[Q] Would a new kernel resolve radio issues? - HTC Droid DNA

I'm on Verizon. I tried installing both the GPE rom and cyanogenmod 10.2. When I do, I immediately encounter cellular issues. I'll lose cellular data often and require a recycle of mobile data. It was definitely worse on cm but I'm wondering if my issues stem more at the kernel level? Maybe the VZ stock kennel isn't compatible with these Roms? If so, is there a kernel you recommend?

those Roms that u mention here came already with working recommended kernels, however for GPE you can try : Beastmode_Viverrine_RELOADED_3.0. here http://www.nosroms.com/?developer=DNA&folder=Kernel
if you have an Old Radio here is the new http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236633

Looks like I already have the latest radio, so that's good. My question in regards to the kernel is, does it affect radio? So, before I switch kernels, just wanted to check if I'm going down the right path. Thanks a lot

Ok simple nope. a least something is wrong with the kernel, kernel have more to do with battery performance, display, smoothness scrolling and wifi to my understanding.
radios signal = to have the correct driver for the modem Ril (Radio Interface Layer)

[Q] Can the kernel affect the performance of the modem?

Hello,
I have a SGS2 running CheckROM 3.1.1 (http://checkrom.com/threads/checkrom-revolutionhd-v3-1-1-xwkj3-rock-stable.208/) and trying the SiyahKernel 2.2p (http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/2011/11/29/siyahkernel-v2-2p/).
Since a few days... I think it started when I've installed the SiyahKernel from 2.1.1 to 2.2i and then 2.2p... I notice the modem (the Internet connection via my Carrier) goes slower or drops more often.
Also, sometimes, when I reboot the phone, I don't get Internet service or I get service for a few minutes and then drops.
I attach a screencapture of what I have when the connection drops.
So my question is: Could the Kernel affect the MODEM?
Strange? Help?
Not really unless there is something wrong with the kernel .
jje
Considering that SiyahKernel is one of the most popular Kernel...
There is not something wrong in the Kernel.
The problem is my Carrier.

Jajaja!
But popular means that is tested. Is more tested than what I can test
Generally, the kernel has more interaction and direct effect on WiFi than it does the radio.

So... You are saying that could be a relationship? Small, but something?
It's more than likely the kernel. The modem type you use has a negligible effect on battery life.

Just as JJ mentioned above, not unless there's something wrong with the kernel. The thing to remember when flashing a new kernel is to clear out all the old junk from the previous kernel first.
There's script here to do it, which is a good idea to flash via cwm recovery first.
At the very least, you should manually clear cache and Dalvik.
Is this the mentioned script?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13224453

[Q] Reception / antenna problems (GetRIL)

hello fellow xdas
while back i had gotten my hands dirty with the CM10 project as i just couldn't wait for the official update! i learned quickly that i had serious problems with antenna/reception. i tried carious base bands (as recommended on forums) using GetRil/flash.Odin. this didnt seem to help, even though i would get better reception, my signal was unstable. In the process i tried other roms like JellyBam and had the same issue.
As this is my main phone and i do actually need to call with it, i went back to the stock rom i downloaded. but surprisingly i still have the same issue! GetRil also shows that i have incompatible RIL/baseband. this is what it shows:
RIL: I9100NELP2; I9100XXKI4
Baseband: I9100XXLPQ
FYI: i am located in the Netherlands and use T-mobile network.
so have i installed the wrong ROM or done something wrong in the process... ? does anyone have any experience with this? i much rather have CM10 but only if i can get to call normally once again?
thanks

Use either of the 2 links below to download either the NELP2 modem of the XXKI4 modem, and them flash them onto your phone via Recovery Mode. That should resolved your incompatible RIL issue.

thanks a lot zee54,
can i just go back to my CM10 or JellyBam, install the above mentioned radios and get everything working? or does it depend on the RIL which that ROM is running! I have tried a number of modems when i had CM10, but dont know if i tried those... i did try BVLP7 for sure
Based on this forum right here i need to have the I9100BOLPD ROM as stock for Netherlands T Mobile!

The modem is independent of the ROM, mate. So it wont make much of a difference whether you install the radio on stock firmware or on CM10. You could try using the modems mentioned by zee54 with CM10 and seeing if it helps. Also, give it about a day or so..since the phone tends to take a while to get 'used' to a new modem.

The unstable signal or "RIL Crash" as it it called isn't actually caused by having an incompatible RIL and Baseband (modem). It is a more complicated issue which I don't fully understand myself. But what I do know is that it currently affects all customs roms that are based on CM10 and use the CM Kernel. So switching modems might help recude the frequency of the problem but probably won't irradicate it completely.
You should not experiencing this problem if you go back to stock samsung firmware. If you experience problems you might want to do a full wipe (Data, Cache, Dalvic-cache) before reflashing and fix permissions afterwards.
On a more positive note, I have found that using the Siyah Kernel with your custom rom does seem to eliminate this problem, or at least reduce it occurance to such that I have not noticed it happening.
So personally i would suggest that if you wish to go back to CM10 or JellyBam ROMs, then do so but also install the latest Siyah Kernel for the S2 from here http://www.gokhanmoral.com/
(Here's the XDA Thread for the Siyah Kernel - [KERNEL] SiyahKernel v4.1.5 (v5.0a2))
I am currently running CM10 with the Siyah Kernel v5.0b2 and it is working very nicely
great stuff guys... 2x thanks for both of you!
Zeey54, i just had Siyah v5 Kernal installed, installing the latest JellyBam right now! so lets see what happens. i was suspecting that beside the RIL/baseband there were other factors as i did not see any significant difference between them. but then again i dont trust my judgement on such issues as my knowledge is quite limited.
will send an update with the result after installation in a few min.

installed the BOLP7 modem, overall reception is much better! data connectivity is also better and faster. but i still have some periods which my receptions drops and goes back up, seems like radio/modem crash (if im right). dont know if that is due to the kernel or modem or ...?
the reason i went for BOLP7 modem was because the latest official stock rom from t-mobile Netherlands was I9100BOLPM_I9100TNLLP8_I9100BOLP7, so i thought that would be the best one to try!
will wait a little more to see if this improves as the modem settles.
4th official ROM too much coverage you please make a review ?
need modem
First of all, thank you mate for your hardwork and awesome utility.
I have a Samsung galaxy S2 I9100G , recently flashed jelly bam custom rom. I am based in Saudi Arabia, the reception is not clear and people complain that it is switched off or out of network. I tried calling with another mobile and i got a response that my mobile is switched off, at the same time i checked my S2 mobile , it shows the full signal of the network in status bar.
what should i do? Which modem should i flash. the getRIL shows RIL/baseband is matching (I9100GDDLP5).
cheers

Hi, just bought an og ,coming from HTC phone. There r some new things it looks like. What is a EFS ? Back up EFS partition ? I'm gonna used the my att og on straight talk , any things I should watch out for ? Should stay 100 % stock until service is activated? I'm looking for a near stock stable optimized rom, any to recommend ? Which kernel is good for it ? Htcs have hboot , it looks like lgs use different things , how do I go around flashing radios ? Excuse me for throwing out tons of noob questions , gonna start somewhere
0 help lol
Welcome. There is a zip file that you put on your external SD card somewhere in the optimus g forums that will backup your efs partition.
Edit: I found it for you if you haven't had any luck finding it. Also.. The efs supposedly holds your imei number and stuff.

MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM is the newest and may have the best chance of being actively maintained in the future. He also builds his own kernel with tweaks.
Ic, what version android is MysteryEmotion's eg8 ROM ? Has anyone tried houstonn's Stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean LG-E970 At&t ? I don't need the latest version android or anything , mostly seeking for stability and everything work.

Mystery's eg8 is based on 20j 4.1.2 stock with addons and enhancements. I think Houstonn's is a port from another OG that was released with jellybean before AT&T got the update.
Can you please clarify a bit? Do you mean stock LG or stock Google/Android.
Stock LG: Either go with MysteryEmotion's eg8 Or SnowJBLeaopard's SnowJB -almost forgot SlickRom, that is super debloated, but not really to my liking. (forgot who posted it)
Stock Google/Android: Either Shelnutt's Unofficial 10.1 Or houstonn's Vanilla Rootbox. The latter has a lot of "bells and whistles" while the former is basically stock. Also should mention TuxAttack's Beanstalk. Also a lot of bells and whistles though.

Personally I would go with dvhexers CM 10.1.2, and his included kernel is quite good. This is stock android/CM though, with a bit of searching and patience you can run LG Home on top of this, with the original weather/clock and calendar.
i.e.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198225
So then you have the best of both. Too many options for you not to get out there any try a few. But @dvhexers CM10.1 I think was perfectly stable.
I am using the JellyBean ROM. I have been on it for about a month now and haven't had any issues that wasn't caused by me
Though, other than that I suggest mysteryemotionz
okay, I'll probably go with ME eg8 and his V6.1 kernel for 4.1.2. just being on the safe side , should i flash a JB radio for this rom ? if yes, do i flash in RECOVERY ? i have found a radio called CWM-ATTJB-Radio, is this the right one ? I am being carefully about this because my HTC flash radios in Hboot with PG86IMG files... as far as flashing kernel, do u guys recommend flashing with Flash Image GUI for this phone ? and is wiping Dalvik always needed for flashing kernels for this phone ? i thanked everyone that helped.

Sorry, for some reason I called the ROM 'Beanstalk' Jellybean.
It was ported from the infuse 4G. I have tried just about every ROM and this one is my favorite.
Maybe it is just me, but again I haven't had any real issue with it. I did have a kernel crash from MysteryEmotionz kernel though. I then flashed Smoochas and all is good.
The crash occurred whenever I tried to run a QR code app. (any QR code app)

ME's eg8 is modified stock, it should come with his kernel already. Yes the radio's flash in CWM as zips, you can manually push with ADB/Fastboot commands, but why bother.
What are you referring to by "Flash image GUI" ? If you mean "clockwork mod recovery" or "TWRP" then yes. Once you download the freegee app from the market, it will give you the option for either, choose which ever you like more, personally I prefer CWM. Yes always wipe dalvik cache after you flash a kernel, so it can recreate the DEX files for that particular kernels methods of execution.

Flash image GUI is an image flashing app from the market. MiRaGe, known for his rom and kernel works for Optimus V and HTC Evo V 4G, recommends flashing his kernels with this app. I have been using it to flash kernels. So i was just wondering if this would work with kernels for this phone , i guess every phone is different.

I'm not familiar with those apps, and don't recall seeing them mentioned here at all. FWIW, I personally avoid any apps that flash things. They may make things convenient, but I've seen too many issues caused on too many devices by apps that flash stuff.
Just read the relevant threads to learn about what you are doing, and flash manually from recovery. That way, you're in control of what you're doing. Less chance of snafus caused by incompatibilities...
i am in complete stock . rg8 is 700 mb ?.... most roms i use for my HTC are around 150..
Thanks everyone for all the help. Now I'm running eg8 , everything seems fine execept the first time I took a picture had a very strange crash. The screen went blank and codes started rolling up the screen , it went on for about 3 minutes then phone restarted itself ...

[Q] Question about the ME7 Baseband

Hi all,
Before I get yelled at, the search feature isnt working currently on XDA, so my apologies for something that has probably been asked multiple times.
I'm looking for 'that' ROM, you know, a daily driver, and I haven't come across one that I like just yet. Some of this has to do with my signal strength (I know TW will always have a better signal than AOSP). I'm still on the MDK baseband version. My first question is will an upgrade to ME7 make a noticeable difference? If yes, where and how do I go about flashing it? On my S3 I was able to just flash a zip with the new radios, but I understand now ODIN is necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

What rom are you on now? The reason I'm asking is because if your on stock you might as well flash something like Darkslide which is stock minus some bloat and includes the ME7 baseband. ME7 is in my opinion better but nothing drastic.

He updated that in release 6 so just flashing the rom will update your baseband. Picture in picture and smart scroll will not work on the stock kernel....if you use them you will need to flash a kernel that supports it.

Need to switch to jelly bean

Hey guys! I'm using a Galaxy Note with a Bell board (was originally AT&T but that bricked because at the time I thought flashing an N7000 ROM would work, D'oh!) and I want to upgrade to a Jelly Bean Rom. I'm using Blackstar XI, a 4.0.4 ROM, and I'm looking for a lightweight JB rom. It can lack stylus/pen support, I found myself not using that feature as much as I thought I would.
Would I run into any issues using a QuincyATT Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 ROM, considering it's a Bell note board? Would I need to unlock my SIM first? And I recall there being a trick with Notepad++ I needed to do in order to make it work, even on my AT&T board.
I just have an issue with heavy RAM usage at boot and I can't even run some apps, since I know touchwiz is stupid.
Anyone willing to help me get it running on my note? Any help would be appreciated!

If you like blackstar, I would just flash Blackstar Blackjelly after doing a backup. It's what I've been running as my go-to on my Telus note. The other jb's are great too, but cm comes with the odd small bug like echo on speaker phone. Most of the customizations make them worth trying though.

Sweet. I could give that a try if the Cyanogenmod ROM doesn't work. Is there anything I need to do in preparation, since this is technically a Bell note? Or can I just go ahead and flash the ROM without any changes to the ZIP?

I'm assuming you have an unlocked bootloader already since you are running cm. Just be sure to have latest cm recovery or gimmeitorilltell's twrp (although other versions work with Jellybean, if you try kitkat or lollipop you'll have problems). Make sure you are flashing a quincyatt rom.
I have been using SGH-I717ATT-UCMD3-Modem with great success for a radio. Your mileage may vary.
If you get no signal, before blaming the rom, first check your mobile networks access point names and settings to be sure they match your carrier. (A good idea is to take a couple screenshots of your settings now before you flash any new roms as there are quite a few numbers involved)

Good news! I tried the CM10.1.3 ROM and it worked well minus two small gripes:
1. Occasional freeze/hang on lock screen, causing it to reboot
2. Random artifacting/crashes during video playback/browsing through gallery
I'm gonna say this is the best performing ROM I've tried so far, but I'm going to give BlackJelly a try! I'll keep you posted. Just figured I'd give Cyanogenmod a proper shot now that I know how to install ROMs!

Time for BlackJelly! Downloading now.
I also may need some help getting the SIM to work once this ROM is on. So that way, I can use this stock-rom based OS for actual phone things instead of it just being a tiny tablet! Yay!
Can you point me in the direction of the latest TWRP recovery that I can flash through Odin?
