seriously, and i mean it.. did you guys have trouble multitasking with youtube?
When you buffer anything inside youtube, and you switch to ANY other app for example browser or calendar or whatever, all the buffer you have done, will gone back to zero !! Wtf!
How stupid this is?? And i wonder why nobody has ever noticed this and complained about it somewhere over the net.
Yes, I have even basic problem with youtube. When I switch to another app, why does the video stop playing? Sometimes, I am only interested in the audio!

No, the video can continue to play but in the background. For example, on a PC, if I have youtube video playing in a browser tab, and I switch to another browser tab - the video continues to play back. So, I can at least listen to audio (which is useful for music videos).
Thanks,
Osho
I have this problem and it annoys me, as I have very slow internet,so last thing I need is for it to restart again.

Yea, i know that if in pc, you switch to another tab, youtube would still continue buffering. But this did not happen in tab's youtube. If I buffer any video, and then i switched to browser, then switch back again to youtube, all the buffers would have gone to zero.
Are you 100% sure you dont have this problem with your stock youtube app?

Don't be fooled into thinking that Android's multitasking is that much more robust than iOS. When you move away from an app, the system sleeps the VM that it is running in to devote clock cycles and memory to your current working application. The only way an app can continue to persist alive in the background is to specifically request to remain alive and working on something with background processes. The YouTube app doesn't do this, so when you move away from it the application sleeps.
The only advantage Android has over iOS in terms of multitasking is the easy ability for an app to run background processes if it so chooses. Fortunately no sane app developer is going to write an app that tries to stay completely active in a non-windowing OS.

Okay, i know it make sense to not write an app that tries to stay completely active in background. But wouldnt it make sense for an app such as youtube that needs a lot of buffer (since not all country in the world have fast mobile connection), to be partially active in background, such as the buffering ability?
I think that make sense! And i still wonder why wouldnt honeycomb developer realize this .

I would also like Youtube to be able to play in the background, just like on a PC. Why not? It can't be too hard to programme either.
Swedish national radio, Sveriges Radio, has a good app that allows you to listen to all their programmes and the app runs smoothly in the background while I surf or do other stuff on the tablet. You'll find it at Google Play (former Market) if you're interested.
An other thing that Youtube on Android does not do is to run playlists. Again, why not?
I can't really see the point in removing great features when you develop a new OS. The goal can't really be to make it worse compared to the PC, can it?

If your mostly worried about the playlist feature, it works when running stock browser and you are signed in. All you have to do is tap on the bottom-right corner of the video's preveiw image, afterr tapping, the little '+' shows up

A solution would be using OverSkreen (Browser) and just open youtube in a small window.
this is just a suggestion for anyone that is having the same issues as me, which is simply constant lag/buffering issues with the stock youtube app. running on what i felt was a fast enough internet connection, i would constantly have buffering issues both on HD and non-HD (a lot more consistently with HD).
after looking for weeks, i found an app called TubeMate (http://goo.gl/mzrZT)
it is currently only available via the amazon app store. it seems to have a few other features besides viewing the videos (like downloading, downloading as mp3, etc..) but all i really care for is being able to stream a video in HD quality w/out looking embarrassed.
hopefully this will help some of you that are also experiencing this issue. if you aren't, well i'm really happy for you.
Since its a free app, upload the apk.
didn't realize DLing from the amazon appstore would be a big deal. but here you go.

for the guys involved in this thread so far, are you also experiencing buffering issues with your prime and if so, let us know if TubeMate helps out. i've certainly seen a HUGE improvement with all youtube videos to a point where i only stream HD now.
The app works great and also allows you to download video or save it as an .mp3
I have used this app for years on all my devices and on my prime since I purchased it. Wouldn't use anything else great app

please help
I use it to download videos, not stream. The UI is rather ugly ;P
Can someone clarify: Is this app a REPLACEMENT app that uses youtube (what I think it is)? Or is it an app that somehow optimizes the native youtube app (what I hope it is)?

it's another app that does not optimize the youtube app.
while i love it and still use it, i must put my disclaimer that the issue with the laggy youtube ended up being the Wifi/BT issue. beyond that, it still speeds up buffering better than the stock app.

I haven't had any real problems with streaming vids, but I might check it out regardless. Faster buffering is always nice.

Okay, just wanted to thank you for pointing out the app. It's great, love it. I' ve hit the thanks button.
the ui is ugly in this app but it works amazingly faster than stock app. plus it lets you download the videos or you can download them as mp3 to listen in music player. works great. I love the look of stock YouTube app but sick of the buffering on some vids. I have high speed wireless so no reason it should be buffering like that. this app eliminates that basically.
whenever i click to watch a video in tube mate it pops up asking me which player to use - youtube or tubemate- i choose tubemate but then the video doesnt load...anyone else had this problem>?
should be called buffer be gone!!
Gotta say +1000000 for this app, I use Crackle to watch some movies, took away all the buffering, youtube too no more buffering..... excellent app!!!
I received my official Allshare cast dongle today and although it is working I can't seem to get videos that I play to appear on BOTH screens at the same time. On various youtube reviews/demos, I have seen people playing videos with it appearing on the TV and the GS3 screen simulaneously. When I play a video it only appears on the TV and on the GS3 screen I get either a black background (e.g. youtube player) or a black background with the allshare icon logo on it and the player controls (standard video player).
What do I need to do to get the video to appear on both screens at the same time?
Cheers,
Richard.
The only way is to install another video player because if you saw a video showing doing both then they been misleading you.
Im sure its possible. The YouTube videos i have seen are not just ones recorded at the official Galaxy S3 launch demo booths but also from a fair number of unofficial user demos using their home TV's. I doubt they are all deliberately faked.
Also the videos all use the standard built in Galaxy S3 video player too.

I've got an Allshare Cast myself and it has no settings so Samsung must have fiddled it up to have both screens working because obviously it looks better in a booth with both displays running.
And I think Samsung turn the display off when watching videos because obviously you not gonna be watching both and it saves a load of power, so guess you just have to wait for someone to create a mod to get that done.
The Allshare cast does NOT mirror when playing video.
What worries me is when using the video player, it permanently leaves the Allshare logo on the screen. It is very very dim, but surely that could still result in screen burn after many hours of video watching this way!

There is some lag, yes. It doesn't make games unplayable, but it could put you at a disadvantage for multiplayer. Some games which are currently free on the Samsung app store are free and have optimisations for this system. Modern Combat 3 maintains resolution but suffers framerate drops sometimes in dual screen mode. Asphalt 7 maintains framerate but lowers resolution when the screen gets busy. The TV displays the main game, and the phone has a map of the course which is quite cool.
There is a bit of luck here, as it depends on the quality of WiFi signal in your home and interference can affect how well this system works. Certainly it has its uses though and I suspect there will be firmware improvements for it.

bugger, I wish they'd hurry up and release to TV version, I have a top of the range samsung tv which will work as the cast dongle when they get around to enabling it, i'm hoping latency will be slightly less too as its a straight hop to the TV bypassing the HDMI connections.

Thanks. Yes I since discovered that VLC let you do the mirrored playback after looking very closely at some youtube videos that demonstrated this mode.
Out of interest what other problems are you having? I haven't had time to test mine all that much yet. One thing that annoys me is that there is no on/off button so I have to unplug it to turn it off (I have it hooked up to my HDMI auto switch).
I can't get it to fit tv properly, sometimes requires two or three attempts to connect. Streaming Iplayer has audio sync problems, there is no alternative for audio out to a sound system and today it disconnected and refused to connect for ages. Had to unplug and reset with button at least 3 times. When is first got it my phone had no option for allshare and Samsung don't have any support on it. No one could tell me that I had to update through Kies on my desktop to get this option. All in all I do like it and use it loads, I'm just hoping the new official jb firmware will increase stability. Funny enough the guy I bought it of on ebay here in Turkey emailed me asking for confirmation it works as he has had loads of negative feedback from selling them. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt Samsung to create some support pages. But as usual xda dev prevails.

There is a firmware update in the Samsung app store for the allshare cast dongle, available today. So far, there is a rapid connection established to the unit, stable. Sound issues also are resolved so far. Great update.
When playing music with the stock Music Player application on my phone and turning the phone screen off or multitasking, the music is still able to play in the background. Is it possible to do the same with the stock YouTube app? I want to let the audio of the YouTube video I am watching to keep playing when I either exit out of the app or when I press the power button on my phone to turn off the screen to save battery. Although I can just set my phone screen to not go off when idle for a certain amount of time, but then again, that is battery consuming.
Phone information:
-Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G from T-Mobile
-Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4
-Rooted
-No Custom Rom Installed

Even when I view a youtube video in the browsrer and turn off the screen (or even do as much as press the menu button) it stops playing.
Please I need this as I want to listen to youtube at work, where I can't have the distraction of a video in the corner of my eye, or pssibly nsfw videos.
I don't want to try one of the gazillion market apps or get biased suggestions of such app. I want an official or at least semi-official (i.e. widely used) solution.
It looks like Google finally dropped Nexus Q support. With the music streaming issues lately, some hoped they would fix it. Well, they did. You won't be having streaming issues anymore, because you can't do it at all. Sad day for us Nexus Q owners...
The question on my mind is: what to do now with this piece of hardware? My previous concerns about putting CM on it are now moot. I'm thinking of making it an independent media server. XBMC + CM 10?
What are all of you going to do next?
Does CM 10 include support for the speaker outputs?
Last I tried it was HDMI only

I posted on another thread wondering if the bluetooth can just be made discoverable so you can connect to it like a car stereo for streaming.

Sad indeed. It the most beautiful piece of useless technology I own now.
Fine, I understand they're killing the Q. I hate the fact that they're doing it, but as they said - no one really paid for it, atleast not paid Google.
But help me understand this, is there anything that can now replace spotify and apple-TV from Google? I'm loving the all access music service from Google but i still don't have the possibility to send songs to a media center, right?

This may be a stupid question, but can the previous Music app be "resigned" so it isn't updated or seen by the Play Store? Could the new Music app then be installed side by side with the altered Music app so we still get Q streaming abilities (with the old app) and then use the new Music app for All Access?
Modaco did something like this with TweakDeck. You could use both TweakDeck and TweetDeck side by side on the same device.

While it may not be the official method, I have Google Play Music sideloaded onto my CM10.1 Nexus Q and it works just fine, even since the update they announced at Google IO (with the orange UI).
If you have cm10.1 you can now download google music in the store this still need a proper app to control it from your phone like apple tv. Also does anyone know what kind of development is going on with it in cms side?

I'm up for doing this, but how do you control it? bluetooth mouse? or does it still connect up to the music app on your phone/tablet?
I'm pretty unhappy about this too. I bought my Q on EBay prior to the announcement that they weren't actually releasing it. I've pretty much built my whole music system around it so not being able to control it will make me go back to using an iPod - something I REALLY don't want to do!! I uninstall the update on my Razr HD and the old version still seems to work but I've not had any luck doing the same thing yet on my Xoom that's running EOS 4 (4.2.2). I may see if I can pull the apk from my Razr HD and install it on the Xoom.

You can control it with a bluetooth mouse, keyboard, remote etc. It doesn't allow you to use your phone/tablet as the playlist manager like the stock Nexus Q functionality, instead you get a fancy widescreen tablet style Google music interface on your TV and you navigate your music and play direct from there.
Am I right that there is no way to get analog output to work with CM to use it headless with some remote app and without TV plugged?
I'm looking for a meaningful solution aswell. We bought one of ebay and loved using it since our small circle of friends are all using google music so it made a lot of sense to us. If it were possible to keep to seperate gmusic apks on the phone that would already be enough I guess.
A good solution would be worth 100€ to us.
