Need help apps behaving strangely - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK I was restoring this phone by reflashing it stock + rooting for my own reasons.
So I restored my +- 200 apps with titanium backup.
When I start my phone normally all apps would be visible (and on occasion they are and work fine)
The missing apps for as far as I know are located on SD-card Internally (not the real ext sd card) I think this is known as USB storage? (i used move to the sd card in titanium (but we know its not the real SD-card) Therefore remounting the EXT - sd card has 0 effect.
Anyway I dont know why these apps wont continue to show! I cant even find them anymore in application manager
what I do notice in application manager is Greyed out apps that say com.xxxxx.xxxxx and There are quite a few of them I believe these are the missing apps.
How can I restore these greyed out apps? (notice sometimes they are working fine!)
Thanks.

Delete them and restore with out data. Just the app. See if that helps.

Bump! dont know what is going on!

Go back to stock and restore apps with playstore. See if that helps

I delete adobe flash player it was greyed out. Nothing changed? Restore with out data what u mean?

Some of these apps arent from playstore...I use blackmart too and modded google playstore. BUT this problem was before I installed this modded google play store so its not about that.
How would this help me?? I cant restore like 40 apps 1 for 1.. some have really weird name in storage too! hardly recognisable.

Same here mate but you can't restore apps and data with titanium bkup if you have used say 4.3 and you restore apps and data on 4.2.2 you will end up with problems. This is why I've said restore apps without data. Once restored reboot the phone and should be ok. That's what I do and have no problems

Question about Restoring with Titanium Backup

I have just recently downloaded Titanium Backup in order to save my apps because I want to try new ROMs that say to do full wipes including EXT wipes. I was just curious what the proper way to use the program to restore apps was. Also, if Titanium Backup saves to your sd card and you do an EXT wipe, won't that delete all of your saved data? How does it restore? I hope this question isnt on the forum somewhere, I tried searching and couldnt quite find the answer i was looking for.
Thanks for the help. You guys on here have been lifesavers.
Hi,
Okay so first Titanium backup will back up your system settings and your applications and does a fine job at it too! When you wipe your Ext2/3/4 partition all your doing is cleaning off any data held in it. This does not effect your fat 32 partition which is where all your stuff is (pictures, albums, films, ringtones etc) I haven't deleted my fat32 partition ever as this never needs touching really. Apps2sd runs from your Ext partiton so wiping will kill all your apps but this is where Titanium comes in and as it saves to the fat32 partition you have no worries wiping. Also suggest backing up on a PC, I do once a week and saved me a few headaches
Open Titanium and hit menu, then batch. This will bring up a list of options to 'Run' backup or restore. I would strongly suggest also to donate $3.99 for the paid version with the hyper shell.
Anything else you need help with?
Nope. Thanks man. I just needed a few things cleared up before I went ahead and wiped my ext. You were a great help.
No problem, glad to have helped
you say it saves system settings...
so i have about 30 ringtones set to specific contacts, if i wipe/flash a new rom.
restore using titanium backup. Will all those ringtones be set back to the proper contacts automatically with TTB? cuz its a pain in the *** setting them each new rom
i tried mybackup pro a long time ago and it didn't do this which is why i don't waste my time with that app. (that may be changed now, it's been about 8 months)
would I be able to Restore my backup if I have flashed a new rom without problems?
I'm having problems with Titanium Backup. I made backup of a lot of apps before flashing some new stuff to my Galaxy S, but now when I try to restore them it just gets stuck. At first there's that little window saying restoring, but that disappears and it seems like everything is fine. However, when I try to restore next app it just says that a process is already running and it stays that way until I kill it via Autokiller. The app gets installed so that's fine, but the problem is that I would really like to just run a batch-operation and not have to kill the Titanium-process for every app i have back-up of...
Any solutions good people of XDA?
check at the new version, it has an alternative restore mode that you need to enable for it to work on the galaxy s
Another restore question
I installed Titanium backup on my Galaxy S Captivate yesterday, did a batch backup of "all user apps + System Data" in the list it showed the bloatware ATT apps which I wanted to uninstall but with the option of reinstalling them if I ever needed to bring the phone back to ATT.
I did a test uninstall of one of the market apps and then did a restore and it worked fine. Then I tried to un installed one of the ATT apps, which worked but when I tried to restore it by clicking on the crossed out app at the bottom of the list, there is no option to restore it, just delete.
Did I do something wrong with the backup or am I not restoring it properly? my test worked fine so I thought I had it figured out but obviously I am doing something wrong.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks!
Similar problem with no luck at reinstalling Att apps. I accidently deleted google talk and now cannot download new apps.
I have a similar question to the OP.
If I use the Master Clear or whatever is called to restore my phone to stock...that is supposed to delete the internal SD Card so, if I were to copy the Titanium Back Up folder to my PC then copy it back to the SD card after the clearing is done...would that be enough to restore all the games and apps?
I have titanium backup stored in sdcard, this backup is settings/wallpaper, is possible to extract from this file only wallpaper, without restoring all backup to the phone??
My news app/widget not working on MY HTC DHD even after several reboot/restart. So I decided to back up the apps and widget trough titanium backup and uninstall the app+widget. After reinstalling the apps/widget. the news app is working again but the widget, I cant find it in widget menus when I tried to add it to home screen.
Any help appreciated.
Thx

Also have a question about this program
It's restores my apps great. Very happy about it. But when you have installed ur apps back.
When I go to the android market they are not listed in my apps.
Though when i go and look for the app in the store it says installed. Yet can't check the allow automatic update checkbox.
Hope I make sense???
So I can't update it basically???Or when there is an update it will show up in my apps ???
My SD card was fried last night... everything gone. Good thing I backed up everything onto my laptop last week. Got a new SD card and copied everything over from the laptop. When I go into TB app, it doesnt show what I copied over. SHows I have no apps in memory... I made sure to copy everything into the "Titanium Backup" folder in my SD card. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This happened to me as well. Go into the "more" option thru Titanium and select the Market Doctor. This should link your apps back up with the Market. Also, sometimes simply installing an app thru the Market and/or a reboot will get my installed apps to show up properly.
OK thanks. Will try it out.

Hope that worked, but just in case, there's another way. Once in Titanium, click backup/restore, and then scroll to your desired app. Long press the app and then click the option to "attach to market (forced)."
Market Doctor - Amazon Market
I installed a new ROM and restored my apps with TiBu. I was having some syncing problems in the Android Market so I ran Market Doctor. The problem is that I did not know to de-select the Amazon sourced apps so 47 of them got linked to the Android Market. I have since manually de-linked (long press) each of those apps solving most of the problem but they still show up in the Market list but under the 'Not Installed' section at the bottom. Is there a way to permanently break the link? I am concerned about having to deal with it in the future. Maybe re-run Market Doctor following the proper de-select process?

[Q] Problems with Backup & Restore

Hi I searched a long time and I couldn't find any thread with my problems ..
So here's the thing .. First of all I had a rooted 2.1 with JIT enabled ..
And I decided to go for the rom FreeX10 Beta 4 ..
So what I did was to install busybox and xRecovery and I made the backup via xRecovery .. When I installed the new rom I couldn't restore the data from the previous (2.1) because it said something about MD5 mismatch ..
Strangely my contacts were back in some way I don't know how, but all other stuff was gone .. So I installed everything again and I was fine with it ..
But then I started to get these messages with force closing a lot after rebooting the phone. And at last I couldn't even make a call because I couldn't get into the phone book.
So I read something in a thread about reflashing with SEUS to the latest 2.1 firmware and kernel before installing FreeX10 Beta 4 rom.
I wanted to save the trouble of installing everything again so I did a backup via xRecovery (now with the FreeX10 rom) and did everything all over again ..
Now with the installed FreeX10 rom I went into xRecovery and did an advanced backup (only restore data). When I reboot the phone I have no contacts whatsoever ..
So my questions are .. Should I do a full restore since it's a backup from FreeX10 rom? Is it possible to restore data from previous rom (ex. 2.1) into the new rom? And if I do the full restore, will I get the force close messages again?
**EDIT** Crap .. I flashed in the new market and when I try to open the app it force closes .. great!
Thanks if you're kind enough to read and reply!
My experience with custom ROMs is that if you start to get force closes and mysterious crashes, that the first thing to consider is the data. By that, I mean data that each app stores.
The first thing you can try is to go into Settings > Applications > Manage applications and clear cache and/or data for any "suspect" apps. For Market problems, clear the cache and uninstall updates. Reboot.
If that doesn't work, then it's best to reflash, but DON'T do an advanced restore on your data. It's important to know that when you flash, nothing on your SD card is affected. In order to make things easier, there are ways to back up and restore your stuff with your SD card without restoring any corrupt data:
- Backup apps with Titanium Backup (TB). When you restore them, select "App only" so that data is not restored.
- DON'T restore data for system apps (green or red apps) with TB. This includes call log, sms messages, etc.
- To backup your call log to your SD card, get "Call Log Backup & Restore" by Ritesh Sahu. It's free.
- To backup SMS messages to your SD card, get "SMS Backup & Restore" by Ritesh Sahu. It's free.
- To backup APN settings to your SD card, get "APN Backup & Restore" by Ritesh Sahu. It's free.
- Alternately, I think you can use "MyBackup Root" by Rerware. I haven't used this, but I've used MyBackup (trial) before, so I'm not positive. The root version is free (but the pro version costs money).
- To backup your contacts to your SD card, you can go into your Phonebook, press Menu, and select "Back up contacts". This will save them in a .vcf file, which can be used by custom ROMs and by the stock ROM.
You can also sync your contacts using Google sync (or SE Sync). This is probably how you got your contacts back automatically. I like this method because you get your contacts back right after you sync for the first time, and you can log into GMail (I use my PC) to edit your contacts. There's a useful option called "Find & merge duplicates".
Also, you shouldn't restore data if you're moving between Android versions (e.g. Eclair 2.1 -> Froyo 2.2). It may even be a bad idea to restore data going between different ROMs on the same Android version (e.g. FreeX10 beta 4 -> CM6.1.3). That's because the user apps (not the system apps) are stored in the data partition, and you'll lose anything that's been customized for that particular ROM. It may or may not work.
Thank you for the help I should keep that in mind in the future ..
But I think I found my problem .. After a while I did a reflash doing everything EXCEPT for data2sd. And it worked fine ..
Just now I tried to flash data2sd in and that's when the force close happens on market .. I have tried to clear the cache and the data for the Market application .. Doesn't work still ..
**EDIT** And also on top of that .. All my apps disappeared when I flashed data2sd
I solved it somehow ..
Reflashed the whole thing in the "right order" ..
First the rom, then google apps, then data2sd .. and the rest after that and it worked somehow ..
Nooow the only problem is when I'm downloading new apps or restoring the old apps I had backup on via Titanium ... I don't get the offer if I want to move the app to the SD card anymore ..
Can it be fixed?
Thanks

[Q]can't execute non-system apps after restoring from recovery backup

My phone is LU3700, which is one of three korean versions of O1, and I don't think it differs a lot from P500 in this situation.
The recovery is ClockworkMod recovery v3.0.2.4
I backed up three times, and deleted former two backups because I was lack of space in SDcard.
All the downloaded apps and updated system apps such as market or helper won't be executed.
When I try to execute a problematic app, it says "Application is not installed on your phone"
In the settings->applications->manage applications, the list of apps is still there, and for each app Data/Cache are also there but Application isn't(0.00B)
I guess it could be just a simple problem like permission or configuration?
Even if all the applications are really gone, I can re-install them so it's not so big deal. I just want to save the time to install them.
Is there anything I could do in this situation?
P.S. Maybe there was too small space in the SD card when the third backup was made...I think I saw a message saying the backup was completed but I'm not so sure.
Oh, it IS a big deal since I can't use even market or helper(i frequently use it)...if not it's not possible to restore, could anyone teach me how to backup those data?
this happened to me too. i think that the part of the app that is located on the sd card got deleted (if i remember correctly, these "parts" should be located on /sdcard/.android_secure, which, for some reason, does not show its contents on the phone but only on the computer, at least for me). you can always backup your apps using titanium backup and i recommend keeping only one backup at a time so you dont get confused between each one and also for the sake of space. or, instead of using titanium backup for your apps, you can make a nand+android secure backup in recovery, which also does a backup of your app data (i think)
you can confirm all of this by plugging in your phone to the computer (usb mass storage) and check the /sdcard/.android_secure folder
edit: and as for trying to restore, if theres nothing in your android_secure folder, then you have to start from scratch (unless one of your nand backups was a nand+android_secure backup)
I'm afraid that's not the case. it is not only App2SD apps that aren't working right now. they used to work without SD before.
Flash the rom again. Start everything again.

Restoring apps using titanium backup

I been trying to figure something out without any luck... hope someone can help...
When we use titanium backup to restore apps , then why arnt they shown in the android market...?? Like when you go to my apps all those restored apps arnt there and you can't update them... individually if you go to the apps it shows them installed and gives the option toupdate update but if you try to do so it gives an error...
Is that normal... or ia there any way around this...?? I had an issue like this with my SGS and now am using a Moto Atrix with the same thing... thought its about time I ask...

After restoring apps I always reboot and I clear Market application's Data & Cache.
My apps always show up in the market app after those steps.
Try this.open titaniun then go into backups and then menu (on your phone) choose 'more' and select market doctor.it replaces market links with reinstalled apps.

TIBU wont restore system apps
hi, TIBU wont restore apps,
I did a full system + app backup, then I transferred the contents of that backup folder from my sd card to my macbook, I then deleted the backup from my sd card, leaving just the empty TIBU folder on the sd card.
I then proceeded to un-install some bloatware like twitter, weather, facebook, HTC Hub etc, (thinking I was safe because I had a full backup on my mac that I could transfer back into the empty TIBU folder on my sd card and re-install).
so, I transferred the full system + app backup, from my macbook, back into the empty TIBU folder on my sd card and turned on TIBU on my phone.
TIBU CAN SEE the un-installed apps, they are gray font with a gray line through them, also they have an orange smiley face next to them, when I click on them, they give me the option to restore, so, I click restore and a gray box appears with a circle inside showing me its doing something, this would stay like this for hrs if I let it, it does not restore and I have to reboot my phone to make it stop.
I thought my transferring of the data from sd card to macbook and back might have corrupted something so I experimented: not leaving TIBU I made a backup of calculator as this was a system app in red font, I then uninstalled it (same gray font + line), then immediately tried to restore it again, NOTHING, just the same problem as above. what is the point of TIBU if it won't restore system apps, I've searched the web for a solution to this gray font and line problem. for such a big app I'm surprised theirs not more info on this, I'm at a dead end, some of the apps I un-installed are not in the market. I have not installed a new rom after root, all i did was download go launcher and changed a theme, sorry for the long sermon, i just wanted to explain fully, is there no way to get these apps back on my phone, there just sitting on my macbook in zip files,,,,,,thank you

It is never advised to back up or restore system apps as it can cause huge issues or not install as there are extra files need to run the system apps that don't get backed up or need other system apps to run. The point to TIBU is for backup up user apps not system apps.

I believe that the free version only backs up system data, not the actual apk file. So you can restore the data (if the app is installed), but you cannot restore the app itself. I could be wrong about this though, I paid for the pro version before the feature to back up system apk files was added. Before that, even the paid version could only restore system data but not apps.
If you're wanting to remove the apps to restore later, you can either pay for the full version and freeze them (or back them up), or you can use a root level file explorer (I suggest Root Explorer, but there's a free one in the Android Apps & Games section) to copy the apk to your SD card and then uninstall via Titanium Backup. When you want to reinstall, you'll have to move the apk back to /system/app and set permissions to rw-r--r--.
If you have the Pro version of Titanium Backup, or if that feature is available in the free version, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. You can also try an older version of TB, they're available on the developer's website.
If neither of those help your problem, it could be an issue with your SD card. Try backing up the contents and formatting the card. It's best to format through your recovery or from the phone itself, but you can do it from your computer - just be sure to format to FAT32. The developer is very helpful, try contacting him if you still can't solve the problem.
It is not recommended to restore system apps or data across roms, but you should be fine if it's on the same rom (or possibly a variation/update of the same rom).
Good luck, hope you get it fixed!

Cannot restore system apps using Titanium Backup

I have an SGSII, rooted with Odin/CWM 4 and I cannot restore any system apps using Titanium Backup - it simply sits there saying 'Restoring App' and nothing happens. Normal apps can be restored OK. I tried changing the app processing mode in TB to Auto/Indirect but it didn't help.
Any ideas? I have TB Pro FWIW.
Can't you just restore systemdata? I assume the apps are there already.
ps you know the downside of restoring system apps?
I backed up and then uninstalled some system apps using TB Pro (TpLauncher, AccuWeather, etc.) but now I'd like to get some of them back. I assumed using the TB restore option was the way to go.
What's the downside of doing this? Can I restore these manually?
Same happened to me, I guess lesson is don't uninstall sys app unless you really don't want them.
Glad it's not just me and I have a nandroid so I can get everything back but it's annoying. I've reported it to the TB devs. If they come up with a solution I'll let you know.
I use root explorer backup the system apk, restore it when need it back.
what i do, is close titanium application then restart it again. then viola.
seems strange ... TB Pro always do the job for me
FWIW these were apps I first freezed, then uninstalled (without unfreezing). I wonder if this is relevant. Perhaps the permissions are screwed or something. If I could get a TB log I could find out. Hopefully the developers will help out.
Bump. Any updates on this? I'm having the same problem
Here is my reply from Titanium Backup support:
"We're sorry, system apps are critical and should not be removed in the first place. Some apps are tightly ROM bounded, while others are dependent on other system entities which could break things when they are removed. We have already provided the warning in the preferences that you will be held responsible of your own actions upon removing the system apps and we will not provide support for restoring them back. In most cases like this, you will have to reflash your ROM or restore your nandroid backup (you must always keep a nandroid handy)."
So in other words - tough sh*t! Not what I was expecting.
I restored my Nandroid and now only freeze apps, and they seem to defrost OK but after that reply I'm wondering if I should continue to use their product.

In fairness they are right, anyone who uninstalls system apps is asking for trouble why would you want to do that in the first place, you can simply freeze any apps you don't use instead, i have most of the Samsung bloatware frozen in Titanium as i don't use them and many of them are responsible for excessive battery drainage.
BTW Titanium Backup is probably the best overall app in the whole market and they always release updates, i highly recommend this app to anyone who doesn't already have it.
As a software developer myself if one of my apps didn't work correctly and a customer asked for help I would do my level best to get to the bottom of the issue instead of fobbing them off.
The app lets you uninstall system apps and restore them again - why would you want to? because on some devices space might be at a premium - I freed up 100MB on my previous device (Xperia Arc S) using this feature for example - which made a big difference.
Luckily I don't need the space on my SII but I'm surprised that the TB devs wouldn't want to find out what the issue is.

They know what the issue is. The outcome of removing an restoring system apps is just unpredictable. They gave a warning that it could cause unwanted results. Messing with roms gives unpredicted results.
Same thing happened to my Galaxy Pocket. I uninstalled system apps and can't restore them.
THE solution is wen u want to uninstall an system app den first of all make an back up of DATA of that system app and den go 2 loaction of app through root explorer in internal storage and copy that APK file to ur sd card as backup .
den delete the APK file mannualy or uninstall using titanium backup...
wen u want dat app again den copy the APK to its original old location of system /app and restore the data using titanium backup and just restart the phone..
hope it helps ...
Yes, I can restore system data

To be more thorough:
I am able to restore system data of an app but I can't restore an app.
In fact, if I locate the apk which titanium backup had backed up with a file browser and install it manually, it works fine! I can then restore data with titanium backup.
Issue on my Galaxy SII (no matter what ROM I use)
You shouldn't be restoring system apps at all/you shouldn't need to (the data may be another question though). Why are you wanting to restore system apps/which apps in particular ?
