Sim card in my note 3 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hi guys,
I went to best buy today and got my note 3. When I got home I found there's a sim card already put in the sim card slot. I am puzzled, last time I see this was on my touch pro 2, and I was told by sprint customer service representative that the sim card in my touch pro 2 was actually a gsm sim card for the purpose of international roaming. That makes sense, so I bought that story.
When I look at this sim card in my note 3, I'm wondering what is it used for? Since I believe sprint note 3 uses embedded sim card to store cdma+lte keys I suppose this actual sim card in the slot is not used for that purpose. Could it also be a sim card used for international roaming? Or is it the case that the embedded sim card stores cdma keys and this actual sim card stores lte keys, like verizon phones?
Thanks for any input that could clarify this.
Cheers

Listen... I work for sprint .. that sim card is for international use .. How it works is .. If you have the phone active on your line for more then 90 days then call in to the international department and tell them u want unlock the SimCard . Then u can use the sim or take it out and use a sim card from another country

So this is just like the old days, a free useless international gsm sim card coming along with a new phone. Thanks trabent, you helped a lot clarifying my confusion.

The sim is also used for LTE on sprint.

It can be unlocked on day one. There is no 90 waiting. If it hasn't been on your account for 90 days they call you to ask you a few questions then unlock it. Put the unlock request in one day one then they called me back the next day to unlock it.

SIM card Slot can be used overseas!
I spoke to Sprint International services , they mentioned that I could use a local carrier SIM for voice and data as long as I used a 128 k sim card , also and obviously they dont guarantee quality of service of the local carrier !
Will update next week , when I hopefully will use a local SIM overseas...
128 k sim card. interesting.
yes, please keep us updated, i would like to know how it goes.

GSM?

So I've been reading on these forums that some roms don't have gsm working. Can someone explain what gsm is and what it does? Sorry for noob question.

"Global System for Mobile Communications"
This technology uses a small SIM card to contain the mobile phone details such as your phone number & etc. This allows one to swap the SIM card into another phone and have it simply work. The SIM card can also store a limited number of phone numbers. The technology is used everywhere in the world, but only on AT&T and T-Mobile in America.

Not sure to understand since I'm not in those carrier and I can swap my SIM card into any other phone and it will still work. I'm in Canada and this works for any carrier for all I know. The SIM also contains phone numbers and can hold a bunch of SMS.

I forgot about the SMS storage. Your SIM card can be put into any other GSM phone. It could not be put into a Verizon phone, for example.

Do I need a new SIM Card???

Hi,
I just got a new Note for my mom. She is coming from an iPhone 3gs. Do I need to get her a new SIM card? The customer service reps at AT&T said that I do not, but won't that mess up the speed of the phone and stuff like that? Just wondering.
Thanks,
Patti

It'll work , but not lte. I would get a new one. Of course they told me I needed a new one. At least At&t is consistent.
Yes, Lte requires an lte SIM, if you are in an lte area you'll need one to get the best speeds. If lte is not in your area yet you don't really need a new one.
All you need to do is look at the sim num and if its a 25 for 9th and 10th digit then ur good. If its less than that u need a new sim
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
My data wouldn't connect at all until I got an LTE sim. You can download the speed test app to confirm. Also, if you haven't modified it yet, the carrier badge will show what network you're connected to.

They tell you that you have to have the newer sim card no matter what, that is a load of crap. If you have an older simply you have to change the APN setting, but it will still work. Only thing that wouldn't work would be LTE

The 3GS used a standard sim card whereas the 4 and 4S use the micro, so it'd transfer over just fine

It is needed if you want to take advantage of all data speeds. Yeah you can aupposedly change your apn settings but not everyone who buys an lte phone knows about changing them. When 4g lte phones first came out so many people called in cuz they got new phones. Didnt want to use the new sim ao when the data plan was put to the correct one data still didnt work. Had them use the new sim and issue resolved. End of story

While we are on the topic of simcards (i figured better to ask here then make a new topic) I'm currently in the republic of Georgia and my host mother really likes my galaxy note. while Sam sung phones are very popular here the note is not here. if she was to buy a note online could be put a Georgian simcard in it? the guy at the at&t store before i left said something about the code not being unlocked yet or something so someone there would have to know what they are doing. i know there is a international version so if possible should she buy that person?
The international version comes unlocked meaning that it can use any sim card. I believe you can get it online for between 450 and 550 USD, but I've not looked at prices for a few months.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
The inernational N7000 version is just a little bit different than at&t i717 on the capacitive buttons area. But other than that she won't see any difference. That would be a sweet gift.
Ok thanks for all the replies. From what I have been told, she can keep the 3GS card which fits just fine, and she can keep her old 250MB data plan for now since she barely used any of that data with the iPhone. But I'm suspecting now that she can actually see the screen and she has been playing around with this phone more in the past week than she has with the iPhone in the past 3 years, I better upgrade her soon. Oh, the reason she didn't get a new SIM card, is that this phone was an insurance replacement for my old phone. And I got a new phone in the mean time while waiting (S3). So we are both happy, but I miss my screen real estate!!!
Thanks,
Patti

Straight Talk

Does anyone knows if the Mega can be made to work on Straight Talk?
I'd venture to say Yes.
As long as you are sim unlocked.
I'm using net 10 which is very similar. Just buy the prepaid cards from WalMart (no contract) and it does 4G just fine.

I think with Straight Talk you have to order the sim from their web-site
Then you buy the mins from Walmart
Walmart sells the Net 10 sim right on the rack
Called bring your own phone kit
Comes with a full size and a micro sim plus first month of service
I think I paid $65.00 for the kit
I activated it on a full size sim from another phone I was using at the time.
On the Mega, I had to cut the sim down with a razor blade.

No I think the reason they give you two cards is they try cover all the bases not knowing what device you have.
Only one card can be activated though.
One or the other.
You can buy two kits but it would twice the money and two different phone numbers.

Very true as when i got my mega from my carrier they gave me a new sim card which was part of the deal..basically a activation fee and my old sim from them was still good with the same number they put to my new sim card, and they told me that my old one will be no good to use even though both sim cards had the same number on it, but i tried my old one anyways and it was no good like they said..it said insert sim card, so no two sims cards can have the same number..would be cool but not happening. :silly:

Yes correct
GSM technology is very secure
I once bought a sim card replicator that promised to duplicate/clone any GSM sim card.
I wanted to do this so I would not have to keep taking battery/cover/sim card from one device and put in another then back again all the time.
I was never going to fire up both devices at the same time
(As that would cause a ripple in the fabric of deep space and a tear in the time/space continuum).
Anyway allz it did was destroy my original sim and I had to pay AT&T $20.00 for a new sim card.

Yes Sir
Definately a learning experience
A Radio Shack sales rep wanted to bet me $100.00 that it would NOT work.
If I were a betting man I'd been out another $100.00.
On top of the $ 30.00 I paid l for the cloner
And the $ 20.00 I paid for a new sim card.
Sometimes learning can be expensive
I offer if here for free.
I still think it can be done though.
Just not with that device
Anything man invents can be exploited
I just didn't have the resources to seek out someone who had the capabilities, equipment and knowledge to do it.
Plus no funds to keep buying new sims.
Ever since wifi tether came along there's no need anymore.

Sim Card Issues

I recently purchased a note 3 and I didn't have a sprint sim for it. I ordered one and inserted it but I still get the notification "No SIM". I've rebooted the phone and checked to make sure the SIM Card is in correctly. What do I do.

Either your SIM is bad or your reader may be faulty. I know sellers like to sell phones without the SIM in it to hide a failed SIM reader.

I'm fairly sure the SIM Card Reader is functional because I put a Verizon sim in originally to try to remove the notification. I will switch the Sims for my note 3 and 2. To find out if my sprint sim is faulty. I'm doubtful but best to check

OK just checked the sprint sim card is functional as I get a non Verizon sim notification in my note 2 and when I put the Verizon sim in the note 3 I get invalid sim so this means the sim reader is functional on the note 3 and the sprint sim card is usable. What's going on then

I'd still try another Sprint SIM. When you get the replacement one MAKE SURE TO TELL THEM IT'S FOR A NOTE 3!!! As far as I know, there's different SIM cards for different devices. A SIM from an iphone 4s won't work in a Note 3.

As far as I know, it doesn't matter. I could be wrong. But from my experience the SIM model number does matter. The model number varies amongst the various Sprint devices and I recall what worked for one phone didn't work for another.

So wait....you're trying to flash? It's unable to be unlocked to GSM. If you flash the device you don't need the SIM. The SIM is ONLY for 4g LTE. If you flash you won't get LTE, and therefore you don't need the SIM and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know how to flash the baseband.

You lost me. I just want the notification gone. I'm trying to use the note 3 as a media device not a phone as of now. If I could flash it might remove my error. I don't know if it's even possible. Not worried about the LTE till late when I may or may not use the note 3 as a phone. Data charges get me. But if there's a way to fix the sim issue with no flash that would be ideal. But if not its alright I can probably flash or try order yet another sim. Or try to find another solution.

You'd need to root the phone and get some kind of file explorer. It's not that hard. The most difficult part will be finding what to edit/add to the build.prop file.
Throw the Sprint sim in the trash...or burn it.

I had a problem with the SIM card from a Note 3 that I bought on Swappa. My problem was that my phone would not switch to 4G LTE. It gave me some EHRPD error and occasionally a no SIM card found error.
The way I fixed this is I wrote down the serial number off the card itself then contacted Sprint via chat support. The number on the card was different than the number Sprint had assigned to my phone. They changed the number to the number of the card I had, rebooted my phone and the problem was fixed. Now I have 4G LTE and no longer get a no SIM card detected error.
I suggest writing down the number from your card, contact Sprint via chat and have them change the number of your card to your phone. That might fix it for you. How this helps!
Why not just take a trip to the Sprint store. They should be able to fix your issue.
