Hello everyone!
My device is facing strange problem, I know it is normal behavior among smart devices to get hot by intense CPU load. But it normally happens when CPU usage is intense like graphic intense gaming and constant browsing/downloading.
I am using 2G/EDGE Telenor Network in Pakistan and even chatting with friends on different apps causing this problem after using the mobile more than 5 minutes it starts getting pretty hot and battery drain too very fast ( same as using graphic intense games for 5 minutes). On the other hand, when I use the same apps on wifi network mobile don't get hot that quick.
I have even changed different firmwares available to our region. But my problem is not getting solved. Can someone please tell me what can be causing this strange problem?
PS: Sorry for the bad English, I hope everyone understood my point. If not you can ask questions

Have you rooted and changed the governor? I know this is probably not the issue but I can relate somehow. My phone got very hot very quickly while on pegasusq for some reason. If not, I cant think why it would get hot. 2g/edge is supposed to be less cpu intensive than the alternatives.
Are you sure its the cpu? have you tested it by taking out the battery when the phone gets hot, and feeling if the battery is? if its not the battery, the bottom part of the phone will feel hot, then it is the cpu.

I don't think that battery is faulty. The phone gets hot only when I am on EDGE data connection. Other than that, the phone battery is doing pretty good when I am using wifi and it will go for more than a day or so.

No, I am not rooted, using pure stock firmware (I9300XXEMF6) and obviously using stock kernel. Yes, I am pretty sure its CPU because phone gets hot from bottom part (front and back) got hot when this happens. And if I constantly use EDGE for like half hour, the phone gets super hot then I have to put down the phone and lock the screen for 5 minutes then it starts doing well.
The problem only happens when data transfer is being in process when modem is receiving and sending signals. If I just enabled the EDGE data connection and don't use Internet then the phone don't get hot.
It looks more of a network problem, I have read the blog post about fast dormancy. I think this network problem has something to do with fast dormancy.

Thanks but with all due respect, I am not new to smart devices and my previous phones didn't get hot on EDGE connection that quick (in like 5 minutes) on same area and same geographic region. I am facing this problem specifically on S3. Network sim signals are also doing fine (full signals). Now, I have left with only this option to disable the fast dormancy. Please read this post for knowing more about fast dormancy: http://www.androidnz.net/2012/06/at-your-own-risk-how-to-disable-fast.html

Hi guys!
Just got my SII yesterday. After couple of hours use I admit that the phone becomes hot even on normal usage, like downloading apps etc. The back of the screen as well as the screen itself slowly becomes hot. If i continue to use the phone it gets worse! I'm really confused n kind of scared. I've a iphone 3gs which rarely became hot. So, can u guys please tell me if its normal with SII or its just my unit that's got some problem?
Oh, sorry if its a duplicate thread. I've seen in different websites people saying it become hot when playing games. In my case since I had my phone I didn't even install a game yet! What I did is installed couple of apps, widgets and I use mspot to sync my music(446MB) over internet.
Any suggestions and advices appreciated!
It's normal that it gets hot when you use it
You have to remember that it's a dual core 1.2 ghz proc... and Yes it's normal..
Thanks for the replies. What concerns me most is the screen becoming hot and that I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this. How about u?

a part of the issue is it is a 1 GHz CPU overclocked to 1.2 GHz, so whenever your activity demands 100% of CPU, it gets sped up to 1.2GHz and gets hotter than needed.
But yes, excessive heating is not a defect, the phone is just too thin and tightly packed to dissipate heat effectively.
Actually, i dont think it's normal
The processor sometime get stuck at 1.2GHz in my device
whenever ur phone get too hot, go and check SetCPU, if the phone dosent get below 1.2 when idle, then reboot
My guess it's a kernal thing
Not normal. Mine doesn't get hot even when gaming. It used to get hot before I updated the firmware. Now it does not.

how can it be normal when the battery doesn't get warm at all while top screen and camera lens is hot like hell, and yes i mean hot like hell. so far no firmware has fixed this problem.

I had the same issue, it dissapeared after I flashed to KE7
Thanks for the replies.
Well, it seems yesterday my phone was warming up even in normal usage but now after using the phone for over 4hrs(after full charge) and a lot of usage(videos: 60-75mins, downloading apps, music: 40-50mins, little web browsing & checking fb & mail and sync & wifi always on.....) temperature is around 30 deg celsius.
Next thing giving me trouble is the capacitive menu button which wasn't working at all since yesterday(back button was ok). Last night, sometimes it worked for a few seconds and dead again. I was thinking I should call O2 for a replacement, suddenly its working again today! Guess its a software problem.
Another thing I'm concerned about is the battery life. After charging it to 100% and after the above mentioned usage the battery level is bellow 40% after only 4hrs. Well, brightness was 0% most of the time which is ok for indoor use. Its quite funny that the phone doesn't seem to discharge faster when playing videos(at youtube & vevo) compared to browsing web. In the review & battery tests at gsmarena they mentioned battery life is very good and can last almost a day with heavy usage. What u guys r experiencing? Is it similar to mine or mine has got a faulty battery.
which firmware are you running?
I'm on O2 as u r. So I guess its the same one. If not, mine's build number is ....XWKE2, baseband: I9100XXKDJ
NB: I'm using the stock firmware, didn't root and didn't use any optimisation app like juicedefender. And display brightness is on 0%, always on wifi.
KE2 is a little buggy, you try updating to latest firmware build KE7, might solve your problem.
you can do it if you connect your phone to your pc and run kies, or reading in the dev section of the forums there is a sticky there that informs you how to upgrade firmwares.
Thanks for the reply.
I use mac and the kies mac is in beta and won't let me upgrade(option disabled). I've tried the windows version of kies(downloaded directly from samsung portal) via paralles desktop for mac(lets u use windows app in mac) but it say mine is the latest version(ke2).
And the capacitive menu button is dead again! Is it possible that this is just a software problem? Or should I contact O2 for a replacement? Its my 3rd day with the phone so I've to report ASAP if i need a replacement.
The battery also feels faulty to me. It turned from 100%-1% with only 8hr of usage as follows:
videos: ~75mins(mostly HD),
downloading several apps apps,
music: 50+mins,
little web browsing,
checking fb, rss feed & mail,
sync & wifi always on,
brightness most of the time at 0%,
fring chat: 50-60 mins
And it took 3hrs to completely charge it up. Is it normal for you guys? Or should I request for a replacement? Any suggestions appreciated!
i have debranded my phone from O2 and upgraded to KE7 from kies, but if you cant do it that way you can try upgrading thru odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
This thread has multiple firmware versions and instructions on how to flash your phone (please note, if you decide to flash your phone, you do so at your own risk, even thuo the risk is quite small).
As for battery usage, i have rooted my phone and frozen a lot of bloatware, if i leave the phone on standby with wifi off the battery drains lest than 1% each hour, with wifi on its about 2% each hour.
Also i find that when i play angry bird a lot i have to recharge after about 6-7 hours, when i watch videos my phone heats up a little, it heats up a lot if i watch videos while charging.
hope that helps you, if not talk to the ppl at O2 to see if you can get it swapped out, but i think if you can get your firmware upgraded your battery drain should reduce and the shouldn't heat up as much.
Thank u very much for the replies. It looks like battery draining is normal for all SGS II users. Its kinda funny that playing videos over internet eats less power that browsing web(27.19min of HD video playing at vevo over wifi drained only 5% of battery!).
So now everything seem ok except the capacitive touch keys which sometimes which doesn't work most of the time. I'm just scared to use custom roms as it might void my warranty. Well, I'll try the link u mentioned and see if the problem still exists.
Thanks again
Hi all,
My SGSII heat up alot while charging. (for exactly i charge when phone have only 8%). The heat is not normal. It's more heat than while playing game.
And also it got high temp while using wifi and internet browsing between these days. Do you guys face the same problem?
SGSII is really great . But it heat up alot while playing game and turn on wifi.
Mine is a bit warm in the battery area when I begin charging the phone. But I wouldn't call it "extremely hot".
Another case is when I browse the web (that has flash) it feels a bit warm near the camera area (should be the CPU). Have not played games though.
There has been a discussion going on about that. It seems that some apps (eg Robo Defense) are not properly coded for the dual core. In addition some members also hinted, that the kernel is not yet optimized to compensate for that. The whole discussion started after a guy has "fried" his SG2 (beyond repair) while playing a game and charging at the same time. The phone still worked on AC power but no longer and battery and was unable to charge battery.
My recommendation would be,
- not to play games to long to heat up the device to much before new firmware is out.
- ...or use cet CPU to downthrottle to 500-800 MHZ
If the device heats up while charging I would try rebooting it (to get rid of processes which may still are open) or preferably charging while switched off

Which firmware are you using? I was on KF2, and experienced the phone heating up while playing games.
Updated to KF3 (stock, using Kies) rooted and all was well again. Even with excessive gaming, constant wifi on etc the phone just gets mildly warm.
There's no need to underclock etc. The heating issues just went away with KF3. If that firmware is not yet available in your area on Kies, then just put a newer custom ROM (Darky/Lite'ning/Villian etc) and try it out.
I remember whatsapping with some friends and I noticed my pocket felt really really hot. I checked and saw Whatsapp crashed. Also my battery sucked up about 30%. The phone was too hot to touch. I instantly took out the battery too let it cool down.
I never had that since. I expect it's resolved too, because I have KG1 now.
my firmware is KF2. now i decided to upgrade to KG1. is it stable now? any recommend rom?
As long as it stays below 50°C it is perfectly NORMAL.
And besides there is NO heat up issues with this phone.
Regards.
Hello
My s2 heated up alot too
so much so that it melted my simcard whilst it was on charge
also got led burn marks,
sent it to samsung lets see what they do 4 me
I already upgraded to XXKG1 and still heat up alot while playing pottery game.
This is why from the factory apple underclock their cpu's.
Samsung got the crazy idea of overclocking an already power hungry cpu.
A phone that gets too hot to touch under normal use is not fit for purpose

Hello all,
Recently i bought Razr XT910 (1 month ago). Because of failure on power button on first handset, provider exchanged it with new handset, now everything is ok except..
On both handsets comes up overheating issue when i was using HSDPA/3G network data for internet surfing. In 20-30 minutes back side and front side (LCD) comes very hot. Application for battery temp shows in idle cca 27C after 30 minutes just web browsing comes up to and over 40C.
This never happen if i play games, watch videos. Also heating is not present if i access and browse over internet on WIFI connection. And i didnt root phone yet and i already done factory defaults.
Has anyone experienced the same problem? Any suggestions?
Specific of my phone:
651.73.30.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU

Try to use the phone at different places. Check the signal reception. Low reception means higher transmitting power needed. So, more power needed and makes the battery and transmitter circuit work harder.

Thanks for reply. I tried this at work where i have full signal HSDPA (antena is 100 meters away and signal is very good), and at home i have very good signal on 3G network. I am not sure that the signal strenght is reason for heating... What about Radio Version: U_03.1C.91P, what improvements does it have?
I am on Asia GSM , HSDPA with 85P baseband. Everyday I download several podcasts from twit.tv and it is getting warm, but it cools back to normal after the download is finished.

Normally you see high temps with heavy 4G LTE/CDMA phones. Haven't heard of many GSM phones on any brand ever overheating. May want to return it again. Sounds faulty to me, and the hotter you run, the worse your battery life will be.
@got556
I read about phones 4G LTE/CDMA with high temps, but as far as i know my phone is 3G (gsmarena). Mybe it is faulty, but this is second one with same issue.
@bahathir
can you mesure and post here battery temp while dowloanding or surfing internet for 30 minutes? Mine also cool down when surfing is finished, but meanwhile...it worries me.
I will check background services for activity.
Started at CPU temp : 31.5 degree Celsius. I am using OS Monitor app.
Opened YouTube and watched one of the clips in TheAlexJonesChannel. At the end of 7 minutes clip, CPU temperature was 35 degrees Celsius.
Next 15 minutes clip, temperature was 37 degree Celsius.
Another 15 minutes clip, the temperature was 38 degree Celsius.
Signal strength : -89 dBm. WCDMA only mode
Room temperature : 26 degree Celsius.
Now, it cools as nothing was happened.

I wouldn't call it was overheating since your case is normal. If you surf 30minutes nonstop over wcdma, any phone will get noticebly hotter but it wouldn't like you can't touch it.

What he said. An active mobile data connection will produce a lot of heat, especially when using 3G. When on 4G, your phone is using up a much smaller portion of the total available bandwidth so the radio doesn't have to work as hard, whereas over 3G your device and radio have to work much harder to maintain the necessary data rate.
This can be compounded by factors like ambient temperature, GPU accelerated applications (browser), the physical layout of the device's hardware, and even how you hold your phone while using it.
The good news is, 40°C is not a 'dangerous' temperature level for your battery. Given how high your ambient/idle temperatures are, you're really not generating that much more heat.
In general, I don't think you have to start worrying about Li-Ion batteries until they hit about 45-50°C (don't quote me on that), at which point you start running into issues like thermal runaway and damage to the battery.
Hope that helps.

Sorry, double post, but this is important:
Every Android device I've worked with will generate MUCH more heat when connected to AC power (there is a scientific term for this phenomenon, but the name escapes me). With rooted devices, I tend to account for this by creating an underclocked profile in SetCPU for when the device is plugged in.

Hi all.. My Razr XT910 touches 45° when I play games like angry birds or similar ones..is it considered normal?

Hi guys,
I am sorry for (very) late reply Recently i hit 44°C with active web browsing (facebook, news pages...) and i didnt watch any movies in about 20 minutes. The phone was really hot and it was very uncomfortable to hold it and touch it. In the meantime i contacted motorola support. After their advise i set phone to factory defaults and then i also exchange micro sim card (for free) just in caseif there is any problem with it. But problem is still present. So i decided to take phone to repair centre. They tested the phone for a few days and they said the phone is working normally. They also reflashed my current SW....On friday i got phone back and problem is still here...Now I wonder how they tested the phone and what is for them to normal operation. And i am also stuck at SW version. Does anyone know what are differences betwen GB,FR,DE, NonEFIGS and other versions? Is there just language difference or is also hardware diferences?
I am also worried what will happen in summer with high temperatures outside..
Well, I don't think is something unusual... Its same like your laptop - if the system is busy and the processor has lot of work, it gets simply hot..
Keep in mind that the razr has two cores and if you are playing games or watching movies or even browsing web containing some flash etc. it may get hot because the cores are running at 1,2ghz and it generates heat...
I don't think its something surprising and you will face it with every nowadays smartphone..
If the temperature don't get down after few minutes the phone is idle, check if there is some stuck process because it seems that most likely there is something running on background...
I personally use the System Tuner which gives me a great overview about the current phone's load etc...
@maarawoe
i undarstand what you are trying to say. But web browsing over WIFI does not generate that much heat, the phone gets a little warm not hot as on mobile data (aprox. 35-36°C) and also when playing angry birds or something dos not get that hot.
As i said i am just concerned what will happen on summer time.I hope that the phone will not explode
I will try that app to see more details what is happening with system.

WiFi hotspots are usually 100m away at most; but since the range from cell towers can be measured in kilometres/miles, the power needed to talk to them is much higher. Some of this power is lost as heat. All devices with HSPA and LTE radios get somewhat hotter when the data connection is used heavily.
Recently trouble shot this same problem for someone else. Try this:
1) Turn off Wi-Fi
2) Go into wireless settings and DELETE the saved profile for the Wi-Fi network you're using (make sure you know the network key first)
3) Turn on Wi-Fi, reconnect to the network.
High temperatures are common under certain conditions, such as being connected to AC power, using multiple radios simultaneously (ex: GPS + 4G), CPU/GPU intensive applications, and of course high ambient temperature.
45°C is not dangerously high, but can indicate other problems. Anything higher than 50°C and you may start experience issues like thermal runaway (battery rapidly discharges).

Hi, thanks for replies.
@JPtheSmith - high temperatures are present only browsing net over 3G (we dont have 4G..yet). Even if Wifi is turned off. If i use Wifi for web i dont get so high temperatures. And the ambient where i use my phone is around 20-25°C. Maybe there is some incompatibility between phone gsm module and provider network. I will try to get another provider sim and check it.
I had a long talk with Verizon tech support about high temperatures.
The main causes.
1. Bad signal area, makes the phone work harder.
2. Running to many apps. To many Background apps can and will over-tax your phone.
3. Last but not least, HD games will max out your phones resources.

Cell standby drain cannot be confirmed by all people and is related to the 3G setup, antennas and location of your provider.
Here the network show a very bad case of hopping when switching to/from IDLE (fast dormancy) which drains the battery in no time.
I'm currently running Juicedefender Ultimate beta with AOSP helper which switches to 2G when the screen is off and no data is transferred. Only issue is that you'll loose connectivity twice (3G->2G and 2G->3G) for a very short time but other than that it seems to work fine and has solved my battery drain problem.
I've been used to switch back to 2G as soon as I don't need 3G/HSPA with my S1 as it's drain is even worse, so it's no big change for me

i conquer on this.
i do use now 2x battery saver, which does the same thing as the juicedefender, but even before that, my battery is very well managed. I would assume that the fact of cell standby being on the top of the list when you havent been using the phone for anything else is logical to be there. That IS what will be draining the battery. I would only see the problem on those handsets that this drain is not within acceptable limits, ie, whatever people have measured as normal drain for these circomstances.
I use juicedefender and with the latest update the battery drain is less than 2% an hour, im happy with that
Ive always found by the the biggest drain in standby being data always being on
That's not totally correct. Data is not what is actually draining your battery (at least it never was for me).
It's 3G not being in IDLE due to sending/receiving data, fast dormancy not being (properly) supported by the network or the network provider having a badly configured/balanced network.
If you switch to 2G, you'll find that your phone can run 2 days with data enabled if not heavily used.
Big exception seems to be Exchange's ActiveSync which is, when an account is configured (whether enabled or not) always top-of-the-list in BetterBatteryStats. But well... Exchange sucks anyway =)
I should have typed 3g data, this single act of letting the 3g connection be managed by juicedefender doubled my battery life
Yeh i have no idea for the technical reason but managing the 3g connection makes a big difference to me
hmm i am not aware of the actual network causing problems with the drain issue during 3g/2g signal. I only knew that when the signal is bad in general or you get no signal at all, then the phone is wasting too much energy trying to log on to a network itself.
i have the 3g swap on my 2x battery saver to rotate every 5min when the screen is off. Its the smallest amount of time you can apply. However i dont know if im the average phone user, as i see here lots of people doing a lot more things with their handsets during a day.
Not so sure about the 3G data thing but I'm only using the phone on wifi with data disabled and I still got the battery drain.

Wifi is another issue, especially when you have the 5Ghz band enabled and your phone hops between both. Try checking if your Wifi's channel is crowded and configuring the router to another less crowded one.
Then force your phone to use either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz band depending on your setup; drain should've gone away.

I have noticed that after a few days of using, the back of the phone esp. the lower part tends to get warm/hot to the touch after using it for internet via Mobile Data. I haven't noticed this with games or watching videos. My phone is already rooted with CWM installed but I haven't played with the settings of the CPU.
Can you consider this normal? I came from Galaxy S II and the overheating issue was well documented while playing HD Games like those from Gameloft and other intensive activities on the phone., even if the unit is on ICS.
No. They must have sent you a miniature nuclear reactor instead!
Seriously, there are LOADS of threads on this.

I have the same problem, and the samsung rep i talked to about this told me to get a new battery, i will go get one tommorow, you should try the same.

I am experiencing the same behaviour, but only if I use the handset for extended periods. It isn't too hot to hold though by no means but I can understand the concerns about battery.
Looking at this though, http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/1#.T-AmIxeXSjP you can see that the Processor and all the other heat worthy chipsets are located in the lower portion of the handset.
Well that is completely normal in many cases. the lover part consist of the battery and most of the heating units. Mobile data consumes battery. try to play a big game like nova for 20 minutes and check if the heat is still there
I only experience this whenever I use data packet connection for internet. WiFi and other activities like playing HD Games and watching movies, the back portion is relatively cool if not just a little bit warm.
Here are the temps that Ive monitored:
1. WiFi: 29-32'C
2. HD Games: 29-31'C
3. Movies: 29-33'C
4. Data Packet Connection: 29-43'C. Please take note that if the Data Packet (Mobile Data) is on and I leave the phone unattended for almost an hour, the temp. reading slowly goes down to 30'C.
Would you consider these temperature readings normal?
I need expert advise from you guys.
Many thanks!

Hello.
I thinks it's normal...
But if you whant to compare, try that.
Download stability test app from google-play and run CPU/GPU test.
After 16 cpu passes it show me 42c.
Room temp is about 29c-30c
Also the phone is not in my hands τo avoid the temperature of my body and also without any case.
What's yours?
Thanks
I tried that app and tried that test. Mine passes and registered 41.5'C.
Is that ok?
But I think the primary culprit would be the modem, the one responsible for the 3G connection.
I dont think there are available modems flashable via CWM at the moment.

Hmm, maybe you're right.
Try to flash a diff modem from here and compare the result's.
As for flashing you can try MobileOdin. (I have the pro version)
I can't do that now cause i'm at work..
I change the modem as advise by ausdim. It improve my connectivity and I noticed that it went to a maximum of 41.3'C.
Just to be on the safe side, I placed it in room-temperature and put it o a flat surface, to be exact on my writing pad. After 30 minutes of browsing, most of the readings are from 38' and below.
Would you consider this to be a significant improvement?
Hrm, perhaps the US version will be a plus because of the lack of the overheating exynos. I'm ordering mine tomorrow from sprint
which modem did you use ?
Let it run the cpu+gpu test for 19 cpu passes and it was at 39.4°.

I am thinking not to buy yet an SGS3
my first galaxy s3 model got extremely hot towards the bottom of the phone and temps around 49 celecius...i exchanged it through expansys....then my replacement phones back casing had cracks, so i sent it back for another exchange from expansys but that one didn't get as nearly as hot as the first one...hope my third replacement will be ok...sigh...if not i might just go the att route...
My experience
The first two days I had my phone, I was playing with it non stop for about 4 hours and mine got really warm too [bottom 1/3 of phone]
I was playing NOVA 3 with all radios on, and possible a few apps running in the background. The battery lasted less than 3 hours.
I just figured that it would have to as these powerful high performance electronics devices do tend to heat up.
Now, two weeks in, I have not noticed it since, so for me I'd put it down to new phone syndrome.

I did that test with my undervolted One X, after 20 cpu passes: 39,6°C
A stock One X goes up to 48°C..
seems that the tegra 3 does not get noticably hotter than sgs3. nvidia just chose way too high voltages...
I came from XXALE8 then I flashed DDLE9

Accidently pressed thanks instead of quote, so thank me to press thanks... kidding
I had 3 HOXes before my SIII and they all became uncomfortable hot. Specially the ring around the camera was litterally burning hot, couldn't touch it.
But that was not the reason for returning it, they had other hardware faults.
