Official Off-Topic lounge for non-device discussions-introduce yourselves - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Thought we should all introduce our selves since we're all here for pretty much the same reason and this is of course hacking and customizing our sprint note 3's
My names Cory and I've been on XDA since the release of the original EVO 4g. I've been into installing custom roms and modifying my devices for a while now. I've had the HTC Hero, EVO 4g, EVO 4g shift, EVO 3d, Galaxy epic touch, Galaxy s3, Galaxy s4, Galaxy Note 2 and now Galaxy Note 3. Even gone through the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5. Out of every device the note 3 tops them all.
Please play along and give a description of yourself, your devices and which device is your favorite.
Also wanting the developers to chime in so we can all get a good idea who to thank and what to look for for the amazing roms to come.
Thank you all and let's keep this thread clean and fun
Also too if anyone needs any type of help or info you can comment on my other thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482744

[Q:] Upgrading to Samsung Galaxy S II

I still own a HTC Hero and want to upgrade to a newer Android Phone
So after reading lotsa pages and pages, i came to the conclusion that this is the betetr phone to get.
I had the HTC EVO3D / HTC Sensation / LG Optimus 2X / LG Optimus 3D and Samsung Galaxy S II in mind, i'm not out of it complete, but as far as custom roms and future proof (i know that's a bit odd, cause it's going to fast in smartphoneland) i think the Samsung GSII is well worth the buy, 3D was more of a gimmick i wanted, but it's not really needed
So should i go for the Galaxy II, or should i take the HTC Sensation or LG 2X in consideration?
You've done the reading, you know the answer.... welcome aboard
I moved from a Desire to the Galaxy S2 a few days ago, and am loving it. For me, it was between the Sensation and Galaxy S2, but from all the reviews, the Galaxy S2 seemed to constantly edge it - plus, although I was a fan of the Sense interface on HTC phones, the latest versions felt more heavyweight, especially compared the relatively lightweight TouchWiz interface, which I thought would impact performance in the future.
Either way, they're all great phones, you'll love whatever you do go for, but I feel I made the right decision.
Well it's only 2 posts, but i'll order the Galaxy S II, seems i can't be wrong with it , at least, it's always better then my wife her iPhone 4

Help me soon

MOTOROLA ATRIX 4G , MOTOROLA DROID RAZR , SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE , GALAXY S2 , GOOGLE NEXUS S 4G AND GOOGLE NEXUS S , which one should i buy , made more than 5-6 hours of comparison, review , still confused
Start by eliminating everything Motorola as it is junk. Galaxy s 2 or galaxy nexus.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
I would say Galaxy Note, but that depends on you liking a
5 inch mammoth of a phone. Outside of that, Galaxy
Nexus or SII would be my next choices.
Thanks for the reply ...
fine dude , if i opt for samsung which one should i go for it ? i can go upto $650 not more than that . r8 now am using motorola defy and am very much pleased with that , will take your comments as my buying option .
Motorola makes decent phones hardware wise, but they lock the bootloaders, install tons of bloatware and make your phone model obsolete in a few months.
Samsung galaxy S 2, why ? Cause i have him! Best phone.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &

Moving to Q&A
I think the Galaxy SII is the better android phone now. If you want to want to hack him, there is a lot of ROM availables. Some of my friends have it, the screen is very good, and the battery life seems to be pretty decent too. It's a powerful, and beautiful. Take it
Thanks for the reply ...
guess i made this post in Q and A only !
and above now the options are S2 or nexus or note ?
Just as a note (no phone pun intended) if you go with the S2 I'd personally recommend trying to get one that's more standard GSM, international version for example avoid the Samsung Epic 4G Touch if possible, it has a bigger screen, but it's not as compatible as the other variants are... the GSM versions seem to have more ROM options, I guess maybe it's due to the CDMA modem in the E4GT, but there isn't even a full-compatible release of Cyanogenmod for the E4GT and the official ICS isn't out for it either. I have the E4GT and I really like it, but I bought it thinking Cyanogenmod was already out for it, but it was only available for the other SG2 models. The same might be true for Skyrocket? Just something to think about.
I surely would buy Sgs II.
I own a Galaxy S. My bro has a Sgs II and i felt in love with his phone. ABSOLUTELY GREAT.
Galaxy Nexus is awesome too but i didnt saw it in person
no choice
hi, i got samsung galaxy 2 (sgs2) for almost half a year - couldnt be happier!!!! my friends with nexus and motorolla are sorry they didnt get my phone. I suggest to get either sgs2 or samsung note depending on the size you are comfortable with as they are practically identical aprt from the screen size.
Also, dont forget that sgs3 will be out in few month and 3d phones are about to start their crusaide.
Go to gsmarena.com and do a comparison (under the photo of the phone on th eleft click on COMPARE) with any of the phones and by spec sg2 will will - by user experience as well @gsmarena.com/[email protected]
hope it helps...

Upgrade - SG3 VS EVO LTE Which & Why?

I love me EVO 3D and most importantly I get great Wimax coverage where I am located so I am having a hard time validating my upgrade. However I am getting the itch for a new device. And one of the things I am really looking forward too is a better camera. In my case LTE doesnt look like its going to be in my area (Vegas) any time soon. So sacrificing 4g for what will ultimately be a fancy 3g phone may or may not be worth it. I am torn between getting the Galaxy 3 and EVO LTE . What are your guy's thoughts on the 2 phones and if you are going to upgrade or considering upgrade which would you choose and why?
go with the htc lte
you will get the best experience i think
galaxy sIII isnt worth it because for NOW there are mostly SINGLE core games out there (nova 3, mc3 and stuff like that) and very rare dual core.. but MULTI core wont be there in this year i think...
i would go with the evo, it looks much nicer and i love the edges on the new screens and also on my evo 3d
soo.. hopefully you go with htc
greetz and sry for my bad english ^^
I went with the evo 4g lte over the sg3 because I personally prefer sense over touch wiz by a large margin. If you are the type to just put cm9 on your phone shortly after your purchase then that shouldnt matter to you.
- Also the screen of the sg2 looked fake to me.The colors were very bright but not realistic. I am not sure if that is still an issue with the sg3.
- the camera app on the evo lte is great with the ability to shoot video and take pictures simultaneously.
I won't be choosing either. I don't see either as a significant enough upgrade over my 3D. Also, I want to wait until LTE comes to my neighborhood before upgrade. Finally, I am anxious to see what Google's next Nexus phone will be. There are rumors that they will introduce 5 different models in early fall. I am hoping one model will have a large screen (a la the Note). I am so tired of waiting for 3rd parties to upgrade their lame skins (TouchWiz, Sense) before releasing android OS updates.
If I had to choose, I would select the SGIII. The non-removable battery of the EVO 4G LTE is a deal killer. I must be able to swap batteries.
The lag argument on sense is moot with the LTE. that said, if you like sense the decision should be very easy. AOSP development on the LTE will be way better than on the 3D too.
SGS3 will probably have more accessories if you're into that.
If you're undecided then wait to you get a chance to play with both

HTC EVO LTE:
Best reasons:
The Camera (This I like)

HTC Sense 4

SGS3:
Best reasons:

(v) 2GB Ram?
Smart detection features
All Share Cast (This I like)
Both are great, just don't be the fool who's hunting for the greener grass or the next best thing, if you like it, buy it.
I bought the EVO LTE & I'm not looking back, hopefully I'll be holding this for 2 years (22 Months really).
Probably not going to get either and wait for something better (see: Eclipse), but if I had to choose one it would definitely be the S3.
Two reasons:
1. The S3 has 2GB RAM
2. The S3 won't have a locked BL.
As far as Sense and Pee go, don't really care, heard about these newfangled things called custom ROMS.

supposedly the camera is better on the s III, but i think the sense camera software is supposed to be better.
I am really torn myself with this decision. Most people on this forum will say choose htc cause your on the htc evo 3d page. I suggest asking the same question in android general or something.

this has me kinda leaning towards the s3 as well, especially the development factor. Should have hundreds of roms especially since it seems like there is really only 2 versions of the S III. There is the lte and the quad-core version. They all have the same body though.
I'm considering the same...
I love Sense and Sense can't be had unless on an HTC phone. I also enjoy the CM experience and go back and forth, but since I can't put Sense on a non-HTC device, I'm probably going to get the LTE. I've played with it and it really is a great little phone.
I was going to make a similar thread, I have an upgrade in June and I'm torn between the S3 and the Evo LTE. In regard to Samsung, what I have been reading is that the US versions will all be one style so the only hurdle there as far as development would be CDMA vs GSM roms.

Nexus or bust. With up to 5 possible Nexus phones coming out this year, I wouldn't even consider an upgrade right now. Sense and TouchWiz are nothing but bloatware that will hold you back.
But since you are asking for these two, I'd recommend playing with them side by side in a store and getting the one you prefer.

A lot of good arguments have been made. I.E
-removable Battery VS Embedded battery
-Cores
-Sense VS Touch Wiz
-Developer support
-1 GB RAM VS 2GB
I am still wondering how the camera quality is side by side though. Yes I think its cool you can take snap shots while recording but I dont think this is the end all be all. I would much rather prefer low light quality for that feature. However I have heard rave things about the EVO LTE camera in general. Also like some I dont know if a like the glossy vs matte finish on the back. I think I would have to see this in person. I have had glossy backs before on different phones and they are scratch magnets and I am not a huge fan of putting a case on my phone. I dont like the extra bulk I would rather just baby it. I am also a pretty big fan of sense. Although I have not really done a test drive on a touch wiz based UI. Its tough I would really like to see the bench marks and these two phones side to side. I would also be nice to maybe get sprint rep in here who has played with both and get there opinion.
2gb of ram on s3...that is all.

I'm in the same exact boat. Itching for new device but not excited that either device I chose I wont get LTE till later this year (SF bay area). I just have to have the latest device out and between the 2 I think I may this time around try out the Galaxy 3. I've been an HTC follower for a long time since the window days but I think its time to try new things. I do love the features of sense but I also like the features of the new S3. I just have to try it before I knock it as I can always exchange for the Evo LTE in 14 days. One thing I really not liking about the EVO lTE is non removable battery. I know Im going to use my phone to tether a lot with my tablet and between that and using the phone I've run into times when I've almost run out of battery on my Evo 3d and was so glad I had a spare battery and didnt have to go looking for a wall outlet.
I'm leaning more towards the EVO cuz I've had more HTC phones than any other but I did want to try Samsung out. But more than likely it will be the EVO because I'm used to most of the devs work if ain't broke then don't try to fix it.

People who say this are still living in the past. Samsung has come a long way since the Moment and is no longer the company you think it is. In saying that, I would no way in hell trade the EVO in for a Nexus. Now for a GS3, that's a different story.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I am aware that they have improved, I still don't like them. It has nothing to do with living in the past. I thought about switching to the gs3 about a month ago, but I don't like the design or screens. I never even owned a Moment.
I feel the same about the GS3 screen and look of the device. But let's not make this about the GS3.
The reason I'm considering the Nexus 4G LTE is cause of its Slick looks and screen. But wanted some input on how it stacks up to the Evo 4G LTE.
Performance & Hardware/software!

Youre asking a question that in a way can't be answered, I can tell you this, this, the 4g lte in my opinion has more features, I like to theme, and the HTC is easier to theme. But what the guy said about going with your gut, or what you want then you have to get that device.
It's hard to give reasons as to why or why not to get a certain phone, it's all personal preference

One of the biggest critiscisms of the gs3 is the SAMOLED screen. And samsungs continued use of them in future devices. Imo, if they changed to slcd and put more style into their devices using metal and less scratchable plastic then I would probably be a buyer. Oh yeah, touchwiz really sucks for me. It's like iphone.
Yea I know its all about personal preferences. My personal preference told me to cop this right here: Evo 4G LTE
But as I was looking through the Sprint store. The Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE caught my eye..Funny how that works! I didn't feel a thing when I saw the GS3.
But I went with what I know best and did my personal review on it and purchased the HTC Evo 4G LTE.
But my eye still was concern of the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE!
So I made this thread to find out from thy!
Been reviewing it but, can't really find anything "Goodies" about it.
So, you tell me!?
Found a Great vs Review! Keep in mind this was in May! Plus I don't care much for the GS3. This is strictly for The Two Devices Listed Down Below.
This sumed it up for me! Good thing it shows the differences between camera. I see that the Nexus camera is more of a square format then a wide format. So that right there is a no go on my end. But yea, they are both Superior devices. Wish I can own both...But oh well....

Processor and Memory:
Samsung uses a 1.2GHz dual core TI OMAP4460 processor, while EVO 4G LTE is powered by a dual core Qualcomm S4. Both run on 1GB of RAM. The Samsung opts for 32GB of internal storage, whereas HTC only offers 16GB built-in but has expandable memory for another possible 64GB. HTC also partnered with Dropbox to give users activating an EVO 4G LTE 25GB of free cloud storage. Both run the OS quickly and fluidly, and in everyday use it is likely that you wouldn’t notice much of a difference. There is something to be said for the heavy graphical load of Sense 4.0 and how well the EVO 4G LTE handles it.
When it comes to benchmarks, however, the EVO 4G LTE mops the floor with the Nexus. Besting our previous scores, the EVO 4G LTE was able to achieve just shy of 5500 on Quadrant Standard, with the Galaxy Nexus topping out just over 2000 at its best. Nenamark 2 gave similar results, with the EVO 4G LTE topping out at 58.8fps and the Galaxy Nexus less than half that 24.9fps. On AnTuTu the EVO 4G LTE maxed out a few points shy of 7000, with the Galaxy Nexus far behind at about 5100 (with the rest of its scores down in the mid 4000s.) It is pretty clear that Qualcomm’s latest and greatest is up the challenge of some heavy computing.
Camera:
A reworked camera app was one of the selling points of Android 4.0, and we have to say we’re impressed with the instant capture feature that the Galaxy Nexus offers. The interface is better, but still clunky and worlds behind the HTC interface found on the EVO 4G LTE. The technology behind the Nexus’ camera is also lagging behind; Samsung opted for a 5 megapixel f2.8 camera while HTC went with an 8 megapixel f2.0 with backside illumination. Both are capable of producing some great shots, and at times the Galaxy Nexus bested the EVO 4G LTE, but the majority of the time the HTC outperformed the Samsung.
Colors were more natural with the EVO 4G LTE, details were crisper and tricky lighting conditions were handled much better. The Galaxy Nexus struggled with color saturation, backlight situations and light/dark contrast (such as shooting shadows.) The EVO 4G LTE bested the Galaxy Nexus especially indoors, where the latter had a tendency to lose details quickly, as evidenced by the pantry shot.
Conclusion:
These are undoubtedly the two best Android devices Sprint has to offer, and really are two of the best smartphones available today. Some of this is going to come down to preferences, for example Sense versus stock or AMOLED versus S-LCD. All things considered the HTC EVO 4G LTE was the better performer of the pair in our opinion. It offers a superior display, top notch performance, excellent call quality and has an inspired design. The Galaxy Nexus is not without merit, and we would certainly carry one as our everyday phone if one were handed to us, but given the choice the HTC edges out the Nexus in too many categories to call it even.
Id say youre nuts but do what you feel is right for you, never understood why people want others to make up their mind for them

Any Note 2 to S4 users?

Hi All,
I have a chance to trade locally with someone who picked up a VZW Black S4. I have the White Note 2 and he wants to go back to the Note 2. The nerd in me screams awesome as I'm always wanting to check out new phones but at the same time, why might he want to go back to the Note 2 from the S4...
If anyone has and uses both phones what are the pro's and con's? Any preference between the two (and yes, I realize this is the S4 forums so preference may be a bit biased).
My Note 2 is like new, has two batteries and two s-pens so he's offering a straight trade, phone for phone no cash exhanged.
Thoughts?
I love the Note 2, I read books, watch movies and tv shows on it, and music quality is amazing. Signal quality and download speeds are insane. Looking for day to day use comparisons for those that have had both phones and advice on what I can expect from the S4 if I proceed with this trade.
Preference, I do miss the bigger screen.. flash video is a little smoother (more forgiving is better put) on the Note 2 (4.1.2) but being able to one hand the device, the IR blaster and 1080p display is rly nice.
Do it, the value of the Note 2 is dropping
Then trade up to the Note 3
Thats what I am doing (did)
Yeah I had the iPhone 5, bought a Note 2. And then sold the iPhone and Note 2 and got the S4 and I still have my upgrade next month! Loving the S4 right now.

I have the Note 2 and then bought the S4. I wouldn't get rid of either of them. they both have thier strong points.
The Note 2, all of the big scren stuff and the sPen,(which I still use, daily) as well as I have mine on a dual boot. so I get TW (Beans) and with a re boot running pacman (PA, AOKP, CM)
There is really no down side to the Note 2 other than it is about 9 months old... (Is that really a down side? the longer you have a phone the more options we have with the developers that come out with the new development options)
I have my eye on the note 3 when it comes out and I still would't get rid of the note 2.
With the S4, It is a great phone all of the awesome TW stuff and the blaster. The best thig is jacking any TV that you are near. Good stuff when your in the DR. Office and DR Phil is on, opps was on, I just jacked it and put on Sportscenter...HA!
if you like there are some really cool Original Android devs that are doing some cool stuff.
It still is really new and the development hasn't really been where it is with the Note 2, that is if you are into all of the new ROMs and bells and whistles...
We just ran into a snag until the new verizon OTA gets rooted, unlocked and opened up for the devs to get into it so those of us that like the TW ROMs.
I would not trade the Note 2 for the S4 , but that is just my .02
Right now the S4 is in a awkward stage with the Dev's. As mentioned earlier the latest OTA update locked the phone up tight. There is a huge bounty to re-root & unlock the bootloader yet no one has cracked it yet. If you're not into customizing your phone via root and custom roms then the S4 is a good choice. The screen detail alone makes the S4 very appealing. Get the S4; better equity and trade in value.

i wish i never sold my note 2. perfect daily phone for me. the s4 gets warm/hot to me where the note 2 never did. both have pros and cons. i cant wait for note 3 and htc one. s4 will be gone if either one of those is decent
My wife switched and is really happy.
She loved the Note II but the size was getting to be an issue for her.
She found the S4 noticeably lighter in in hand which she preferred when using her phone for extended periods, and that the S4 fit her various pockets in her smaller purses better. Those were her two reasons. She loved the extra screen size on the Note II, but has been happier overall w/the S4.
Would have got the N2 but at the time it was 300 when the S4 was 200. I just couldn't pay more for an "inferior" device. If they were the same price IDK what I would be with now though.

I still have both. However, I don't use the Note anymore. Nothing wrong with it, I'm just to busy playing with my S4. At first I did miss the S pen. It came in so handy at work. Running around and taking notes on the go, I saved thousands of trees Lol.
It does get warm. This differs with choice of kernel in my experience. While development isn't yet massive, it's not a ghost town either... As you can see. Personally, I'd make the switch... Unless the phone your looking at has the update??
Dual boot? I think it's time to take a gander in the Note 2 forums.

begin with galaxy S3,then note 2, and now S4, I cannot resist galaxy products!
I made the switch a few days ago.. gave my brother my note 2 and used his upgrade to get the s4. I definitely like some of the small features that the s4 has that my note 2 didn't (the smart video view in particular). I never really used the spen all that often so although I do miss it, it's nothing for me not to have it.
The main reason why I switched was because of the size on the note 2. I do love the screen size on the note 2(the only thing I truly miss), but the size of the phone it brought with it were getting old. I text a ton, and not being able to text on one hand without getting extremely pissed at the constant typos just got to be too much.
I haven't seen too much of a hit on my battery.. I could easily get through the work day and all evening with my note 2.. but I've yet to require a charge mid day on my s4.. and I'm using smart features which I didn't on the note 2. I'm definitely glad I made the switch.. something as little as being able to use cup holders to hold my phone is so nice.

I personally didn't get a ton more out of my note 2 if you consider the screen on time.

I had the note 2 since launch up until about a month ago when I got the s4. I still have the note. I just moved it over to a secondary line. I use both daily for different things. The note 2 is still an awesome device.... The s4 is my daily driver.... Wow. I'm sure I'm not being helpful at all. If u can look past the IR blaster and the resolution. Get the note 2. My kids are always losing the remote so the s4 comes in handy. The rest of the features I feel are just gimmicks. Nothing really..... Extravagant
