone, install from phone using a file explorer. make sure unknown sources is checked in security settings. I'll stick my sim card back in my HOX on monday and download the latest version of ATT VVM, this one says it needs updating, but wont let you. Still works great, no problems at all.

I just got my ATT HOX+ and I'm willing to help in whatever way I can. I personally removed all ATT stuff manually (in /system/app) and used Titanium Backup to get rid of BN Nook app and a few others. I'm admittedly not used to this bloatware as I've had a GNex for quite a while now. However, I wanted LTE speeds and had an upgrade available so here I am.
Currently, my phone is dev unlocked running twrp recovery (in the original dev section here on this forum) and I'm rooted (obviously, lol).
On another note, do you guys think we'll get our own forum? It seems like the ATT HOX+ is different enough to warrant it, at least to me.

I actually like the HTC mail but not so much the htc messenger. Maybe he can make an "ultra lite" Rom version in due time which is basically as naked as the stock Rom can get and allow people to install whatever they like and ALSO have a zip download of all the HTC stuff taken out for people like me that want say something like fm radio, HTC mail, etc type stuff to install if the user wanted to . I've seen many roms built this way and users basically love em!
Since you don't use the htc text messenger, what sms/mms app to u use? I configured and use go sms now and love it! Does everything the htc messenger can't and fully customizable! Love the quick sms pop up too from standby, was missing simple features like this from my iPhone. Not anymore

You choose what apps you want and dont want at the beginning of the install. No need for more than 1 version. No need for an ultra lite version when you can choose your own apps. Its almost like your own little rom kitchen. to take stuff out or add stuff. Add battery percent or a different style battery. Add blue icons or red. Use Android boot animation or ATT. Remove sense and add a different launcher. Many Many different things can be done with aroma. I'm not sure how hard or how easy it is to use in development, but it seems to be the way everyone is going. I think its great.
So I decided the first ROM will be senseless (Not AOSP. It'll have Sense stuff removed) and make it as slim as I possibly can. Want it to be a super light ROM so it can be customized as needed. Should I put Apex or Nova launcher?

We see how well the senseless rom went over. 2 pages and last post in august.
Your response when asked in the donation thread what your plans were.

The plan will be sense first since I can mess with that easier. At the same time, talk with lloir for CM

Reason I said a Senseless ROM will be first is because I'm backing up all the files I removed. After I upload the Senseless, I just have to drop in the Sense files and bam, a Sense ROM is made! lol
EDIT: Also, isn't 2 ROMs better than 1? It will be something quick to slap up and if I modify one file from one ROM, I can just do the same mod to the other. It'll be easier to work with both side-by-side. Don't worry man. I got this!
Looking forward to flashing my first rom on this device. Light is fine, and whichever launcher you find lighter on the battery life.

No 2 is not better than 1 IMO. Aroma with a sensless option is the way to go. 1 rom to maintain.
Am also aware that this isnt going to be instant, you are learning to build roms. Aroma may be an advanced rom dev option, i dont know. I do know though that no one said they were looking forward to a senseless sense based rom in the donation thread. Almost everyone said they wanted a sense rom. :fingers-crossed: But ultimately it is your decision. Do what you gotta do. :highfive:
Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has been able to get their hands on the Optical Reader APK. I would really like to use it, but haven't been able to find anywhere on the internets that someone has uploaded it. While I am competent in basic root, etc. I don't know how to pull this from any roms myself. Would really appreciate any help if someone has the time to upload it as an APK, since I'm not rooted. Thanks!
I have been searching for the program as well all week and I've come to a couple conclusions:
There is one individual from the T-Mobile forums looking to help us less fortunate (Verizon) users with the .APK file, but unfortunately there is a .odex attached and he hasn't gotten into deconstructing that yet.
A lot of users are suggesting downloading a program called 'CamCard' from the Samsung App Store (also removed from our phone but downloadable). While this seems like a nice substitution (which I haven't tried), it seems it's only for the business card aspect, and not the all in one package deal that optical offers.
Update: If you do decide to go with 'CamCard', you would also want to add Photo Reader, but you still lose out on translation. 2 out of 3 features ain't bad.
RUMOR: It seems that someone was able to get a hold of Samsung, and confirmed that Big Red did remove the program. From what some users are saying (from their contact with customer support) is that Verizon merely disabled the program and may push it out in a future update. I've attempted to go through every system file and folder but wasn't able to come up with anything, so most likely it's just gone.
I'll be sure to come back and update this if I read any more information.
Stay away from CamCard. It's a piece of ****. I bought it 3 years ago i think it was and when I requested support they gave none so I disputed the charges with my bank and got refunded, It's probably the worst program I ever used. Funny thing is, I can still use it an update it with no issues.
Some of the answers are above. Using Hyperdrive RLS 4 ROM, which got Optical Reader from the international version. However, when you open it, it tries to update on Samsung Apps, and gives you an error that the device does not support it, and shuts it down. Tried getting it on Samsung Apps, and again gives an error that the device does not support it. CamCard is really for business cards only. Google Goggles does not do as great a job either (at least the formating sucks). Until then, I will practice patience....

Same experience as you, (with the exception that I am running stock rooted) it appears that the file it is trying to download is a database, and it is just over 50 meg.
I've read the suggestions to download CamCard, but for me 1) It just looks shady (IMO) and 2) It looks to only be of use for business cards. So I plan on staying away from CamCard. I have used Google Goggles in the past, and while it works, Samsung's Optical Reader looks awesome, and I'm really itching to play with it. I appreciate the responses, really. Guess until someone has time to put it together, I will just have to patiently wait and continue to use Google Goggles.
Well, I guess as just a minor update:
I was able to find both the APK and ODEX files from somewhere in the depths that is XDA. I attempted to move both files into the system/apps folder and change the permissions to rw-r--r--, but after several restarts and do overs, I'm not having much luck on that front. There was one suggestions (via Hyper thread) that I would have to change the build.prop file device.name, but I would like to avoid making edits to the build.prop if possible.
Any suggestions?

Wonder if you can change the build prop, then get it from Samsung then change it back?

Running Hyperdrive 5.0 (before it was removed in 5.5). It works for a few seconds then, I get a black screen, then "Unfortunately, Optical Reader has stopped." .. Funny thing is it is working fine up until this point (the few seconds). Almost (just almost) feels like there is a service running in the background looking for, and killing this task. Grr Verizon.
(Crappy picture attached, could not screenshot the app)
I've got the apk and odex file pulled from an ATT GS4. Not rooted (and still not ready/willing to root. Eventually, maybe), so can't just drop them in sys/apps. Try to install and it acts like it is installing, then tells me application not installed. While I am capable of properly rooting a phone, I'm still a noob in terms of porting an app. Read somewhere on XDA that it probably needs a signed key for my Verizon GS4. So now I'm reading up on android app development and how to do that. Still learning so it will be a while before I make any progress. Anyone more skilled than I am that would like to take a stab at making a distributable APK that works on my Verizon GS4? You would be my hero. I can upload the files I have if so.

Do NOT use the odex file. It is probably used in phones that aren't verizon and has flags, so when they mismatch on app vs device it'll FC. Let the device build its own ODEX. Likely needs to be a /system app too. Try getting a build.prop from a T-Mobile user and editing a few lines from Verizon like brand, name, device, board, etc to a T-Mobile one. (installing their build.prop might work as well but idk). You could use a ROM like Synergy to block their "phone home" stuff or something.
I'm just spouting ideas here. They may or may not work.

If anyone still wants this, here's the stock NC5 Samsung optical reader apk. I just followed the directions on the main Google code page for baksmali and smali to deodex and run this on custom ROMs. I can attach the deodexed version too if needed.
