Heads up Its not an lcd, its an amoled screen. And amoled are more susceptible to burn in/pixel degradation then lcd from what I read. Theres a thread in the general section about notification bar problems. If your screen was bad it would be very noticeable. One thing you can do is turn down the brightness or use auto brightness.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

[Q] Galaxy S screen brighter than my S II AMOLED Plus screen

I have used a Galaxy S from an year until recently last week, i exchanged it to get a new Galaxy S II. I like the phone very much and i still think its the best phone ever made. But i notice that even my screen has the yellow discoloration problem as others. I don't bother much about it but what made me curious was that a friend of mine purchased a new Galaxy S a few days back when i brought my S II. I put both the displays side by side and noticed this
1) The display of the Galaxy S was much brighter than my S II at 0 and 100 levels of brightness. I felt that my S II screen was more dull and yellowish while that of S was brighter and greyish
2) In direct sunlight, the visibility of the Galaxy S screen was more than my S II at both 0 and 100 levels of brightness.
I was surprised by these findings and I want to know whether
a) Super AMOLED+ brightness is supposed to be better than Super AMOLED ?
b) Or does my SII have a faulty screen and can i get it replaced ( purchased mine a week back) ?
To be honest, i always used my old Galaxy S at 0% brightness and even at times i felt it was too much brightness in a dark room, so used the Screenfilter app. But thats not the case with my S II, i have to use it at around 20% in the same dark room. So, i want to know whether my particular screen is defective or is it the same for everyone else ?
Settings display background effect: choose dynamic
And you can turn off the adjust screen for power option in display settings

u sure u disabled power saving mode for the display? That usually causes a duller/greyish screen...

All I can say, we all have the same GS II, same screen, same Yellowish tint, Bluish white in Auto/Low Brightness, some admit it, some not. If you wanna exchange it, exchange it, but I bet you will a same screen like before. And the comparison about Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED +, I too think that S-AMOLED is better than Plus in case of Low/Auto Brightness. I previously had a Wave S8500, and I never turned the Brightness to even 1 in one year as on lowest settings the screen was gorgeous. But I can't say that for GS II. I disabled the Auto brightness already, I just can't take that Bluish White effect. I am on 20%, the screen is cool now, still I am not that impressed with it as I thought I'd be. I don't think it's a feature of S-AMOLED Plus screens but a manufacturing fault, now Samsung admits it or not it's a different story. But I still hope that a Firmware update could turn things in the right way, just a hope. I purchased this device for only having another OLED screen, cause I've saw ARC and Play, and they just couldn't stand against my Wave, but if I knew that GS II would have this type of screen I'd not ignored those phones. Let one more OLED+ device from Samsung get released and if that one has this problem too, I am out from Samsung forever, yea I know they simply don't care for one customer, but I do care for me.
Regards.
I have disabled the Power saving mode, and also tried the three different modes- standard, dynamic, and movie. But i didn't find much difference. SAMOLED+ is supposed to be brighter than SAMOLED, right ? Other than this the phone is marvelous !!!

I used a Galaxy S and it was an excellent phone with Lagfix and Darkys ROM. Briefly, in between I used an Xperia Play for a few days and it was so laggy, many apps used to force close, etc. So i decided to go for a dual core and I think there is no match for S II in this regard. I am very satisified with this but just wanted to know about this SAMOLED+ screen and it was supposed to be better than SAMOLED. To be honest, i always used my old Galaxy S at 0% brightness and even at times i felt it was too much brightness in a dark room and hence used the Screenfilter app. But thats not the case with my S II, i have to use it at around 20% in the same dark room. Whoa there! Extreme much? You'll never get another Samsung because the screen isn't bright enough at 0% brightness? Lol. Are you serious? Oh well, to each his own.

The plus got nothing to do with brightness but with subpixels. Its red blue and green in every subpixel where amoled got red green and blue green. Makes the image sharper to read.

Yes, that's correct. It's not an improvement for me coming from S-AMOLED and I don't like it. When I've seen better I won't bear a lesser.
You are correct in that part.

Does anyone know, how much power is saved by using the display powersave mode? I just tried turning it off and the screen looks much brighter and crisper. Is activating power save mode worth it?
My SGS1 not as bright as this one and not ad good in sunlight.
Yellow tint if i have it i dont care i dont see it.
Dont like SGS2 sell it simple answer.

SGS is slightly brighter than SGS II. It's in almost every review that measures screen brightness. AMOLED Plus was updated for sharpness, not brightness.

I am not bothered about the yellow tint either. What bothers me is the brightness level of SGSII when compared to a SGSI. Having used a SGSI for an year, the new SGS II has to be atleast equal to it. But lesser than the previous one is unacceptable. Thats my point

Yeah it seems a strange comment.... one thing that always annoyed me about the original Galaxy S was the screen was TOO bright on the lowest setting - it was a nightmare if you were using it in bed with the lights off.

[Q] Burn In / Image Retention

After seeing the screen on the samsung galaxy s II i'm pretty confident that its what i'll be getting, but...I'm concerned about burn in.
One of the reasons I was leaning towards the htc sensation is that with slcd I don't have to worry about burn in at all, but how much do i really have to worry about it?
I havn't seen many people complain about burn in on the first galaxy s, but there are still some cases.
Is it reduced on the galaxy s II?
Are the chances of this happening so low that I shouldnt worry about it?
How cheap/easy is it to replace the screen if this happens?
im interested in this as well
Hi,
I´m an Omnia 2 I8000 owner since 10.2009. It was the first phone on market with Samsungs Amoled-screen.
I allways use Black themes.
I don´t have any problems with screen burn up to now. You can see it slightly on testimages, but in normal use, you won´t notice it at all! I would post pictures, but my Display was replaced(Dust under the screen) a month ago, so its new again...
Rgds
Is there even such a problem on AMOLED screens? I came from a Nexus One with AMOLED screen and never had such issues, and I believe the screen was made by Samsung too.

Amoled screens are basically plasma screens for phones.
They're completely different technologies, but the pros/cons are almost the same.
lcds make a picture but the backlight is what allows us to see it so clearly.
amoled make their own light, but they have a lifespan.
so the pixels that get the most use tend to fade, and leave a 'burn in' effect.

Burn in happens as early as 4-6 months of use with most AMOLED based screens, this happens mostly on the clock section of the notification bar, there is a long thread about this on the SGS1 forums. Honestly burn in is the least of concerns, be more concerned about the yellow tinting issue on most SAMOLED Plus screens.
Well ive had a samsung jet for some 3-4 years, one of the first amoleds (i think)
and i dont have a hint of burn in, i also got a htc desire after that because i fell in love with amoled and that doesnt have any burn in either. Now i have my sgs2 and the amoled love continues. I have a plasma screen at home so i am very familliar with burn in (nasty shock in the morning when falling asleep with it on!).
I think if samsung thought these were going to burn in they would have put screen protection/pixel flushing just like they did with my samsung plasma tv. Its really not a worry in my mind and i use bright blue glowing themes which are the most aggressive on amoled pixels.
Ive read horror stories of burn in but those are just faulty screens/handsets.
Heres the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892498&page=16&highlight=amoled+burnin
what im still unable to find is how easy it would be to replace the screen if it were to burn in, and what it would cost.
never knew these AMOLED screens have image retention problems.
My Nexus One had terrible screen burn, the Froyo notification bar was clearly visable when not actually displayed. Hope the SGS2 does not go this way.

Yes there is a problem. My nexus one has permanent burn in. And I made a thread with many others posting pics of their burn in.
Its just a trait of amoled screens. My status bar, clock am pm, and keyboard are all burnt in to the screen on my nexus one.

Yes, but i cant find anything saying if its been improved on the amoled plus screens.
I would assume that the efficiency boost would lessen the effect a bit because it should boost the pixel lifespan, but im not 100%.

Yes that is the question now, we don't know how much amoled plus improves this issue. I have to think that its gonna be much improved with this new generation.
Mine already seems to suffer from burn-in, most noticeable whenever my auto-brightness shifts to lower thresholds (had my SGS2 since the last day of June 2011). I wonder if Sammy can do any replacement for me.
I got a burn in too. The four bottom icons start to be visible with notification bar pulled down.
Looks like I ain't the only one with an sgs2 with this issue then. I notice it's only visible at low brightness - approximately 10-15%. And my notification bar has always been black.

Got mine since it's release in May, always used very low brightness settings and a low screen-off-timer, 30 seconds or one minute.
Status bar is visible on red background and very visible on blue, some icons and the clock time are present all the time.
Really pathetic after very moderate and careful use in five month.

The display is noticeably tinted pink, especially side by side with vibrant. Anyone noticing this? Is this a defect and should i exchange the phone at walmart from where i bought?

Unfortunately my camera was not good enough to pick up the difference. I scoured youtube and got this picture, and this is exactly how it looks. Vibrant is a bit cooler compared to One S in the picture. But Galaxy S3 display looks exactly the same. What do you guys think?
it's kind of hard to tell by picture but is it possible because your lights are dim? For whatever reason, GSIII default light settings are low...really low. Samsung is being cautious or something...I mean their Auto-brightness future sucks because of this, they make it really dim.
Hmm..Really?! The picture is pretty clear in showing the reddish tint on Galaxy S3 screen. But on that youtube video not a single comment about it. Makes me wonder if this is normal and I guess I am too used to the cooler blue tint on the Vibrant? It has been just a few days I got the phone and exchanging it at Walmart is not a problem, otherthan reinstalling all apps and other setup. But I just wanted to know if this is normal and if so I will be getting exactly identical phone and it is just gonna be a waste of time.
Looks like a defect to me, mine is not like that!
My GS3 is on the left, GS2 on the right. Both at 100% brightness

Thanks, your picture gives me some relief. The SG3 definitely has a warmer tone and I think at 30% brightness it makes the whites a little pink. This combined with the fact that I compared to blueish super bright screen of Vibrant may have caused my panic. The brightness of SG3 screen is definitely low, I mean minimum usable is 30% and you have to set it at 50-70% for most situations. Vibrant is super bright where i can use it even at 0% brightness and anything above 50% really hurt the eyes.
My GS3 does not look anything like that, you can easily see the pink in your display.
Defect, return it.

Strange tear under screen

So here is my dilemma and I need some community input or advice. I have a GN2 titanium. I bought it at my employer Bestbuy. Thing is, there is a strange looking line that resembles a tear under the screen that is slightly curved and is about 3/4" long, maybe a tad more. You can ONLY SEE it when the brightness is turned ALL THE WAY DOWN and you are on a screen that is dark. Now if you go into the light with the darkness down all the way it goes away. Full brightness it cannot be seen. Not even at half brightness or 1/4 brightness can it be seen. Thing is I could easily return it BUT bestbuy stopped carrying the titanium on verizon the day they got it! Crazy right , in other words we are sold out of titanium and are not getting more in. I could always get a white one but I don't think I want a white one. Truth be told I think it's just bugging me and need to tell someone lol. If it was your GN2 would you for one even notice it,and if so would you just roll with it? I have to do all the steps above just to see it. I noticed it when watching on mx player in bed at night on low brightness. The touch screen works fine in that area and everything. I wish I could take a picture but I cant seem to get it to show up in a picture.
tl;dr ?
-Strange tear under glass
-causes no touchscreen/pen issues
-only viewable at 0 brightness , in the dark , on a dark image
-exchange for a white GN2
-live with it

Yep both my Note 2's have the same problem, both are Titanium Gray. My brother got a launch day Marble White from the Verizon store and his screen is immaculate. Not a single black spot or line on his screen. We flipped the lights and tested them using the same app. Once our eyes adjusted, which didn't take more than 10 seconds, it was immediately clear the difference between my phone and his. His screen not only had a deeper black than mine, but it was free of any markings while mine looked brighter and had noticeable splotches all over.
Niiiiiiice.

My S6 Edge not as bright as GF S6.

So after reading posts about a pink tint to the screen, i decided to put it next to my girlfriends white s6. Wish i hadnt. Her s6 is CONSIDERABLY more bright than mine with a white screen. Didnt notice much of a pink tint, even though i believe its faintly there. More worried about the brightness level.
I made sure everything was the same. Same screen mode, same brightness level, same picture. Hers was much brighter and much more white than mine. Will take some side by side pics when i get home. Really dissapointed actually... Thinking about going with a regular s6 if i can switch it out.. Just to many problems plagueing the edge.
Anyone else notice the same thing?
Yes this is a problem. Both Edges we had were returned for that issue. They were also darker than the regular S6.

im not super worried about the pink tint, as many galaxy phones have had this issue and is later not as noticable, but the darker, less bright-screen would diminish image quality IMO.
What did you do? get them exchanged and next ones were better? Did u just get regular s6?

Didnt notice much of a pink tint, even though i believe its faintly there. More worried about the brightness level.
I made sure everything was the same. Same screen mode, same brightness level, same picture. Hers was much brighter and much more white than mine. Will take some side by side pics when i get home. Really dissapointed actually... Thinking about going with a regular s6 if i can switch it out.. Just to many problems plagueing the edge.
Anyone else notice the same thing?

This was known some time ago. You should read AnandTech reviews at least before you purchase a phone. S6 will always be more bright than the edge.
Try putting a flashlight on the light sensor with auto bright off and brightness turned all the way up. Watch how bright and vibrant the screen gets. It is a programming error. We traded to regular S6s. I noticed my S6 screen also had a very dull screen. Returned it for an M9.

im only reading things about it BARELY being brighter, and all other numbers show the edge screen come out on top of the s6.

you mentioned two s6's. Was only one of the screens dull? Was the other one flawless? Opinion of m9 vs s6?
so the darker screen on the s6e compared to my girlfriends s6 is just a software brightness bug? i can live with this.. My screen isnt super pink either... If my screen is just as bright as my girlfriends, then ill stick it out for a software update.
My wife is fine with her screen. It seems better than my returned S6. The M9 feels better in hand to me. Speakers are not as loud but sound way better on the M9. The colors on the screen of the M9 are not as vibrant as the S6. Whites are better though. No stutters or issues besides that in my M9. I've yet to feel it get any hotter than the S6.

I actually read my first AnandTech phone review because of this comment. I've been using the site mainly for computer parts comparisons and reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised by just how detailed their phone review was. Thanks for posting!:good:
Also, however, to respond the forum OP's question, OP should definitely check if the auto brightness setting is enabled. With it on, max brightness goes way up, while with it off, the regular max brightness is relatively darker.

Edge is way brighter according to this LUX test, maybe you got a defective unit
okay been doing alot of reading. There seems to be a defect in the edge model, just about all of them. With auto brightness off (meaning the phone has no control over brightness of the screen), in a dim room with brightness bar cranked up, the screen will dim. When i did this test, my room was dimly lit. Will do some more tests later when iget home.

okay, so heres a video i took to demonstrate the issue.
its a big difference in my Nexus 6 vs the Edge. The Nexus is MUCH brighter.
I bought today S6 Edge and that was for me quite a disappointment.
But when you put a flashlight to a light sensor (or whatever it calls), you can see that S6 Edge has two more modes-both brighter. The first brighter mode is bright like S6 and the second one like S6 under the flashlight (or sunlight). That shows that the screens are same and that the problem is software. I cant wait to see, whether they solve this with the next update.

Same thing here. Samsung is still not solving the issue and it is aware since more than a month! How difficult is to be solved? I'm not sure they will ever solve it at this point.
Guess this is affecting only the carrier variants. Mines a international GSM g925i and I am in a dark room typing this with auto brightness turned off and brightness at 40pc or so..the screen is damn bright and it has remained this way without dimming.. So not a issue here. Also I think the brightness at 40pc is killing my eye right now..so its quite good. May be a feature requested by the carriers who knows...
No it's affecting the no brands also. Mine was no brand bought on the web store, in NL.
