I have an HTC One & I'm considering switching to The G2.
My 2 day old phone is having Bluetooth connectivity issues and the dreaded build quality gap on the top near the power button.
Honestly if the G2 was @ the T-Mobile store I would have got it that day.
I love my HTC One but once I saw the G2 I had to have it
So what made you leave the One for the G2?

Only reason I left the One is because of the camera. The G2 is hands down the best camera phone....for Android.
Surge, how would you compare the sound quality & volume on the G2 ear speaker during a call compared to the One?

I hear the stock values aren't as strong as it can be. However there is a mod you can do once you are rooted to increase the speaker volume for both for media and speakerphone purposes.

I switch from htc one for bigger screen. Bigger battery which is alot better. Camera is better. Speaker sound is better on htc one which is the only thing i missed but not that bad on the g2. Ui is really nice and i think alot better than sense 5 n touchwiz.

Ear speaker, is pretty much equal between the 2. The One's headphone quality is slightly better than the G2 IMO.
Made the switch myself because of BT and camera. HTC One is a beast, but I don't miss it at all.

I switched for bigger screen, bigger battery, and better camera. The One's camera is pretty ****, I don't understand why people think it is good because every time I use it, it looks like crap. I've had the G2 for a few hours and the camera is amazing so far but we shall see how that plays out in the long run.
Another thing I noticed about the G2 is that it seems the touch sensitivity is better and more accurate than the One.
1. I'm addicted to having the latest, greatest cell phone.
2. Needed better battery life.
3. Wanted larger screen.
4. I hate hardware buttons (I rarely use my G2's rear buttons).
Camera for larger megapixels. The camera on the htc one wasn't bad, wish they would've increased camera pixels by a little. I also jumped for the screen size. I miss the sound quality of the boomsound. But I do like the fact that calls and text come in a small box.
If you are worried about ui speed, htc wins hands down. But battery life is way better with the G2.
Dont care what anyone say htc it has the fastest ui on current devices.
Made the switch for bigger screen, better battery, didn't like the almost flush wake/power button, and if I had to stay stock the G2 had more built in tweaks.

I don't own an HTC one but have used one before. It's been awhile so I can't really compare the two phones, but I'm wondering what you mean by fast. When you say fast do you mean smooth? Because there is a huge difference. If you mean fast then just enable developer settings and you can change the speed of the animations. Perhaps you mean smooth and on that all I can say is I can't imagine the one being smoother than the near perfection I see on this phone.

^^My reasons plus other things like better gaming (N64 emu is quite smooth), knock-on and headphone jack on bottom were pluses
Also I didn't know if Note 3 Dev was going to be open due to Knox and my S4 was losing value
Thing I regret is that Wifi Tethering isn't available yet on VZN but I suspect that is temporary

When I say fast, when you touch the phone icon the dailer launches immediately when you press it. If you press home it goes right away no lag. When you launch text it comes up right away. Htc put all their effort into out doing any phone in that aspect. It comes from how heavy UI are now days, the one will run circles around S4 and note 2 stock. Go to any store and you can see for yourself or i could do a youtube video

Bigger screen and faster processor
Related
Things I did not like about the GNex:
Crazy batter drain: 25 percent per hour during moderate usage. (maybe due to new battery)
No visual voice mail
Missed a lot of key presses – the screen is just not that sensitive (very annoying having re repress keys!)
Speaker quality is miserable. It’s all scratchy and distorted at higher volumes. And it’s not nearly as loud as the Photon.
It’s is not as responsive as the Photon: Photon seems faster with almost any task.
Screen is low contrast and looks muddy in white areas
Screen is unevenly illuminated
Photon camera is hands down better in terms of detail
Right side of images are soft (something wrong with the lens?)
The case is slippery – and it’s already so large that I do not want to add a case.
Lack of capacitive buttons is a real pain. For example, while the phone is importing contact from Google, you can not simply press the home button and do something else in the foreground. There is no button to press, so you are stuck there waiting needlessly.
Things I like about it:
High resolution screen can look fantastic & type looks extra clear
the screen has rich, awesome blacks
The camera is always focusing and shoot as soon as you press the button
It seems to charge very fast
Radios seem good: Speedtest yielded similar results to the Photon on both 3G and wifi.
--------------
As the GNEx is overall less responsive than the Photon, spkr phone is terrible, and battery life is poor, I am going to sell it and keep to Photon.
So yeah, I will be upgrading my other like to the Evo LTE in June and see how that goes…
And hopefully the next Motorola will keep the physical buttons, as the Evo LTE does.
Best,
ron
I moved on to a gnex. My screen has been responsive except when the browser is loading.
Battery life seems good once you train the battery. Have gotten about 2 hours of calls AND 4 hours (together) of surf time on wifi.
It is slippery sometimes. Back feels like it has traction sometimes. Does need feel as good in hand as photon, but is lighter and more bottom weighted.
For the speed of the device its mixed. Has same stock launcher hiccup as photon...but only with a LWP. Everything else is smooth for the most part.
Speakerphone is decent if you hold it right. Seems more naturally tuned than voice heavy. Not as loud though.
Another important feature for me is awesome blacks. Photon had black crush and made the xda start up page look orange. Back to a more normal contrast scale on the gnex. The photon was still easier to read in sunlight and both have that blue tinted screen which is either the glare reduction or oleo phobic quality. Mind you the 2nd gnex I am on has the purple tint issue.
Radios seem on par and this thevgnex stays connected to my wife's car it seems. Photon does support more profiles though.
NFC....have you seen what you can do with tags??????
One more thing I love about Sammy devices is their haptic feedback.
Things I miss are the alarm features, stopwatch, web top, HDMI support with no adapter, the kickstand, fb integration, and the rounded edges.
Over all though the gnex is still a great phone as is the photon. I kept mine because of it
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
just as a quick fyi, photon doesnt have physical buttons it has capacitive buttons, the gnexus has onscreen buttons
For what its worth..... I went to sprint and played with a gnex....... it was OK but the external speaker wasn't very loud and it wasn't any faster than my photon. For me it isn't enough of a difference for me to upgrade from my photon with cm9. I really do want a phone with nfc chip and a baro sensor tho.

OK - just tried the HTC One X. It is indeed impressive - much more so than the Gnex.
The screen is pretty fantastic, it feels smaller and more sturdy than the Gnex too.
A much better phone IMO.

it would have to be out of this world fantastic for me to even consider it.
i spend my free time riding a dualsport motorcycle at times way farther into the Everglades than i should be and have to turn on GPS for hours at a time. i use a 3500ma battery daily and carry the stocker as a backup. a replaceable battery is a must for me.
to be honest as well i'm tired of having half ass broken phones. unlocked bootloader but no 4g etc. as soon as my area gets LTE i'm getting what ever Nexus phone is available at that time. hopefully it's a motorola made one but if not it's no big deal.

Only thing worse than getting a boner in public places is not having a memory expansion slot on my smartphone as I like to keep my media in excess. So that was the deal breaker for me.
Sent not from your device!
The battery as mediocre with my gnex when I first got it too. After two weeks the battery has improved greatly. When using only stock I prefer the gnex.
If you own the photon skip the gnex, but if its between both and all else is equal then go with the gnex. Price wise, the photon can't be beat though. Wish I still had it, I would have spent my money on a tablet instead!

Ok people. Doing reviews on devices other than the Photon 4g, should be kept in respective device forums. Unless I'm missing something, I didn't see the MP4G mentioned once.
I put a sticky up just for posts like these. "What Phone should I buy"
Also, for "some", try and keep the sexual innuendo's to a minimum... "boner", and don't let it progress farther.

I'm not very picky so here we go:
User Experience has been great. i'm coming from an s3. I like the sleekness of the device. The thin bezels make the s3 seem clunky. Navigating menu's and around the phone has been fantastic. Of course some of this novelty is due to a new toy, but this really is a superb phone imo.
Features I really like the knock knock feature. quickmemo is neat but maybe a novelty.
Battery Battery has been very nice. I have yet to charge my phone and its been 24 hours. Got it at around 77% had it plugged into computers for about 10 minutes trying to get adb to work. It's down to 30% now. Wifi does not drain. I went down 5% in 7 hours.
Build Quality Build quality seems very sturdy. Back plate is a little "Mushy" if you press it. The heft really makes it feel premium. Screen is very nice. No headphones but i have much better headphones than the $22 quadbeats (which aren't bad).
Verizon.
The statusbar toggle in the nav bar might be the best idea I've seen in awhile, knock on is also a nice feature. Only lag I experienced was using swiftkey and going back to home, which other have also noted.
Verizon also

Verizon Variant, I previously owned N4, ONE, DNA, and S3, so my comparisons are based off those.
User Experience
This is absolutely the smoothest, lag free phone I've EVER used. Its ridiculous
Features
The display is beautiful, I like it better than my ONE. Having such thin bezels makes it really pop. Hard to really explain. I love the keyboard, I've always preceded Swiftkey, but do not feel the need to switch on this phone. The mms has customization features above any other phone I've had, and the lay out of everything from dialer to settings is absolutely stunning.
Only complaint-The ONE with Boomsound spoiled me. I miss the quality of the external speakers, Verizon removed one of the dual speakers on there G2 to fit in the wireless charging and you can tell. Its not bad, just not amazing like everything else on this phone. Back to Bluetooth speaker for my podcasts. But really no,big deal. The camera is the best I've ever used. Better than ONE and my wife's S4. Picture quality and interface.
Battery
I've had this a full day. I charged it fully overnight and have been using it regularly, browsing internet, since 630 am so that's 7 hours of usage and I'm on 71%. Exact same usage on my ONE and phone would be dead an hour ago and plugged in. Battery is EXCELLENT.
BUILD QUALITY
I am not a,fan of Samsung at all because I hate the feel of there phones. Feel cheap. I was concerned about the G2 feeling the same because it's plastic as well. It doesn't. Maybe it's because of the way they stepped there battery but it feels extremely solid. The weight to it makes it feel really good in your hand, and there is no" hollow" feel to it. The plastic back feels nice and looks beautiful. I wish Verizon hadn't changed the back buttons though, but that's super minor.
As you can tell, I've drunk the cool aid and am going back for seconds. This phone is the best I've ever owned. P E R I O D

My review of the LG G2 running CM11 Android 4.4.4
Wanted to make this little review here on xda and have others guy with cm11 share. Before I start I am running almost the latest nightly on the D801.
Hardware: Obviously CM can't change the hardware but all the awesomeness about the G2 like the compact design and decent camera, only decent because of the slow focus and poor performance inside buildings and houses but if you're outside the phone will take amazing pics. Speakers have good quality compared to nexus 5 with same volume but if you're a headphone user like me you won't really care much.
CynagonMod Itself: Goodbye LG UI was the first thing I said when I loaded up my phone with cm11 I was happy to let go of the kinda ugly UI which was a bit slow sometimes but was actually much faster compared to touchwiz either way cm brought stutter and lag free performance which should be the standard, because when iPhone users use android its probably a galaxy with touchwiz and its slow, so they think android is slow. Make more phones like the nexus 5 Google but please fix its flaws! So cm11 on the g2 is fast, I'm able to play games also much more smoothly without any lag, on the LG UI I had to turn on force 4x for simple games like tr2 to run well. I'm also very happy with the theme I have going its called slim .. And it ain't 99 cents its a bit more its my favorite theme right now next to flux.
The few bass of cm11 on g2 (very little): there is not much to dislike about cm11 nightlies to have a few bugs here and there I have so far only found 2 that have to do with the screen and camera.. Let's start with the screen not often but happens sometimes the screen will display white and black lines through the middle of the screen for less than a second this isn't really that annoying since it rarely happens maybe once a week, sometimes twice a day etc right now I tweaked the dev options to force GPU to maybe help it not occur but its totally livable through .. Next up a actual annoyance and its the camera the cm camera just straight up can't take photos inside and in low light its faster than the lg camera which I had but I think the fact it does not give time to take the shot is the reason they are so crappy next is the flash I rarely use the flash but when I do it is like taking a picture with a nexus 5 the flash never remains on to wait for a good lighting its creating it just flashes once and is done taking the shot this will resault in real crappy shots. But outside pictures look how they would normally and that's where photos really matter .
So yeah I would love to make YouTube videos and review phones but I don't have the equipment yet and I'm brainstorming channel names I want Cyan in the name .. I don't wonna use chlcken lmfao.
I am coming from a Galaxy Note 2 and there are definitely both pros and cons about the G2 compared to the SGN2.
Display:I love amoled's blacks .I thought the display of the G2 would be a lot worse than note 2's and the blacks would be too gray, but i was pleasantly surprised with it.It's still not as black as amoled but its fine, not too grayish.About the size-just 0.3 inches difference but in real life its huge difference. Its like i've cut note2's display about 30% .
User experience:it's ok.Its overall fluid and smooth with a little bit of stutter here and there.Touchwiz has been as smooth for me as is G2's UI,but the stylus was incredible ,i loved it and i miss it still.Otherwise G2's UI is satisfactory. As of AOSP roms,i'll get to that in a while.
Battery:When i first got the G2 it made 6 hours of SoT,now it generally makes about 5.At first i thought battery life would be even better with the G2 than the note 2 but eventually my experience got the same.I've had top of about 8 hours of SOT with note 2,i had about 7.40 with the G2,with both phones normal usage gives me 5 hours SOT.
Build quality:The first touch to the G2 was quite good.I was expecting a little less of the build quality, but it appeared better than i thought.I've had the phone for about a month now and I am having controversial experience with the back buttons. At times they seem quite nice but more often side buttons are more comfortable for me.Too good there is the Knock on feature,it it wasn't present in the G2 I am not sure i could get used to the back buttons. On the other hand back buttons make a little hole on the back which makes the phone very comfortable to hold in the hand.
A few extra words: Development for the G2 seems ok generally, not as huge as samsung's phones but still satisfactory.BUT it is really sh*tty imo that each kernel is only compatible with each rom and needs a special version for different roms. All the phones i had before the G2 just had one or two types of kernels. With nexus phones any kernel works with any rom,and with htc and samsung phones any stock kernel works with any stock rom and any aosp kernel works with any aosp rom.G2 disappointed me with that.
Overall i am satisfied with the G2 and like it a lot.I can get used to it despite its negative sides and i enjoy the positives a lot.
What I like on my LG G2:
+ Big display with nice colors
+ Really good camera
+ System with lot of usefull features and customization
+ FullHD 5,2" display, Snapdragon 800 + 2GB RAM and 13MP camera with OIS for great price
+ Great battery life
- Build quality is pretty bad, everything creak. Shiny back cover is terrible.
- Cannot unlock bootloader
- Serious issues in system (lag while updating weather widget info, no support for ART, home screen button delay, launcher redraws, old menu button)
- No support for 4K or 120FPS 720p video recording on stock but hardware and chipset supports it
- Strange update distribution, France is on 20B, almost every country except Italy is on 20D and Italy on 20F. Why not same update for every Europe country?!

Build quality well it needed to be light, The creak could be fixed with putting something between maybe idk or buy a hardcase or gelcase then you fixed the creak and the shiny back cover problem.
Yes bootloader 4.4.2 isnt yet unlocked by someone but see this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2715496
Lagg maybe because thermal throttling isoff idk or it is on 4.4.2
No support is also i think to maybe save space cause more frames means more space and if you have like 16gb then the storage will go fast full. And i thought that a human cant see more then 60fps so its unnecesary right?
And about the update distribution well its weird a bit but you also got the same with Samsung devices.

I've dropped the phone a couple of times, luckily i had a case. Though it didn't help with a pressure crack the screen developed while phone was in my pocket when I got in the car. Had to shell out $200 for replacement just a few months after getting the phone.
Just curious to hear what everyone else thinks is missing from making the g2 the perfect smartphone....
My ONLY two complaints are I wish the NAV buttons would have an option to Auto hide so we would have the full screen to use... Also wish it could have been slightly thinner....
Other than those its the best phone I've ever used!!

The Glossy plastic is a turn off. Would be perfect if had an aluminum unibody like the HTC One since the battery is embedded. Also a micro SD card wouldn't hurt as well.

Removable SD and a better external speaker would be great improvements.
(better marketing, but I'm not worried about that)

No not at all. But the iphones is better. 120 fps, much better lowlight shots and I'm a fan of a minimalist interface on a camera. Most of the time when i take a photo its a spur of the moment thing. Point and click.

I miss the wireless charging, my version doesn't support that like my previous G Pro and the 2 wireless chargers are now useless.
If they had developed Qslide to be compatible with any app, it would have been an amazing device.
My mother and sister have the iphone 5 and iphone 5s, and both were amazed at the quality of the G2 pictures. Make sure you set it to maximum quality. HDR is also amazing on the G2. But overall, the auto intelligent mode is my favorite, as it seems to be able to focus at varying distances, something the iphone has trouble doing.

How about not having that strange looking dot matrix on the screen when you look at it in direct sunlight. Definitely cheapings the look of the phone

I love the phone in general (VS980), but the smallest and most annoying feature is the inability to change the 'menu' soft key to a standard 'recent apps' button. I didn't realize how much I would miss the easy access to it. Long pressing the home key just doesn't do it for me.
It's a good device, but not even close to being perfect. The hardware part of the phone is the best in the business.. besides the resolution on the rear camera. The software however.. is another thing. Don't get me wrong, it functions, but it has no style.. or lack of a permanent style. If someone used an Xperia device in the past you would have known what I am talking about. And there are some core apps that are missing functionality - primarily the music player - just look at the options and the connections Walkman app has.
So yes in my opinion LG needs an European design team, I mean just look at the Asian music atmosphere and you will see how unsophisticated or different it is from the European or the American style. Maybe they need a calm, all-lines-design Japanese guy to help them out.. wink wink Sony and LG working together against Samsung and Apple is something I would love to see.
Pre rooted.
Open back for battery and SD Card or just SD card slot.
Autohide Navbar or (hardware button)
Camera (software update) so better at photos for low light.
Split screen and no Qslide (Side bar to open up like S4)
Qmemo to autoamate contact list add.
My only thing against this phone is the camera. You really have to hold the phone still in order for it to focus, or you will get the "heartbeat" effect. The low light shots could also use a little work .. Also...I found that certain apps somehow trigger the lg iq agent which drains the battery very fast..I have disabled it many times but it always gets triggered after certain apps are installed..besides the things I mentioned the phone Is close or near perfect.

My only gripes about this phone is the lack of an SD card slot, the rear of the phone being glossy as Hell, and the camera. Geez, this camera issue... While it does take AMAZING pics, the frame rate in low light (which is what they touted the phone as being GREAT for low light shots) Is absolutely ABYSMAL. I can take a good picture in perfect well lit conditions, but in a room lit with florescent lightning, unless I'm absolutely still, it takes a few second to focus, then the shutter takes too long to close. By then, the shot is lost.
Other than that, I love the software. I've kept this phone on a stock Rom pretty much since I've had the phone. It's the longest I've kept a phone on the stock Rom. Lol.
If they would've given us the soft touch matte back like the N5, it would've been PERFECT. This thing is a fingerprint MAGNET. Also another thing worth noting... not all cases fit the verizon version. The back buttons are smaller and the camera housing ring thing is different from the other versions. But for a plastic phone, it's def better than any Samsung I've had. Real compact and solid feeling.
Overall, a solid device, the best I've had.

In getting great low light shots. Never done video but it beat the iphone 5s, an s3 mini, and an iphone 5c when taken in the same spot

There is not much i can say about this device so far coming from a nexus 4. This is however my first day so i dont want to draw a conclsuin just yet. Overall i am very, very happy to see that despite this phone havibg a larger screen it is about as big as a nexus 4. This is sinply amazibg because i find note2 and 3 too big for a phone. The battery life so far has been okay i read on here that it takes about 4 to 5 days for things to settle in.
Otherwise just like others i would say the only thing that bothers me is the phone's glossy back.
I thought i will be rooting this device soon but honestly it does a great job and i see no reason to do so at the moment, maybe when i get bored.
I dont refret the upgradr and i will cross my fingers and hope for the best. One last thing to mention on my part is that this phone has got the best camera i have ever had on a phone to date and as a person that doesnt base his decision off aphone's camera.. This thing is gorgeous.

For me :
HTC one speakers (these have to be the best on a smart phone?)
N5 back (soft touch)
SD card slot would be really nice
Super fast focus like HTC one
Quick settings panel like CM or PA rather than a horizontal scrolling settings

If so, do you miss it? Can you get used to not having different led notifications? Was it really an upgrade? What about the htc on m8 camera, does it take better pics/lowlight? Battery life, seems htc's battery is smaller? I mean the LG G2 was ok as a daily driver.
I gave my G2 to my wife and bought the M8 for myself. I figured that if I decided within 2 weeks that I didn't like the M8, I could always get it back close to stock and return it (and get another G2 - or something else - for myself.)
To answer your questions:
No, I don't miss it completely - but I do miss some things: smaller size and "knock off" (M8 has knock on)
I haven't really noticed the difference in LED notifications, but I'm sure that it's something that can be worked around with a firmware and/or kernel mod.
I didn't consider it an upgrade.
For ME, the camera on the phone was only really ever a utility thing. I can still take pictures of stuff for reference (such as serial number labels, etc.)
Battery: The G2 battery is better than the M8 battery. There's no question about it. However, the M8 battery is still quite a bit better than a nexus5 battery.
Of course, that leaves the question of what is better about the M8: Better construction, MUCH louder built in speakers, HTC isn't trying to lock down the bootloader, sdcard (big deal for me and my 50GB of music), ability to easily convert to GPE.
I find myself constantly looking for the back buttons on my M8. I miss the knock features, the HTC Is way too sensitive, I turned it off. Camera, LG G2, blows it away. I used it on my trip to Disney and the pics looked awesome, maybe got lucky? Pure performance, HTC. And the ability to go back and forth between ROM's, RUU's and trick the phone was the main reason I sold the LG G2 and picked up the M8, missed my M7's so much I had to go back. Now, with all that said, I may seriously consider the G3, but I doubt I will sell the M8. Different phones for different occasions.

I miss the ability to block calls. I could block all calls from a certain area code, block all unavailable caller id's, etc. Can't find this functionality on htc one m8.

I had a g2. It was great but the stock os is as ugly as touchwiz so I don't miss that at all. Knock on was cool but using the volume keys to turn the screen on is just as good imo. The g2 had a serious video bug. As in if you were taking video there was a bad waving effect that no one could fix. If the g3s os looks decent and can be rooted I'll go back to LG. If it looks like poo I will stick with the amazing m8. Nothing can touch the speakers which I use a lot when I'm listening to music at work.

I'm currently using the HTC m8 and I'm tired of it. I haven't had a g3 in years. How does everyone like theirs? I was going to pre-order but the screen heat issue scared me off since I work outdoors. Please list your pros and cons. Thanks

I came from a SGS3 and I'm satisfied with the G3, overall. I hate the sharpening that occurs on text which is scaled down and I hate the stock pastel UI colors. I find the screen resolution does little to actually enhance the user experience. Lastly, I hate that the audio amp doesn't play nicely with low impedance speakers (you'll hear static in the left audio channel unless there's a ~ 64 ohm or higher load or the speakers are below 64 ohms and not very sensitive). The flipside is that audio output is excellent when using quality headphones or audio gear (not Beats trash, I'm talking about real audiophile-grade stuff).
Everything else about the phone is great, especially if you have large hands!
The display looks pretty good in the store, but I do have a tab s that I use for YouTube or anything media. I compared the phone size to my m8 and they are the same size. Does it have a car mode? I drive 2hrs a day to work and hate the car mode on this m8

I hate the screen on my m8. I can't see it at all with my polarized shades on. Drives me nuts. The power button and volume button placement drives me crazy too. Only had the phone for a month good thing I got it with the edge plan. Any lag with the g3? I looked at the s5 too but kinda worried about the touch wiz lag factor lol

You are going to have a hard time with any screen and polarized sunglasses. The lag is very subjective. I do not notice lag except for a bit right after boot up. Also if you are like me and like sense you use G3 Tweaksbox along with enabling the hidden menu to allow themes for the launcher to get the look of sense.

My note 3 screen was dim with shades on but the htc is completely black. Has anyone had the heat issues?
I came to my G3 from a Droid 3 so it was quite an upgrade and I couldn't be happier. I pretty much did everything hacking related that could be done to my Droid 3 and finally just got tired of how slow it was. It would take 1 full minute just to load facebook. The G3 is pretty amazing. All we need now is an unlocked bootloader. <crossing fingers>
We needed the unlocked boot loader with the Droid3 too. Motorola promised us, like LG has, but never unlocked it.
I still have a few of those Droid3s around somewhere. I used to use them when traveling in Europe since they did well there on cheap local sims once unlocked for international use by Verizon. When Hashcode developed SafeStrap, things got pretty nice though, as long as you didn't need the camera. I think I stopped at Jellybean.
The Verizon G3, like all recent Verizon LTE phones, works on about any GSM carrier by just inserting an active SIM chip and setting up the APN and mode.
I am on T-Mobile 4gLTE right now on mine. Gets amazing download data speeds.
I agree with you about the Droid 3 and safestrap. Safestrap made it so easy to backup and restore my ROM but the camera bug was very frustrating. I finally ended up just using Minimoto which was a stripped down stock ROM with the holo launcher. It worked well, had all of the garbage bloatware removed, and the camera still worked.

Had the M8 for a couple of months back when it first came out. Great phone but I don't miss it one bit. I usually root my phone's within a couple of days but not with this one. Perfectly happy the way it is. I haven't noticed any lag on my G3 and battery life is improving compared to when I first got it. Definite plus is the replaceable battery.

No car mode
Pros: great standby on battery, speaker is decent for a rear facing one, design feels good in hand, camera is great, cell signal reception is great
Cons: screen is next to impossible to see outdoors in sunlight unless you really crank the brightness, little but noticeable lag/stutter especially in app drawer nothing major, screen on time is OK but definitely not best, and for some reason this phone is super picky about charger and cable combo (have used the same high quality chargers for all my phones mostly but the g3 slow charges or sometimes simply goes into not charging mode, works fine with stock cable though)

The same here!
How much do you value root (and possible bootloader unlock)? Or else you might want to wait for Moto X+1 and/or Note 4.
Personally I am overall satisfied with my purchase but its not without its flaws (like any other phone).
It's a nice phone, but I am not sure I would say it's much better than an m8. These phones are so comparable anymore, it's hard to justify the monies for them IMO. I used to switch constantly, had jump with tmobile and every 6 months switched out. Now, on contract with Verizon and keeping this for a good while.
I do have the heating issue, only when taking a bunch of pictures and or videos. Automatically dims my screen to cool it off. It was ridiculously hot!
Besides that it's a nice phone.

I had the heating issue once when I was recording a video in UHD (which is limited to 5 minutes because of extreme heating). Other than that the phone will get warm but nothing out of the ordinary.
