I'm looking for feedback now on what people would like next.
Pocket SMS V1.06 (Alpha) is available.( removed the binaries)
V1.06 takes some of the processing off the phone and moves it to the desktop so the performance is so much better.
Just added PocketSMS_Smartphone_105.zip This contains a totally untested build for the smartphone.
Install the PocketSMS_SmartPhone.Cab on your device. You may need to install the inthehand.mobile.2.1.cab too.
Pocket SMS is a desktop SMS Manager designed to interface directly with Pocket PC Phones.
Key features:
Full Backup of All text messages
Chat history by Contact
Send Text Messages from the desktop
Distribution Lists for sending Scheduled text Messages
Folder Management
Telephone a contact
Instructions
For Pocket SMS to work you must be connected via Activesync or, for Vista users, Windows Mobile Device Centre 6.1 (or better).
The software comes in two parts: the desktop Manager and the pocket pc client. You must install the PocketSMS.Cab on your mobile device and the SMSManager.msi on your desktop. In addition if you have not already installed Compact Framework 3.5 on your mobile then run NETCFSetupv35.msi on your desktop to do the installation. You can doenload the Compact Framework here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...37-A62F-4A6E-9727-7791BF4CC2BD&displaylang=en
The first time you connect, depending on the performance of your phone and the number of messages in your SMS folders, Pocket SMS can take quite a few minutes to “look” as if it’s working ….. be patient.
Your Contacts can be downloaded by using File\Synchronise Contacts.
You can view all the contacts by double clicking on "Contacts" in the view.
You can create as many Distribution Lists as you like and Lists can contain more lists or people. You can drag and drop people or messages into any list.
I'm adding more features as I can and still trying to improve the reliabliity.
Let me know what changes you would like.
Regards
Pete

Hi
I'm writing a free desktop SMS manager that will allow you to:
backup SMS messages onto your desktop.
Send texts from the desktop.
Dial a contact from the desktop.
Reply,Delete, Move folders.
View texts by contact.
I would also like to add MMS messages but have failed to get anywhere with them. I have contacted Arcsoft but the very nice VP of Sales wants $200,000.00 for his developer kit.
Has anyone had any luck in interfacing to the Arcsoft MMS?

Thats very interesting!
keep on the updates !!
Well, regarding MMS, what you "could" do, is call the pocket pc composer via a RAPI call. Other than that, you'll definitively need some kind of SDK, since the MMS service is not a standard one.
Wow, I can't wait infopete
That sounds like a great app you are working on, even if you cannot get the MMS portion to work. Please let us know when the app is ready and how we can obtain it. I'd definitely like an easy desktop means of backing up my SMS messages. I always hate having to lose them when I do a hard reset. Keep up the good work and thank you for your efforts.
Pete,
If you are gauging interest for this app then I, for one, am definitely interested. Looking forward to it, especially the backup facility.

SMS manager
Hi,
Peter Foot of inthehand fame is hoping to do something with MMS. So I may be able to extend the Manager to MMS later in the year.
The second alpha release should be by Monday. The xda-orbit guys gave me a big list of "wants" while I was on holiday and I'm working through this before the next release.
If you have any definate requirements (other than the obvious) let me know.
Pete
Just wondering, doesnt SOTI PocketController do all the things you have mentioned from your phone?
You just go to create an SMS when your connected and type it in with your keyboard - the keyboard inputs it on your phone via your computer.
Maybe im missing the point of what your trying to do?
SOTI
Hi
Soti is an excellent tool, I use it all the time.
I agree the functionality I'm offering will be much as you get on the XDA.
But this way you can delete messages off your phone and keep a history on your desktop.
Plus the interface should be quicker and of course much much bigger.
Pete
SMS Manager Alpha release
Hi,
the next alpha release of SMSmanager is here. It's not finished so some things don't work. However, I'd like to get it tested and have some feedback before I go much further.
I have attached a zip file. Unpack it. Copy the cab file to your phone and install it on the device. (not the storage card). I had to do a soft reset on mine before it appeared in programs. Do not start the application.
Then install the desktop application and launch it.
If i've done my job right the desktop application will launch the pocket application and they will start to chatter to each other.
All your texts and contacts should appear on the desktop.
If you have any problems email me
I've tested it on an Orbit and an Exec.
Regards
Pete
Now that is really cool, it crashes alot on vista, but if i stay in the inbox all the sms can be read fine.
there is a strange horizontal bar that i keep managing to grab with the mouse and its only once actually resized anything.
When trying to send a txt i got this error
Unhandled exception has occured in your application
I clicked continue, it crashed
anyhow...this is only the 1st alpha, and you proved it works, if you want me to post the full error i got when sending lemme know,
I can see this app evolving into what has been needed for years
As youve got it setup, ive had nothing to do on the ppc app, can this just be turned into a system tray icon, as we dont really need to see it and some options could be configured there. could it then also close itself when disconnected? after all you only have to open the pc app to connect in again.
10/10 on the concept here tho, very small, very simple, and it kinda works
Will save so much time when im already at a pc that i sync with, ie home machine and work, i have partnerships with both.
I love it!!
Is it possible to make a version that is embedded into Outlook as an extension/addon ?
vista
B***** I thought I had solved the Vista issues. I'll try it later to see what I get. If you email me the errors and any screen dumps it may be uselful
The Pocket pc application will eventually be hidden. I keep it visible at the moment to make sure it's working and to keep an eye on it. If you minimize it it should carry on working.
What xda are you running it on?
Pete
Pete,
I take it that your tool is device independent? If yes I would be happy to test it on a Hermes/Tytn running WM6. Desktop is XP/SP2.
Let me know.
Cheers
WB
Hi
or the last two questions:
Yes I hope to create a pluin for outlook and live.
I have tested it on an xda exec and orbit and my colleagues on other devices.
It's supposed to work on anything but that's what bill gates says.
If you have specific problems let me know.
Pete
Thanks - Outlook extension would be awesome =)
Goodjob and goodluck w/ the updates, will be looking for them!

seconds i get an error. Installed in main memory and softreset already done twice.
i know, this is alpha, so i think this is a good information for you ?
Anyway, this app seems to get a great tool...looking forward to the final release.
Great work, cheers

Pete,
Re te ability to send SMS to multiple contacts, it would be good if the tool could:
- Have the ability to send an sms to multiple contacts by putting ticks agains the names to be included on the sms distribution list, taken off the full list of contacts. What I mean by this is that you would select the names you want to send a message to off a list drawn directly from Contacts by simply putting a tick against selected names.
- Do the same but be able to select a preset distribution list (so I guess the tool needs tha ability for one to be able to create multiple distribution lists and store them for later use).
- Work the other way round, with the ability to send mutiple, differeing sms to a single contact (hope this is not too challenging, from a development standpoint)
- Text sent using this tool must be stored within the Sent box (I have used other tools that don't do this and its a real pain trying to remember what text you sent and to whom).
- Have the ability to move/refile texts into different folders.
if I think of any more I will let you know.
Cheers

hey guys from prophet forum!
had started this service out to TYTN users and figured i should spread the news around to some of the other boards. if you guys are looking for push email, please get in touch here's what i posted in the tytn forum:
I'm now offering exchange mailboxes to users (subscription based service). right now i see two, one by austindkelly in the wizard forum (he's disappeared for over a month and looks like he doens't offer his service any more) and one by denial in the kaiser section ($5/month). I thought I'd offer up a similar service starting with the hermes group (cheaper of course) with a few extra tidbits of joy...
- supports iphone exchange services, saves a heck of money over apple's mobileme service!
- outlook web access (with the advanced interface)
- 1gb quota
- both SSL as well as standard port options
- *IMAP access* - you don't even need outlook, syncs flawlessly with your phone.
- *MAPI* outlook access - hook up your outlook on your PC to sync with my service which in turn syncs with your phone. no plugging in ever needed!
- alias included (get your own email)
- changing your password through outlook web access (one-way non-reversible encryption).
I figured it's a bit of an overkill having my own exchange server that's serving a single account (i.e. mine). so why not open it up!
Price is $10 for 3 months, $19 for 6 months.
Please PM me if you're interested... I'll probably set up your account within 12 hours (probably less).
And yes, will give you unused credit money back etc etc if you're unsatisfied for whatever reason. I'm really not in this for the money, it's more to utilize something I spent hours building up, plus to cover the costs of my internet / server hardware.
And, as usual, if you need any files hosted for xda-developers just let me know, i'm already hosting over 40 ROM images and serving 5-6gb/day in ROMs from the wiki!
cheers!
free accounts:
will provide 10 rotating free accounts at any given time for test purposes, will base it off of usage. so if you use the free account, i'll keep it up indefinitely, if not then account will be removed after 14 days and given to the next person in line.
Free accounts have 50mb storage, and have no alias, and no MAPI access...
Depending on utilization I may increase this 10 free account limit.
two account requests from a couple of hours ago have been set up - please check your PMs
few people are asking about synching from multiple sources...
from my understanding i can only give you one alias for your accounts, which means you can't select your "from." however you're free to forward as many accounts as you wish to the account i create for you, but you can only send from one "alias."
another multi-synching thing people are asking is whether you can sync calendar with your desktop and email with my service. sure!! its best that way in fact - that's what i do. i have my outlook on my desktop which has my calendar, contacts, and only sync my email via push on exchange to my server... you can even take this a step further and set up IMAP access so what you see in your email client is the same as what you'll see in your pocket outlook... if you delete from your desktop, whoosh it disappears from your PDA too
this is stupid, why you people just sign up in gmail.com and start using all of the above, even better for free???

MAPI (i.e. desktop outlook) access is now enabled
still plenty of resources to use up so drop me a line if interested!
Hi chameleon. I have sent you a PM - I am keen to give this a try. I have read through the thread in Hermes section. Glad you have MAPI sorted now.
Clearly Zeroed doesn't understand the power of Exchange Server!
I read that you are using Exchange Server 2003. Do I presume you have it patched with SP2?
Thanks for providing this service. I will comment here how it works out for me as a Prophet user.

hey richard!
account set up check your PM. yep, using ES2003 with SP2.
quick note: MAPI will be a subscriber-only feature, but i'd be glad to enable it for the test users (PM me) for testing purposes.
cheers!
going to take the server down for about 15-20 minutes this afternoon for a quick reboot and offline backup. planning for 3:00pm GMT. please be patient, hopefully it should be done much much faster!
Hi friend,
Any chance you would be upgradin ExServer 2007 in the near future?Would like to try that out...
hi there,
won't be upgrading to exserver 2007 unfortunately; my hardware doesn't support it
quick question - has anyone here managed to get this to work with outlook '07? if i recall someone had, but someone pointed out that they get an error message saying that this version of outlook has been blocked by the administrator, which just isn't true
updates: outlook '07 started working - user discovered you just need to enable cached exchange mode.
i also have a couple of trial accounts left for those i turned down last week if you're still interested, shoot me a PM
Quick update regarding update in the server!
I know I've had some VERY avoidable downtimes this past few months. Because this is running on a laptop it has been unplugged from the power / ethernet while its been moved.
however good news! I've just purchased a replacement - a nice server
Specs - dual core AMD 5600+ with 2 gb RAM, 820gb storage (for those attachments ).
i'll do the switchover soon as i get the machine, should hopefully take 10-15 minutes as i just need to image the drive across.
once i get the machine i'll push up the trial accounts to 15 or 20 so if you're interested i'll post here when the migration is done and you can drop me a note
cheers!
been getting a few PMs recently about whether i still offer this (maybe its the iphone crowd finding a cheaper alternative to apple's crazy crap service!).
yes i do and i think users can attest to the fact that since the upgrade to the new server been up and running at 100% since june!
drop me a PM if any of you need service. and yes, it is compatible with the iphone - i use it on my iphone too.
quick note - yes there was a 3 hour outage between 5am and 8ish am on saturday; sorry about that. seems my ISP went down, given how short the outage was and how this was the first one in god knows how long i didn't bother spending 1/2 an hour on the phone with them figuring out what the issue was will chase it up if it happens again though!
can someone who has successfully set up outlook 07 with my service PM me with the settings they've used? i need to get some instructions on my site on how to do it, and i don't use exchange 07 myself...
thanks!
UPDATE Now offering Exchange 2010 accounts - fully compatible with latest outlook, html email etc!
Information and registration at https://exchange.etbox.info
Please read these 5 ideas I have and then make a vote to the app you would love to use the most and would most likely donate towards serious (and opensource!) development. If you are unclear about anything, please ask before voting! Thanks.
1. Better FaceBook Sync - like BookSync, but instead of being restricted to Facebook's ToS it would use the html interface to additionally sync these infos:
* Sync all friends photos with captions tags and comments for offline browsing.
* Phone numbers
* Email addresses (yes, I am aware it's a .gif)
* Addresses
* Facebook Events (and Friends' events)
* as well as profile pics (high res), date of birth (for birthday reminders), name (girls who marry update on your phone instantly)
* option to only silently sync when using wifi (and of course, only updates get pulled down)
2. Better Lock - replace the default WM 6.x security lock feature where you enter a PIN every 24 hours or so, with a much more friendly AND more secure version:
* Incremental Challenge/Response: Have your PIN as 8 or so digits but every 12 hours or so (configurable) it will ask for just 1 digit ("Enter the 4th digit of your PIN"). Enter it wrong and it'll ask for 2 digits now. Wrong again.. 4 digits and so on. Additionally, every 24 hours or so, ask for extra digit.
* While locked, allow for basic functions such as wifi on/off, email/text/call anyone already in address book, turn device off, allow reading of texts that contain a magic password (so owner can communicate with "thief").
* Button to show owner info (incase it's lost) with sub-button to call owners emergency contact number
* 3 invalid attempts = phone texts and calls emergency number and/or integrates with RemoteTracker
3. Better Marketplace - like Microsoft Marketplace and AppToDate merged with improvements
* Microsoft Marketplace requires each dev to upload and maintain thier app (never gonna happen with 100% esp abandoned but still useful apps)
* AppToDate is abandoned? Last update 2008..
* Allow free software only!!!!
* Allow trusted mods to upload apps on behalf of devs, making this BetterMarketplace very comprehensive
* UC compatible & allowing user to record installed apps to our server so after hard reset you can enter user/pass and automagically get all your favourite apps installed
* Compatibility Matrix: only apps that work on your phone are displayed (eg, qvga/vga and wm5/wm6 and so on)
* Popularity Contest: rank apps based on usage in total minutes. This way, only the truly useful apps get to top of list
* Install via web.. using your user account, you can click to install from the Web interface... and your ppc will amazingly start to install it! ppc application interface will exist too ofc.
4. Mobile Proxy - a http proxy on your phone that modifies your web experience via plugins ideas such as:
* Google Maps Mobile - allow supercaching.. which means remember map segments forever on SD card. Perhaps even precaching your area.
* Windows Live Messenger - allow use of MSN when offline. I often turn my phone on/off often and drives friends insane as they see me go offline..online..offline..online. To solve this, this proxy plugin could re-route MSN protocol via our desktop computer so that a) we can sign into multiple locations, something the ppc app doesnt support yet and b) we can receive and view messages we missed while ppc was offline, same for sending msgs could be queued.
* Ad blocker, flash blocker, javascript blocker
* Send custom headers to custom http servers (to fake/force mobile or desktop view per site)
5. Email Redefined - not too sure about my competence to pull this one off though.
Instead of receiving a torrent of email to my device, half of which I don't care about, separate emails into 3 distinct channels:-
1. General crap. When received has no notification, not even a number next to the titanium email plugin.
2. From humans not in my address book. New senders get an instant reply asking them to complete a captcha if they want my mobile to buzz.
3. From friends who are in my address book. I would get a sound played, much like a 'new SMS' sound, and titanium would show "1" next to email.
* If possible with Mobile Outlook, treat facebook inbox-messages as emails.. so buzz, play a sound, and allow reply (via fb).
* If possible (might cost the user), add email push facility whereby the phone receives a hidden SMS text when you have a new email worthy of a beep/buzz, wakes up (but with screen still off and device locked), connects to data (wifi/3g, as configured), gets the email, then beeps/buzzes.
Better Facebook and Marketplace definitely! Those are a must!
Can't decide between Marketplace and Proxy. I LOVE your ideas for marketplace, but I've been wanting to sign into multiple locations since I've had IM on my phone. I hardly ever sign into my IM's because of it. I think I'm going with Marketplace with Proxy being a close second.
Bump (1 of 2).
It would be useful if some of you could post a reply like the above 2 people did too.. as it seems voting in a poll does not bump this thread.. (a forum bug imho). Also useful if anyone can point out competition (free or payware) to each and any of my ideas, unless already mentioned. Thanks!

Better FaceBook Sync all the way......
Hi all.
I'm close to completing my first ever app and I really need some people to test it out for me, which is proving very difficult!
My app, called 'attigo' (a Latin term for 'I have arrived') is a simple app that will remind you to send a predefined message to selected contacts on your phone when you get to a predefined destination.
In this initial version, you will get a toast notification if the app is running in the background, and when you open up the app, it should create the message automatically for you so all you need to do is hit send. Future versions of the app will feature automated messaging, but that is not included in this version.
Currently there are a few minor bugs that I need to resolve, which I should have done before the end of the weekend and I'm hoping that by then I will have some email addresses of people to sign up to the beta to test over the coming week.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!
Send me your MS email address via PM and I will get you signed up!
Thanks,
Steve

Is there a way to not allow this to be done without uninstalling the TweetCaster app? I checked in the app's settings and I don't see any way to stop or not allow updates. I do have Google Play's settings at "Do not auto-update apps" - would this be sufficient? Or may Twitter go behind everyone's back and do this independently through their app and bypass Google Play? I do not want Twitter to be able to identify what apps I have or otherwise have access to my S4 to "target ads" to me.
Please note I Do Not have the Twitter app, I have TweetCaster (if it's different than the Twitter app? I don't know?) I heard facebook was doing this same BS & people deleted the app (I Do Not use FB) and am looking for a way to not allow Twitter to do this (if there is a way to). Thanks (I don't believe the last line below)

Twitter Plans to Peek at Your Apps to Serve You Targeted Ads
Twitter will soon identify the other apps on your phone in an effort to personalize your experience on its service—i.e. serve you targeted ads.
The company discusses the move on its website, and according to the news site Re/code, this sort of tracking will begin with a new version of its iPhone app, set to roll out on Wednesday. A new Android version that works in much the same way will roll out over the next week.
Now a public company, Twitter is exploring many different ways to boost its revenue, and one method is through better targeted ads. The company already has some personal information about those using its service—what they type into their Twitter profiles and the tweets they post—but now, it wants more. “To help build a more personal Twitter experience for you, we are collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that you might be interested in,” the company says.
In this way, it’s following the lead of Facebook and Google and so many others that seek to target ads. The difference is that Twitter doesn’t have access to nearly as much personal data as Facebook, which inherently encourages users to provide information about themselves, or Google, which operates a wide range of services atop its own mobile OS. So Twitter is reaching out into other parts of the phone, something that is easy to do. The Apple/Google mobile OSes provide ready access to information like this & many apps take advantage of this—some going much further than others.
Twitter says it will point users to its new data policy, via an in-app notification, before it starts collecting any personal information. But the new update is opt-out, which means that in order for the company to stop gathering data on your account, you must explicitly turn this data collection off. But few users are likely to do so.

Twitter says it will point users to its new data policy, via an in-app notification, before it starts collecting any personal information. But the new update is opt-out, which means that in order for the company to stop gathering data on your account, you must explicitly turn this data collection off. But few users are likely to do so.

I think Tweetcaster is a third party application just like Falcon doesn't have anything to do with the default twitter app. .Or you can just see if that option is listed their within the Tweetcaster application to opt out of it.
