Having trouble skinning...

Hey guys. I am sorry if this isnt the right section.
I am a iPod/iPhone user who got a G1 (it was cheap ... I like to build skins and skin apps. SKinning Android seems to be a difficult task cause of 9patch pngs... I need help... I wanted to perform a simple task of editing the Status bar to make it look transparent and I have been scratching my head over it since a week. I use APK Manager to Pull/Decompile the framework-res.apk...
Now I get the status_bar_item_app_background_normal.9.png and open it in photoshop... I see the black guides and I dont touch them... I select the stuff between it and cut it via a layer and decrease the transparency (visibility)... Merge the layers... for the sake of it I open i in draw9patch.. save it.. and use the xUltimate Draw9Patch compiler... now when i drag the compiled image back to the orignal location and Compile the app in APK Manager and I push... I don;t think I need to sign it as it retains the sig in APK MAnager... now the edited pic doesnt work...
Does using MetaMorph make the process easier???
Is there a way to preview my pics on the Android Emulator?
Skinning for Android is pain in the ass... if someone helps me out here, I'll release a kickass theme

[Q] wallpaper folder

Hi all, wondering if anybody could help me!!
Google has turned up nothing so far so im gonna ask away!!
I am currently using nobodyatall's cm7 2.0 on my x10mini and am wondering where and how I can save pictures that I want as wallpapers.
Basically I don't want wallpapers to show up in my regular picture gallery, I want them only to show in the wallpaper gallery when i go to change wallpapers.
Is there a folder on the SD card or the internal memory, or is there a way I can open an APK in winrar or whatever and drop the pictures in there?
Regards
A
There are two ways that I can think of for you to do this. First, just create a folder in your SD card labeled wallpapers (or whatever you want). Then place all your wallpapers there.
Easy way: Use QuickPics. It has an option to hide a folder from the gallery. Just long press on the folder and you'll find the option.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder
Still easy (just not automated):create an empty file in your wallpaper folder with filename ".nomedia" without the quotes. This will prevent the gallery from scanning that folder. This also works to prevent music files from showing in the player.
To change your wallpaper, if using QuickPic, just press your menu button > show hidden > enter the folder and click the picture > use as wallpaper. If you don't want to use QuickPic, use a file manager to go the wallpaper folder then select your picture from there.
Great sugestions, especially the hideden folder option, however what I'm looking for (I wasn't quite sure how to explain this properly before!!) is to be able to add images directly to the menu of wallpapers like when you long press the screen and it gives you options to change the wallpaper I get a list of options, cyanogen wallpapers, gallery, live wallpapers, wallpaper gallery and wallpapers.
I would like to be able to add wallpapers directly to one of these menus, so I'm looking for the folder in which they are all kept in. I found one in one of the internal apk's, but i'm not sure if I can just inject them into the apk and also whether i need to include thumbnail size png's as the ones included with cyanogen seem to have these to.
Thanks for a great comprehensive reply. If all fails, I'll be looking at the hidden folder option!!
Cheers!
That's a bit harder. Sounds like it shouldn't be but it actually is since you'll be modding an apk. Here are a couple of links to get you started if you're really interested in doing this:

Thanks man, some great info, the first post really hits the nail on the head, I didn't think of checking the other forums (duh me, it's all android!!)!!
So it looks like I will have to take out the launcher.apk and recompile it after editing the xml file that contains the details of the names of the wallpapers. I'm guessing this is some sort of framework xml for the purposes of creating the horizontal table that you can swipe across to view the previews of the pictures.
This makes sense I guess, loading a table reather than using up memory to load a gallery style viewer that indexes the pictures seems much more streamlined seeing that is only for the use of wallpapers, however I do like the wallpaper gallery style that the xml framewrok brings.
I guess I'm going take the newer(and some older) wallpapers from other cm roms and rename them over some of the exisitng files. This way I shouldn't have to delve too deeply!!!
Thanks again for the help and info leftAlone, you are a star!!!

Theme "Manage Applications"

What is this app called? I can't find it. I got settings.apk inverted but when I click on manage applications, its not inverted so it must be a different app.
no one knows? Im going to have to start decompiling apps 1 by 1 til i find it? lol
I Doubt Anyone Can Help With A Vague Question. I See Manage Applications, Theme, And Inverted. Can You Give More Information About What Your Seeking?
I am using the Droid X2 running Eclipse 2.2. I have themed the settings.apk file. All is well except when I click on "Manage Applications" from inside settings. This tells me that Manage Applications is a separate app than settings. It just shows up in the settings menu. Much like Angry Birds would show up in the App Drawer even though its not part of appdrawer.apk.. or whatever its called.
I am trying to find the file in system/app that controls "Manage Applications".
That there is about as specific as I can get.
Xkape, where did your inverted theme go? Since our recovery requires ac power I didnt want to chance an outage with Irene doing her thing.
I love dark themes and the inverted theme looked awesome. Hopefully you pulled it to tweak something, unless I am completely blind and I'm just missing it.
jeremy, i never posted it here. I did at Droidforums and at rootzwiki. But, now I am updating it to 0.4 since that came out today. Eclipse I mean.
I will post it here but I am waiting on something that hasn't happened yet. When it does, I'll post it.
I know what you want!!! I know what you want!!!!! You want to theme the application manager from the settings menu!!!! Settings>>Applications>>Manage Applications right???!!!
you are RIGHT my friend!!! I see the xmls in the settings.apk but I dont see where there is anything to edit. I assumed it was another app but now I just think I am overlooking something.
Unfortunately I just figured out what you are talking about but know way too little about how to do what you want.... Sorry...
Bump...anyone figure this out yet? Im trying to change text colors in manage applications on eclipse .2.2 because its white text on white BG
Yeah I got it figured out. I didn't see the code in the xmls so.. I just made my own. Works fine. you need to add android:textColor="#ff000000" if you want the text black. Stick any code you want in there though.
What xml's did you use to change the text color for the app name? I have look over manage_applications and manage_applications_item and found nothing. In manage_applications you can change the text color from black to white but that is only for Application Storage and Internal Storage located at the bottom. In the running section everything turn out perfect but not in the downloaded, all and media area have black text.

[Q] How do I add custom icons in GO Launcher Theme Factory?

Hello all,
I'm using the latest version of GO Launcher Theme Factory, and I've made a theme with around 30 icons, but I can't seem to add custom icons for other apps that aren't in GO's list. For example, I want to add a Nexflix icon for my theme, but I can't because when I double click on the add custom icon button, GO wants me to open an .apk file, not an image file. If anyone knows how to add a new icon to the list where it's actually an image file, or if anyone has an .apk file that I could download to my comp that has a bunch of custom icons listed (I'll make my own actual icons), that'd be great.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Bishop
Same problem here
Hey Bishop, Have you found the solution to this by any chance? I'm stuck with the same problem. :/
Thanks in advance!

[EDIT - 5 mins later... lol]
Just figured it out. Gonna put the solution here just in case any one else comes upon this thread:
The .apk refers to the .apk of the app whose icon you would like to customize.
So say, if you wanted to create a custom icon for Minecraft Pocket Ed, you'll need to add "Minecraft_Pocket_Edition_v0.1.2.apk" to GO Theme Factory via Icon Exchange> App Icon > Add/Delete App Icon > Custom Icons > "Add".
A dialogue box that says "Parsing" will be on screen for quite a while, then the icon will be added!
Can't believe it was so simple... dddduuurrrr (◔ ◡ ◔)"""
How to add a biggest icons to the theme? Like in Glass theme? Not 72x72. Something like 86x86 or even bigger.
icons don't change on device for some phones
Hello, when i try adding custom apk to add icons i get parsing error every time! Becausr some icons like music and downloads etc don't change with preset icons in the exchange. Thanks in advanced!
Making a new GO Theme Factory thread
Hey guys I have been going through the process of making themes on GO Themes Factory as well and think we all need a new thread where we can all come together and help others/ask questions. It will be under the "Android Themes" section.

Changing SecPhone and SecContacts background?

I would like to change the default background colors of these files from the bright white to a darker color. Can anyone point me to the right files to do so? I have decompiled the SecPhone.apk but am having trouble locating the file for the background.
Thanks in advance

Here you go bro. Unzip and go to the vrtheme folder, navigate to system apps, and the png files should be there. I'd imagine these have everything, as I've yet to see an image my phone could throw at me that was a horrid white. There are hundreds of the dang things (and the names appear fairly self-explanatory), which is why people whom theme apps kind of blow my mind. I get the patience part, but the shear maddening level of updates would drive one to acts of horror.
Wish I knew how to do what you're doing. I have read that some feel this pair of apps can be a pain to recompile. That file should flash on any DeOdex rom which you may be running.
