sd card, legacy/"0" storage...confused - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm rooted running AOSP roms (switch around a lot, on Vanir right now). Confused about the different storages and what's going on with my sd card. My internal storage is getting close to being full while my (64gb) sd card has a little over 59gb left. When I look in Root Explorer it looks like everything is duplicated in sd card and regular storage. So, how can I move things to my sd card?

I am rooted, ME7 running Hyperdrive for a couple days now & was downloading some themes & wallpapers when I started getting a notification that my memory was almost full. I have had my SG4 for about 3 weeks now & as I am getting more familiar I want to do more but definitely hope someone can clarify this before I do. I am coming from a HTC Thunderbolt using 4ext recovery which was clear what was internal/external. Any help would be appreciated! I have been searching all day & have only come across 1 thread so for on this. It mentions that the actual external storage is data/media/0. So I'm really not sure how it's set up. My SD card is formatted exFat if that matters.

You can get to the external SD card at /mnt/extSdcard/
And the internal at /sdcard/
In root explorer.

[Q] ICS Passion v10 - External SD Card (BUG?)

Hello all!
I'm not able to post in the development forum (since I'm a noob with less than 10 posts ).
I just moved from the 182 CM7 Nightly on my Vibrant to the Passion ICS v10.
Everything is running pretty darn smooth and thing I thought i'd be missing from CM7 are not really bothering me.
The issue I'm having is with my 8GB external SD card. I'm getting the standard SD Card is empty of has an unrecognizable filesys.
1. I've tried formatting through Storage menu, recovery menu, blackberry and an adapter.
2. I've tried all the tricks on the forums.
The build is not recognizing the card for some reason. I plug the card into my Blackberry and its fine.
I took the 2GB card from the blackberry and put it in the vibrant and it immediately recognized it and mounted w/o a hitch.
Is there a size issue/bug w/ the external SD?
Have you tried taking the SD card and plugging it into your computer, and then formatting it from there?
EDIT: I just tried it with my 8GB microSD card. It looks like mine's not being recognized either.
I'm not running ICS, but maybe it just doesn't support that much on an SD? Just throwing out ideas and maybes.
That would be really silly. Not supporting 8GB SD card .
Kept trying a few more tricks. Still have the same issue.
Also, when I added the 2GB the internal unmounted. Have to go in and manually mount the internal after external mounts (just the first time).
This is a just a heads up.

Maybe ICS is just silly xD
Omg yes i have the same issue, but ive looked into it some more..
I have 2 128mb, a 2gb (that came with the phone) and a 4gb and 8gb sdhc of the same brand... the 8gb and one of the 128mb dont get seen (and the 128s are identical) ive tried formatting in fat16 and fat 32 and ntfs and even mac os x journaled lol and nothing worked... i then returned to cm7 and formatted from there... went back to ics passion v9.2 and then v10 and cm9 and ssame exact symptoms... so idk.. its not because of sdHC, it doesnt sseem to be filesystem and the 128mb thing just really blows my mind..
Hope we get an answer

im using an 8gb and it works just find. but to acces the files on the SDcard i look under "emmc" or "mnt/emmc" or "home/emmc" (depending on which file browser you use).

Obviously this question is turning to be a bug. There is confirmation from several users with the same problem.
I have a 4Gb micro sd Patriot and seems to be OK.
You have to look into emmc folder.
Wow , thanks for the awesome pointers that I should look into EMMC folder (sarcasm btw).
The bug is about the SD CARD NOT BEING MOUNTED and reporting as blank and having a non-supported filesystem.
The card in question works fine on the PC and 2 other phones one of the Vibrant with stock ROM.
I only want to help.
I understand your point but we want to exclude options. Can you try another SD cards in this same phone?

I'm also having this problem. Have tried multiple cards in multiple format options. None of them mount, it just gives me a "Damaged SD card" error notification when I try to mount manually. Freaking sucks I can't use my 32gb card anymore.

Have you tried smaller ones like the original 2gb that came with the phone? It should work for you
Btw, just general info, I fixed my 128mb with SD formatter program so that just leaves my 8gb unworking.. and sdformatter had no effect on the 8 gb

I had the exact problem mounted/unmounted I could still read on PC's. It seems this ICS can't handle symbols (external_sd, etc) in filenames - food for thought!

I have the same problem with ICS Passion with my 8gb Sd card.
I can see the files and open them but for an example, when trying to play them in the music player (google music or winamp) I can't.
Any Ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks...

New Note, lots of questions Part1

Got my new Note, this is my first droid phone, and I got LOTS of questions. I currently have the i717 version, unrooted.
1) Is currently is any reliable way to install ICS on the i717?
2) How do I check if there were any previous kernel or ROM flashes?
3) Is there a reliable way to root the device WITHOUT increasing the counter (assuming it is currently at 0)?
4) How do I move installed apps, which are currently under "System Storage" to "USB storage"?
I can answer all of your questions very simply. Search and read.
yep all ur answers are here just gotta read,

Ya from what I gathered, there is ICS for the international version. I have yet to see something for the i717.
I dont have an SD yet, I was referring to moving them from System to USB storage.
I will be getting as SD soon though.

There are two potential SD cards for the Note. One is the internal SD card. This is actually the part of the phone where you store your music and other files. It's the space allotted by the OS for storage. The Note comes with 16GB of internal storage, but 2GB is reserved for the system. You cannot access this for data storage. There is also a portion of the internal SD card that is used by the OS itself.
The remaining amount of storage is about 12GB. This is accessible through a file explorer such as Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, etc, and is located in the /sdcard folder. This is where any App2SD type app will move apps to. This is also where you store your music and other files like photos, etc.
The Note also has a slot for an external SD card. To access it, you take the battery cover off and right next to the SIM card, there is a little slot for the micro SD card. The Note is published as handling up to 32GB micro SD cards, but there are plenty of people using 64GB micro SD cards with their phone.
Using the external SD card would allow you to add additional music and photos and other files. It is not used at all by the OS or system, so you would have as much space on it as you can after formatting it. (You lose some space after formatting.)
So to summarize: the Note has 16GB, about 12GB available through the internal SD card. You can add additional storage using the external SD card (officially up to 32 GB, unofficially up to 64Gb).

Got it, but still have a little question. I noticed when I install any app, it goes directly onto the 2GB system reserved space. What if I run out of that 2GB, what happens in that case, can I move the installed apps into the 12GB or I have to move it into the purchased/external SD card?

^^ got it, thanks.
K I researched and read, I still cannot find out if I can safely root my Bell i717, without increasing the flash counters.
Also, it seems there is no ICS yet available for this device.
Can someone please chime in?
wow this thread cleared up a lot for me. Still got a few questions though...so when i go to settings and click on an app and click "move app to sd" it moves it to the "internal sd" which has about 12gb of space? so then what goes on the external sd card? is the storage on the SD card ONLY accessible when you plug it into a computer and put it in mass storage mode? I remember when I had my nexus one, moving apps to sd actually put it on the external sd card..
The note is not a DROID. Droid is a verizon marketing term.
You can reset your flash counter. So even if you increase it by flashing CWM or rooting then just reset it back to 0. That's what I did.
Once CWM is installed flash all the ROMs you want through CWM. Just back up nandroid first and you can always go back.
I use a 64GB microSD card and store nandroid backups, photos, videos, podcasts, etc.
The internal SD (USB Storage) is used for app data.

Root ir phone throigh odin then go search dev thread for the rom u want read the requiements then flash they r all good
note @ 1.83
... You don't need root to flash a ROM.
Instead of rooting with Odin, just flash CWM with Odin then flash the ROM from there.
The only reason to root first, is to run titanium backup if you so desire

[Q] NT CM7 internal is using ext. sd card for storage rather than internal

I have a 16gb NT which I started out with CM7 running off the ext. sd card. Loved it so I decided to load it on the internal. Well after doing that, CM7 uses only the ext. sd card (8gb microsd) rather than the internal memory. I can still boot to CM7 without the ext. sd card, but I cannot install apps and what not.
I am familiar with android but I'm not expert. I feel like its so sort of partitioning issue, and I'm sure its been covered before but I just can't find the right answer.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

[Q] Any way to disable SD Card emulation?

My phone has alot of build in memory, so it emulates an SD card. But that runs out of space fast.
I have an SD card in it now, but it's mounted as sdcard2.
Can I disable the emulated SD card and make it goto the real sd card?
I can't move apps to the sd card because the sd card is emulated. Programs like link2sd don't give me the option to choose where I want to install to. It just chooses /mnt/sd card, which is the emulated card, not /mnt/sdcard2, which is the real one.
/bump

it does not emulate an sdcard. all android devices recognise internal memory as an sdcard. externals cards are recognised as sdcard2, external_sd or sd-ext. its perfectly normal for it to be like that

I know this is about a month old, but I figured I'd chime in in case you're still having the issue.
No, there isn't a way to disable the SD card emulation. At least not that I've found. Only thing I found that works was to root my phone, partition a portion of a 32gig sd card and use Link2SD to use that as the default install location.
The instructions I followed:
http://www.noypigeeks.com/android/tutorial-a-guide-to-link2sd/
Again this requires a rooted phone, but seeing as you run the same phone I do (if your signature is accurate) it's not a problem. Just follow the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40121670 Took me less than 10 minutes.
That seems to have worked, Thanks!

The only working way for me is to install cyanogenmod 13 which will give you the opportunity to mount your second storage (sd card) as internal storage (first).

Internal Storage Issue!

I know this issue has been covered many times on the forum but I couldn't find a proper way to solve it.
I am having a Galaxy S2 running official jelly bean 4.1.2.
I don't know why Samsung has partition the internal storage this bad :/
It only gives us 2 GB for installing apps from the play store and currently I'm running out of Internal storage because I keep a lot of apps on my phone. I can't even move any app (not even a single app) to USB Storage. I always get the error that "Unable to move app. Not enough storage space."
I got around 6-7 GB free in my USB Storage so there is a lot of space there.
Is there any way to increase the Internal storage (2 GB) to a bigger size 3 GB or 4 GB or a solution so that I can transfer the apps to the USB storage?
Thanks in advance.
Usb. Is were the Rom and kernel ie running system is. Sd card is were you keep apps and things and ext sd is well ext sd card. If you have 7gb free then you put them there. Why would you want to put them in Usb. ? Usb is for running system not for apps. Sd card is for that.

On my phone, if apps are moved to sd they exist on the external SD card. Maybe that's why it says you don't have enough space, because you don't have an external sd card? I guess any small one would do, no need to splash out for a 64GB one...
