[Q] Brick after updating firmware - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello Everyone,
Yesterday I decided to update the firmware on my EVO and after what I thought was a successful flash it refused to reboot.
I used a 3.17.651.4 OTA bootloader flashable that I put on the root of my ext sd card and flashed. It went through all the steps and it prompted me for a reboot which I did. It failed to turn back on after that. When I plug it into windows it shows up as QHUSB_DLOAD. The charging light no longer functions. Update was performed unplugged.
Phone before update:
S-Off w/ Facepalm
CM 10.1 not sure which nightly
Hboot:1.15.0000
Radio: 1.05.11.0606
Any and all help is appreciated.
Thank you very much

What happens when you plug your phone up to a PC? Do you get any type of message on the computer?

It tries to install drivers and then gives me a failed driver installation. Then it shows up on the computer as QHUSB_DLOAD.

You might be able to save it by having a JTAG done on it. You might shoot Zarboz a PM and see if that's a viable option in your situation.

Can to get into the bootloader?

Same thing happened here. Did you use firmware from the captain?

Yes I did.

If you're going to flash the latest firmware, you should at least already be up to date. You were on a REALLY old radio. If I have to create a new full flashable with the sbl pieces from 3.16, I guess that what I'll have to do.
Why are people not on the latest firmware already?

Captain, im not blaming you. and i was on the last radio updated from you before i tried to update. Honestly dont know what happened and i wont blame anyone but myself.

Well I updated the 3.17 firmware zip with the additional pieces from the 3.16 firmware to prevent any future bricks.
Unfortunately, in the course of me downgrading to make sure it would work I used the wrong firmware file and bricked my device.

Yeah well, those are the breaks. I don't expect any update for this device for a few months, so I guess I can use my OG for a bit. But it will prevent me from doing any additional work on the port. If I could upgrade at this point, I certainly would. But I guess I'll just have to be content with a replacement, as soon as I can get one.

Hello
I just received the 3.17 update also. I am running 3.16, and am also stock rooted. If I install this update will I lose root or possibly brick my device?
Thanks,
Mark

Wrong thread and pretty much just wrong but....
Never accept OTA updates when rooted. You can find the rooted version of 3.17 in the development section.

[Q] Getting the Amaze tomorrow S-off advice

Ok here goes. Since the ics leak came out i can only assume that the Official update cant be that far behind. i have been reading the S-off and the Ics leak threads for about an hour or so now. and i have come to the following understanding: if i dont s off before installing the leak ( or even installing the official that ia on its way) then there is a chance i could never get s off.
So these are my questions
1. What are the advantages of having s-off
2. Should i just Root and s-off as soon as the phone comes in order to be sure i will have s-off
Sorry if these questions are "noob questions" and thank you in advance
You could wait for the official update which won't require you to root your phone or have S-OFF. T-Mobile hasn't released a date on when the update will come, but I'm sure it'll be when the One S is released. After I just updated to the leaked version my phone is no longer rooted and my bootloader is locked again, but I still have S-OFF

Well Having S-off allows you more control over your phone. you can flash radios, Eng/Mod Hboot images and have access to basically all partitions. if you upgrade to ICS before getting S-off you may only be able to have htc unlocked.

I think my problem was that I had a custom Rom installed like you stated somewhere else. So to anyone trying to update from a custom Rom you might have to have S-Off. Otherwise try reverting back to stock and updating it.

Ok, I am new at this whole thing. I have a stock HTC Amaze 4G and LOVE this phone. I have downloaded the file to my SD card and have followed all of the instructions. HOWEVER, before I scroll up to UPDATE in HBOOT mode, or whatever it is called, I need to know if everything is working ok on the phone? I don't want to brick my $550 phone and it only be used as paper weight. Will this update void the exchange warranty on the device? Please advise. Thank you!

Let me make sure I am clear here. If I reboot the phone, push down POWER and VOLUME down, it will go through the process then ask me if I want to update/upgrade. When I push the VOLUME UP button, it will update...yes...but did you experience any problems? IF something goes horribly wrong, am I able to revert back to the stock OS?

Ideally that's what would happen. The only problem I experienced was that it just wouldn't update when I didn't have S-Off it would find the update start unpacking it, fail, then just boot to gingerbread. I also noticed after a failed attempt like that I'd have to recopy the ph85img.zip file to my sdcard, the old one seemed to have been corrupted. There's always a risk associated with flashing non-official roms and updates to your phone. If you don't want to void your warranty It's probably better that you wait for the official update.

I think you are right! I have read reports the update should hit when the new One S goes on sale, WHICH is tomorrow. So, hopefully T-Mobile will push out the OTA tomorrow or this week. Thank you for your advice on this.
According to TMONEWS.com the amaze is scheduled for 6/16.
The Official Tmobile ICS update for the Amaze is finally out (May 21st). My question is very similar the OP. My phone has never been rooted, it has S-on and I finally received the notification for ICS update. My question is can I still get S-off after I do the OTA ICS update? OR should I get S-off first then upgrade to ICS?
Rasco702 yes you can still S-Off your device. There are 2 methods of the Juopunutbear S-Off Method. One for Gingerbread and one for ICS. Even if you wanted to soff while in gingerbread you can flash the RUU for ICS.

You probably took the update and tried to install it with a custom recovery installed. If so, it appears that will result in a partially installed update with the ROM updated and the kernel not being flashed, which causes WiFi errors.
If that's your situation the best thing to do is flash a stock rooted ROM if that is what you were using prior to taking the OTA.

I found this thread because I'm in a similar situation. I tried downloading from the quoted link and using 4eXT recovery to load the zip file from sd card and it says "installation aborted".
Any ideas on what to try next? My eventual goal is to get back to 100% showroom stock non-rooted, locked booloader, so that the phone will accept OTA updates fully. Modding/ROMing is a drug I experimented with, and am now ready to go back to the straight and narrow. I'd prefer the phone not have any scars whatsoever from my old habits.
Additional background:
Started with ICS OTA. Used HTC unlock to unlock bootloader. Coworker installed rom toolbox, superSU and 4eXT recovery (not sure what order) to get SOS rom up and running. Never did go for S-OFF.
Decided I wanted to return to 100% Sprint factory stock. Coworker promptly moved across country, leaving me to figure this out. Tried using several ROMs from XDA and elsewhere, and eventually ended up with a rooted almost stock ROM, but had to flash my own radios via 4eXT, as wifi and 4G weren't working from the rom. Flashing my own radios via 4eXT, got to 2.89 with then current radios.
While sitting in my hotel travelling abroad with no international data plan and super slow hotel wifi, I foolishly downloaded OTA this morning, promptly killing my phone's wifi. Phone is still rooted with 4eXT, superSU, installed on it if that helps.

How about S-Off phones?
Hello... so my fiance' has a Virgin Mobile Evo 3D. I downloaded the update from them and tried to install it through the custom recovery. It did what Ramjet said by updating the ROM and not the Kernel. I now have no wifi,it says wifi error when trying to turn it on. Since then, I have made sure the stock ROM was rooted, and have also HTCDev unlocked the device as well as S-Off with the Junobear wire trick and Linux. Now that I'm S-Off, is it ok to use an RUU to downgrade everything? Just wondering before I go any further and brick the device or screw up something I shouldn't. I figure it's better to ask questions first before doing it lol! Any help is greatly appreciated from anybody! I have my specs listed here for you all:

If ur phone's bootloader is unlocked, relock your phone by using the fastboot command "fastboot oem lock". Then just download the 2.89 RUU.exe. (i know ur on 2.95 but i have not seen the 2.95 ruu floating around hgere yet) Run it on a windows PC and follow the prompts and it should flash correctly on your phone (caution, it will erase everything on your phone). Once its flashed, the phone will reboot (sometimes more than once) just let it do its thing
Once the phone has flashed correctly, do a software update and it will update to 2.95
Worked for me when i had to go back to stock in order to return it for warranty when the digitizer went out
EDIT:
Here is the link to the 2.95 OTA http://d-h.st/vUe
Download to your PC, then unzip it, and run it after you have relocked your phone
Should you need them, here is the list of HBOOTS (thanks to ramjet73) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29844945#post29844945

[Q] Going back to stock (S-ON)(Energy Rom)

Hello, I desperately would like to see how to put my HTC Amaze back to stock. A couple of months ago I tried putting it back to stock because the energy rom kept rebooting on me and draining my battery life randomly. Anyways I was not successful and so I just kept the rom and the rebooting problems stopped anyways. Now, its happening again and I would really love for some one to help me get it back to stock so I can see if it improves and maybe get the thing S-OFF later. I am with Wind mobile.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
A frustrated amaze user.

Hey thanks for the response. So I locked the bootloader and then got the wind RUU renamed it as PH85img.zip or w/e its supposed to be. And now when in the boot screen it cannot find my file I then tried another RUU but this time is used the exe wind one but that one failed as well and came up as an error saying the hboot version is older then what im flashing or something?
So I am stuck at this point. Do you know how to get around this?

Yeah it was connected via usb. I got somewhere, now but im am hoping you can tell me what i need to do now. I followed the second post here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2167596 and now I have GB rom on my phone running unlocked. What do I need to do from here so I can S-off and super CID? PS I tried doing an OTA update from the phone and it wont work.
Looking into the S-off guide it says i must be on a stock RUU. is the one i got install a stock RUU. Also my hboot version is 1.93.0002 (Mar 15 2012) which is ice cream sandwich according to the Unlimited.IO site, but the RUU im on is definitely gingerbread. What can I do about this?

well choice is yours your android version says GB hboot says ICS :/ i say try the GB s-off tool but do at your own risk...
well S-Off worked so thats good haha. Now i am trying to super CID. However, when uploading the proper hboot for doing so it wont let me because of the CID.
Ignore that last post. I figured it out so all is good. Now here is another question, should i flash CM10.1 or your rom that viper one? How would I go about flashing a rom. I remembered before you would just go into recovery and then format all execpt sd card and then install from zip. I tried that with the CM10.1 rom and when I rebooted it did not work.
went ahead and tried installing the Viper rom and after i reboot (when it said all was good) it show a black screen with green arrows. And its stuck on that. I do not know what to do now. Because I should have everything open. Was I supposed to flash something after doing the S-OFF?
This is what I am getting stuck on. I tried another rom too, same thing. I can boot into 4ext. But cant get past this on boot up.

EDIT: The official link has been taken down. If you would still like to download the RUU anyway, I have uploaded it here and here.
NOTE: For those having issues updating via the RUU (drivers, Windows 8.1, etc), see this post for an alternative install method.
NOTE 2: There is an updated RUU (4.13.651.4) which was released to some testers from HTC. The update fixes the data roaming issue. It hasn't been released officially, but there is a download link for it here and a mirror here.
Excellent! Thanks Captain
Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen an official update that voided your warranty before.
Should I be worried that it's been stuck on the "sending" screen (on the PC, Windows 7) and the phone on the HTC logo for over 30 minutes?

Not sure what SuperSU has to do with this RUU, but you should be able to flash SuperSU fine (as long as you're using the recovery from my thread).
So to clarify (sorry if this is a stupid question), but will this keep root? Just have to flash SU after? I'm rooted and s-off right now with custom ROM.

This is an official RUU from HTC. You will lose root and custom recovery. You'll have to flash the custom TWRP from my thread or Philz's modified CWM, and then you can flash SuperSU for root. Make sure your bootloader is unlocked after running this though - otherwise you won't be able to write permanently to /system.
Thanks, captain. I figure it out. I used the modified twrp.

Can anyone using this RUU comment on if their bootloader is still unlocked after?
Still on hboot 1.12.2222 (I think) and can probably figure out flashing supersu through TWRP after I flash TWRP.
Captain, can you link your thread? I've only used your zips for flashing firmware bits, radios, etc.
Thank you,
Skid

My bootloader stayed unlocked the entire time. My thread is in OG Dev. If you flash the RUU, you'll only need a recovery.
I'm experiencing a weird problem with the update. HTC beats audio doesn't enable unless I do the refresh on the blink homescreen or if I disable it, and enable it via settings. Once it goes to another track, it turns off again despite showing the icon that means it is on. I have to repeat the said steps to get it on again. This is using the HTC music app, and Google Play music app. Anyone aware of this? This is all stock with the new RUU.

Okay, thank you. I tried searching on Google, and I did not find anything. Will they address this, or is it unlikely?

Well they knew about it before giving us the final version and they didn't fix it. That suggests to me that it's unlikely to be fixed.
Thanks for this, downloaded and I'm gonna give it a shot, I'd like to root after, but I'm a bit confused, Where do I get the modified twrp? and also a little help on how to flash it cause it's been a while I flash something to my evo and with all the keeping up with my note 2, well I feel like new to the htc evo again.
Thanks!

Yes.
i thought i read somewhere that needed to relock bootloader, so i did, caused me lots of problems trying to flash ruu. it wouldnt complete ruu, got some htc_fastboot.exe errors, had to restart ruu 3-4x...finally decided to unlock bootloader again and give it a go. completed, no issues so far, all is good again. now shows only unlocked, not tampered unlocked as before ruu

AT&T 4.4.2 update solution

These are the steps i took to get the Kit Kat update.
I couldnt get the update OTA like most people and i was completely stock.
So if you are in a similar position these steps may help.
DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!
1. Unlock your bootloader and get root access. I did by following these instructions from this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJYAS2KN17Y&feature=youtu.be
2. Gain S-OFF by following these instructions from this video.
Credits goes to sakitech.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeFwsqU4YL4
3. After you have completed these steps successfully head over to @clsA thread and download the AT&T 4.4.2 OTAPkg.zip and the
stock Recovery_Cingular_US_3.17.502.3.img. Link to the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2659374
4. Place the downloaded .zip on the root your phone storage.
5. follow the steps in @clsA post and flash Recovery_Cingular_US_3.17.502.3.img via fastboot.
6. Navigate to recovery from fastboot on your HTC ONE. If you see "Mount SDCard failed" ignore it. goto to phone storage and locate the update.zip and flash it.

So am I the only person who went into settings and Clicked AT&T update and got the 4.4.2 update that way. I have never had a phone in all my life tell me an update was ready. I always had to check manually about once or twice a week out of boredom. Did the same with my ONE last week and sure enough there was an update and it downloaded and installed fine.

i have been clicking the check for update link at least 10 times a day since the update was released and i didnt get it ota i had to do it manually
If you're stock, you should be able to get the update just by changing the date. I brought my phone back to stock (3.17.502.3) then just kept hitting Software Update. If it didn't update, advance the date and try again. After a few date changes, the update was offered.

Anyone know if there are issues with S-Off and rooting since the update? I am 100% stock, non rooted, never installed a rom. Its been stock since the day I got it. I planned on getting the AT&T update to 4.4.2, rooting, making an update then testing some roms.
I know with other phones the update screwed some things up so I didn't know if rooting/s-off were an issue since the update.
Thanks ll!
Edit:
nevermind...found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663122
So what exactly do we need to get OTA?
Stock recovery, android 4.3, locked bootloader?
I have all that, and still not finding an OTA update. Manually looking for the update, and I'm just not getting it.

Oh, I meant from at&t over the air. I feel like I'm missing something, so trying to find out what the ota requirements are.
I can't flash it yet, I only have a windows 8.1 computer with usb 3.0 ports. Fastboot doesn't work.

@chp recommend advancing your date and try and see if the update comes through. Try it a few times and see if it will work for you also

Tried that with no luck. Had to do a factory reset because I went to far, and my OTA check was in -300 hours.
You guys are forgetting that to be able to update the OTA, you need to have an ACTIVE at&t sim card inserted to your phone. I think this is the reason for all the confusion around since not everybody lives in the US
Downgrade to 4.3
OK, so I was able to upgrade but now I messed it up trying to patch default.xml. :crying:
I am trying to revert to the 4.3 with RRU but I get error 155.
I am S-Off, HBOOT 1.56.
I tried with bootloader re-locked, unlocked, locked. I tried with stock recovery and with ClockWM recovery both locked and unlocked.
I also tried to re-apply the patch with stock recover but it fails verification...
Any ideas how do I go back or fix this?
Thanks
Adrian

The BEST way to make sure that you can run the RUU, whether it be the ATT version, or the Dev Edition is to make sure you downgrade the HBOOT to 1.44. You will never see than error again. No problems at all. Why on Earth though would you want the ATT version, when you can Dev it, and take the 4.4.2 OTA with no carrier BS?

Thank you.
Actually that is what I did. After downgrading HBoot I was able to use the RRU.
Unfortunately I use my phone for work with Mobileiron and will flag it to IT if I'm rooted. I have tried a couple of workaround so but did not work very well. Every time I try to monkey with it IT starts getting emails every 30 min saying my device is not compliant and I am rooted.... So my best solution is to unlock boot loader and flash mods there. Which got me into this trouble....
I can't navigate to the recovery after I flashed Recovery_Cingular_US_3.17.502.3.img to install the OTA. I've tried going to recovery mode and then pressing Power + Vol. Up to no avail. Any help?
