Hi,
My s2 has recently started to have very poor battery life. I am on stock JB firmware. I've never rooted this phone, and don't plan to until the phone is out of warranty, which is still about 6 months away.
The phone was pretty full of apps, so I decided to do a factory reset: settings> backup and reset> factory data reset> format USB storage ticked.
This fixed a problem that I was also having with my WiFi connection being slow, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the battery life problem. The phone does not last the day, even with very little use whereas before it could go at least 2 days before the battery went flat.
Is it possible that something has not been wiped during the process and is still causing a problem? Does the 'format USB storage' option wipe the internal SD card?
In the battery menu the biggest drain in 'android OS' with around 50%. This suggests to me there is still something wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Maybe you need new battery..
Check the apps which gives regular wakelocks..

maybe you need to wipe dalvik cache and recalibrate battery maybe some times it's a bit a galaxy s2 bug
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18600161
Thanks for the replies,
I don't think its the battery that is the problem, as I would expect a more gradual failure than what I have experienced.
I'll try the wakelock detector, that sounds like a useful tool.
Battery cal and dalvik cache wipe may also help. Is there a way of wiping the dalvik cache without CWM recovery? As I said in the first post, I dont want to root the phone
I think stock android recovery has a option to wipe cache...
Stock android recovery does have a cache wipe option. Does this wipe the dalvik cache too?

So u have good battery life on ics??
Thanks for all your replies on this matter guys. I finally sorted the problem. It was the USB charging port. It was dirty. I cleaned it out with some contact cleaner and battery life is all back to normal. Unfortunately my Wi-Fi problem is back, so I'm starting a new thread about that if any of you knowledgeable guys fancy helping me out!

I have JXD s7100B with Android 2.3.4. After rooting it and killing cell apps (and all unnecessary apps) it's battery lasted about 4 hours and it was OK. I used Battery Calibration from Google Play to try and get some more and after that it started acting weird: It could not boot (it would loop the bott screen) unless it's on the charger. After it boots it would drain the battery in less than 20 minutes! When I try to charge it it would charge to full in 10-15 minutes but when I disconect the chatrger, it will again last <20min.
After a few days it started acting normaly (booting and battery life) but few days after that it started the same again:cannot boot unless on charger and lasts <20min. I tried recalibrating battery again with Battery Calibration, reflashing firmware with custom rom and with original rom from the manifacturer - nothing. It still acts the same.
Once, while using bitrider's custom rom (I still can't use URL's ), I booted it and got black screen with no icons nor drawer (i guess launcher crashed) but with only the notification bar (battery level notification, working clock) and touch screen not working. I left it like that to see how the battery will work and it lasted normaly! After that I experimented with two original firmwares from the manifacturer and it drained battery fast like before. If I start JXD in restore mode battery lasts long there too.
So my guess is that battery is OK but software somewhere in Android is reading baterry level of 100% as 100% but of 97-98% as 15% and it forces power off although battery has juice to power the tablet. Is there an app that can tell to Android how to see battery or could I do it by editing the firmware somehow. Enything to make it work like it did.
Do you have a custom recovery? If so, I think there is some way to delete the battery configuration files from recovery. You charge the device until it says it's full, delete the files via recovery and then boot normally again. Then the OS will regenerate the files.
This is the same thing Battery Calibration should do, but maybe it's doing it wrong or something.
It could also be that you have some app that is draining the battery. This would explain why the battery lasts longer when no apps launch. Install BetterBatteryStats from the market to see if some app you have insalled is causing wakelocks (these drain your battery a lot). It is a paid app, but if it fixes your battery life, it's well worth it. You should probably try this before the other thing with the recovery.
Thanks for quick answer

Did that and nothing changed . I charged it to full and used Root explorer to delete batterystats.bin in /data/system and OS made another one but it did nothing.

Done (on your advice): nothing on the lists last longer than 20 seconds (I've just turned it on and let it drain). Application doesn't explains why I can't start it without charging it, why, when I deplet it, I only need to charge it 10-20minutes to full and why it happens on three diferent firmwares (Theoreticaly, maybe the same firmware - one on english, one on chinese and one made from chinese, but that chinese (original) worked normaly before Battery Calibration).
Well, apologies for making you waste money on that app when it didn't help then
Have you tried reinstalling stock ROM after doing a wipe in recovery first and just starting all over again?

I've reinstalled stock ROM a few times but I didn't do wipes. I just did it one after another. I'll do a "wipe data/factory reset" from recovery mode and then install stock ROM. I'll post here what happened.

That might be the problem then, I believe installing new ROMs without doing a "wipe data/factory reset" can sometimes cause issues.
Same . I've done data wipe/factory reset from recovery mode (it has nice "are you sure" screen 7 "No"s + 1 Yes + 3 "No"s) and then installed stock chinese ROM but again battery starts draining 3-4% per minute. Is there a partition in Android that doesn't get wiped with factory reset?
The system partition does not get formatted when performing a wipe "data/factory reset". Can you check to see if you can format the system partition in recovery?
That's an interesting information. I'll see if I could format it somehow. Options that I have in recovery are:
-reboot system now
-apply update from sdcard
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe media partition and
-reboot into factory test
Has anyone ported clockworkmod recovery for your device? If so, that recovery has the option to format system. Has someone created an all in one wipe that included formatting system for your device?

Thank you all who tried to help me - it is nice to see normal, helpfull people on the net. Thank you very much. Here's how I did it with the image for an easier orientation: goo.gl/XpC5I (can't post urls yet but this works. It leads to apad forum where it all started). All the best.
Glad you were able to fix it and good luck with your tablet. Hope everything goes well.

Now my head i about to explode
Anyhow, I have an annoying problem.
Before the upgrade to XXALF6 I noticed no problem other than the known drainage of the battery in idle mode.
I rooted and flashed a ROM and it was ok.
But I got sick of the ROM and I hard reset the phone.
No problems.
Then I upgraded to XXALF6 - still unrooted and all.
First thing I notice is that the phone is lagging a bit now and then. Then when I sent and recieved an SMS or two the phone hung and rebooted.
I seems that happend because when vibration was active.
Also there was a new message saying "com.google.process.gapps" stopped working. And that came up again and again.
As far as I could find online that had to do with syncing the calendar and it should help to clear calendar cache in the phone. It did not.
Then I rooted the phone, just "CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4", no other ROM.
Now the problem was even worse and also the sound stops working on and off all the time.
I tried to find the "com.google.process.gapps" with a file explorer with no luck.
I do find it in ROM Toolbox but its not possible to see the where on the phone the file is even there. Also its not possible to uninstall or even kill the process.
I did notice there seem to be doubles of some apps that I didnt notice previously to flashing CF-Root this time.
And I recall the new guide never mentions to wipe any phone data whatsoever during rooting the phone, and now I am thinking that maybe that should have been in the guide?
Anyhow.. appreciate ANY tips at all, Im so sick of this for the moment ^^
Go to cwm recovery, wipe cash, wipe dalvik cash, wipe data/factory reset, then go to mounts&storage, format system. Then put your phone into the download mode and flash ROM again with odin. This should give you a nice and clean install, without any force closes..

I did wipe all things, cache, Dalvik, battery and user data with CWM.
At the moment it seems the phone is quite okay actually! The only thing left is SU.
U think I have to format system as well? What else would really be "cleaned" out that wasn't allready with the wipes?
Trust me,some of the devs insisted on formating system before flashing their custom roms, and I did have a bunch of force closes, until I decided to go their way and fully format the phone. It then installs everything from the scratch,so there's no way anything to go wrong.. give it a try,and report back... btw. make sure that you DO NOT restore any of the system data,if you use TB
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I pretty much learnt same way as predja it is always better to do full system wipe, it is not always necessary with some roms but if you do it you won't come across the problems you have as often.

hi everybody.
i'm not new in this forum but i onl now registered so i cant post in the android development section ( or so the site says)
i have a Samsung Galaxy S II ( GT-i9100)
i was using a CM10 based Paranoid android Rom for a long time and it was great.
a few days ago i wanted to use a new ROM - [ROM 4.1.2 - 4.2] JellyBam - 20121115 [AOKP.CM10.PARANOID] [AROMA] [SPACESTYLE]
i did exactly what the instructions said :
Put Rom zip in internal SD
wipe data + cache + Dalvik
install rom - using siyah Kernel 5.0.1
after the install the Rom lodas fine and seems to work great but after the first time i need to restart the phone it get stuck in the boot animation
i tried doing another Cache + Dalvik wipe after the install but it still happens
when i was searching the Rom's Forum , no one seemed to had the same problem, and that is why i am posting this here.
if any one can help i will be grateful.
thanks in advance
shlomo
p.s.
for now i went back to a Nand backup of my old rom...
hi there.
i manged to fix the first problem by flashing the rom with a different kernel - Dorimanx...
but now i have a different problem
everytime that i turn the phone on i get the messege "upgrading android"
and there are times that the phone turnes off for no reason (mainly when i get incoming calls)
and after that when i turn it back on again the battary is almost dead - today it happened when i had 70% and when i turned in back on the battary went down to 4%!!!
what can i do???
1.Wipe data/factory reset
2.Format /system
3.Flash the ROM (choose whatever Kernel in aroma)
4.Wipe cache
5.Wipe dalvik
6.Restart
Try that.
edit: oh and if the battery problem persists, calibrate your battery (there are plently of guides out there i'm sure you can find)
Thankx for the help, ill try that (again). Just a few questions.
Do you recommend a specific kernel (if j usr siyah i seem to get a bootloop)
What guide do you recommend to calibrate the battary, there are allot of them out there that i dont kbow which to use
Thanks again.

u can use Dorimanx v7.22 kernel ma8
also battery callibration apps will not aid u in any way on ur SGS2, since it comes with seperate Fuel gauge chip
u can use the 'Stweaks' app that comes with the Dorimanx kernel and do a 'Reset Fuel gauge chip' in it to have a better reading with ur battery

You can reset the fuel gauge chip, and if it doesnt work you can try the following: charge the battery to 100%, leave it on the charger. Go to recovery, wipe battery stats under advanced. Reboot, unplug from charger.
Hope it helps.
Edit: I think I read somewhere that its recommended to leave the battery to fully discharge after wiping bat stats (let the phone turn itself off) and then recharge again.

well... tried Rootbox and i gotta say its a nice rom.
bot not more then that... the paranoid android settings are all wonky there and i still get many bootloops - even you can work around them by turning on and off...
going to try P.A.C Rom
any advice would be appreciated
Edit: well, tried P. A. C Rom, worked well to start with. But then again it started a bootloop for no reason... For now went back to a nand backup of jellybam from 16/11 that seems to be the most stable. Why does this keep happening???
To anyone getting battery drain issues with custom ROM like had. Would like to share a method that helped me get my battery stable. First wipe cache partition followed by wipe dalvic, then factory reset. Now go to mounts and storage and select system format after this step flash ROM and Gapps as usual. After this I wipe cache partition and dalvic one more time and reboot. I knw it seem like a lot to do but it has work for me I now get 10+ hrs of battery life. Just remember to use titanium backup or Go Backup app otherwise be ready to reinstall apps and layout settings all over again. Hope this help and if any questions Pm me an I will do what I can to help.

but they have been told time and time again, if you dont fully wipe before flashing, then dont report anything....its simple.
you posted instructions on flashing a rom, the same as any ROM OP should.
BTW, wiping cache and dalvik is placebo. when you boot after changing system, the dalvik cache gets rebuilt....doesnt matter if you wipe it or not. what can matter is /data partition if you have rogue app or rogue settings that are incompatible with the version of the rom you are upgrading to.
this thread is just a common sense thread:
if you have problems fully wipe then flash again.....
even says so in the AOKP OP......
Totally agree but still you and I know that reading through AOKP page the question comes up and at least with this they will avoid asking the question on thread page. Please PM for further comments.

I tried CM a while back (WAY back, actually - pre-ICS) for the i717. It wasn't bad but after a while I went back to stock because for me it just 'felt' better. Hard to explain it other than that. In any case, I've been on full stock ever since and was happy with it.
Then Official JB comes out from the carrier and my phone is laggy as all hell and it's gotten to the point of royally pissing me off to the point that I'm considering my options.
My question is this: Do we know the cause of the lag? If so, is it fixable via custom kernel or something similar, or do I need to go to a whole separate ROM to get away from the problem (and are there any in particular that are recommended if that is the case)?

I don't recall, but if I had to venture a guess I'd say probably not. I followed the above thread to the 'slow 4.1.2' and disabled everything I could on that list and did a restart, not sure which one did the trick but now it's nice and speedy.Hoping it stays this quick and isn't just a factor of not a lot built up in memory yet. I'll try a factory reset if it bogs down again.
there could also be some existing apps that continue to run in the background.
you might either go into app manager and force close them and clear their cache individually
OR
maybe reboot phone every day or two. clearing any cache build up. kind of a preventative maintinence thing.
if you ventured new ROM, may I suggest Padawawn.
every phone is a bit different, but I have had the best results ever
4.2.2 ROMs perform better IMO. Good luck
™
i prefer stock as well and was also experiencing lag until i found the right setup for myphone. started out by debloating. then flashed phasekernel_jb.3 and use setcpu or whatever tuner app you prefer and set governor = fantasy/scheduler = sio/min = 384/max = 1728. all phones are different so you may need to try different settings to find what works for yours. i have not had any lag since.
Here is what worked for me. I had the same issue as you and posted it a while back. This also greatly increased my battery life. I suggest that if you are rooted go ahead and wipe the device - in fact do it twice! You will have to reinstall of you your apps but it got rid of all the lag and almost doubled my battery life.
