Hello to everyone from a new forum member
I recently bought the Z Ultra as a replacement for my Galaxy Note II, and was expecting to have to still keep my iPhone 4S in the other pocket as a decent camera.
I noticed that the Z Ultra does take quite nice photos, and indoors they are often better than the iPhone! But I was shocked on zooming in to find that they have no detail at all, and that was explained by the fact all the photos are around 1MB in size (on the highest resolution setting)!! iPhone photos average 4MB, and Note II photos average 7MB.
I asked Sony support how to reduce the ridiculous level of JPEG compression on the photos, but they said it cannot be done. Is this really true? It's shocking if so! What's the point in even having a high resolution sensor if you compress the images so much it might as well be 2megapixel!?
Is there any replacement camera app that can take photographs with sensible compression levels, or would it require hacking the OS? I'd prefer not to root if possible. Can anyone help please? I love this Sony and it would be great for it to be my only phone.
Garry
I noticed this myself yesterday. I took some test photos and thought they looked nice, but then I zoomed in, and holy artifacts batman, that was quite bad. Try using a third party camera app from the play store.

I also encounter the same problem. If anyone has any solution, please let me know.

The Z1 camera app is available for the Ultra in the Themes and apps section. Try that out, or install a third party photo app from the Play Store and see if that helps. I haven't installed anything yet since i'm not that interested in taking photos, so i can't tell if it helps or not.
Thx, I will try

Didn't try Z1 cam app yet, but I tried third party apps and the results are the same, even worse in low luminosity conditions (as third apps do not use the hdr backlight correction). I took a look on the media_profile.xml and changed value of ImageEncoding quality to 100/90/80/70/60/50 instead of 90/80/70/60/50/40 but didn't see any improvement. I guess it is ruled by one of the camera files, and I don't know how to find which and even less how to modify it.

The camera is a little better in 4.3. Still not great, but better.

I'm not sure, but I think it's a direct port of the Z1 257 camera app, and the Z1 also got updated to 4.3 with an improved camera, so my guess would be that the 4.3 for the Ultra is also "better" than the 257 port. I can't see how Krab could've modified it to be better.
I have no proof to back up my claims that the 4.3 camera is in fact better, but my first reaction when I took some low light pics the other day was that it didn't look as bad as expected. It may be a little better or I'm simply delusional

OP, Im using Camera 360, it comes with a "Keep Original Photo" setting. Maybe you like to try that. But I have to warn you, I switched it off because it's a pain to keep managing 2 photos for EVERY shot....
Sent from my C6833 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
it looks the same...... are there other ways or apps to reduce the compression?
360 creates two files and for sure they dont look the same when i tested.
Also, try ProCapture and A Better Camera. Both had better low light result details than the stock one. ProCapture for example, has a reduced noise setting which works decently too.

I am wondering which app do you guys use to take screenshots? I used Screenshot for a bit but the fact that the program name is 'screenshot' on my phone pisses me off a bit, haha (unless, is there a way to rename apps on your app drawer? Same with sdrescan, ha, wish I could rename that), but I heard about ShootMe and I was wondering if people though the quality of pictures were different between the two, or if there is a preference.
Not sure if this could go under Themes & Apps or Q&A (since this is a question about an app, although maybe someone knows how to rename apps, ha). If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize and I will move it to the correct one.
Some launchers will let you rename apps in the drawer and homescreen and/or just create shortcuts with the name you want. I'm sure there's an app on the market that will let you do something similar shortcut-wise.
As for screenshots, the two most popular for as long as I can remember are drocap2 and Shootme. Used Shootme initially then went to drocap for a while. Currently trying Shootme again since they added the screencast feature for low fps videos.
I use shoot me...the quality is great and the app is simple to use

+1 on shoot me.
I use to use drocap2 on my Droid X and the quality was great and shoot me didn't have good quality. I used drocap2 several times with no problems in the first few weeks but now the quality is horrible, I'm not sure if its my Rom or an update to the app causing it but now shoot me works really well on my phone. It seems all the apps have their strengths and weaknesses depending on the phone/rom your running.
ShootMe is great, even let's you take videos (though they aren't perfect)

I use Shootme! LOL Oh btw for renaming apps on your Homescreen, try an app called Bettercut. Lets you change icons and name of an app on your homescreen.
I like ShootMe. The quality is good and it has a neat shake to take picture feature.
another vote for ShootMe, as stated above i really like the shake to take a picture feature.
+ for shoot me. Only wish there was another way to start the video. Like being to shake to start or cover the light sensor. Don't particularly like to start the video showing me starting the video...lol
I had an Motorola milestone, i sold them, them bought an i9100 awesome everywhere 500 times more than milestone

In deed i haven't try it, download it and awesome but no solarize effect camera ZOOM FX neither.
Let me try they other in the market.
The Atrix 2 default camera apk has this effect
4th result of a google search for "android camera app solarize effect".
http://www.androidtapp.com/camera-effects/
Same it edit photos after taken. But no live capture with that effect, and neither those can take videos. That's myprimary goal, videos with solarize effect
Try "Camera Pro" by Swiss Codemonkeys. It is a paid app, but it's pretty cheap. Careful, there is another app out there also called "Camera Pro", by someone else.
I don't know for sure if it has what you need, but it says it has the solarize effect.

Not sure what hi speed camera from the Note 2 is, but if it is a fast burst camera mode, I downloaded a free app from either Amazon or the play store called Fast burst Camera that allows you to take literally hundreds of pictures in a few seconds. The resolution isn't great, but the pictures are literally like a flip book. I think the resolution has more to do with the actual camera in the Note rather than the app itself.
Slow Motion Feature
ITs the slow motion feature the Note 2 has that I want, Hoping that someone will or has been able to get it to work like Paper artist from the Note 2

the one in this link doesn't have the still while shooting video feature which is what i'm wanting
Take a minute to watch the video for this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonydna.framegrabber
Its better than Fast Burst camera app because the resolution can be higher.
This app has very bad reviews of it not working on ICS from what i can see in just the top comment which are usually supposed to highlight the good qualities of an app.

4.4 stars with almost 700 reviews. Top review is most recent. I bought the app and used it with an old low res video. In 40 seconds I installed it, figured it out, and made a picture. Galaxy Note. I give it five stars.
I dunno it doesn't seem promising when even in your screen shot it says its not working on a galaxy note hahaha. The idea of the app is great though.

I figured anyone would take it for granted I was using a note. . . I mean we are in the note apps section talking about apps on a note. The proof is in the result I posted along with the statement "Galaxy Note". I guess you missed that stuff.
Any luck with Stock Camera
Hi Captain,
Did you find any luck with Stock camera port? I am using Probam custom rom. Everything is just perfect except the slow-mo video recording feature that was available on the stock rom. Below are the options which I have already tried but no luck
- Took Titanium backup of stock camera and tried to restore it back on 4.2.2 Probam ROM but it always stuck on RESTORING.
-Found flashable zip from XDA, it flashes successfully through clockwork mod but in the end stock camera/gallery app doesnt show up
- Extracted SGN2 Gallery + Camera.zip (apk) files to /system/app/ but it says files already exist.
Any idea whats an alternate available?
Thanks,
Fast burst works fine

The problem is taking slow mo videos was never just a software feature. Note 2 has hardware ability to record videos on 60 FPS which are then played back and give you a jerkless slow mo video.
Isnt there any way to get the stock camera back?
Regards,
Sorry, friend. My wife hijacked my phone. Now I'm stuck with an old international note with a cracked screen. I never checked what speeds are possible with the new burst feature in the stock camera. I will check it and report back.

Last time I checked, the stock cameras will only work with TouchWiz. Unless you are talking about the pure Android camera. In that case JamieD uploaded that latest camera in this topic here:

By your comment I'm confused if you are talking about the same phone???
Anyways, assuming you are talking about Xiaomi Mi3, the stock camera app itself is good enough... If you are using digital zoom then i suggest not to do that because no matter which phone camera you use digital zoom makes it look grainy...
Also check if the resolution has been changed in the settings...
Restore to default setting if something has been changed and try again...
