So, it seems that I have completely wiped my OS from the phone. And now i'm not able to really do anything. Wondering if you guys could lead me to a link where I can download the stock OS or something like that. Just so i'd be able to use it again because right now it's not doing anything. I was trying to install cyanogenmod and than I messed up along the way and didn't have a backup, although I thought I had made one. I really need to know if I've permanently screwed my phone because I don't have a lot of money to buy a new one.

Hello,
Does anyone happen to know if rooting and then unrooting is safe (I've search with no results). I mean this is in the sense that if you root you get super user access but that also means that the program (such as SuperSU) that you're rooting with gets super user access as well right? What if the problem is collecting your data (contact, texts, etc.)? Also should you trust a factory restore kernel that is supplied through one of these forums? Couldn't it be altered so that it was invasive? Thanks in advance for any information you can pass along, I'm pretty new to this stuff.

Really sir, you need to read some more before you truly brick your device, here is a good start.

This will help you understand the rooting procedure as well as other important info.
You should be worrying more about apps, some of those collect data, and send it everywhere
my sister flashed a rom on her i9300 and didn't backup the efs folder. and left me with the mess.
i flashed a stock 4.0.4 rom on it but the imei is still 0049....
i tried to fix it on windows xp and w7.
there are a lot of solutions out there but none of them worked for me.
so far i tried:
1) Ariza patch
2) i created a text document using sgs3 nv item generator to use with the different recommended software.
for this to work i had to connect my s3 as a usb com port but that didn't really work because the *#7284# dial command did nothing. i used the SManager to run a script that is supposed to do the same thing. the phone did show up in the device manager, but as a samsung mobile usb modem. using USBDeview i saw that it was listed as port COM9 (COM18 on XP), and most of the guides out there show the connection as COM1.
maybe as a result the following programs that were recommended to change the nv items did not work. maybe it was for different reasons:
-Maui META 3g V6 - could not connect to phone. it only offered to connect to COM8 which was also listed as samsung mobile usb modem but was shown in USBDeview as inactive whereas the COM9 was active.
-NV items reader/writer - i picked the samsung mobile usb modem port (COM18) and connected to it, but once i tried to read or write the program would reply "failed... phone does not answer"
-CdmaDevTerm v.2 - couldn't understand how to work it and found no guides. i fiddles around trying to write an IMEI # but it kept getting stuck.
-cdma workshop 2.7 - managed to connect to the port but when i clicked the read button it replied "failed... phone does not answer" and i didn't get the phone's info. it still gave me this information:
first nv item:0
last nv item: 3994
-qpst - i couldn't even pick the port i wanted. only COM1, which was no help.
anyone has an idea what i did wrong?
thanks,
shahar.

Ariza patch isn't even ANYTHING to do with this. Suggest you stop and read before you brick your device with multiple solutions.
Qpst - not for this phone
Cdma - not this phone
Imei can be fixed in mobile phone shop for £20. Please read the existing thread.

Qpst is not for the i9300. It doesn't have anything qualcomm related inside. There are many other versions of the s3 that do. Just not ours.
Flash latest rom mg4 or later to ensure you can read efs v2. If that fails send for repair. These are not new answers. Reading is understanding. Following videos on youtube is blindly jumping off a cliff. Read the sticky threads (as I suggest) and if you don't understand anything in a particular thread ASK in that thread.
All the answers are in that thread. There are no other answers. Read. Learn. Understand. Stay away from YouTube. This is my advice to you

No problem. Just to be clear, never follow advice for other models of the s3. Only specifically the i9300. All the other models are completely different and advice from those phones may brick yours

Good morning everyone!
I'd really like to know why installing a custom rom can delete or modify the EFS folder ....
And also why the IMEI of the device is stored in it.
What developers are doing to make it happen???
I did not backup this folder and even if he had done believe it would do.
The folder can not be deleted, nor overwritten ......
I always thought that the IMEI was written on a chip can only be read and not written.
Look my search results about IMEI here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=222446237
And here too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=222446965
This is absurd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lost my S3 last week and would like someone to explain to me why this happens .....
Can anyone help me???
I know that many people will read this post looking for a solution to the same problem, but I can not help.
I hope the answer of "developers".
And I hope to see here "indie" and also the "Kryten2k35"
:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
Read the stickies/RTFM.
Why is hard to say because all this text contains no specific details. Best answer, read the imei / efs thread in general > sticky roll-up thread

Hey guys, this is my first thread on here so i'll try to be descriptive.
i'm running an i-9300 international in the UK. I recently changed to omega rom and it's been working great but unfortunately my speeds on mobile data are horrendously slow even on H+. my wifi speeds are better than ever so i've surmised it's not connected.
after some research i found out the modem for my network (tmobile) is I9300BVEMF1 i flashed this and afterwards the phone doesn't recognise my sim.
I flashed it back to the previous modem and it works but slowly.
On stock it works much better. Is there anything i can do?
Hi,
We have a sticky thread all about IMEI / EFS issues. This is because if you do a search here now, you'll find literally hundreds of threads all about the same thing.
Please go to:
general > Sticky roll-up thread > "IMEI / EFS - Know this stuff"
... have a read. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask them in that thread. We set it up to try and keep the forum tidy.
Thanks

Hi all,
I've been advised on another forum that this is the place to come for help/advice on rooting my phone.
I have an international S3 GT-I9300
Android Version: 4.1.2
Baseband Version: I9300XXEMG4
Kernel Version: 3.0.31-1314436
[email protected] #1
Build Number: JZ054K.I9300XXEMG4
I have been toying with the idea of rooting for a while, and am soon to be changing my phone for a Nexus 5, so I want to have a play before I change.
Just have a few questions that need answering if possible:
1. If I back up with Helium can I restore from back-up once device is rooted, or am I better getting and using Titanium Back Up?
2. Can I restore contacts etc from cloud?
3. What programs do I need, I already use Odin to flash stock firmwares?
4. Is there an idiots guide anywhere that I can follow step-by-step?
and lastly for now,
5. I'd like a fast ROM with good battery life that doesn't need updating/re-flashing every few weeks.
I mainly use my phone for browsing, gaming and camera if that helps?
I'm sure I'll have a few more questions but that's all I can think of at the moment.
Thanks in advance for your help
