Ridicilous battery drain on CM and AOSP roms - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All Cyanogenmod roms over 10.1, aosp, aokp roms make my battery drain so fast that I can't even get a half day. 1 to 2 hours of screen time only. I don't have this issue with sammy roms. I did a full wipe (even the internal sd) with some scripts i found before then flashed the roms normally also tried different kernels but nothing worked.

Same problem here but I think it has more to do with exynos sources. No sources, no CM love.

First of all, in my experience, Samsung TW roms got a better battery life than AOSP/AOKP, whereas for instance SlimBean + GoogyMax now gets me around 24h with around 2h screen on time (on average).
What you could you is, if you did not do already, use BetterBatteryStats to identify the part that is draining your battery.

Yes. Aosp roms do drain battery faster. You can do nothing about it, it depends on the rom, even though some people do report they get good battery life on specific aosp roms as well (these are almost never CM or PA though, especially PA).
So, it's rom dependant for the most part. Try flashing a different rom...

[Q] Best kernel for CM7 nightlies

Hey guys,
I finally installed CM7 a few days a go (nightly #74), and I'm very pleased with it. The only downside, really, is the battery life. It's usable, but it drains at least 40% faster than Samsung-based ROMs.
Most of the power seems to be going to Cell Standby. I hear some of the custom kernels can improve things a lot.
Could those of you who have experimented with different kernels give me a good recommendation for a kernel and/or modem release which will work well? I just don't have time to spend hours digging through hundred-page forum posts these days...
Thanks in advance!
Glitch is good. Battery will be a bit better with a custom kernel but it still won't be as good as Froyo. Just the way it is.
What's your cell standby reading? Percentage of battery use? Also of android system and OS,?
from the amazing Jets Bread
i recommend NEO 9 v5 it has great battery life and its really smooth it comes with led version and no-led
When I ran CM7 Nightlies a while back I always stayed on the Stock Kernel. I guess that since Kernels aren't updated "Nightly" like the Nightlies you shouldn't use other ones. Just my personal preference.
Stock kernel is more stable but other kernels give better battery an there much smoother

[Q] FoxHound VS ResurrectionRemix

So as usual, our device has many fantastic ROMs available and before I continue, I wanna thank every awesome developer that takes the time out to work on them and make users that much happier with their SGSIII's.
With that said, I've been trying a few JB AOSP/AOKP ROMS and I wanted to get some user input on two particular ROMs (though you can mention any other ROM as well if you wish).
I've personally really enjoyed using ResurrectionRemix 3.x.x and FoxHound 1.x.
I wanted to know what your experiences have been with these two ROMS (in comparison to eachother). Pros/Cons, general comments, etc...
The things im looking at are Battery Life, Consistent Performance, Buggieness, and overall satisfaction.
Any comments would be appreciated! =D
Thanks!
PS.: Please also mention the kernel u used when running each ROM, for the sake of thouroughness.
I'm using RR and running Siyah latest dual boot 1.7RC kernel
I would like to say that I experience Good battery with WiFi or data On for nearly 12 hours and I could get 15% or less battery left at the end of the day. With heavy usage I forgot. This ROM is very smooth for me and I experience no lag.
I have not tried FH ROM thou.

Yeah that sounds roughly the same that i've been getting with RR and Siyah 1.7rc1. Although sometimes it would be more like 19 Hours of normal-medium usage, and sometimes it would be 10 hours for same usage. Sometimes it feels a little like it has its own temperaments. lol.
Stefan, I realize you are just asking for user input, but this is basically asking which rom/kernel combo is the best. Which comes down to this:

[Q] Battery life STOCK vs CM10.1

Hi, just wanted to know if i have the same application, the same usage with CM 10.1 and Stock lastest Sammy rom, which would give me more battery life ?
How much aproximatively would it be different if so ?
Samsung would be better.....10-20%
I keep reading of people using the phone while browsing for +4h of screen or surfing the web for 2h on 4G and still having 70% left of battery life.
This is all stock ROMs. From my usage this would be impossible, I'm using cm10.1 and on 3g I could probably go to 2h screen on but that's it.
I'm starting to think that maybe aosp roms don't even come close to stock ROMs (which I never tried though).
Some experiences between roms and battery life?
Yeah I agree that stock seems better than aosp based. Even using similar kernels (perseus on stock v devil on aosp)

yes.stock is better

Best non-TW base rom for battery life?

I miss the old AOSP roms I became accustomed to on my Nexus phones (Specifically AOKP). The last time I tried any (about 2 months ago), they couldn't begin to compare with the TW base (stock modified) roms in terms of Battery life. Well, today I about had it with my TW rom, so I was considering giving AOSP another try. Has anyone found a stable one that can still give me 6-7 hours on screen time?
All AOSP ROMs will provide about the same battery life. Pick whichever you like, CM will be similar to AOKP, Pacman, etc. The same goes for TouchWiz ROMs, they will all offer more or less the same battery life. Not sure you'll get better battery life on AOSP than TW, but no one AOSP ROM is going to significantly better than another with regards to battery life.

My experience with the non-TW roms is that they (counter-intuitively) provided significantly worse battery life. I was hoping that was because of their relative immaturity at the time I tried them ( a few months ago). Since I am not the sort that likes to switch roms every few days, I was hoping some people had some recommendations as to which had finally improved their battery life to be on-par with the stock based roms.
They are all going to be relatively the same. As one ROM includes fixes, it propagates out to the others. IMO, CM10.1 is probably going to be the most "mature" as that is likely where most of the updates come from, but if you're looking for a bug free experience, it's likely best to stick with TW.
Carbon has same battery life for me as touch wiz ROMs. However it does use the trinity kernel. The only aosp ROM that does. I'm running it still to this day. Like it.

My opinion probably doesn't mean much, but Carbon is my choice for AOSP. I've seen it pull about the same screen time for a battery charge as my Beans12 load. To each their own. :good:

[Q] Battery life on Touchwiz vs AOSP

I've read that Android 4.3 improves battery life.
Would flashing an Android 4.3 ROM such as AOKP or CM10.2 improve battery life over a Touchwiz 4.1.2 based ROM?
I'm not sure because Touchwiz ROMs are usually optimized for this certain device unlike AOSP ROMs.
I've tried many different ROMs and I've noticed that most of the time, 4.1.2 TW ROMs have better battery than 4.3 ROMs.
What's your observations?
You can achieve the same battery life on aosp compared to touchwiz. I wont recommend any kernel or rom here, since most likely it wont work the same way for you. I actually never even used touchwiz for more than 1 day. Currently im testing it though, since development on cyanogenmod for our s3 is kind of inactive. So far Im neither inpressed nor disappointed by the battery life of the tw rom. Its very similar, maybe a little worse compared to my aosp setup. Unfortunately you often need to test rom, kernel and modem until you find your best combo on aosp. Thats why many people complain about battery life
