Phone stuck on android screen - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Help, my phone is stuck on the android screen where the arrow is coming out of the box like its downloading. Verizon could not help me and I did call Samsung and they couldn't do any good over the phone so they had me mail it to them. They did a software reflash and said it needed additional work done on it and wanted to charge me 70.00. The phone is out of warranty. I bought from individual in super great condition and it was working fine for about 3 days and then it froze on the Verizon screen. I took the battery out and did what Verizon said do and now its been stuck in the android screen. that's why I sent to Samsung. any suggestions on how to fix?

take a picture of it and attach it so i can see what it looks like.

Will it go into download mode? (pull battery hold volume down plug into computer) If so try using Odin yourself... Just an idea.

Yes I did get it to go into download mode. Its showing the Android with the shovel. Underneath it it says "Downloading"... Do not turn off Target!!!!!!!!
You told me to use Odin. Can you explain to me what that is? I am sorry.....

odin is a tool made by samsung to flash firmwares to their phones using Download Mode. they never actually released it to the public. it's also pretty easy to use, just be careful.
anything that is flashed on this phone goes in the PDA box AND ONLY THE PDA BOX. anything else will probably brick it.
the preferred version of Odin is either 1.83 or 1.85. google either one and you should be able to download it. if not, i have a copy of 1.83 that i could put on dropbox. download that first and then reply with the progress you made.

Well my phone stayed hooked up to my computer all night long and the android with the shovel is gone. But when I put the battery back in and turn on the little android with the box and the arrow coming out of it comes back on. ugh. so what do I need to do now?

plug in your phone again, run Odin, and look in the General forum for a guide made by a user named droidstyle. look for how to restore back to stock. follow the steps there and your stock firmware should be restored.
i'm still unsure of what screen you're stuck at, but just restore back to stock in download mode

My screen on my phone is black and it has the picture of a box with an arrow coming out of it with the little android standing in front of it. The phone screen will blink like its updating but that's where it stuck when I sent it to Samsung.

A friend of mine at work got my phone finally working. He did download a different operating system. Now I can send texts but I can send them. On this operating system the download part wont work so I don't have "The Market' or "The play store. what can this be causing these issues?

tried to install eb01 rom through odin, it failed
got into download mode again
tried installing DI01package3.tar through odin it failed at around 60%
download mode/recovery mode won't start anymore.
instead when I connect the phone I get some weird loading thing that's not moving
and now my PC won't recognize it
Picture of the loading thing?
Also, did you flash the voodoo for another phone?
EDIT: Try taking the battery out and holding the down button while plugging it in, if that doesn't work, you probably flashed something for another phone and you'll need to either use a jig or get a warranty replacement.
EDIT2: Also try this:
Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding Volume Down + Home + Power.
or this: take out the battery, hold both Volume Up + Volume Down and plug it into usb.

That was a no no. Those were for the Verizon Fascinate. That's over my head but maybe someone else knows a way to recover from it. Otherwise, you have a brick. And there really should be different sections for the various carriers.

hey I dont know what thread I read this on but there was a way to force your phone into download mode, I think the thread is call fun resistors or something.
basicaly the phone is set to do things depending on what is plug to by the usb cable, for instance if you have a car dock it pulls the car app and same for homedock pulls the clock app. well there is a set resistance that will make the phone go into download mode. download mode might be intact but the buttons might no so when you press them it does not detect, but with the resistors it might.
let me know how it goes.

Here's the link. Funny I had just been reading about this for a friend's Vibrant that went and killed itself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
Keep in mind that that is in the i9000 forum, so I don't know if each phone uses different resistances to send the phone into download mode or not. Also, I would highly recommend using the suggested USB-micro breakout board, which is available here:
http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10031
It will make life SO much easier.
Do some more googling about your phone, and about forcing it into download mode before you just go soldering in 301k resistors onto a usb board.
Good luck.
Your phone basically IS the Vibrant, follow the steps for the Vibrant to fix it, but use the Telus Fascinate Odin files.
I hope you can find a full odin package cause the DI01 package flashed the bootloaders, modem, and everything else on your phone. Most likely, you have a true brick and you aren't going to be able to fix it.

If you can't find one, use one for the Vibrant, it won't hurt seeing as you already flashed the files for the VZW Fascinate.
If he has anything appearing on the screen at all, it's not a true brick. There's a Telus fix-all Odin. He needs to jig himself into download (see this thread for the simplest method) and apply that (step 1 in this post).
Do *NOT* use any Vibrant Odin stuff. The SBL for that can actually kill the Telus deader than dead.

The OP, on the other hand, is on Telus so he needs a different Odin fix-all package.

from the op: Flash it from odin using the same instructions as my root thread
You may need the USB Drivers available here. (Support & Downloads for SGH-I717)
Once the USB Drivers are installed, power off the phone, then hold volume down and power it on, you'll get a screen asking you to hit vol up to continue, do so. This puts the phone in download mode.
Stick the provided pda.tar in the PDA box of Odin3 1.85, flash away!

Unfortunately, I do not see a "Gnote link" in your signature? I just updated to ICS last night, through Samsung Kies software, to Android 4.0.4 and I am seeing sluggish response, I tried to call someone and it took over a minute before the call actually started. The phone randomly "resets" and by that I mean that it will disconnect from whatever I am doing, go to the lock screen and I can see the status icons at the top repopulating, taking up to 30 seconds before the WiFi will reconnect. If I am connected to the PC at this point it loses connection and then is redetected. I lose connection in Kies as well during these times and my bluetooth headset loses connection at the same time. This did not happen before the ICS update last night.
Which is why I am thinking about going back to Gingerbread. I have the Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-I717 model as well.
I have rebooted the phone with the power off feature, as well as removing the battery and letting the system start up from scratch with no change in the behavoir.
----- Edit------ 3:14PM CST
After checking a few things on the phone, I booted into fastmode and wiped the cache memory and the sluggishness seems to have gone away. I will do more testing and place calls to confirm.

You likely have a bad rom image ...
Kies and OTA upgrades often corrupt data and cause device issues..
Bigjoe has changed his signature since his replies were posted in July..
Simply go into the "note super everything thread"...located at the top of the general note section. Then see the first post..

I'm looking through the forums here, but I don't see one that compares the different roms available, I will probably flash back to the GB rom tonight but kinda looking for an ICS or JB update that will work on the phone. Trying to get back to stock!! please help.

So I'm sure I'm going to get flamed ,or told to go read, or have grammar made fun of. But at this point I I'm lost. I have attempted to download every file and try every method listed to get my phone back to stock, nothing is working.
ROM: Team objection UCLE 2 #2 RC1
Baseband: 1717UCLF5
Carrier: at&t
Up until now I have never had too ask for help reading was always enough to get all the info I needed but not this time.
Ok so, work kies it will never connect to the service the phone that is, all drivers up to date. PC can see it just fine.
Have tried to use the different unrooted methods in the super everything thread such as the Odin flash and ask the others listed. Can some one please help me before I really mess up my phone?

See the file right after #11 that is what I used.. Wondering if you are in download mode when in Odin.. There are different ways.. This is only what I did.. I hope this helps you
Will this get me back to being able to connect to Kies so I can do the upgrade? I know this one said unroot but I was unsure if i need to get back to a stock ROM as well. I kow I read some where able to unroot thought kies, but all I was ever able to get was a connection error.
Yes , I was in DL mode in Odin as well, but hey sometime we have to ask the obvious questions like. " Is the device plugged in to the outlet"
You don't need to go back to stock to get the ics upgrade!
Go to the samsung page where you upgrade (this link was sent out by at&t in a tezt message), scroll down near the bottom and do the emergency firmare install.
It will wipe your phone clean but will leave your sd card alone.

I saw nothing on the Samsung page that instructs on how to do the emergency firmware install.
First download Kies and install it with your phone unplugged from the computer. make sure Kies does all its updates. while its updating remove your battery and write down your S/N as well as the model of the phone cause youll need it, go ahead and remove ur SD card to be safe. Once its fully updated put your phone into DOWNLOAD MODE, then connect it to the computer. in Kies goto Firmware Upgrade and Initialization in the Tools Menu. This will wipe everything from your phone so backup any pictures/music/movies whatever. your going to accept the new firmware install and be asked for your S/N of the phone and the phones model number. depending on your internet speed should take about 15 mins or less to do the upgrade to ICS
How do I get the emergency code to xo this

I tried that. It disconnects the device then asks for a code. It does not install the update - at least on my device.

[Solved] Device Not Eligible

I did something I shouldn't. I accidentally flashed a Gingerbread kernel on stock ICS. I was stuck at the boot screen, then flashed a stock Gingerbread ROM. My phone boots now, but I can't get it to upgrade through Kies (I think it's because the baseband is UCLF6). Also, the Contacts and Phone apps crash constantly. At this point I'd just like to get back to stock ICS, I think I'm done rooting for today.
Kernels have to match the roms. Ics for ics etc. If u want to change your baseline then u must flash a gingerbread radio. U can also just flash a ics stock rom If u want to upgrade to ics again. Most rom will include the kernels radios and all just find the rom u want and follow that devs instructions.

Did you have CWM installed?
Then just go into recovery and flash any ICS rom.
Did you get the stock ICS from the samsung-kies website?
Then you can use the tools menu and do emergency firmware install.
But you're right -- take a break and attack it later. As long as the phone gets into download mode you are ok.

No CWM, I upgraded through desktop Kies. I can download stock from the website?
Yes. And all the steps are there with pictures!
You should uninstall your Kies on your pc and reboot it before you install the Kies on the website.
The site I am talking about is not www.samfirmware.com. I am referring to the samsung ics upgrade site.

Emergency firmware upgrade says not eligable?

It wants a code from the previous PC. I don't have one.
That's something else. Put your phone in download mode. Kies will not connect. It'll just keep saying connecting. Then use emergency firmware. Use caps for any info it asks for. Correct me if I'm wrong Ranger. Don't have it in front of me.

I was looking at the emergency recovery, not the upgrade initializer. I put in the SN and model number, it's running now.

After downloading the image the progress bar is stuck at 0%. Kies said put it in recovery mode, so I did. Should I have put it in download? Can I just hit reboot on the menu?
I think you are getting closer.
In kies click on tools>emergency firmware recovery a window should popup
boot your device into download mode
on the "emergency fw recovery window" should show your device... it will ask for your SN and model, input them as it shows on the back of your device. It will then install the latest Samsung FW (ICS).

Success! Thanks for everyone's help, I'll be a little more careful when figuring out how to root next time (my last phone was an iPhone, I guess I was spoiled by one-click jailbreaks).
Congratulations! Go into recovery and make a backup. When you are setting up your phone get Titanium Backup app and an sms and phone call backup app. Before you experiment use those backup apps.
Edit the title of your post to say [solved].

Don't you need root for Titanium Backup?
Yes you do.
Oh, I'm not rooted, I don't think I want to go through this again.
Lol dude. Stick with what's working for you. If you decide to root down the road, just read like crazy.

Brick help needed

I recently rooted my phone to the latest Siyah version. I noticed the capacitive buttons not working correctly and then I noticed the version I had was for I900. I went into cwm and installed the correct kernel for my phone but it did not fix the problem. I realized after that I didnt clear the cache. So I went into clockwork recovery and tried to fix that but I hit something to cause my phone to go to a black screen and had litle flashes every once in a while. I took out the battery and the galaxy screen with the triangle pops up but then goes to black. If I hit the power button it will show the battery charging button briefly but then goes away.
After all that. My question is can my phone be saved?
Thanks,
Mike

Yes, almost certainly.
First, please confirm the model of your phone. Do you have SGH-I777?
You will need to boot into download mode, and install the stock Gingerbread firmware UCKH7 that the phone originally came with. From that point, you can update or modify the phone as you prefer.
From what you say, it sounds like you need to do a fair amount of reading of the sticky post items such as the faq and guides and elswhere in this forum to get a good foundation of information about the phone and how it works. Understanding makes it much safer to work with your phone.

Yes. I have the I777. When I originally installed the kernel I downloaded it from the I777 section and it was supposed to be a 1 click thing till I realized those little issues of the I900.
I finally got into odin mode and it says its downloading. I can also now see it on my computer. Not sure what its downloading but its better than the black screen i was getting. Been on the downloading screen for 5 minutes or so. Just gonna leave it downloading till it does something or someone tells me something better to do
Thanks for your help!
***Update I downloaded the UCKH7 on to the phone and Odin(on the computer said successful) The phone is still stuck on Downloading... Do not turn off target. I didnt have the auto reboot selected on Odin. Should I try diusconnecting the phone and rebooting with the power button or just wait until it does it? been hung on it for 10 minutes even though the computer said it was done.

It showing downloading, but you open odin in compyuter to download. Are you downloaded stock rom like UCKH7 from here or here to flash via odin?

Go to the guide how to install custom binaries... which is linked in my signature. Read it untill you understand the basics. It will explain how to use Odin and download mode. Once you understand, flash the UCKH7 stock plus root package that is linked in the guide. This is assuming that you want root and to customize your phone.

if u follow the guide then u prolly have a rooted stock(assuming u used the rooted stock package) which Kies is not friendly with maybe due to having a non-stock kernel, also 2.3.4 is GINGERBEAD. Now if u plan to flash ICS ROM's i suggest forget bout Kies & go back to the guide & learn how to flash a kernel w/ CWM.
