Well I did one last week that was successful but I was practicing on one with a broken digitizer so it was no good anyway. I broke it. This one seemed more hard to separate from the lcd. I don't know why. The lcd lifted from the housing and I didnt use much heat at all. But I'll post pictures for anyone who would like to attempt this. You can see on the pic with the tool how thin the glass is and where the lcd lifted from the housing.

Oh yea.you have to be extra careful of that flex cable connecting to the lcd which is exposed

I was looking for a thread to post this in, this may be the right place as you may have an idea, since you just installed a mega screen.
I cracked my mega screen last night, originally the phone was still working. In about half an hour the screen wasn't registering swipes, so I can't even unlock the screen. I dropped the phone in the rain so I'm not sure if it's simply the screen or if water has gotten in to the cracks?
Anyways, I am trying to make a decision on wether to sell my broken phone to Mazuma mobile and get around $120 back, or wether it's worth trying to get fixed. I'm not confident fixing phones, so ordering in the screen and attempting it is not an option. What I want to know, is what are the chances of a local repair shop being able to source a mega screen, and fix it, for a decent cost that would make getting it fixed the better option? Since you have just installed a screen I figure you at least know how much the part is
You can buy the lcd screen + digitizer which comes all pre-assembled and all you have to do it swap the whole screen + digitizer out as one unit..this way no fear of breaking anything..i see one on ebay for $158.00 US for the mega 6.3 i9200..but i think it will also work on the other 6.3 mega models..as they must all be the same that way...but i am not 100% sure on that. :good:

If you get the lcd and digitizer together, you can fix yourself and it's easy just as star master says. If you have a shop nearby they can replace just the glass

How much do you think it would go for on ebay? (or somewhere else) I didn't think a damaged phone would be worth selling?
That phone is still with over $200 as is.just the good motherboard alone. Especially if it had a clean imei number..then counting other parts of the phone too

Opened front glass
Hi, I opened front glass of Mega 5.8 to clean the dust inside it. When I put it back, the touch is not working. Earlier it was working perfectly, I did not remove any cables. Also that I cleaned it with dry cloth while the phone was on.
What may be the issue?

Hi,
I've never worked on one of these before but I have repaired many GS3, GS4, Note 2 with no problems. You successfully repaired one so my question is, is the optical adhesive like the GS3 where it rubs off with your finger? I've noticed a difference in GS3 & GS4 adhesive the GS4 is more difficult to clean off digitizer.
That yellow flex cable in your pic looks like a Digitizer flex. The layers are LCD (bottom) / Digitizer (sits on top of LCD so center) / Glass (top which is what our finger touches).
I have a Mega coming in tomorrow and the customer bought just the glass online. I'll see if I can separate. If you have any questions let me know I have repaired many a phones.

No good. The LCD was lifting off the frame which is a guarantee to break on such a large device. Also the adhesive is not the same as the GS3, it doesn't separate as easy. I stopped after I noticed the optical adhesive was not the same so do not attempt to "Lift Separate"
The best way to remove this digitizer is with a hot plate & (.10mm) molybdenum wire and slowly drag the wire between the LCD & Digi while face down on hotplate.

If i separated the digitizer and the glass ftom the lcd, than can i bound the new one with LOCA or will that damage the LCD?

I knew that was the only way to do it, with hot plate and fishing pole string. I'm sure it's a slow process. I'll have to invest in a good hot plate.

No huge investment needed, I use a standard electric pancake griddle which can be bought for around $20. Good, even heat. I've never tried the fishing line method but a pair of business cards does the job very well. I get it started with a dull razor blade in the corner and as soon as I see the glass separating, I slide a business card in behind it. Do the same for the other side. On these big screens, slide the cards down a bit, lay it down on heat, repeat. The trick to not busting the LCD is to keep the heat on it and take your time.
My temperature is set to 200 farenheit. Not sure off hand what that converts to in celsius. Ideally, you don't want the surface to pass 120 celsius. If in doubt, start low and increase temp slowly until the glue softens enough.
The glue we're taking about is LOCA[liquid optically clear adhesive] and is UV activated. It can be bought online pretty cheap. If you're going to replace the glass, go ahead and use the LOCA when putting the new glass on. I've seen sensitivity issues on glass that doesn't have the glue between it and the LCD. If you use the glue be sure to remove EVERYTHING from the frame including cameras, speakers, buttons and mics as it can get messy and go pretty much everywhere. To activate the glue you can literally take it outside on a sunny day and it will cure fairly quickly, about 5 mins or so. To remove it from unwanted areas just use a toothpick, toothbrush, and some rubbing alcohol. I've done it dozens of times this way and it always comes out looking factory fresh

Because that 'replacement glass' is a scam not a digitizer. It will not fit properly and will not function as a digitizer. If you look at the video, the removed digitizer has some wires on it. That allows communication w/ the motherboard. That glass is just glass. Even if you could remove the broken touch panel (digitizer) and fit the glass to the phone you would have no ability to use it.
The digitizers for all amoled Galaxy S phones are not available without the attached display panel. The replacement screen costs $95 just for the part, then add the labor and that is why it is so expensive.
If you notice, even the people who made the video (while showing the removal) don't sell the digitizer alone. Pro shops replace the whole assembly. If you can get the job done for $100 including labor, take it. It's a great price.

I just need the glass.
I've seen some other videos and I got it down. All you do is take the glass and remove it from the amoled screen then replace. I don't need a digitizer.

Not a problem. Unless you have done any repair work on these things you would not know. Most non oled display phones have the ability to replace touch screen and lcd displays individually. Unfortunately, not ours.
This scam works because most people that buy the glass never really get around to installing it, or if they do and it does not work they think they did something wrong. I have repaired a bunch of these things even if you could remove the digitizer sucessfully as shown in the DirectFix video, you can't get a replacement part. Also, this operation needs to be done in a clean room. Any dust on the amoled panel will bruise it when paired with the touch panel so a successful repair is very unlikely outside of the factory. That is why the repair parts are sold together as a unit.

You can't 'just replace the glass'. The digitizer and front glass are one and the same. They are inseparable.

What you saw was the digitizer/glass being removed from the AMOLED panel. So, as stated before, no, you can't just replace the glass.

I say it's possible but very hard since the thickness is about that of a piece of paper. I saw this on wiki for the superamoled little confusing.

They are integral but can be separated.... just not rejoined and still work. Notice that the places that show the removal videos DO NOT sell a replacement part, just the entire screen. Most of the glass that is sold as a replacement is purchased from overseas. It costs more to return it than what was spent to purchase it. They are ALL worthless. If there are not wires coming from it it can't be a digitizer. If you remove your broken digitizer and are lucky enough not to destroy you amoled panel you still have nothing to replace it with. Most if not all people who buy these things never get around to attempting the replacement, or if they do, they destroy the panel in the process so they never get the chance see that the glass does not work. They think they screwed it up instead of being ripped off. That's why you don't see negative feedback about those things.... It's the perfect (almost) scam.
If you want to replace your glass buy the entire assembly ($95.00) on eBay and at the end of the process you will have a great phone again instead of a pile of junk.... not to mention feeling like you screwed up your phone.
Well what I'm going to do is wait for my brother to go to Verizon then take his vibrant and use his screen and mess with mine. Though I need to buff out the scratches. If by some miracle I do make it work I will post here. I hate when people find a way to fix something that some of us are trying to figure out and never report back how or just say "I fixed it was simple." WTF WAS IT! had to deal with that with my plasma which I finally did find one thread and fix it.

Digitizer and glass are factory glued together under high temperatures impossible to separate.
Just buy the whole assembly for $90 ( i've seen them for $79 once) with free shipping and tools on ebay. I always send offers using ebay "ask a question" and sometimes they give me few $$ off. Then it is a piece of cake since you can brake off the glass and remove the whole assembly that way.
My personal Vibrant is made of all kinds of used Vibrants and screen assembly comes from Galaxy S 4G which is good replacement too if you also want to get front facing camera.

while i don't recommend anyone else try, I was able to separate the glass from the screen. the glass was cracked but the screen still worked so i bought just the glass thinking it would be an easy replacement. so when i came to find them glued together i used my hot-air gun to melt the glue and remove to broken pieces of glass one by one, very carefully. when putting it back together with the new glass i couldn't re-glue it but the back tray holds the screen in place well enough. there was only one side effect that i have noticed so far. the glass is a little loose since not held to the screen, and i did burn the screen a little bit with the heat gun and it now has minor discoloration. but it is possible with enough patience and a steady hand.

don't want to burst your bubble, but that is the digitizer only. i think its really really hard to separate the two from each other. that is why they are so expensive to buy. but hey, might as well try if it is already broke. i understand the lcd is fine btw. i replace screens pretty often and with Samsung, you usually have to buy them fused already. guess it couldn't hurt to try though. good luck to ya, you may need a heat gun and thin wire. keep us updated when it comes in. Yes only for the screen len, not digitizer. I figure I bought it then trying to find the link to replace the screen without digitizer. All of them mention it hard to accomplish. I should had bought the screen with digitizer, but hey I will see how it goes...

just my opinion is to find complete digitizer and lcd fused together, or else you are going to have a bad time. they are very expensive, but it shouldnt be too hard to do as long as you take your time. if you found a digitizer+lens, with out the lcd, it will be really difficult. heat gunning then getting something super thin to slide down to cut between your good lcd and cracked digitizer without scratching the lcd. ive done it on an iphone 4 and the lcd was scratched from it, but it did still work and i didnt break the lcd. if you do lens only, im not sure if you will be able to get the actual digitizer off of the original lens without tearing it an then placing it on the new lens with out bubbling up or anything. i would hate for you to be out a phone for a while. good luck to you sir

Why is it wrong forum and why no? I guess it's right forum but wrong section though (a question should be posted in q&a). In my opinion the screens may be replaceable as they are dimensionally the same. If I'm wrong then please direct me to a source of your information.

Maybe his is smashed like mine was today. Luckily I found a place that had screens for blue s3 and managed to get there before they closed. As far as I know, they use the same screen for the lte variants available here.

I've replaced a few Galaxy S3 screens lately.
The answer is YES, all Galaxy S3 front glass digitizer and lcd assemblies are interchangeable between all US carriers and international versions.
They are all the same international GT-I9300 part number, I opened up a Verizon GS3 today and part of the flex cable that goes to bottom two capacitive touch sensors even say GT-I9300 on it.

Oh and one more thing to add. Do not get fooled into buying those "glass only" front panel replacement kits on ebay for $20-$30. You'll just end up with a nice conversation piece on how you got scammed out of $20-30. I do not even know why they sell those for, they even include these cheap ass tools making it look more legit, like there is somehow a way to actually replace it. It's a full on scam if you ask me. I feel sorry for the poor saps who pick up broken glass S3's on ebay for $350-400 thinking it will only cost them $30 bucks to replace the screen and they'll have a like new S3. Suckers....
It is 100 percent impossible to replace just the front glass panel on the Galaxy S3. The glass panel is fused entirely to the LCD, and the whole LCD is glued to the frame. There is no way to "separate" the glass from the LCD without destroying both.
Bottom line, you need to purchase the LCD and Glass Digitizer as a complete assembly, around $200. To make life easier, you should buy it with the frame also, around $220-240 so you won't have to curse and ***** when you try to pull your old LCD and digitzer from your old frame,broken piece by piece.

Just checked the technician guide for the Sprint version.
Screen is AMS480GY01. So it's the exact same one as the GT-I9300 and any other US carrier (TMO,ATT,Verizon).

Out of curiosity, what makes you think the Sprint version is so different than any other S3 version which would warrant a completely different screen/samoled assembly?
It's obvious you have never repaired the screen on a Galaxy S3 yet you're challenging a senior level technician who repair these things everyday @ a logic board component level. Our repair levels go way deeper into these units, way beyond what Samsung authorized warranty service centers even have capabilities to do.
Yes. You can seperate and change just the glass.
It is 100% possible and in fact not all that difficult to replace just the gorilla glass on the GS3. I have done it three times. If you heat the glass and pry it up with a feeler guage, it will begin to seperate. Once you get it going it will come off quite easily and leave the LCD behind. Here is the toughest part. Now you need to get the LCD/digitizer portion off the frame without snapping it. Turn the frame to the pack and heat it with a heat gun. Now get a long feeler guage under one corner and push it straight to the bottom. Be careful not to go too far and damage the bottom/ribbon portion of the LCD. Now just continue that process across the back of the LCD like a slim jim till its free. Now all you need is a gorilla glass with adhesive. Any reputable parts supplier can get them on request and they come with the "Optically Clear" adhesive already applied. Just spray a generous application of alcohol on the front of the cleaned LCD/Digitizer panel, peal the paper cover off the back side of the glass and carefully apply it to the LCD. You have about 10 seconds to play and align the LCD with all the alcohol on it before it will start to get sticky.

Does this include the screen that cones with the bezel or just the screen and digitizer by itself? Also, do you know if you can change the backing of the sprint lcd/bezel and replace it with a gsm backing (the one that has the sim card opening)? Thanks for your time.

In short, unless you ready to use heat gun and separate screen (it is not lcd) from assembly, possibly damaging it or deal with the dust trapped under, or working in dust proof facility, answer is no.
The front frame assembly is 100 percent NOT compatible between international and nam versions due to different chip sets and motherboard which is indented on magnesium frame to sit properly.

man, I wish I saw this sooner. I did just this and screwed the whole thing up! now I am going to have to pay the big bucks to get it fixed.

If you filed an insurance claim the imei is not clean anymore. Having said that people said you couldn't do it on the s3 either and several did following that video. Give it a shot since you really have nothing to lose.

Was able to remove the glass. I need to order clear double sided tape to make sure their is no space between the lcd and the glass replacement. Didnt come with the glass repair kit $30.

Which video did you use? I found the one by Le550ns and I was going to use that. What screen replacement kit did you get? Was it pretty straightforward? The disassembly doesn't look too hard, I'm just afraid that there will be air bubbles when I put it all back together.
Got one glass off of ebay for n7100 about 30. Im just waiting in the adhesive. I used the same disassembly by lessons on you tube but the inside was a little different due to the radios. Did you order the adhesive yet. Just a tip use plastice so you dont scratch the screen.

Do you have pictures that you took off gradually touch screen digitizer (glass)?
What do you all use to prevent damage to the LCD?
I actually didnt take pics because it was the same as the youtube video for the s3 but I used tweezers that were metal instead of the plastic knife. Word to the wise use the plastic knife it wont damage the lcd. If you heat the optical adhesive to the right temp. Just make sure you get it hot enough and it will melt like butter. I scratched mine a little but you cant tell when the screen is on. The problem most will have is locating the clear optical adhesive with out buying in bulk. Like I said I convinced a locale repair shop to order them bulk from Hong Kong if I showed him how I did it. So he can turn a bigger profit with out buying the 270 dollar part. Good luck and take your time took me an hour to get all off and reassembled with out the glass. I'm still waiting on the tape. The repair shop should get ot some time this week I hope.

Did you have any issues with dust landing on the screen? You do have me confused when you say LCD though. The screen is OLED.
The local shop put a bulk order in for this part clear optical adhesive. When he gets them in I'll let everyone know. I havent attached the glass yet. Thats why I put the title as half done. Best bet is to run hot water in the shower to clear that room of dust. Then clean screen and attach.

Were you able to source that optical adhesive tape? That was Jan 28th. I'd love to be able to purchase a couple from your repair shop. Do you have their contact info?

Hey guys. I have tried this already as I broke my glass screen the day after I got my Gnote2. I ordered everything from E-trade Supply International including the Glass replacement and the optical double sided tape. I had no problems removing the broken glass from the LCD by using a good heat gun, wear gloves as this gets very hot, I went with the E-Trade video on You tube, However this is where the easy process ended. I had a impossible time applying the double sided optical tape. It is extremely high adhesive and I could not get it on without bubbles or wrinkles in it, also anything used to press it on other that a rubber stamp style roller would cause marks and is visible in the end. I thought I was smart as I ordered two of every part needed including the glass and tape, just in case, well after two attempts with the optical tape I still had problems applying it without visible marks. Maybe its just me and not so steady hands or frustration. Either way I ended up filing a claim with Asurion and getting a replacement, Still have the old one as I said it was lost. Any one perfecting this let me know I would be willing to pay to have the original Note2 repaired as I'm well invested in it now. I have the replacement parts. Im in Huntington Beach SoCal ,
I was able to order the glass and an adhesive strip for the edges of the GNote2 (after having cracked my glass). The adhesive strip is good because the glass is held firmly, but the middle "adhesive" is no longer necessary in case additional repairs are warrented later.
As for the repair itself: I did the process as shown on many videos, and was able to remove the old glass, but in the process I overheated the bottom of the AMOLED/digitizer assembly (under the glass) near the home button in the middle. As a result, I now have a yellow tinge to the bottom of the screen (maybe 1/2" in height and 2-3 inches across), but the digitizer still functions properly. This is a very delicate procedure. Another result of having replaced my glass is that my radios seem to be noisy and I burn through battery, even with the screen off. I suspect this is because the radio(s) is(are) noisy and the 4gLTE is constantly trying to acquire signal. This conclusion is due to the fact that even WiFi will only operate if I am right next to the router. Otherwise, I can see the router with the phone, but the phone will not authenticate unless I am directly next to the router, and as I move away from the router, the operating speed decreases quickly.
In any case, be careful doing this repair yourself. I think it can be done, but it is highly delicate and requires significant patience.

Im sure im not alone, but my S4 found the perfect pebble to land at the perfect angle on, and now i have a cracked glass, but fully functional screen. My question is if anyone has used the screen replacement ive found on Amazon for about $20. It does require separating the glass from the LCD and digitizer, but nothing i havent done before, just wondering if anyone has had success on this phone?

I just replaced the glass on mine! The Amazon kit works very well. I used a stand with a clamp to hold the hair dryer. Got the phone so hot it hurt to touch it. But it works great now and looks new. Two things I wish I had known: don't pry up the chrome ring...its not part of the glass. Go inside the chrome ring. Wear nitrile gloves. Higher tolerance for heat AND when you're trying to get off all the adhesive, forget Windex! Rubbing it with the nitrile gloves gets the adhesive off in little sticky balls...just GO SLOWLY and pull up...never pry up. Don't put any stress on the digitizer. Srusbarsky at gmail if you have any other questions.
