[Q] Galaxy S3 EFS Error cause and fix - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apologies for this being my first post, but I need some of your opinions/advice...
I fix phones for friends and friends of friends, and changed the glass on a Galaxy S3. It worked fine, turned on and that was that. Gave it back to the owner.
Later that day I get a call saying it won't turn on, and cycles the network logo and Samsung logo. Sure enough it does.
When in recovery mode I get this error:
'E:failed to mount /efs (Invalid argument)'
It won't wipe data/factory reset giving the same error as a reason.
1). Is this any way related to the glass change?! Or is it a software only problem?
2). Would any one be so kind as to point me in the direction of a fix?
Thanks in advance

Thanks, I would like to know whether it is a result of something I've done to the device? Any thoughts?

Ok, thanks.

I wouldn't have thought replacing the glass would cause the boot loop, if it booted normally afterward. Did the phone get a firmware update of any kind afterward?
It would be worth flashing an EMG4 stock rom via a pc to see if that enables the efs folder to be read again, factory reset in recovery first.
If you have a backup of the efs folder then you could format the partition and restore the backup -don't do this unless you have a valid backup.

I wouldn't have thought the glass would have caused a boot loop. That's all I've done to it - change the glass and turn it on to test. Gave it back working. Nothing has been done by me to the software.
I'll try what you suggest, thanks. I doubt there is an efs backup, I don't have one.

[Q] Could someone help with this strange birck issue?

Hi guys,
I have an international galaxy s3 (GT-I9300), it's about one month old. And here is my problem, I can't turn it on, it get's stuck on the main logo, where it says 'Samsung galaxy SIII GT-I9300', no animation afterwards. I can access recovery and download mode too.
So, what did I have? I had the latest firmware (I9300XXELLA_I9300VFGELL3_CNX) (android 4.2 on romanian vodafone carrier), I had root access, Siyah kernel v1.8.9, flashed the bestMultiTaskingFix 7. I deleted everyone root app mentioned on the siyah kernel page, only had the Swapper 2.
What might have happened? I tried to use the swapper, with setting a swap partition (/dev/block/mmcblk1p2). For a while, not more than an hour, my phone worked, after that a sudden freeze and nothing happened. I rebooted it but nothing happend (paragraph 1). If I enter the recovery mode, it says it cannot mount the EFS partition.
I tried restoring the stock firmware, siyah kernel, stock kernel, other rom, CWM recovery, reflash stock firmware with .PIT file, in Odin: Phone EFS clear, full NAND restore, but nothing worked...
I don't have a backup of the EFS partition, nor a USB JIG, JTAG or any other magical devices, only a lap-top and a USB cable.
P.S: I sent it in to the carrier service center, but unfortunately the flash counter showed 9, which I couldn't reset because the phone won't turn on. So, they told I can say goodbye to my warranty forever and I should also pay 150 euros.
Any idea how I could fix it by myself? Or should I take it to someone who has some kind of magical device (as mentioned above) to repair it?
you cleared your EFS from Odin? why in the world would you do that? nothing you can do without a backup
Yeah, I did clear the EFS partition in my desperate attemp to bring my phone back to life. But not even this worked. As far as I know, it should have at least boot up even with broken/ no efs. But, that's my luck.
So, any suggestions?
No backup from EFS means a trip to the service center.
No way to restore it yourself.

Yup, I know, I've sent my phone to the carrier's service center, but they want way too much money. Some guy can fix it for me for much less money. Anyway, I've read somewhere that if I have a working EFS partiton, Kies can repair it somehow... sooo, what if i restore someone else's EFS partition data?

[Q] Samsung GT-I9300 BRICKED for no reason :(

I was running CyanogenMod 10.1 ROM with SiyahKernel v-1.9.1. My phone ran out of battery, so I went to charge it, I turned it on and it became stuck at the ''SAMSUNG S3 GT-I9300'' logo. I left it there for 30 min. nothing happened, I took the battery out and the same thing. So I decided to flash again the Stock Firmware with ODIN (obiously ), It flashed it with no problems, but it is the same. I tried so many things and searched in so many posts and nothing helped me. Sorry for writing long and for bothering! Thx!
Plenty of reasons why your phone won't boot, running the battery until shut down increases the risk of corrupting files or even partition. If the stock rom flashed via odin successfully then there should be nothing wrong, you did factory reset and clear caches before you booted, right?
factory reset from recovery

Yeah I did it nothing happened... But when I put it into Recovery its says E:failed to mount /efs (Invalid argument) it has something to do with it?
yes. restore your backed up EFS folder.
Or if you didn't back it up, then send it to service. Use search for loads of similar posts.

S3 Soft bricked. Am i wasting my time?

UPDATE EDIT: I have had some progress since my original post. Could you please read my latest posts, maybe you could help me out
Samsung S3 GT-I9300 purchased in the UK.
Its my sisters mobile and i think its soft bricked. She told me it just happened and she done nothing. I received the phone in stock condition.
The phone was orignally stuck solid on the first startup title screen and would not go any further. This is what i have done so far:
1. booted the phone into recovery mode which shows E:failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)
2. wiped cache partition
3. wiped data/factory reset
4. Installed Odin3-v3.04 and downloaded I9300XXDLIB_I9300OXFDLI1_I9300XXDLIB_HOME.tar
5. Connected phone to Odin and flashed the above .tar file which completed sucessfully.
The phone rebooted and it still got stuck on the first startup title screen.
I then looked for a different version and downloaded I9300XXEMF1_I9300EVREMF1_I9300BVEMF1_HOME.tar
this version also installed sucessfully onto the phone after repeating what i had previously done.
The phone reboots and now gets past the first title screen to the animated samsung logo but then keeps looping the animation.
The blue led in top left corner is on and is pulsing from dim to bright constantly while it loops.
Getting a little progress with the 2nd version i kept this on and patched CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.tar ontop of it.
Still the same looping when it gets to animated samsung logo
I dont know if this would of helped but i then tryed downloading the NV Generator to make a new IMEI file but cant get
the phone to respond to NV reader writer program.
Iv downloaded Adb and tryed to push the IMEI file onto the phone but it fails with error E: Signature Verification Failed
Im a beginner and this is the first time iv tryed to fix a phone and iv hit a brick wall and not sure now if im wasting my time.
can anyone help me get to the next stage?
Restore your backed up EFS would be the first step .
Do you actually have an I9300 as the NV tool is for a different phone
jje
Does your phone have a cwm or twrp now that u cf rooted it? If u do..then just flash a new rom over it after a clean wipe..(not stock) hopefully your phne should reboot to the new rom..otherwise ill think of another way..put the files into the extmem card using a card reader..or take a tar file of the new rom and flash it after clean wipe..works for me everytime i f up

is cwm and twrp options in the recovery menu? where do I look to see?
the recovery menu only shows:
Android system recovery <3e>
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
sorry if this is not what you meant. im not sure what cwm and twrp is short for.

Ahh yes I get you now. sorry lol.
what if I get a backup /efs from another phone. would I be able to mount it via sd card, then edit the efs to suit my phone so its not a clone of the phone iv got it from?
iv just flashed ODIN_CheckROM_V4_XXBLG8
it gives alot more options to fiddle around with. I think I could fix this phone to be honest if I keep looking into it.
OMG!! after installing the rom I just posted the phone has booted up and im in
I don't know what to do now.
is the efs fixed? should I make a backup?
how did this fix the phone?

Ok sorry I didn't know, I just thought it was just a missing folder that could be copyed.
the phone has now booted up
[Resurrection Edition] CheckROM EvoHD™ V4 [ODIN ROM]
this is what I flashed and it seems to have fixed it?
can anyone explain what has happened, I would like to understand what this rom was able to do that the others I flashed before couldn't.
if it booted it doesn't mean that EFS is okay

do you know what I could do from here to fix the efs?
should I try and pull anything from the phone onto my computer now that its booted?
when I goto status it says IMEI unknown
I know my imei number is behind the battery, how do I register it?
the fact that it booted changes nothing.
you can't repair the EFS if you don't have a backup
what is EFS? is it a folder? a file?
can anyone else explain a little more?
it is a folder.
to explain a little more - you need a new motherboard because every EFS folder is device-specific
I cant get the phone to connect to my wifi. Kies is not picking up the phone either.
is there a way I can download apps to my pc and load them onto the phone? I would like to try and get root explorer installed to see if there is an efs folder.
i tried EFS PRO. it has generated an efs.img file, is it useful?
this is what i done to get it, im not sure if its correct. can anyone tell me?
i went into Backup and selected Device Filter: International Variants
i ticked the block device box and clicked the backup button.
the operation was successful and it created the zip file with the efs.img inside it.
i have pulled this zip from the phone using QtADB_0.8.1_
does anybody know if this file can be used to fix the problem? or has it made a backup of a corrupt efs folder?

G900TUVU1DOB1_G900TTMB1DOB1_TMB - Download

Here are 2 ways to download the new Lolipop 5.0 firmware from T-Mobile. This file was downloaded from Sammobile and is in .tar file format. I am just hosting the file as a torrent on my PC which is on 24/7 and I have Fios 75/75 internet so should download fast and also added a link to the Mega mirror link I made. Enjoy and hope I help people download faster.
G900TUVU1DOB1_G900TTMB1DOB1_TMB - Feb. 18th 2015 - Andriod 5.0 - 1.44gb
Mirror 1 - Torrent
Mirror 2 - Mega
Please be aware this is a stock .tar file and you phone should be on stock recovery. I took my rooted 4.4.2 and backed it up via Kies and then did a factory reset/initialization to factory which will give you the new lolipop software. This file was posted as a backup mirror to the Sammobile.com site as they are on slow servers.

And here I was looking for this in a different forum, silly me. Thanks!
I used the 2'nd mirror, and used Odin to flash it. now my phone is stuck on "recovery booting" [on top of the screen] on Samsung logo. I can't get in download (via power down + volumedown) or recovery (power up + volumeup)
essentially i might have bricked my phone, with no way of recovering it :crying:
-any thoughts on how to fix this?

You also need to use the home key with either of those other key combinations. All three at the same time.

Take the battery out, then boot with volume down+home+power and you will get to download mode. From there you can do it again. Don't unplug until you see the white T-Mobile boot screen!

Also you may have to factory reset after flashing the full tar with Odin. So if you go into a bootloop after Odin reports "success", pull the battery, replace battery, volume up+home+power should get you into stock recovery, from there factory reset and wipe cache partitions. You will lose data, but sometimes that's how the cookie crumbles.
hahaha i know how to get in boot-loader etc, just didn't typed in the comment. i have another issue, i have managed to flash D0B1 (lollipop) but the problem is get constant issue of rebooting, "e:failed to mount /efs (invalid argument)".
and it show up as "factor mode on" as toaster when i 1st turn it on! flashed it couple times with odin, thoughts?
Thanks for the file man.

how long does it take to install? I've been on odin now for about 10 minutes on System...
Any Odin-flashable tars of just the bootloader and modem?
I'm still getting "E: failed to mount/efs (invalid argument)" i did the flash with "NAND Erase all" and "phone EFS Clear" (mod warning - don't do this!)

Pit file isn't going to restore your efs. efs is specific for each device(i think).. I think you now have a glorified brick. Maybe, just maybe, you will be able to restore it if taken to a repair company. However, if you were getting efs issues before checking wipe efs, it may still be there and just an issue of accessing it (ie permissions or incomplete flash)
Pit files are partition size/location information, hence P-artition I-nformation T-able. Has nothing to do with restoring your efs directory.
You should still be able to reboot to android though. You just won't get signal or anything. I honestly think you are bricked though if your efs is truly wiped without a backup saved. Maybe Samsung can repair it.
~A little caveat supporting Samsung's decision to go through with Knox: This is the exact reason why they implemented it. People were returning phones with similar issues saying "it just stopped working" as a warranty replacement. While I'm not pointing fingers as anyone here saying it is their fault, I just remember people complaining about Knox not being fair and such and saw how this issue was a perfect example as to why they went through with it.

EFS for Samsung s776c

Hi all,
Please help me, my device is Samsung s766c displays an error after turn on, displays pop up message "system process not responding" with two buttons wait & close, then device reboot, so I cannot access to it.
I did wip data and wip cache from recovery mode but the same error appear, I notice in recovery mode displays "failed to mount EFS" I think the problem from it, I did more searching for EFS for this model but I do not found it.
Please anyone have this model make backup for the EFS and send it for me.

you cannot use some one elses efs it contains your data that make ure phone ures. imei and other
so im assuming youve rooted it and either deleted stuff or flashed a custom rom
always first try to use odin and dl mode and flash stock firmware
some efs issue span from flashing roms or roms with wrong modems and base bands
and sometimes can be fixxed simply by going back stock

If you didn't make the proper backup then you will have to send it to the oem.

If flashing the pure stock rom doesn't fix it and you have no back up then you have 2 options.
1. Send it in to the oem (will most likely NOT be free)
2. Blow it up
