Quick Dual Boot Question - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys, Im coming here and well modifying my phone after a long time..I have forgotten few things and just want to reconfirm 2 things about dual booting(as i want to install a new rom side by side). My current kernel is siyah 6.0vb5(the last beta produced for s2). I currently have alliance rom v9 installed which is based on 4.1.2. SO:
1. I wanna dual boot omega rom v24 which is also based on 4.1.2. I can do this dual booting legally right on my siyah kernel version?
2. How does the internal data storage work in case of both the roms? For example, i play temple run on first rom as well as on second rom, so will their save data be saved separately or will be shared?
Thanks for replies in advance

1. You cannot dualboot any jb 412 rom out of the box. It has to be modified but there are modded Roms ready to download. Dorimanx is the kernel for dualbooting jb Roms.
Here you find lots of Roms already prepared:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44449811
2. I think they have different data if they dont link to a server.

Not even if my first rom is a custom rom? Alliance rom v9 currently..
Edit: ok i got it, but i jist have 1 question now..For dual booting, should my second rom be dualboot modified or the first rom? or both?

If you want two jb roms both need to be modified since 4.1.2 uses preload where your second rom would be. If you have a 4.2.2 or 4.3 you dont need to mod it since they dont use preload.
In short: if you want alliance as first rom you must download it premodded and install it. Then you install premodded neat as second rom. If you would use cm aokp or pa rom you dont need to mod it. It works as it is.

Ok so u mean to say if i want to install Resurrection remix 4.2.2 as second rom,i can install it as it is right? No need to have either alliance modded or RR moded?

No you cant. Your alliance( IF not modded) is already using preload so you will probably mess up things. There is alliance v9 modded which i used as second rom. Works well. Dont know IF you can get ota downloads though.
I guess you have to backup your data with TB and wipe your current rom(make nandroid first) and install modded alliance. Make sure it works both as first and secrom first since with the thread i linked before. I always use 422 , 4.3 in first and 412 in second, because at first there wasn't 412 for first ROM so it kind of stuck. RR you can flash as it is. No modding needed.

Ota doesn't work on modded alliance rom. Also a good man to talk to would be @Troubadour666 check his links out. Dorimanx 8.xx Imo is best for dualbooting.

[Q] should i must have to change the kernel if i change the ROM?

hi guys,
i wanna ask you senious guys that, should i have to change the kernel each time if i want to change the ROM of my galaxy s II or any kernel will work with any ROM?
kindly assist me in this matter.thanks.
What type of Rom are you trying to flash?
Most custom roms include a kernel so you you will have to refresh back to your preferred kernel.
Or you can open the zip file and replace the kernel of your choice as long as it matches your firmware version, ie GB kernel for a GB rom etc.

let me add the screen shot for your help.it might shows the ROM and kernel and suggest me the best ROM and kernel for my galaxy s II.and tell me which ROM and kernel is best for battery life cause this kernel and ROM is just crap and sucks the battery.

any kernel may not work with any ROMs...almost all samsung firmware versions has got its own versions of Kernel.
In SGS2 normaly custom kernels are used for rooting your phone, like CF-root, whcih are made for almost all the samsung firamware matched kernels, you only want to pick the one matching for your ROM.
It is also seen sometimes advised to back up your Kernel, this can be done using a tool from Market called "Ktool", at a worst scenario, when your installed custom kernel giving you a treble you can restore the previous one.
EDIT : you are already on a custom ROM as well as Custom Kernel. both have got their newer versions alredy.
checkrom is now on V6, and Siyah kernel is now on v2.6.14
Well your still on gingerbread and an early kernel and early checkrom. There are many roms and kernels you can try the best for battery life us what works best for you and only you can figure that out with testing.
Try out an ICS Rom if you haven't done so already and there are now custom kernels for that as well.

I meant the kernel that is already included with the rom when you flash it. So just flash the rom and you don't need to install another kernel after it.
Here is a link to the Resurrection rom:

Hope this helped you
If you flash a rom it replaces the kernel you've been using with that of the rom you're flashing...
Soooo
Eg cm9 + siyah
If you flash a new nightly it'll replace siyah with cm9s kernel so you have to flash siyah each time.
Think that makes sense..!

[Q] Help with new ROM for SGS2

Hello all,
I am a super newbee in this field ( please dont laugh ) ! I apologise if i have failed to see the solution for my queries in other threads
I own a Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with the following config:
Android version : 4.0.3
Baseband Version : I9100DDLPA
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected]#3
Build number : IML74K.XWLP7
I have already rooted the device with the help of posts on xda. I aspire to put a custom ROM of Jelly Bean in my phone. I have certain questions abt it.
1. Can someone suggest me an apt choice of ROM to suit my current build?
2. will i be able to come back to my stock firmware incase of any problem with the custom ROM. If yes, how ?
3. can i partition my ROM and have to Androids running ? Custom ICS and JellyBean ?
Please help. Thanks in advance.
JB ROMs are still in development stages and need some time to get fully baked.
If you want to try one CM is great.
And you can return back to ICS anytime.
To dual boot JB and ICS you need to flash Siyah kernel.
I would suggest you to flash (install) CM9 for few days. Bcoz its better to be using known stable build for regular use. You will get an idea of what to expect of AOSP ROMS and what are their limitations.
Then you can plunge into exciting world of flashing nightlies (less stable) builds.
You can always go back to default samsung roms if CyanogenMod roms dont suite you. There are lot of custom Samsung rom based roms to choose from with very good customizations.
But before you do any flashing of rom, BACKUP YOUR CURRENT ROM.

Better flash Siyah first...

Flash the Zip from Here

yes u can keep ur current stock firmware(has to be ICS) as ur primary rom along with Siyah kernel version which supports dual boot (Ex v4.1.5 of siyah) and flash any Custom rom of ur Choice which has to be ICS or JB (do not ask which one though since its against XDA rules!) as ur Secondary rom and see
for backing up of memo u can try some apps from stores and see
I just flashed my phone with the Siyah Kernal...

Siyah 4.1.5 is not compatible with the latest CM10 (JB Mali version) and all JB ROMs based on this build. Therefore Siyah cannot boot it.

I had to do that bro...coz at mid night i was stuck and there was no response on this post.
Anyway, i had downloaded the 6th october build of CM10 from http://www.get.cm/?device=i9100
Like i got to know, the latest build might not be compatible. So, now I am downloading the 1st october build (thats the oldest nightly build available dats y)
Should that be fine ?
It might be. But I'm not a 100% positive. You could try n if you're not able to boot, then download another one of the custom ROMs built with a cm10 base available in the development section for now.until siyah is updated to include the new code.
Alternative is to flash the cm10 ROM and stick with the cm kernel for now.

I advise you to install Siyah kernel 1.9 it's let you combine 2 rom's personnaly I installed in First Rom a Samsung based rom like WanamLite; and in the second rom I install the latest CM 10.1 it work perfectly . however I still have issue after changing from the WanamLite Rom to the latest Omega 44.4.

Help understanding.

hey guys.
I've got a few questions regarding my i9100's kernels and ROMs.
I'm currently running dual boot RR Rom in primary on dorimanx v7.8 kernel, the kernel got updated to v7.8 when i installed M1UI ROM in the secondary ROM space. Both ROMs are 4.1.2.
I've tried to install the latest stable version of root box and paranoid android into 2nd ROM position. When installing them via cwm recovery I didn't get the launcher like with M1UI or RR, so there was no option to upgrade the kernel.
Paranoid android didn't boot at all after install and root box booted but the start animation was laggy when booting and once booted the system UI crashed with everything else. Both ROMs are jellybean and dorimanx v7.8 supports jellybean?
I'm guessing I'm missing a obvious compatibility issue.
My question lays with updating the kernel. Is there a proper way to update the kernel so I can try paranoid android and root box?
Should I clean/wipe both ROMs and caches, run a kernel cleaning script and install a new kernel (the latest version of dorimanx)? Then my current ROM will be incompatible?
Do I just got ahead and install a compatible rom (root box / paranoid android)?
Is this the right way to go about updating kernel to try new ROMs?
I haven't been able to find a guide on this subject. Leaving me with a small fear of fiddling with things I don't fully understand. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
Many thanks.

For the latest root box and pa to work you need say dormanx 8.xx. Do clean your system up with kernel nuke and rom nuke then flash rootbox 4.2.2rom to first rom then pa 4.3 rom to 2nd rom. I say 8.xx cuz if you want to use a stock based rom you will need 8.xx as this is for both stock and custom rom. 9.xx is just for custom. By all means if your going to run just custom the use 9.xx

How do you classify stock based ROMs and custom ROMs?
There are currently 3 versions of this kernel depending on your ROM type and firmware. v7 = ICS, v8 = JB/ICS STOCK,*** v9 = JB CM/AOKP ONLY

Flash rootbox then flash dormanx then reboot. Set up rootbox then bk into dormanx cwm an flash 2nd rom. Forget about dori 7.xx as it's old and out dated. That's for ics custom jb rom. Stock firmware is any thing that uses the stock base. If you want to run jb stock based rom it needs to be a modded for dual booting stock based rom.
Cm aokp pa custom roms
Ics jb firmware is stock rom
I9100/I9300
OK, I'm not planning on using any stock ROMs, as I don't like the Sammy stock ROMs. So I'll flash 9.xx?
RR, CM, PA, ROOTBOX. all custom ROMs?
If they ain't the phones stock ROM then its a custom ROM? Regardless if its based on stock android.
Sent from my GT-P5100 using xda app-developers app
So if you gonna use custom yes just use 9.xx
Cm aokp pa are custom roms.
Hybrid rom like alliance which is custom stock rom. Uses stock base but has aokp type features uses dormanx 8.xx to run. You need to read more about roms mate.
