Chances are, Nexus 5 getting a 5" IGZO IPS display - G2 General

What do you think? Will you prefer Nexus 5 to G2 then?

Don't think it will. IGZO is a Sharp screen and we all know that this phone will be basically a g2 made by LG, who make their own screens

exactly LG make their own screens. but did it crossed your mind that battery in N5 supposed to be of mere 2300mAh capacity? And the display size will be not exactly 5,2" did you noticed that?

The battery capacity has nothing to do with the screen so you can just drop it there. In terms of the display, LG makes their own displays for supply chain and logistics reasons. Just because the G2 uses a 5.2 inch screen made by LG and the Nexus 5 is rumored to be a 5 inch screen doesn't mean that LG has to outsource its displays to anyone. LG makes displays in all different sizes for all the different phones they produce and LG has a huge manufacturing plant that can easily switch up part of their production line to produce a 5 inch display for the Nexus 5.
Personally I don't see LG using the IGZO IPS display made by Sharp for the Nexus 5 because LG makes their IPS displays just fine and they can make it for cheaper.

You not seeing my point, aren't you? And when did I mention Sharp anyway?
The rumors so far were either N5 will have OLED 5" panel (Megalodon, remember?) or N5 will have 5" IPS panel. But did you stumbled upon news saying LG will produce 5" mobile panels applied with Oxide Thin Film Transistor (TFT) which is viewed as the next generation TFT technology.? And this display is flexible too http://tech2.in.com/news/general/lg-showcases-5inch-hd-tft-oxide-display-at-sid-display-week/874114?
The Oxide Thin Film Transistor is exactly the igzo tech either of LG own patent or licensed from Sharp. The point of it is lower power required, hence 2300mAh only battery, slim 1mm profile and hence thickness of Nexus 5 of 5mm or 6mm max. Nexus 5 will be pure screen, slim and thin, thinner then G2 I believe
And there were words that LG and Samsung both have flexible display up their sleeves and Samsung will reveal it's in October in Note 3 special edition. So I think its perfect time for LG to touche in response

It's rumored 4.7 inch. And the battery capacity has everything to do with good phone vs crap your gonna cry about later. So you can just drop your rude attitude there. Point blank the nexus will be cheaper hardware otherwise it has nothing to offer other than lack luster stock. I doubt it will be unlockable on ATT or VZN unless it's hacked vs. Being sold as a dev edition full price.

Even if this works out a smaller battery is going to be destroyed by a small amount of wakelocks. kitkat better have some amazing battery saving code in it.

Sony Xperia Z has 2300 mAh battery and 5 Inch screen. Batterylife is pretty decent though, so it should be ok on the Nexus. Although, it would still be nice to see it come with a bigger battery. Even if it makes the device a bit thicker imho.

Yea,there is no Motorola nexus coming out this year, period. So stop complicating things, we all know it'll be just that one LG g2 based nexus this year, with minor screen and battery changes.

I hope it is identical to the g2. Imagine the dev support then.

You don't need to mention Sharp. The fact that you are asking about IGZO IPS display which is made by Sharp implies this. Only news I read so far is that Samsung plopped 115 Million investment in Sharp for LCD to help secure its supplies of LCD panels for Samsung. Since the Nexus 5 has passed through the FCC already, I highly doubt it is taking advantage of any of this bendable display technology. All LG is going to do is make the same IPS display as the LG G2 but in a smaller 5 inch form factor. Also we don't know the thinness of the phone since it wasn't listed in the FCC documents of the rumored Nexus 5. We need to wait for more details but the whole bendable display rumor is garbage. The Note 3 was rumored to have it and it wasn't and I highly doubt Google would want this on their flagship Nexus device.

All rumors and conjecture. Sound like the N5 is going to be some miracle phone. Doesn't need a big battery because the display doesn't use any power, etc.

No. The new Nexus lost my interest after I saw the smaller battery size. If it can't produce the same or better battery life than the G2...forget the Nexus.

if u use Wifi all the time, if not it will maybe last u 8 hours with 2 hours screen time.
No amount of tweaks, undervolting/underclocking can get you substantial battery life, even if you UV you run into the problem of instability or running laggy. your best bet is get something with enormous battery like this phone or the Samsung Note 2 or 3

This thread feels somehow misplaced here, why not place it in QA or, even better, in Nexus 5 thread instead?
Just my five cents...

Buttery Smooth Glass like Nexus 4?

Hey guys. I've heard multiple people comment on how the glass on the front of the Nexus 4 is smoother than any phone screen they've ever touched. Nothing to do with the software or jellybean but like the actual glass surface of the screen.
Does the LG Optimus G have this same buttery smooth glass? Has anyone been able to compare the 2 side by side?
My Nexus 4 will be arriving this week, but as I've always had SD storage on my phones, and I'm on AT&T in Vegas where LTE speeds are 15-50mbps and HSPA is 1-3mbps I'm really thinking I may sell the Nexus and pick up the Optimus G instead. But this butter screen I'm hearing about intrigues me, hopefully it's on the E970 too

Not sure about "buttery", but it is slippery as **** all over when you first get it. Be careful with this phone! After a few days of use where your hand-oils get on it, it's not as bad.
As others have remarked - build quality is amazing, battery life is great. Loving this phone... just need to get Google Wallet on it somehow

We do also have the latest technology from LG, where they have incorporated the touch sensor into the glass. This makes for better response as well as better clarity since the pixels are closer to the screen.
I'ver noticed that this screen gets small scratches much quicker then my Galaxy SII, I had that phone for 2 years and it seriously only got a few tiny scratches through all my use. But after only 4 weeks with my OG, it has the same amount if not more haha. I may return it for a replacement as soon as my screen protectors come in.
What's your source for that info?

It feels buttery smooth to me. It's the most slippery feeling glass I have ever touched on a phone. Let me put it this way: I felt compelled to purchase an insurance plan for the phone. I have NEVER had an insurance on a phone before this phone.

I actually had it on a completely horizontal surface and it slid off LOL.
I had my phone sitting on the AT&T box that the phone came in, completely flat on my desk. 2 seconds later the phone slid off of it. This is my definition of buttery smooth.

The other thing I've noticed is that in addition to the smoothness, it doesn't get as smudged up as my prior phones. And it cleans much easier as well, making it awesome. I hate having all kinds of fingerprints on my phone, and this one never has any due to the way the glass is engineered. Awesome stuff.

So it's pretty much safe to say the screen, touch screen, and glass are basically identical on the Nexus 4 and Optimus G?
My Nexus 4 says it shipped days ago but still no tracking information shows up...was supposed to come yesterday and didn't and yet UPS doesn't know where it's at lol. I just ordered an Optimus G off ebay at a great price so if anything I can try both phones and sell whichever one I don't like, but I really do enjoy LTE over AT&T's horrid HSPA in Vegas. It's basically same exact speeds as 3G. So I'll probably end up keeping the OG even though I love the look of the Nexus. Just put a damn LTE radio in there Google!
This is exactly why I got the first silicone jelly case I could find even if it is normally for an LS 970 instead. Getting tired of picking my phone off the floor..

This.
The Note 3 isnt a phone as much as it is a tablet that can make phone calls. The G2 is a phone and no where near a tablet.
And 4.3 isnt a selling point, IMHO, because there are loopholes that were fixed that make third party dev even harder. Just look at the S4 with ME7 or higher.
So far loving the G2. I considered the Note 3 for about 10 minutes, but its just too big and too expensive for my needs (which are, a phone). I can go buy an N7 and have money left over.

In the end its your choice, I'm frankly tired and bored of samsungs design. And I despise that front home button lol. But this phone to me hits the sweet spot, the note 3 otoh, also I see the lg's cpu speed is clocked higher out the box I believe.
Note 3
5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 in 168 g (5.93 oz) <- bad
Lg g2
5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 in 143 g (5.04 oz) <- good
p.s. The screen too, no contest. Lg's display is beautiful even with that annoying auto brightness issue which will def get fixed soon.
And don't forget about the Note 3's best features.... Lag and stutter. I'm completely done with Samsung until they optimize their software. Get the Note 3 at your own risk. The G2 will end up the better choice imo.

I think it all depends on what you use your phone for. I do lots of web browsing and watching tv shows. Bigger screen wins.

Even though Samsung burned me with the Galaxy S4, I'm willing to give them a second chance.
I'm a bit skeptical after having two lag fest S4's, I really hope they got the S-Lag ironed out with the N3.
The things that intrigued me with the N3 is the new faux leather plastic back cover, 5.7" screen while being roughly the size of the 5.5" Note 2. It's also rumored to use the AB S800 binned SOC. Higher CPU(2.3GHz) and GPU frequency(550MHz). 4.3 out of the box, most likely better sounding speaker, S-Pen (which I used a lot on my Note 2). Expandable memory and removable battery is also a plus.
The things that I am not too thrilled about is the new pentile matrix display, I guess it wouldn't be so bad at such high pixel density, it didn't bother me too much on my S4 but would prefer a good traditional IPS LCD over any AMOLED. I'm also disappointed it lacks hardware optical image stabilization, I always thought my S4's camera would be amazing if it had included OIS. I also wished Samsung would tone down their gimmicky air gesture ect. bloat crap or better yet not include it at all on their more premium Note line.
I always thought my Note 2 was almost the perfect phone (probably the phone I held onto the longest), just wished it had a higher resolution screen, more ram, capacitive touch buttons that work with the s-pen and a higher resolution camera with OIS. Looked like the N3 addressed *most* of my wishlist, but then again a lot of baggage came along for the ride. I just have my fingers crossed that it doesn't lag down, but then again I don't have high hopes much after using the S4. I swear if it lags I'm going to use an iPhone 5S as my daily.

Still, I suppose screens have reached such ridiculous DPI levels that the PenTile AMOLEDs no longer look like a sack of s**t. Unless you prefer natural colours, that is. Plus, I'd wait 6 months after any new Samsung device has been released before buying one in case they've forgotten how to make eMMC controllers again

Actually the battery life has been proven to be better and the Screen is also the best screen out on the market right now accuracy wise, yes the screen is almost perfectly calibrated and the colors are very good. The GPU is also more potent (578mhz over 450mhz). BUT its made by Samsung so it still a piece of s***

You do know that your posts is full of innacuracies and regurgitated fan ? crap? You're wrong pretty much on all points.
I for one am sticking to g2 for a time being and cost versus benefits ratio is definitely in g2 favor.

the camera on the g2 is a hit and miss piece of dung. It is by far the most inconsistent camera ive ever used on a smart phone. In a low light shoot out my lumia 920/iphone5s/then g2. and in decent light it is still a fuzzy grainy noisy phone but when the light is optimal its wonderful. the gs5 is similar in terms of camera performence except the shutter is almost instant like on the iphone 5s. the g2 takes way too long to focus and shoot.plus the s5 is water resistant . personally id wait another month and see what the G3 is all about. thats what im doing.
Wait and see. I'd call the S5 and the G2 too close to call, as they each have their own strengths.
The G3 sounds like it'll be better than the S5, thus the wait and see approach...

Really? So I'm imagining my friends' (often repeatedly) bricked S3s and Note 2s? I'm imagining that all the comparison shots I've seen (especially low light) make the G2 camera with its OIS look better than the S5? I'm imagining that even though Samsung released kernel patches for the broken ERASE/DISCARD on S2/S3/Note/Note2 eMMC (not to mention other manufacturer's devices that also used f**ed Sammy eMMC), the performance of those devices now sucks in comparison to other Android hardware running TRIM enabled Android? I'm imagining that the S5 has a smaller capacity battery and I get 7-8 hours SOT out of the G2 running PA4 beta4? Oh, and AMOLEDs - even if you can't see the subpixels, they've finally decided to stop calibrating them to a cartoon colour space, and you can read them outdoors: I've seen myself that even the panel on the S5 suffers from wild differences in colour temperature at different brightness levels and I see no evidence that it won't be subject to the rapid decay that is AFAIK inherent to their manufacture at the moment, the display on my S2 looks crap now. Its gone purple. And the device has hardly been used.
And finally, I'm imagining the fact that my girlfriends old S2, which we replaced with a Nexus 4 after 6 months because it was so crap is the most unstable POS with the worst battery life of any Android device I've ever had the misfortune to own, regardless of what it was running?
GPL compliance? Bootloader security? Any other reasons to hate Samsung required? They're a blight on the face of the Android ecosystem.

the camera on the g2 is a hit and miss piece of dung.

I see that indeed you have strong feelings on the subject, and I can go with you, toe to toe, on all points, but I won't. You're just too much all over the place with your arguments, and sufficiently off topic, to make it really not worthwhile discussing this further. Salutations! ?

changing from G2 to galaxy s5 is not an upgrade. some things like battery and screen are outright downgrade. some other things like fingerprint scanner/heartrate monitor are an upgrade.
The key thing is: you have to decide what factors you personally prioritise. If fingerprint scanner is more important for you than good battery life, go for the S5. Otherwise dont "upgrade".

So we can summarise this interaction with the following:
'You are wrong'
'Am I? Because my experience and evidence, while largely anecdotal, suggests very much the opposite.'
'I have no counterargument, you are wrong because I say you are and I know best'
Well, that was a waste of time.
Anyway, I hope you have a lovely day too! :highfive:
Edit: But to clarify, you're disputing that there was a widespread issue with bricked S2s, S3s, Notes and Note 2s due to faulty eMMC? You're disputing that the brightness of subpixels in AMOLED displays decay quite noticeably and at a different rate by colour (which is why they're PenTile in the first place) within the typical usage span of a mobile device equipped with one (say 2 years?) You're disputing that the CM device maintainers for Exynos devices threatened to quit/did quit over Samsung's delayed and dysfunctional kernel source dumps? Because I assure you, all of those are FACTS. Not all totally relevant to the S5, but factual. They've proven they have reckless disregard for their customers and go out of their way to make things difficult for the kind of people who hang out here on XDA.

I do not own the S5, but tinkered with one a bit on the day of release. I am sure in some respects the S5 is an upgrade to the G2. I hear the camera is better than the stock G2 camera. Battery life is also improved. The thing is, the battery life on my G2 is soo good ( and so much better than the S4 that I had previously) that I cannot imagine the S5 offering me a noticeable improvement. As for the camera, since I started using modded cameras (Jinsu or Xdabbeb) I have not had any issues. The stock camera had some issues (like the long delay before shooting and i think low-light performance). I think the two phones are so close, that you may be better off waiting a few weeks to see what the G3 has to offer.
I returned my s5 after 7 hours. the camera is garbage. the phone got as hot as the s4 did. the screen while nice, did not match the accuracy and whites of the g2. it had crappy build quality bc it has the body shifting issue my s3 had, where the battery didn't fit right in the cavity and would move inside that cavity and made the phone twist and crack everytime you picked it up.
I stuck to my g2 and I'll wait for the g3.

I tried an s5 at an att store yesterday and I like the feel of the device better than the g2 and the camera was great. It was super fast and took insanely sharp images. Low light wasn't good. The screen is gorgeous the weight is good. Its not a great leap over the g2 but it is a nice device. The g3 is rumored to have a very high resolution screen which is useless . hopefully they fix the bad camera. All LG has to do is water proof , fix the camera low light and noise issues and possible up the battery to 3400. That would be golden

Hi! we don't know how genuine those pics are we all know the images could not be of the actual phone
Though one thing i can tell with confidence it that Oneplus 2 will have two sims slots
horrific design if true. and with a price increase as well? simply won't sell.
I actually don't mind the design.
Not sure why people are complaining about the back, it's fully replaceable.
As of the front, the fingerprint scanner had to go somewhere, but they kept the screen at 5.5 and side bazels are ultra thin.. The whole phone is much smaller than the oneplus one...
Let's wait and see!

Here's a video of the phone. Looks exactly like the old Galaxy S2 on the bottom and the bezels are still too big everywhere. And capacitive buttons? Not sure what OnePlus was thinking here..

Yep, if that's the new OnePlus two in the video, I'm not buying one.

Nor will many others, especially for the increased $450 price. The top bezel of the phone looks exactly like the Nexus 5 and the bottom bezel is identical to the Galaxy S2. This is, at best, extremely bizarre.. but for the vast majority, totally unacceptable.
It's a real shame, I was hoping the OP2 would be my next phone. There's also some reports that the screen panel and camera aren't very good from leaked camera test shots.
Of course, people are also freaking out about the low Antutu benchmarks and are faulting the underclocked SD 810. At this point, I wouldn't touch any SD 810-based hardware.
No word on whether Oxygen is improved at all.

Lol even my lg gflex 2 gets 58000 even with throttling... I think maybe it is another cheaper version not the "normal"one of op2. Some previous leaked geekbench scores and antutu showed far better results.

Z Ultra vs. Nexus 6?

Now that a BNIB Nexus 6 (not 6p) is $300, I am getting the itch to swap my XZU for one. The N6 has a slightly faster processor, thinner bezels, higher screen resolution, more RAM, better camera (with flash), bigger battery, and oleophobic gorilla glass 3 instead of a plastic screen protector with non-oleophobic glass underneath. But I love my unique XZU with its bigger (non AMOLED) screen, thinner body, SD card slot, and water resistance.
Am I crazy to switch, or is the N6 a worthy successor at its current price? I'm guessing it'd cost around $100 to switch (sell the XZU for $200ish).

I wouldn't make such a switch (and I have tried the N6). It is a better idea to keep the Ultra until new Snapdragon 820 based devices with bigger screens are out.
To me, the smaller display and limited storage are the key deal breakers and despite the benefits of higher screen resolution, I haven't been happy with the color reproduction on some N6s I have been trying.
From my point of view, there are no device which can fully replace the Ultra just yet. There are devices that better some parameters (such as higher display resolution and a better camera) but it usually falls back on areas such as display size or developer support and so forth.
What I would recommend is rather to keep the Ultra and see if Sony introduces a Z5 Tablet Compact, which could work as a direct replacement (I have decided to get an 8 inch device as a replacement when something with Snapdragon 820, 4 GB RAM, 2K or 4K display etc is in the market).
After I saw the nasty screen burn, I'dstay away from AMOLED.

Also, you know how most smokers' teeth go from white to yellow after some years? Yup, same with AMOLED. Sure, it looks pretty, but that beauty doesn't last.
Dat goddamn AMOLED. Dim and red-tinted as hell. You wouldn't want that. Even as a Nexus fan I deem it my most disliked Nexus phone.

If i had to buy a new phone today i would def buy a nexus 6 for $300. Fortunately i dont though, and i am quite happy with my nearly 2 year old 6806. Until it dies, is stolen, is broken or there is a REAL replacement for it, it reamins with me on the daily!

I already did the switch. Ill write another post about this.
Im getting the 64 GB version Nexus 6. Cant wait to try it out. Its the only good 6 coll phablet out there.
Currently I use Z Ultra as LTE tablet on mobile broadband ($10/5GB) and it works.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to find comparable 7" tablet with decent spec.
I am recently own both of them.
The next phone in my plan is Moto X Style.
(Until the customROMs up and Price down.)
I personally think updating from SD 800 to SD 805 is very incremental in nature(benchmark scores support this idea) I'm waiting for z5 ultra or some other phablet with snapdragon 820 and quadHD screen and 4Gb of RAM. I will wait until its a year old and then I will buy that phone. I will make sure that there are a lot of developers for that phone in XDA before buying ?. My phone hits 39k in antutu, if SD 820 hits 75k it will truly be an upgrade.

Got a Nexus 6 now. Rooted it, installed CM12.
A few points:
1. Installing custom roms and Bootloader unlocking is easier than in Z ultra.
2 Gorilla Glass feels smooth, amoled is really great.
3 Camera on Nexus 6 is great. However, its better in stock rom than in CM12.
4. Very smooth. No stutters at all.
Well I currently own a Z Ultra. And recently bought a Nexus 6. I must say its a real pleasure to use the Nexus 6.. Minus the screen size, it is superior in every way.. The speaker is fantastic, developer support is there and still growing, screen with correct calibration u can achieve IPS colour quality, no yellowish/pinkish tint. Camera miles better. Battery a little better. A little better processing power.
Dun get me wrong, I love the Z Ultra, its a absolutely beautiful device and I am definitely going to keep it. But for me I could never really get used to it as a phone. Its simply too big... Development is slowing down as well. Speaker is really a joke.
The lack of a micro SDHC card slot and smaller screen killed the older nexus 6 for me.
The only real negative for me about the XZU is the speaker. Lack of flash is minor issue. After far no complaints.
If there's a Z5 ultra, I'll buy it if it's faster with more RAM and better battery life, and keeps the magnetic charge connector or replaces it with Qi, and keeps the card slot, has decent speakers and new better camera with flash.

It will definitely have a faster CPU, which will be the S820. It will probably have 3-4GB of RAM, battery probably around 3500mAh, no magnetic charging connector, and no Qi. What makes me say these things?
The first 820-devices will hit the market in Q1 2016, so it will most certainly have it too. The Z5 has 3GB of RAM, so it'll probably have 3GB, unless they bump it up to 4, but Sony has never been the OEM who throws a lot of RAM into their devices, like Samsung. So I'll say 3GB, but maybe 4.
The magnetic charger is gone from the Z3+, Z5 and Z5C (Z1, Z2, Z3 had it), so it looks like they're done with the magnetic connector, and it doesn't exist a single Sony product with Qi, or any other wireless charging, so I'd say that that's also a no-go.
But all we can do now is to speculate, so yeah, who knows.
yeah, I know wireless charging is unlikely. I can't understand why Sony didn't adopt it to replace the mag charge coupler. However, one problem with the mag coupler is that if you use a cable rather than a dock, you can attach it the wrong way round, which is down to stupidity plain and simple!

Yup, I managed to plug it in the wrong way into the dock ones and I almost screamed. Nothing was damaged though, but I know a couple of people around here haven't been that lucky. The most annoying thing with a regular USB cable is the plugging, especially when when there's a flap there too. Let's hope there is a Z Ultra 5, or something though. Would love to have it with a better camera and smaller bezels.
To clarify, I meant it's a stupid design, not stupid people doing it. I only connected mine once the other way accidentally for a split second and the phone instantly turned off, luckily not damaged.

Haha, yeah I got that. It's just too easy to connect it the wrong way, and once that happens.. well.. bad things might happen, well, bad thing WILL happen. I had the same experience as you. Connected it wrong for a split second, pulled it off and what I got was a blinking red LED above the screen, rebooted and it was all fine again. Crappy design? Very. But it's more annoying to open the USB flap and connect the charger every night, in my opinion.
