Hi...
It's been a week, I experience severe battery drain...
At the night I have 100 % battery, then in the morning it's dead because no power left... I have to recharge it again.. I didn't use it... I just left it with wifi active...
When I check the usage... It show that 80 % consumed by "Media"..
What the hell is this application /services?
Other time, I tried to turn off that services.. But it turn on again automatically...
I did try factory reset, but I still have this issue...
And, a quarter part of the screen (top) is very hot while other part isn't...
Does anyone know what is going on with my XZU?
Thanks in advance...

Would be great to have a screenshot. Also can you check you wifi data details? Media app is use for media storage, DRM content, downloads and download manager. So to make it simple, it downloaded from night to morning and drained your battery. Do you see apps from the market you didn't download manually installed on your phone? Like a game with over 1gb of data or anything else (if you choices option to auto backup it restore all the apps you use from the market on your previous devices). Or did you put any file to download on any browser reboot our phone before the download is finish (Dolphin browser keep the link in memory and resume or restart download at boot).
First of all I would advise you to put your phone on stamina mod, and set it up if you use some apps like Viber, whatsapp, Facebook and etc... It really improve battery drain while you are not using your phone.

Wifi data details? I m not sure what you mean.. but I m curious that my XZU downloaded any data related to Media...
The last time I remember about it, I played with Jive (which is my primary suspect) (in the Walkman app)...
After that, I tried factory reset...and my last factory reset is last night... and this time, I havent activated my Google account and everything.. just to make sure that no account is activated...
Regarding stamina mod, I have tried it... even used Green Power Premium app (they are very useful)...but only after that issue occurred, then I try to leave it as factory default (I didnt install anything or activate any apps)... and as I said, it still drains the battery severly... and this so called "Media" remains there...
As you can see in the attached pics (sorry for the orientation)..
Thanks ...

Look at this screen shot. On data usage you can show wifi usage as well. Then look if media is listed and how many kb or mb it used. Don't get confuse by the dual panel, my XZU is rooted and I use xposed framework.

download 'betterbattery stats'
Its on the playstore. It will tell you what the wakelocks are. 'media' may be something totally unreleated, and its just what your system thinks is hogging the battery...
do you have LightFlow installed? someone mentioned in another forum that it was killing his battery with that app installed

Currently, I m recharging it and will be 100% capacity...and will see if it will get drained ...
How about you guys, is this "Media" service also running in the background of your device?
Thanks...

Media is not draining anything for me as well. Also just few kb on my data usage, but I remember I got it on my Nexus 7 as well, after a full wipe and flashing a new ROM at morning it was empty. But the day after it wasn't anymore.
You said you didn't registered any gmail account yet. Did it happen as well when you had a Gmail account registered? Just wonder if there is not a bug with the phone connect to Internet and the lack of an account link to playstore.

Before factory reset, yes, my Gmail is activated... now, not yet activated..
BTW, it's been around 15 minutes since I unplugged the charger.. now battery capacity is down to 91%...
It s just standby with wifi active...."Media" consumption 72%
Data service is only around 150 Kb
I just dont understand what is happening...
Maybe battery is damaged?
Do what I suggested. It will tell you exactly what the problem is. Link you to a site explaining what to do for that particular Wake lock.
You can also run an app called 'cool tool'
It will run in real time and tell you what CPU frequency you are running
Here is a video I made about the heat issues of the S4.. It will help you too

Hi, I think the reason of battery drains is not related with downloading data..
I dont know how it happens, but it seems that my device always active even if the screen is off.
I installed app called "wakelock detector"..
The media is the service that keep my device "awake"... it prevents/blocks the system from sleeping...
My question is what is the cause? is my device get infected by virus or malware?
Any suggestion to solve this issue? or is it hardware defect?
EDIT:
I have solved the problem.
I reformatted the sd card and factory reset.
Now, it's back to normal again.
It seems that the system keep on trying to scan the media file in the sd card.
There must be something wrong with my sd card (may be bad sector/cluster).
After reformatted it, everything seems normal.
Cheers

I'm not familiar with that app. Did you try betterbattery stats? It should have told you what it was, and linked you to a site explaining what the app or service is. Then you can freeze that service or uninstall it if its not a system app.

Hello,
I just installed Android Booster FREE. It's an app that allows you to see what apps are draining the most.
And I maybe found a reason of high OS usage.
On my phone the top 1 draining app is MTP Application(with 36%). Since it's an Android app(package name: "com.android.MtpApplication), it'll be counted in Android OS and is indeed listed.
Could anyone please try and verify this on their own phones? To see app specific usage, install with link above, open it ->Utilities -> Power Manager -> Applications.
Sorry if this isn't the reason or if it's only on my phone. But I don't think so. And it would be a good reason since MTP application is Samsung-specific. My firmware: XKE2.
Please let me know! Thanks!
And please don't vote if you have frozen your apps !

that's strange, but that's also counted as a part of "Android OS" I think, so it could be that (even though I don't have that!).

Hmm if it's that I would look a bit dumb with creating a thread for that ^^'. I installed it on advice from someone on this forum in Themes/apps section(here), and I though it wasn't bad because the rest of the apps seems to be correct with me /:.
Here is my usage. Its Android OS again... but look at the time since unplugged and the total power left (60%)!! I have used it quite a bit as well. Ive never had a smart phone that lasts so long.

Since upgrading to 4.1.2 I'm suffering a bit with battery life. Looking at BBS, in the past 57 minutes my battery has gone from 100 to 92% I've had 242 wakelocks from GTALK_ASYNC_CONN_com.google.android.gsf.gtalkservice.AndroidEndpoint
Now when I was on 4.1.1 I suffered terrible battery life until I unticked "Use wifi to help determine location", and then I was averaging about 32-34 hours to a full battery (about 3% per hour), great! I was very happy with that. Now I'm losing 7-10% per hour and this wakelock seems to be the issue.
After Googling about a bit there doesn't seem to be a concrete solution, so any help is appreciated.

Maybe you can log out of GTalk?
It seems to be a Gtalk issue so why not log out of it ?
Better yet, just uninstall it for few days and observe the behavior.

Hi Eggman, thanks for your reply.
I should have mentioned in the first post, from what I've read it isn't actually Google+ that causes this, it's a general Google Account process, and to be fair I shouldn't have to log out of G+ to save battery, I don't with FB or Twitter. (I'm not shooting the messenger here)
Anyway, luckily I don't use G+ so it I have just loaded it up and logged out, let's see if it changes anything.
He says gtalk, you say g+... See the discrepancy?

Sorry, I thought Gtalk was just a byproduct of Google+, basically like Facebook Chat is to Facebook.
Well, either way I've logged out of Google+ and it's completely killed the wakelock. Weird.
Gtalk and google services like gmail were facing a widespread outage today. So that's why the wakelock. It'll get fine once the service resumes normally.

My girlfriends Nexus 4 had this wakelock and it was draining her battery pretty quickly. I monitored it for a bit and realised that at work she connects to a free wifi network which blocks the ports Google Service uses to sync. I told her not to use that wifi network anymore and the wakelock has gone.
Could it be something similar to this for you?

Yes at my work we have proxy connection wifi and I realised when wifi is on this wakelock is and when I'm on 3g it isn't. But the weird thing I didn't have this wakelock at all before 4.1.2 with the same situation.

Ive had this issue for a while now, its a massive wakelock compared to the rest of them!
The solution that worked for me, although I need help with it, is to disable all the 'gtalk' entries under Google Framework Services in the app called Autorun Manager.
Freezing the app, or logging out has no effect as its linked with Gmail and Play store.
HOWEVER, when i disabled these entries i therefore couldnt get gmail to auto sync anymore (didnt try play store).
SO, there are about 5 or so entries in the framework that have the word 'gtalk'. If someone could find the entry that disables this lock but still keeps gmail (and whatever else) working properly that'd be great.

From what I've personally seen, that wakelock is related to some as-yet-discovered google service doing it's thing over Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only. When connected to my house's Wi-Fi, I've seen in a couple of times...but there is a mobile AP at my work and I am guessing they've locked things up tight and might be restricting certain traffic.... in any case, when I am connected to the APs at work, that wakelock GOES NUTS. I disable Wi-Fi... and POOF! the wakelock vanishes. As soon as I pop it back in, the WL cranks back up again. I turned off Sync and it still keeps cranking. I tried disabling google's backup, you name it.. still there. I haven't quite found out exactly what process is throwing that WL... is there a way to find that out?
Something seems to be trying to phone home over my Wi-Fi, can't, and its throwing up a WL while it keeps trying. But when I'm running over the Mobile network, it's happy as a clam and never heard from. Is there a way to find the exact process/service that is triggering this wakelock?
Hey guys, im kinda new to android but im not new to computers... so please dont say stuff like turn off wifi or turn off bluetooth and gps
I have disabled S Voice, S planner, And most of the crappy samsung stuff. I have only 2 email accounts connected to my gmail app and yes my auto sync is on. My phone is not rooted and i do not intend to do so ever. I just want to use the stock rom and launcher..
So the problem im facing is horrible battery life. I generally fully charge my phone till 10pm and dont use it overnight... then in the morning i just listen to some music on the way to school for about 1 hour and 30 minutes (yes i know my school is very far away from my house). then my phone is on standby for like 6-8 hours. and then at about 3pm i use it again for music and facebook n stuff... by 4:30pm i only have 20-30% battery left with only 1 hour and 50 minutes of screen on time..
please help me to increase the battery life because im pretty sure that its supposed to last much longer.
PS nfc, voice command, google now, wifi, gps, bluetooth etc is off.
1. Using auto sync kills the battery. It is constantly checking for emails, syncing with Google, Facebook etc etc... this might be one of the reasons.
2. I suggest you put the screen brightness on auto. one of the biggest battery consumption of now a days smartphones are the big screens.
3. Try to upgrade your phone to a newer version, that might help either. some people report that after upgrading to a newer version, the battery life improved for them.
4. Turn of Mobile Data. This is a HUGE battery drainer!
That is what I can think of.
I hope I managed to help you

Well dud i would take it to a service centre .
As you don't want to root then the only XDA device is to factory reset .
You can of course try a Samsung forum for more advice that does not involve root .

As you don't want to root then the only XDA device is to factory reset .
You can of course try a Samsung forum for more advice that does not involve root .

i already tried restoring it... didnt help.
and i took it to the service centre too, they are like "we didnt find any problem with it". im from india so the people in service centres here are useless, they are uneducated and dont care about others. So yeah no help from there
and does everyone have to root to use the phone as advertised i mean i just dont want to spend hours and hours on tweaking my phone so that it works as any other phone does.
and how many hours of screen on do u get on normal usage?

I agree. . If you want to have a conventional phone, then use the conventional repair channels.

Facebook/Whatsapp/Viber/Tango, all these programs consume alot of battery as they need to wake the phone and check for notifications (messages etc... ). I'm not saying don't install them, I'm saying you shouldn't have the Mobile Data turned on all the time. I'm assuming you don't send a message every second, right? Or check the email every second? (and I also assume that you are not a business man since you go to school...) The world won't collapse if you don't check your email/Facebook/Whatsapp every 5 seconds. That is my advice to you, you can choose to accept it or reject it, its your choice.

i understand what u are saying. However i cant find any option to tell the gmail app to fetch my email every half an hour or so like it is in iPhone (in iphone u can choose ur fetch time). I dont get notificaions every second and even every hour for that matter but i need mobile data on for whatsapp atleast and i have already turned off facebook sync i.e. it only looks for notifications. i dont have viber or tango installed.
and do u really think mobile data is using up all my battery coz i saw this website that said the s3 can give up to 6 hours of web surfing.

If you drop down the notification window, u should find there a Sync option. disable it. That should do it for the Sync issue.
You can't understand how much battery turning off Mobile Data saves...
Trust me, people won't go nuts if you don't answer them just as you receive the message
So you can chat with your friends, but don't forget to turn off Mobile Data, so it won't consume a lot of battery
AW: Battery not lasting more than 2 hours
I have had the same problem so I flashed the Siyah kernel and even overclocked it to 1,7 ghz. Awkwardly my battery lasts much much longer now. About 2 days of average usage.

so do u prefer i turn on wifi instead? does that use less battery than 3G?
and i know how to disable sync!
Looking at your screen shots there appears nothing wrong with your phone, it's doing exactly what Samsung intended it to do as a 'connected hub for your online life' - but it will eat your battery as the phone is working and communicating all the time while you're not using it.
Either live with a charger close at hand or disable the 30 or so rubbish apps and services they included to burn through your battery. Who cares about OTA updates, delete your Samsung account, check your facebook using the browser instead of an app etc.
I get 2 days use from one charge with at least 6 to 8 hours screen on time included, but my phone is only awake when I turn the screen on, doing what I want it to do - not amusing it's self when turned off. That requires a custom ROM or rooting at least to kill the persistant stock apps.
Using wifi instead of 3G will reduce power consumption quite a bit, especially if your 3G signal is weak.

Even if you don't use the Samsung apps & services they are still running in the background, you are certainly using the Facebook app as it ate a large amount of your battery. Disable the facebook app and instead use the browser to check it just when you need to, this is just an example btw - it won't solve your overall problem.
I use Vikingway ROM, which is a very stripped down version of stock so everything still works. It should double your battery life, but your online social life will suffer.

i know i have disabled most of them from the applications manager. Come on i wont use fb on the browser, i had a htc wildfire s before this i have suffered enough
this is my first good smartphone and i really wanna make the most of it so yeah
what do u think about the cyanogenmod btw?
Install AppQuarantine
Disable Maps and Facebook. Them to alone cause most battery station with absolutely no use. You mentioned you use Facebook often.. Use a widget to quick enable+open/disable Facebook for example.
Facebook uses 5% battery just like that. Maps up to 15%
Whenever you reboot your device look at running apps. Almost everything should be killed except Google services.
Manage what syncs. Limit Google syncing to gmail only.
And then some
Root:
Root your S3. Use SetCPU profiles when screen is off 200-300 ondemand governor. Under volt if necessary for that extra up to 5%.
International S III 16GB / Dualboot 4.1.2 Stock & Cyanogenmod 10.1 / Gokhan's SK
I seem to get varying degrees of battery life. Was getting great battery life with Perseus kernel, then all of a sudden after restoring from a nandroid backup it went terrible.
Mayeb going to switch back to siyah kernel and follow some of the battery life threads

Thank you so much guys, I just got the 4.1.2 update and since then my battery lasts about 3 hours on screen on time and the standby time had also increased quite significantly. I have also turned off auto sync and that helps a lot too.

Hi. I recently posted on this forum coz I always only had 120 free MBs and my smartlhome started to go pretty slow without any reason. When I was typing on whatsapp it suddenly closed, I couldn't send any instant camera pictures because camera suddenly closes too, etc...
So I decided to root my phone and uncheck the 2 options of MLT Test (Enable option and USB depurate option) and seems like I get more free mbs but now the RAM it started to get short again, Im still gettin 150mbs again and thats annoying....
There is any solution ti fix this? Im using Clean Master too.
Greetings.
Ps. I got an app of my Phone Company and I dobt know how to unibstall it, it is desactivated but I couldnt find thr way to erase it, I've tried many explorers but didn't show up.

Disable mlt is always a good way of gaining a little more ram, also the longer you have your phone running, the more it'll start lagging. So restart it for at least every time you charge it again. Also a bit more than that. Clearing caches isn't always the right solution, due to the fact that your phone has to load everything again, and it is sometimes quicker if you already have the apps cache there as the app will start quicker. If you have a lot of your apps running in the background, messenger, Facebook etc which are quite heavy when it comes to taking up ram, either delete them, or find apps which automatically close certain apps you choose yourself, and remove them from starting on boot.

Now I got one more question.
I'm gettin 43º (thats what Clean Master says) when I'm using whatsapp but CM saysa that's ok...
Is that really OK or should I worry?

Completely forgot to mention, if you go into developer settings, then there should be a ProcessStatics or something, it's also called geeky stats, in there it tells how the memory status is, which is the thing managing ram and so on, you can click on every app and see how much it uses and so on, its quite handy. And I'm not sure about the temperature, it doesn't sound alarming so it should be fine

I have an HTC Droid DNA on Verizon running Android 4.4.2 (for a while now) and it's been pretty solid until about two weeks ago. All of a sudden it has started eating battery like mad, and the battery info says that the dialer or android system are the largest users of battery. I'm talking like full charge in the morning to dead by mid afternoon PLUGGED IN TO MY COMPUTER. I'm down 10% battery in the last 1.5 hours with the phone charging. The phone is in global mode, the location is set to "battery saving," I have good signal here (East Sacramento, Ca). I found some old threads on similar battery issues and read through them, tried what they recommended. I reset the cache partition first, no dice. I did a factory reset, and that seemed to work for a few days, but now the problem is back. I can't reset every few freaking days or my life will be a constant loop of reentering passwords. Could this be some sort of virus with a really good rootkit? I'm at my wit's end. Anybody know what this might be? I'd appreciate any help y'all can offer. Thanks.
Disable any sync in settings, it sounds like an app is trying to sync your contacts and is having issues making dialer and system keep on trying to sync those for you. That is my only thoughts other than some rogue app doing something to call dialer and system as factory reset fixes it, so it has to be something in settings or an app that gets installed on your end.

Here goes . . .
Thanks for the quick reply. I live by sync, but I'll certainly try it and see what happens. Any idea of how I might figure out which app it is if that's the issue?

Seems not to Help.
So I've disabled sync, and I'm still losing about 1% battery every 1-3minutes. so I get roughly 2-3 hrs. battery from full charge at that rate, and plugging in while running only slows the bleeding. Under battery usage, Dialer is 45%, Android system is 33%, and Internet is 10%, followed by play services, linkedin and mediaserver for a combined 5%. Hmmm . . .

Hmm. Have you tried disabling location and WiFi location consent? It might be gplay services keeping GPS or WiFi scan on. I haven't had this issue in awhile as I just use greenify to sleep pretty much every app I have and important ones have gcm so they can wake for a quick email/text/etc check once in awhile.

Is this thread dead?
Having the same issue on my girlfriend's DNA; Dialer seems to account on the most battery drain.
Have you tried the suggested solution already? I never personally ran into this issue. Then again only my SIM syncs contacts and nothing else does as I am a privacy nut and don't want other services to know my contact list.

Yeah, tried unsynching everything.
Seems that the issue resolved itself when I cleared cache from recovery...
Then, instead of the dialer being the culprit; Android system was...
Planning on doing full factory reset this weekend.
