So, presumably, we would from the Mega to the Note 4 in a year or so??
(I know that this is all speculation and a lot will change in a year)

If samsung makes it with a little better specs and maybe an anoled screen I cannot see why they shouldn't make a mega 2 as they had good success with this mega..but this mega is awesome already and it can only improve if a mega 2 does happen to come out. ..but only time will tell.

Agreed. Look at the activity on this forum. Doesn't seem to be a lot of us.
This phone will never get the respect it deserves because of the mid-range specs. People will never know until they actually play with one :/

Exactly. Probably the first smartphone which disproves how specs on paper can be misleading and not tell the whole story about actual, discernable performance.
My Mega is just as snappy as my former S4.
Sadly, we may or may not ever see another here in the US. However, I'm sure that in a year or so, we will be talking about flexible displays anyway so...

I think there would likely be a mega 2. Samsung has to keep producing not only high end but also midrange phones to remain competitive.

I hope so, but then we also have to hope that it comes again to AT&T. I'm just afraid that AT&T may not be selling enough of them to warrant a second one in their lineup.
Again, this is just speculative paranoia, but you never know and we know how much is going to change in a year or more.

Lets remember whilst we know the specs and what they me average joe doesent know the diff between snapdragon this or exynos that. 8t wont sell well compared to the others purely because its too big for the majority of users most people have called it a tablet when they seen it. So anyone walking into the shop and see this next to normal phones they will probably stray away from it. Unlike peeps like us who do believe bigger is better
Sent from my GT-I9205 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
i think yes, we will see but not better than what we have already now. Samsung released this mega in rush without big announcement before, it was in exact time when Huawei released their ascend mate. also the development for this device i don't think it will run good since Samsung don't want that.
Samsung releasing some hybrid devices only to exam the market from our pockets and to say we are here then they kill these devices and kill the people who screwed and owned them. exactly as same what happened for Galaxy tab 7.7 which did not repeated and did not get any update or custom roms for more than a year.
Their loss, my gain. Maybe I should buy 2 for when this one dies. Although that doesn't look like any time soon AT ALL. lol

VERY true, up here in BC, Canada, I have only seen one person throughout my university campus with a Mega, everyone else is rocking a stupid iphone (dont understand the sillyness of one), I've seen only a handful of windows phones, and 2 Bberry's
Still saving up my pennies so I can get a Mega, the bad thing is the limited dual-core inside of it. It isn't BAD but a quad-core would make the phone way better. I love large phones.

Headed out on vacation for the next week, so had to make a decision before my 30 day window was up.
Basically, I went with a larger screen for media related reasons (video, images etc), and the black-crush issue became a deal breaker for now. I think I'll sit on my crappy old iphone 3g for another month or so and revisit the Note or perhaps the the HTC onex. Hopefully the note will see ICS before too long and it'll fix some of the graphics issue i've been noticing.
That being said, I've got a couple cases that I will no longer need, they can be viewed in my review post of them in the review section. If you'd like them let me know...i'd accept cost of shipping plus beer money

I thought the same thing when I saw this. That would be a trend I'd never support. Batteries get weaker with time and it would be very inconvenient to send it off to be replaced. I hope this is just a rumor.

OP & XDA Members:
I don't know if you'd even consider an unsubsidized device. But if you would, the international Note (GT-N7000) is a big improvement over the AT&T Note. This is an educated personal testimony, as I have owned both devices. As for battery issues (and this applies to both the N7000 & the I717), 99% of the issues I've encountered have been caused by software. Google Maps, certain kernels, and certain root-enabled apps can cause perpetual, long-lasting wakelocks when the device should be in deep sleep. This seriously impacts battery life. However, once these issues are addressed, the Note finds it's battery life on par with the iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S.
I'm not trying to get into an Exynos versus Snapdragon debate. I'm simply making observations about the two devices' respective benchmark results, and their real-world everyday performance. Whether these differences are a result of the change in SoC, or something else entirely, is a discussion best had in another thread. For the purposes of this thread though, the international Note would serve you much better, and offers a much larger development community (for the moment; anything can change).
As far as the One X is concerned, it's another prime example of AT&T neutering a device to ensure LTE compatibility. If you think this is an acceptable trade-off because the altered device allows you to connect to AT&T's LTE network, consider this. AT&T doesn't care if you get 40Mbps or 1Mbps downstream. Their goal is to get devices off of their congested HSPA(+) network and onto their LTE network. In the process, they can tout it as a major upgrade designed to give YOU better service. The truth is that this "upgrade" wasn't a decision made to compete with big red; it was a necessary move to relieve the stress on their HSPA(+) network before it collapsed.
So, next time you go shopping for a phone to use with good ole' Ma Bell, consider what the device can do for YOU... not them.
Thank you,
Ed

No one phone is perfect, I hace owned more than 20 phones In the past few years and every phone I have had all have had drawbacks. What would be the incentive for a carrier to put out a perfect device when they rely on the revenue from phone sales? And everyone is different so everyone has there on perception of what perfect is. Me I couldnt have an Iphone as my daily driver because for one the screen is too tiny and two the iphone makes simple things much harder like creating a ringtone. But what I like about the Iphone is the many apps it has that Andriod still doesnt like Family fued.

Good post. I own both and am keeping both. They have different strengths, one is updates and unlocked the other get access to the LTE network which is excellent in the area where I live. One other thing is you get 5GB on the LTE unlimited plan for $30 opposed to 3GB on the HSPA plan before throttling. I have not seen any battery issues on either.
I really like the looks and specs of the HTC One XL but no SD crd and the battery thing bother me. I think it is 16GB or it 32GB internal memory? I just do not get that...Just my .02 cents.

Really? Do you even own one? Maybe you just don't know how to use it. My note works just fine with Gingerbread. It will probably be better with ICS, but it's not a joke without it. Considering the fact that we'll have ICS within the next few months, it's hardly a deal breaker even if you somehow can't stand to use the phone without the newest version of Android.

I don't know i was kinda shock its like the shelf life of high end phones around 6 to 7 months then wham a new version. Now I did read that the slll will have only a duel core due to the quad doesn't play well with lte. Maybe that's why a duel core. Idk. One thing I've noticed is the phones are never complete to me. The one x has the quad core great camera but then no sd card. The note great but doesn't have the s4 chip. It's like all the phones have one major features lacking just so u may have to upgrade or move on to the next one.
What about a phone that has
Quad core
Sd card
2gb of ram
Super almoled screen
Lte
Lastest os
Thin
Great camera
Great processor
The ultimate phone all the best of the recent phones. Now that would be hot.

It won't be much longer and this phone will have been out for a year. My next Note will be an international one since LTE is not appealing to me. Bring it!
"Due to its incredible success Samsung has started to work on its predecessor the Galaxy Note 2."
Who writes these things? I doubt predecessor is the word they wanted to use.
Successor must have confused them
I don't buy it, the specs just don't add up. .2" bigger is quite bigger even though it doesn't seen so, only 1.5gb of ram whb the s3 has 2? The processor? Nah its a fake
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Of course it's fake. Samsung has never stated that they intend to make another Note. It is pure conjecture.
Look what happened when they dropped the screen size half an inch with the S3. All of a sudden it is cool to have a ginormous screen. Hopefully it won't dissuade them to keep it above five inches.
The S3 is getting an SPen (called a CPen) very soon as well. Maybe the next Note will be one of the five Nexus phones dropping this year.
Who knows. Hell the one true fact of technology is you can't really keep up. There will always be the next hotness around the bend. Wow I didn't relize the note had been out so long I guess cuz Att just got it in March/April but i guess it has been out longer internationally.

That's how it usually works. International first and then the Americas. I am surprised the S3 is being released this quickly in the U.S. to be honest. Maybe they are trying to soak up some of the 'would be' iPhone 5 buyers although it is probably more along the lines of supply and demand.

To many little things in this article don't add up fire me to believe any more than maybe the timing.
First, it's either written by someone whose native tongue is not English or something... And why would the SG3 get quad core and the revised note be dual core? Just because if the lte thing? Makes no sense.
And why would they repeat the crap about over 300 dpi again as they do.
The while thing: Smells funny to this kid and when it smells like poop, it usually is.

I recommend you stay with the Photon and not get a new one. My reasons are selfish though, because I don't want you to leave us as a dev!
Honestly though, my girlfriend has the S3 and it's amazing. I don't like how fragile it feels in comparison to the Photon, but I watched her drop it on concrete yesterday and it surprised me. It landed in the top left corner and the screen didn't shatter. It just has a couple dings and scrapes on the sides.

IMO, get the S3:
1- As far as I know is the fastest phone out there
2- Samsung has added some nice software features
3- It's about to get official JB
4- The development community is growing up day by day
5- You will support Samsung in some way after the crappy outcome of the Samsung vs Apple trial D:
Thanks for all your work spleef..we've really enjoyed having you as one of our amazing devs!

the note 2 will face the same changes the sgs3 did, there is no current quad core chipsets that support LTE, the newest and greatest one to do so is the MSM8960 aka the qualcomm snapdragon S4 tahts inside the one x lineup, sgs3 lineup, and many many other phones this year
Come to the light.

Samsung's radios are garbage. I had the Epic, have since given it to my ex-wife, and after a year, the single sucked, on all fronts. the cell signal sucked, the wifi signal sucked, and even the bluetooth was flakey. The Photon (and I got mine used, so it's probably a year old now) is 10 times better in those respects. The only thing the Sammy has that bests Moto is the Super AMOLED screen.
Hey XDA I have a note and my mother is willing to trade me for her S3. Would you consider it an upgrade? I would miss the spen but I really think the big phone is not for me. It a hassle to Carry around especially with the extended battery. Could someone give me some advice on if its worth it. Thanks in advance.

I actually think that once the upgrades come to the s3 that it have the same functions as the note 2 other than the s pen.
Sent from my i777 using xda premium
I have both and the s3 is better, I won't lie.
Much smoother, the cpu/gpu is a big upgrade.
I would do it. I go back and forth between the two, but imo the s3 is the superior of the two.
Now the note 2 on the other hand....

I'm using a rom now with multi-window and stuff on it, it is fantastic.
Not to mention I get much better battery life than on my note
Note2 > S3 > note at this point in time. S4 is right around the corner which means the note3 isn't too far off either. Right now isn't really a good time to upgrade

If we're to believe Samsung Display, the display arm of Samsung, which is actually a desperate company, there might not be a Note 3 as we know it. They're replacing both the Note 2 display, as well as the S3 display with a 1920x1080 4.99 inch panel this year. This according to Anandtech. I suppose we could see a curved OLED touting Note, but then again, flexible OLED yield isn't supposed to be good enough for production runs til 2014.
Unless they're keeping the display a secret, this is what most would expect. This doesn't mean that they'll have some other type of offering or combination to allow SPen functionality on say....the S4, but I wouldn't personally design a new chassis around an S4 and call it a Note.
I'd definitely choose the S3 at this point. The Development support will last significantly longer than it will for this device. Isn't it the most popular Android device ever? That is to say, more users often means more ROMs, the pressure to update and develop for it will be higher.
Since were not talking about an upgrade, its a no brainer.
But if you had to use an upgrade, or pay more than say....50-100 bucks (personal figure) I definitely wouldn't do it. A new generation of SoCs is just around the corner. Just as well, the GPU is much more powerful on the S3, but app support and UI/general performance isn't too much better now that we have 4.2 AOSP. And while an official JB is probably a couple months out, but it will bring most Note2 features home for us.
That's the current sitrep for both devices.

At this point, trade for the S3, as the XDA Note community is shrinking...

Personally I love my note and it's plenty fast with the stable roms out there. My gf has a S3 and it's a nice device and I can really see the appeal but it really depends on WHAT you plan on doing with it. I remote into computers and my home network. Work on servers all from my phone so moving to a smaller screen isn't what I'd do. It has the horsepower to show up plenty of phones and though it's a gen old with older hardware, I kept my 86 toyota camry longer than I've had this phone and THAT was a piece of crap.
But again it's all about needs and wants. If you feel that you need the faster phone and are willing to loose the screen size, I say go for it.

Agreed, with new phone announcements coming up soon it doesn't make sense to upgrade for any form of currency, but in a straight trade, it might be worth it.

True, but I'd hazard to guess that's more due to the devs waiting for official JB to be released. But as my gf likes to remind me, I'm often wrong

I find the ui performance much smoother on the s3. ridiculously so actually.
the 4.2 roms do help the note but it still isn't in the same ballpark as the s3
actually the note 2 non international is fast enough, after you apply the Lag-remover app, posted this month. The Note flies after!

the fluidity of the s3 blows the note out of the water...
so so smooth.
I can upgrade my note in a heartbeat ..the xperia z looks great
although should I wait for development to boom or jump ship? I'm running PA 2.7

I doubt we are even going to see official jb tbh. I have mine up for sale atm
My upgrade isn't until March 2014. May likely get the Galaxy Note 3 or the S5. Hopefully they have the 1080p resolution and the octa8 core processor. Also key lime pie. Then again other manufacturer's are starting to build better high end devices. Kind wanna see what they have in store for us in the future. For now the Galaxy Note is still an awesome device in my eyes.

The only reason I have so much faith in development is because when I gave away my captivate I regretted it because it has insane roms! The developers in this forum are solid too..
if they made a 4.5 to 4.7 inch 1080p phone that's fast as hell id jump ship
5inches is good..but for a year now rt I've realized I like the size of the gs3 or smaller way better

The gs3 is just a much better phone in general imo....
The i717 performs horribly in comparison.
I have both and the gs3 is my daily, the i717 tends to just sit in a box until someone will hopefully buy it. I put jellybean on it, played with it for a little bit but even still it was never as smooth or as battery friendly as the s3, not even on the same level.

I'm having a hell of a time selling mine for $300. I got an offer for $225 and might just take it to get rid of it

Honestly when I got mine almost a year ago for 50 bucks though AT&T I'd take that offer. The price just dropped on the note one also. But AT&T just offered to take $100 off the upgrade price of the note two so, I honestly might take it. Told them I'd get back with them about it... Can't make up my mind!!! Ugh =(

You've got to be kidding. Development is booming. We're kicking 4.2.2 when a lot devices don't have 4.1 yet.
And the best ROM going for the GNote, we're not even allowed to talk about.

Oooooooh snap, you talked about it! Shhhhh!!! I agree with your statement though. It just takes a small amount of time especially with this device. Well mine I know (i717) but people just want the new and to flash flash flash. I'd rather the ROMs be tested toughly than have it bricked or something.

The roms work perfectly smooth I it wasn't for the reboots..which I don't even understand on a software level how they can even be fixed?
our developers rock though

Well what ROM are you on Ray? I haven't had one reboot or crash since 10.1 was introduced. Just takes a lil extra work with the right apps to make everything like buttah Lol. PM me with your details and I'll suggest the best way and setup for you if you don't mind.
