Hello, ladies and gentlemen!
Now that I have finally got my hands on a YP-G70, it's time to start developing for it! For my first project, porting AOKP! If you're like me, the default customisation options are not enough to suit your needs so you turn to a custom ROM. AOKP is my first choice when it comes to customising my device. Since there currently exists no JB AOKP ROM, I have taken up the task of porting it myself. (Hopefully, I will not have to resort to building it from source!)
It will most likely be a long project, and I could not have been inspired to take on this task if it wasn't for the awesome developers working on ROMs. Any help along the way would help this project work out!
Step 1: Finding a good ROM to port from.

U rock!
if you could develop would help. I'm taking classes, until then I'm just tester
Looking forward to this!

If I can help you perhaps, the best rom to port from would be a rom with simillar hardware. You can go search for the nexus s or the galaxy s I9000 as they've mostly the same hardware as the SGPs 4.0 and 5.0. Still I recommend building from source for optimal quality.
I was hoping this would not be the case but I have set up a Linux box for building just in case. Thanks, I can spend the next few days off from school working to get this started!

Moved to General for now, when the OP is full of development, will be more than happy to relocate!

I'm just curious who these seasoned devs are in here. I'm trying to see where this is going cause right now I see two paths: a really useful resource or a super duper kangkit/get rich quick scheme.
Until then I'm off to cook some food, not a rom.

I'm envisioning a multipurpose/variety thread. The likes of which never before seen. A thread so historically consequential, that the once elusive trade magic, some only hinted of in the fables of yesteryear, will be exposed, explained and made the standard. Oh yes, I'm with you when you say, "sounds much too important for just one dev to endure singlehandedly!" Which is why I bring you, the thread which will overclock your kernels 'till they pop ............................................................TOP ROM N' COOKING WITH YOUR HOSTS, DUDE AND KING!!
My mom says hi
I'd really like to see this become an active source of information between developers. A place where even some of the best can learn a thing or two.
Anyway... stepping up:

Creator of the various VillainROMs on the HTC Hero, capable of more than file moving and winzip, luckily.
I'll help out in here as much as possible to help get things moving!
@Cyanogen; Great introductory thread
I'm no mod, but I do have some priveleges.
Let me introduce myself.
Most of you won't know me for my efforts on Winmo i guess, since this is Android Chef Central. I worked with the best guys on creating a driver(pack) for Windows based MSM7XXX devices.
Now, I'm helping out XDA as much as I can.
Pleased to meet.
I am jcarrz1, an activist in the community and a fairly basic rom modder, etc. that looks for unique roms/bases and ideas for my creations.
not anything special, mind you.

Hey man, your graphics driver packs were more than appreciated for my Diamond / Touch Pro / Touch HD ROMs! They made a difference.
BTW ... I'm dsixda, who got his life stolen away after starting on the Windows Mobile 6.x Onyx ROMs for the Elf/Elfin ;-)
Now that I'm on Android I really want to get back to doing actual development work. (I don't think writing Mortscripts for my ROMs count, do they?) However, the stock Android ROMs in my opinion are useful enough for my day-to-day activities... I'm just a file pushing guy for now ;-)
I am charansingh. Just learnt how to build cyanogen mod from source, Have been building overclocked kernels for personal use lately just for testing. Now digging into cyanogen mod source to see if i can see something interesting to learn, edit and make something new. Lately i edited setting in the camera to allow unlimited video record time kind of. And will be doing more as a get time to do it
Keep it clean guys!

Hey thanks man. I'm glad i've helped out people with my packs. I'm new to Android so i won't be much of a help in the graphics department, but I hope to help out as much as I can to get the best out of our snapdragon chipsets.
LOL
Warped420 or Michael, started the LEGION MODZ TEAM. Learned everything I know about building from PlayfulGod and Junkie 2100.
Built a JellyBeer $ROM$. But no visual until we used Hroark13's legacy mods.
I made a Tutorial on XDA.
Always here to help
Edit. I really should slow down and read. I'm not a mod

Hi Guys,
i love Android and the things you can do with the awesome OS. But there are always new questions about MIUI, AOSP, How to flash a rom...or which ROM is the best, how to do that and that.
So, because of that i want to start a project which exactly go for this kind of questions.
I'm into android customization for about 4 years and - i think - i also know a lot of technical stuff (it's my job).
The plan for the first few weeks is focus on ROM testing and then continue with customize-how-to's and so on...also developing OR what the community wants.
It's just an idea - i think it would be great to get a few guys or girls together
Cheers
~I do sincerely apologize if i posted this in the wrong thread, kinda was torn between general and Q&A, but Q&A seemed more fit according to the forum rules.~
If you aren't already aware, there is a hybrid rom floating around varied devices. The rom isnt a hybrid between say ICS and JB, but rather a hybrid of cm10, aokp and paranoid. If you are curious about the specific details, just search XDA for PAC. Im trying to get back into porting, and maybe even back into developing roms, but i dont want to step on any developers toes, or over work myself. I think I would love to try and tackle this port and bring another JB rom option to us all, but i need to know if it is even worth my time.
My question is simple, Is the photon community interested in a PAC-Port?
Please, answer the poll, and if you have any added feedback/comments/questions, simply reply to the topic and i will be sure to read it through.
I would greatly appreciate your feedback, and with any luck, i can start working on it as soon as next week.
Thank you all in advance for your feedback/input!

*now if i could only get up to the developers required 10 posts* :silly:
I'm interested.
We had another community project for the Photon lead by Th3Bill and Jokersax called Kitchen Sink that was based off of CM9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603595
What is project kitchen sink?
Its cm9, miui, cna, and aokp in one installer with all the options, tweaks, modifications, and changes you could ever want.

ah yes, haha, i miss that. Here, look at this link to get a better understanding of the rom. i think you might have it a little confused. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32482802
Pac, is one rom, built from multiple roms.
PKS was multiple roms built into one aroma installer.
hope your still interested.
The more roms the better I say.
Seems how I flip back and forth between cna aokp and paranoid I could definitely live with and love all the options in one ROM.

Ah, cool. Of course I still am.
of course that is a good idea thats what i exactly need option of CNA with AOPK mixed with those of CM10 and phablet of paranoid
i even tried some porting myself
Well awesome. it seems that everyone would be interested in the rom. im getting everything together, but i probably wont have it started till next week. i wont give an eta due to my schedule(in college, working, taking care of my fiance) i might need surgery, so that could delay things as well, but im excited to tackle this project and finally contribute to the community.
On another note, if i get it up and running, i may decide to add in an extra rom for kicks. So instead of just pac, it might be pacc or pac-x. Thanks for your feedback. if you have any suggestions or added feedback, feel free to post your replys. I am following this thread, so i will be in touch.
Wish me luck!
would this be available to only unlocked phones?

Yeah. This would require your phone to be unlocked and rooted. This is because the roms it will ne built from require an unlocked bootloader, and a lot of the features require root access. Another note to everyone; I do not use gsm, so once this rom is up and running, i may ask for help specifically for gsm debugging for those in need of gsm.
Hate to like bump the thread at all, just wanted to update on progress.
The majority of the rom is ported over. Having a few problems as far as it booting and staying booted, got a boot logo starts, and then loops, so still a WIP.
On a side note; i wont be working on this rom for a bit, My hours have been doubled at work, and i just got in a wreck today( im not at fault ), car is totaled. So
a) i need time to recuperate
b) needa figure out car situation
Sorry for the delay folks. After im feeling better ill be starting up again, and maybe putting in some more time into it.
Thank you for your patience, ive been having a lot of fun working on this rom, and so when its up, i will be maintaining it as long as possible. =)
Time for my good friend bengay. lol
happy pre-halloween!

My sincerest apologies everyone. If you are not aware, Th3bill has released PAC. I just wanted to thank everyone for their feedback as far as interest in me porting PAC over. I couldn't be happier that bill made the rom. I think it is best left to those with more experience and who aren't so rusty. I had a lot of fun working on my port, but due to the circumstances i was not able to finish in time. This all being said, this topic is now closed. Have fun everyone, and happy holidays.

Hello XDA,
I just recently got into compiling from source, and wanted to share what I've learned to XDA of course.
I've noticed a lot of tutorials on ROM Development with kitchens, but in my opinion you're not getting anywhere near as much control of your ROM then if you were to compile from source yourself. I'm not bashing kitchens at all, because they're great for fundamentals of ROM Development. Learning the basics with kitchens is how I started, but I wanted more control. So I've been doing a lot of research and figured I'd give back to the community.
This is a series of tutorials, with this one being the "Basics/Introduction". I've also been getting into Kernel Development, so if anyone wants me to make another series for that as well please let me know! I would love to hear some feedback on this letting me know if I'm wrong on anything (because I'm definitely NOT an expert on this) or any constructive criticism for the next video(s).
If I get good feedback I'll continue making videos for this, and like I said, maybe for Kernel Development as well. :highfive:
tl;dr
Code:
I'm fairly new to ROM Development, I tried my best to help people out who are attempting to learn compiling from source to have more control over their ROMs. [B]Please be gentle![/B] ;)
Thank you for this, dude! It's easy for a beginner to get overwhelmed by the mountain of information out there about ROM development, as I've recently found out. This is a great little tutorial, consisely showing the stuff you really need to do whilst explaining the reasoning behind it.
Can't wait for episode 2!
+1
Go for the video tutorials:good:
I really liked it, waiting for new videos :good:
Hi Nick Mast,
Can you give me your text file named As_I_Go.txt in this video.
Thanks so much.
Thank You
Please continue making more. This was very helpful.

Need help on custom build
Hi @d0wngrade,
We are still waiting for the other videos in the series.
Thanks in advance.
I've just reinstalled Linux in a Virtual Machine and I'm syncing the Android 5.1.1 (latest) branch now. I'm going to watch part 1 and record a video where I left off. I don't know how long it will be, but it will be coming soon-ish. After the sync and some initial setup I'll be ready to record, so watch for it!
Folks, I'm just getting started here. Five minutes of Googling and my head is spinning already. Could I get some help with narrowing down what I need to learn?
My goal is to take the CM11 or PA or PAC source and then port custom features/mods from other ROM's over to it. And strip out stuff I don't need/want. Specifically what I want most is to port some Quick Settings Toggle mods from Slim over to a CM based ROM that I like a lot.
Could you help me by pointing me to some the bare learning essentials?
Android 4.4.4 is the goal. I have no plans on going to Android 5 anytime soon.
I'm not a programmer. I've just modded a couple of scripts here and there.
I have a basic familiarity with Linux.
I have VMware for virtual machines.
And I have a Samsung Infuse to play around/learn with.
Thanks!
