[Q] questions about updating to ME7 from MDK - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have always deferred the ME7 update and I'm running the MDK. I have ROOT with TWRP recovery. I'm done with the ROM seen. I do like TouchWiz and have been running and always go back to the stock ROM.
My question for all you pro's is, if I accept this deferred OTA on the stock ROM (im running now) (I know it will break root) will it have trouble overwriteing the TWRP recovery? Also, do I need to uninstall SU?
To make a simple question...what will happen if I install this update?

If I was in your situation and wanted to do that then I would odin back to stock and start fresh. I like the cleanness of doing it that way. And it would wipe root and replace your custom recovery with stock. You could always unroot manually and flash the update, it should overwrite the stock recovery. I could be wrong though, im speaking from experience on the s3. Thats how it worked. Or you could always flash a stock rooted me7 rom. Thats what im running because I too generally return to stock because of the stability and im one of the few that actually likes touchwiz.

What's "unroot manually"?

Using terminal emulator to remove the superuser files. There is an unroot option in supersu but I have never used it.

ended up just purchasing Titanium Pro and freezing SDM.apk and that did the trick on the annoying OTA reminder. I also figure I will keep root and TWRP on, that way I can flash any new Google Edition Roms and or new TW roms

[Q] Rooting/CWM interfere with OTA Updates ?

Hey guys,
I am not new to the rooting or CWM scene but I like to double check these things with different phone models just in case as I do not want an expensive brick, especially with the S3 as I am looking to get one of these bad boys.
My question is, If I root/Install CWM will this cause issues with OTA updates or updates through Samsung Kies ? Or once an Update is installed would I simply need to re-root and install CWM again ?
I was taking a look at this thread and it bought my question to mind: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
I would for now like to stick to the Stock Roms and just want to be aware of the consequences of having Root/CWM and Updating my phone.
Cheers guys.
If you root, your device status will show as "Modified," and you won't get OTA updates.
Not a big deal as long as XDA is up and running, IMO. You'll get update here faster than you'll get them OTA anyway in nearly all cases.

Ahh right, what about CWM ? As you say, even if I cannot Update OTA or through Kies I can use Odin. I guess I just need to find out about installing any updates with CWM installed, Though I should imagine nothing will happen as the stock recovery would be put back and I would simply have to install CWM again but any further info would be great
Thanks !

If you use desktop Odin to flash, you'll lose the custom recovery and be reverted to stock recovery. You'll likely need to relfash the recovery again as well as root, unless the ROM you flash via Odin is pre-rooted.
Mobile Odin will allow you to flash the tar file and keep root, recovery, etc. 99% of the time, I use mobile Odin for stock ROMs these days.

[Q] Skipping the OTA?

Howdy yall,
I have a rooted/unlocked DNA, and for the last month or so, I have been getting OTA notifications for HTC6435LVW_2.04.605.2-1.15.605.4. At first, they would come in every few days, i would just hit the back button and go on about my business. Lately, they have been coming in every damn time I unlock the screen, and it's annoying. I don't have the reject option on the regular popup, only Defer and OK. Is there any way I can just prevent these completely? Is everyone who has a rooted DNA getting these?
Thanks,
SoS

1) If your on the stock rom, NO unless you just download the rooted version and install, remember to back up your apps and files, pics, music whatever. The install will wipe your phone to like new but shouldn't delete anything on the memory card but just in case something goes wrong, back up everything.
2) install a custom rom (backup your stuff) then install the rom. most custom roms have a block so you are not notified.
Or you could install the stock recovery and just take the OTA. Then just put your custom recovery back when it's done. That's what I did.

I am on the stock ROM, I used Hasoon2000's All-In-One to unlock it, flash TWRP and root it.
Do you have any suggestions for a custom ROM? I'm not opposed to that suggestion, but I haven't used a custom ROM since my OG Droid.

Wouldn't doing that remove root?
Yes but just flash your supersu.zip after you put your custom recovery back and you'll have root again.

Ok, from my reading, I was under the impression that the update would basically re-lock the phone and that it couldn't be rooted after that. If that's not the case, good.
Thanks,
SoS
Never accept ota updates if your rooted and unlocked! It defeats the purpose.

The OTA will not relock your phone. The only thing it will do is unroot. All you have to do is flash your supersu again to get root back.

ME7 to MD5

If I flashed a ROM that uses ME7 and I want to ODIN back to stock, is it possible?
Or will I brick my phone? Reason I want to go back to stock is no matter what ROM I flash; every time I reboot my phone gets stuck on the samsung logo.
Answered my own question:
It does not matter...
If you are not on the ME7 OTA update then you should be fine odin'ing back to mdk
If you are on the OTA, then you are stuck with me7

The post above really answered your question. But just in case you need to be reassured:
On our device (at the moment), as long as you didn't accept the VRUAME7 OTA, then your okay.
I actually have a couple of questions for you (if you have the time).
Can you help me out by giving me a little more information about how your getting stuck at the boot logo?
I suppose you started out clean (with VRUAMDK) and then rooted your device and installed a custom recovery.
Did you root with SuperUser (new cwm opensource) or SuperSU?
Which recovery did you install and how did you install it (which method)?
Which VRAUME7 ROM did you flash that you think started your boot issues?
Did you install the VRUAME7 radio/modem as well?
If so, which method did you use for updating your radio/modem and which files were used in your method (and where were they from)?

Anytime I installed a ROM(any ROM), I would test to see if I still had this problem and I would reboot my phone. Upon rebooting my phone, it never got passed the samsung logo. ODIN-ing back to stock helped fix this problem and now it works. However now I have an issue where facebook and instagram does not show any photos.....any ideas?

Correct, I ODIN-ed back to MDK.
Did you root with SuperUser (new cwm opensource) or SuperSU?
SuperSU (motochopper SU script)
Which recovery did you install and how did you install it (which method)?
TWRP 2.6 using Goo manager then reverted back to 2.5.0.2
Which VRAUME7 ROM did you flash that you think started your boot issues?
Honestly, hard to say could be the nightly of CM10.2 (8/21)
Did you install the VRUAME7 radio/modem as well?
No I did not, do I need to update the radio/modem???
If so, which method did you use for updating your radio/modem and which files were used in your method (and where were they from)?
See previous answer.
Hope this helps

[Q] Can't get my phone to update

I've been on stock rooted ROM (MDK) for longest time w/ CWM recovery. I decided I wanted to get back on the update track after this recent update came out and is already rooted. I defrosted all apps, unrooted the device with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, and uninstalled SuperSU. I then flashed stock firmware with Odin as explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
This didn't work. I get an error during install every time. After this I noticed when going into recovery (now stock) it would have an error immediately but then went into recovery. It would not let me clear the cache (after searching this seems to be common.) So I then did factory reset multiple times (didn't help) and next flashed a stock firmware that wipes my data. This had the same results as before. Do I have a corrupt recovery of some kind? Shouldn't flashing the stock firmware fix this? Do I need to get a new phone? Help!

i dont think you can update with an unlocked recovery... if you have cwm you have an unlocked recovery and i dont think you can relock it.
also you dont need to update if you have cwm then all you need to do is flash a MI1 rom (once they come out) and youre good. there is NO reason you would need to ACTUALLY update. you can flash pretty much everything whilst still keeping unlocked recovery under actual MDK firmware but with MI1 (or ME7) rom kernel and radios.

There is no unlocked bootloader on the s4 what allows the installation of custom recovery is the loki exploit and its reversible.

There is no link or post on it really. Its a patched recovery and boot image so when you odin back to a factory image they get replaced with the non patched versions

Quick Qestion
I have a quick question, and i dont want to make a who new thread about it. But since we already talkin about it on here, is it worth it to do this Verizon update?? I just did a Verizon update 2 days ago. And now to me i think it just aggitated me. My Email are different now. My delete button moved and it added more buttons. And my task manager seems a lil different. Cant seem to put my finger on it.. But its weird. What else has changed? Was it even worth doing an update?

Update to Lollipop or flash another rom?

I've been having some terribly sluggish issues lately. Lagging when I text, browse the web, even listen to music.
I honestly do not remember which method I used to root, but I rooted & kept the stock rom. I just deleted the bloat.
Not sure if this will help
http://i.imgur.com/L9prnWv.png
I'm at a point where the lagging is really irking me, but I'm not sure which route I should go.
Since I'm rooted, can I just go ahead with the OTA update without any issues? If so, is there a method to root on lollipop?
If not...Should I just go ahead and flash another rom?
Don't take the ota! Follow he thread about upgrading to 5.01 keeping root! Totally worth going to LP. The speed is great! Give it a shot.

Did that, and it says i'm still on 4.4.2. Very strange.
I'm still getting the pop up for the OTA
Make sure to back up any data and do a full wipe to nc5. That can make a difference. Or, Odin back to nc5, and use the Echoe ROM or the Super6 ROM, both of which are on Lollipop.

This is all foreign language to me
Sorry.
OK, get a program called odin. It is leaked Samsung software that allows to flash stock firmware on your phone. You have to flash the stock nc5 firmware with this and THEN continue the upgrade to lollipop
Laziness and not knowing much has lead me to not doing anything about the issue until now.
The phone gets slower by the day, so it's time for a change.
I'd like to flash this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2550770 but i'm not too sure if I can flash this via the stock recovery?
If not, how would I go about installing TWRP? I did try to search, but the page kept timing out.
DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL TWRP. YOU WILL BRICK. Thanks to Verizon, we have a locked bootloader, which means we only have Safestrap and Flashfire. SS is based off of TWRP, but is a really really really gimped version. Flashfire is an app that functions like a recovery.
You cannot install that ROM at all, because of this POS bootloader.
What you CAN DO, is install Roms such as Eclipse,Kitpop,Hyperdrive, and Stang's 5.0.1 ROM.
OR, you could do the OTA with root method.
