I recently bought an HTC One that has been rooted and is running Android 4.3. Overall the phone seems to work properly but there are three frustrating things that I am struggling with (so far):
1) The photo gallery doesn't work - no images are displayed in the gallery even though they are saved in the phone's file system. Can't make new galleries. - This is not critical, I found a third party app that works, but it might be related to the other problems.
2) There are no sounds listed in the Ringtones/Notification/Alarm area and no ability to add any (+ is disabled). The default sounds worked until I tried to install a third party ringtone. Most of the apps crashed, but one app did say it installed the ringtone. Now I have no ringtone at all. Can't find the default 'cause it never showed and if a new one installed it is nowhere to be found, but I have no ringtone anymore. Almost as if the old default got unsuccessfully overwritten.
3) Never got any sync apps to work. HTC Sync Manager fails when trying to install drivers on my computer from the phone. I've tried all of the suggestions that I found regarding that issue.
I am a total noob on Android OS but know my way around Windows pretty well and Linux moderately. If it were a Windows or Linux computer I would think there is a path or permissions setting that is off, but I know nothing about phone OS. I don't want to become a Droid expert or learn the ins and outs of rooting or whatever. I just want a phone that works. I can find my way around the file system. Maybe I need to put it back to original OS? I have seen several articles on that and can probably handle it if I have to, but would rather get the current installation working properly. Any advise you can give is appreciated.

Thanks for the response. I am reading articles and watching videos on how to do this. One question that I don't see answered is will reverting back to stock affect my carrier service? I am currently using Straight Talk rather than AT&T.
Thanks

Hi guys
Little help needed.. I've had the phone since Aug 09. Had loads of problems with it, but have now decided after nearly a year to update phone as I've lost all notification lights, the charging light, etc. etc. It's not a great phone at the moment!
Donwloaded latest ROM from the HTC site, plugged in phone, and it wouldn't work. Something about the abl, or acb? Wouldn't connect properly when searching etc.
Anyway round it, Tried disconnecting from net, but figure it needs the connection. But didn't work either way.
Is the latest Orange update the one to go for? Does it help the lousy signal, the frozen text messages?
When it says you lose all data, can someone clarify that for me please? Numbers, Sim card info, Phone numbers info, Pics, Music, Email set ups? etc. etc.?
Thanks
Which ROM have you tried?
If you haven't tried it yet, try the VillainROM 12 I think its pretty stable.
Hi, its the latest one for Orange on the HTC forum, but that's not the problem.
It's the fact I can't get the programme to take. It's that ab thing that keeps stopping me and the ROM just exits..
If your ROM is rooted then you shouldn't install the HTC official updates, instead look at the developers forum here and try ROMs from there. For example VillainROM 12 and many others are based on the latest official HTC update.
If your ROM is not rooted, I am not sure what the problem is. Assuming you don't want to root it, maybe you can get support either from HTC or from the shop you bought it at.
Have you got the latest HTC Sync installed?
Hi
Thanks for your replies.
No, not rooted, not anything, since I got it 12 months ago. Other than plugging into pc to transfer pics which always worked. HTC sync? Not aware of?
Never updated Rom ever, but its given me so much grief over the last year, I get maybe 2 web pages and then it freezes for ages and the green line sits for 10 mins before another page. Is that the nature of this phone? Would an update make a difference to that problem?
I downloaded few apps the other night and removed them and now all lights notifications and charging lights don't work. Typing is so laggy and painful to do. Texts won't scroll for minutes...
I just can't understand how everyone says this phone is so great?
I know its a year old now but its always been like this.
Any help much appreciated.
Install HTC Sync and you're problems should go away, though you may need to boot into fastboot and install the driver for that too for the update to work. I can describe that if necessary.
Thanks again ...
Fastboot? Lost me on that one
What does the Rom update erase?
Will try this tomorrow and see if I can get sync on there
You lose everything, but considering the problems you're having this may not be a bad thing. You can backup certain data without root access (such as texts i believe) but that is about it. Check out SMS Backup & Recovery for that. HTC Sync will do contacts (though you should really be using Google contacts by now rather than phone or sim).
Having said that you should lose nothing on your SD card, but I would format that after putting the new system on just in case (so backup to computer etc).
I'll explain fastboot if it's needed. Post back detailed error messages if you get any after installing HTC Sync.
Thank you for your help. I will attempt that when I'm at home, can't do at work.
Forgot to ask, have many others had the phone switching itself off problem? It still does this, and only when you remove battery will it switch on again. No idea why, but you can press every button and nothing doing till battery is removed. Love to know what causes that...
I'm a great ad for this phone huh.
So I finally took the plunge and rooted; I installed CM7, as well as an updated kernel (I think it was from "imoysen", or something like that?), though I'm still kinda shaky on these concepts. So I have a few questions.
First of all, on CM7, it appears that I don't have a voicemail app anymore. Previously, after installing CM7, I was missing the Android Market app (as well as other Google apps), and someone instructed me to flash GAPPS, which got these back for me. Am I going to have to do the same for voicemail?
Secondly, back when I was on stock, I like using Fancy Widgets and/ or Beautiful Widgets to get Sense-lock clocks (but with more themes). I'm noticing now, on CM7, though, that none of them are able to pick up my location for weather. Why is that, and how do I fix it?
Lastly, and this is one that I'm VERY curious about, now that I'm rooted, is there any way to make headphones with controls originally made for iPhones (the ones with volume +/-, and a middle button) work with the Thunderbolt? I know they don't work on stock because it's an Apple proprietary thing, or whatever, but is there a way to get them working on a rooted device?
Thanks much to anyone that can answer any of my questions.

No idea on Voicemail; I've only used Sense-based ROMs. I would assume that there are multiple voicemail apps available (but you could just use Google Voice, and avoid ever having to listen to voicemails! text message transcriptions of voicemails are much better)
Weather Location: In Settings -> Location, make sure you have location services enabled. Also make sure you have syncing enabled in Accounts&Sync.
As for the headphones, check out https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&hl=en
You'll notice, however, in the description:
Headset Button Controller cannot support the separate volume control buttons on the iPhone headset - this is a limitation of the Android framework.

So you'll only get 1 button worth of control.
Hm. Well, in CM7, I don't see any kind of setting for "Location", nor is there anything for it in Accounts & Sync. I know when I was first trying to get it to work, I stumbled upon some settings for location, but even when I had everything enabled, it still wasn't picking up my location.
Bummer about the headphones... I have a really nice set that I like a lot, I just wish the three buttons worked with Android.
Flash this in your recovery. This is the latest network location apk. Should fix you location.

Cool, thanks, that did the trick!
Hey all, sorry if this has been asked, but I have done searches and tried looking thru the forum and cant find an answer... So today after I got sick of my Droid X2 not working properly on stock for months now, I finally went ahead and tried rooting and installing CM7 and this time around (well on my second or third try tonight) I got it installed and working!! Well, working for the most part. So far I am super impressed and enjoying the rom! The one major issue is I cant seem to sync my contacts from Google. I have always been able to in the past on stock and what not, but not on CM7. I get like 3 contacts that were saved to my phone, but everything else is gone. Ive added my gmail account that they were associated with and synched and still no contacts. If anyone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated!
*Also, just checked my calendar and its working fine... all my info has updated there, but still not my contacts...
This also happened on a friend of mine's x2 when I flashed cm7 for him. Not sure why?
I suspect it had something to do with google not sync the contacts properly before I flashed though, and nothing to do with the rom.
I felt so bad that he had lost all his contacts. I swore then to never flash rom's for anyone else, and I haven't. I just direct them to xda. If I can learn it, then they can too.
O catches my friends 30 to root and rom... did u correctly flash the Google apps thing for aosp roms? Try again with the flashing of Google apps.... but it's just a few numbers...

Edit: I charge my friends....
I had the same exact thing happen to me...
Thanks for all the help... I ended up just staying up for a few hours and re-adding it from Verizons backup assistant. I did a search for the CM7 rom in general (not just for the DX) and some others had the problem and used Verizon to get their contacts back. The sad thing though was there is a file you are able to download from Verizon and put it on your sd card to load your contacts... but I tried and tried and couldnt get it to work. I tried putting the file on the SD, then on the internal and nothing... So I just went thru one by one and added them in myself... heh.
Now my next issue is that my wifi drops out frequently. I have not had the chance to look it up, but was wondering if any of you have had this problem. I am hoping the file was not outdated, as the stuff I put on the phone I got back in January and February. Not sure if there have been updates since then, but I thought I would ask. If anyone has a fix I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks again everyone!

I am... been looking thru the forums for the past hour. Sure I will figure it out...
The best way (in my experience) to keep contacts while going from ROM to ROM is to use the import/export feature in the contacts list.
Contacts -> menu button
Select import/export, then export to SD card.
This sends a vCard file to your SD card which you can keep there or backup to an external HDD or computer HDD.
To restore, follow the same instructions and select import from SD card. Select the file and watch all of your contacts come back
Verizon's backup assistant is crap IMO. It's too slow and confusing to navigate efficiently.
I have searched on phone issues and even messagebank... There was a post that seemed similar but not the same.
Unfortunately I can't say just where this issue came in; I only noticed it yesterday and, as mentioned in another thread, I have been trying out ROM flashing. My GUESS would be it has to do with flashing 'modem_CWM_I9300XXDLH7' but that is purely a guess because it is call related.
I have flashed a stock ROM, GT-I9300_XSA_1_20120710170916_9xjds9h0pm to install an Aussie ROM (phone from Kogan and was German model) and more recently flashed 'Kernel_CM10_20120820_Official_CWM' in preparation for trying a JB ROM. (I am planning on using 'I9300XXBLH4_Jelly_Bean_4.1.1_Clean_Stock_Rom_Nandroid_Backup' for a first try)
SO, phone seems to be working well; I managed to crash it (stuck on Samsung screen) but have backups that brought me back up to where I was without too many issues.
But, I noticed yesterday I got a Telstra Messagebank notification for a missed call/voice message. It says it came from +101 but when I click the notification it takes me to a Telstra recording saying the number is not connected. This used to work. Dialling 101 works just fine and I have looked to try to locate where the phone has decided MB is now +101 but can't find it.
It's not a biggie, and I figure maybe I need to call Telstra to get their info resent or something, but it is a little annoying to have to dial each time instead of just press the notification.
Any ideas of what to try? I'm about to flash the JB ROM so if that fixes it I will be back (hopefully without dramas ) soon. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
XXBLH4 is a really old JB leak, flash XXDLH8 instead (DLH9 is newer but has a keyboard bug)
As for your problem, I don't know what to tell you but your carrier won't be able to help you as you have unofficial firmware on your phone and that may be the reason and they will only be able to assist you in regards to the official Telstra fw.
Is it really that big of a deal to dial 101?

that is a strange one. It seems as though it's trying to dial 101 as an international call (with that plus in front of it making it a call to USA number 01), when it should have picked it up as +61 101.
Out of curiosity, what does it come up with when you tap and hold on the SMS and go to "View Message Details"?
@nodstuff - The reason for I9300XXBLH4_Jelly_Bean was because, a. I found it and the file date was something like 25/8/12, and because the description said it has been cleaned up and all bloatware removed. I don't recall seeing XXDLH8 for download but I am new here... I was thinking along the lines of getting something known and stable for my first JB flash.
@Dinty - I don't get a 'View Message' option on a long tap, I get a menu with, Call +101, Send Msg, Edit numbr, Add to Contacts, Send Nmbr, Add to Reject list, Delete.
Further info just noticed - older call from MB (30/8 - prior to new Modem flash) came in as Int'l M'Bank with #101# so somewhere the MB number has altered.
I doubt Telstra will have an issue with the FW etc. It isn't their phone. I bought outright and would be speaking to a rep - IIRC when I got my Moto Defy from the dealer a couple of years back they had to send me a txt which I saved and it set up the Telstra info on the phone. Might be mistaken in memory of that though...
@nodstuff - do you have a recommendation for a XXDLH8 ROM to flash? I'm looking for stable with some optimisation and as clean of standard apps as possible. I've got an Apps backup in Titanium Pro that I figure I can use to put my new apps back.
Also, is the Keybd issue with LH9 itself or just with some ROM's?
thanks for the help...

Well don't flash XXBLH4 so, its very buggy and not stable.
XXDLH8 is very stable and pretty bug free.
There are a few downloads for it (cwm flashable, Odin or an ota package. I suggest cwm or Odin method as the ota method is quite tricky.)

I believe you're talking about the automatic set-up service. I think this is what you mean:
http://www.configure.telstra.com.au/telstra/index.jsp
Not sure it will have any effect on that messagebank issue, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try!

Thanks for the link - that looks what I originally had to do over the phone, but then I didn't have a Telstra account set up at that point.Didn't work unfortunately. le sigh!
So, I am now the owner of a JellyBean phone, all working nicely and with my apps installed again. All went smoothly and I just chose my purchased and download apps from my titanium backup and Voila!!!
I took the advice and installed GT-I9300_WanamLite.XXDLH8.V3.0.RC4.NO-WIPE - I thought about the DLH9 version of it but saw a note in the thread about keybd issues, so, taking the advice above I DL'd the DLH8 version.
Only thing I have noticed so far is it seems a bit slow on the USB charging. Once it's at 100% I will disconnect and see if maybe power is draining too fast, then look at ways to improve battery.
Just did some trials of the MB issue and noticed something odd - if I try to create a Contact I am unable to enter numbers in the name field. I also tried to set up my mobile banking and using the app provided by the bank I cannot use numbers for my ID, even though it is an 8 number ID. The Keybd simply will not change to numbers until I go to the PW line - is this the keybd error you mentioned as being present in DLH9, nodstuff??
Hm... so I took a chance and flashed Wanamlite's keybd fix; the thread says it is for DLH9 but I figured what the heck, if it fails the phone I can easily reflash the ROM.
Seems to have worked. Gonna leave a comment over there about it because I seem to have noticed something not mentioned by others.

Sorry to say it, but I believe that something might be fundamentally wrong with with the ROM on your device. If everything works well with your secondary (or any) device, rooted or not, the only thing that stands in the way in this equation is the customization in the ROM. I think that you should consider downgrading the version you are using, maybe testing another ROM or just placing stock and see if it works there.
When you customize a phone, you open a whole to many things and restarts, reinstalls and more are always part of the solution.
