Newly created files missing on PC. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, so I am having this problem, any new file/folder created on my phone (such as downloads or save files) donot show up when I plug the phone into my laptop. There files ARE definitely there, but I can only access them on my phone. However on the desktop side, i dont see any new files, infact, I actually see the DELETED folders.
I'm using CM 10.1.3 with Googy Max Kernel 1.7.5

Nope. Checked it. Besides, if it really was hidden, I wouldnt see the already deleted files and folders as well.
I think the cache/database/whatever-its-called that keeps records of all the files and folders isnt being refreshed.
Oh, and Right Click and Refresh doesnt help.

Is it possible your file explorer and pc are looking at duplicate locations after a 4.2 flash??

Nope, thats not the case. Every folder is where ii should be and no files/folders from pre-4.2 firmware are where they were. I moved them into the proper media/0 folder long ago.
This problem is a bit recent. And I am kinda starting to think if its the kernel's fault. Cause thats the only change I've made to my system in the last few weeks.
Also, any way to maually run the media scanner? via the terminal or smth? I googled around, didnt find much.

Media scanner only helps things show on the phone.
If you think its kernel, change back

Nope. I just did. Went from Googy Max 1.7.5 to 1.7.4a (HUGE sacrifice BTW), but the problem persists.
Here's what i've been doing to test it,
Plug phone in -> look at everything -> Unplug phone -> create a new folder -> plug phone in -> look for the new folder.
RESULT: the new folder doesnt exitst.
soo,,
Restart the phone -> Plug phone in -> finds new folder -> unplugs phone -> deletes new folder -> plugs phone back in -> new folder's still there.
So, its not the kernel, what could it be?

You've rebooted the computer?

[Q] phone vs notification ringtone

Why are the two lists not the same? Can they be made the same?
As usual, if my attempt at searching was poorly done (I found only a recommendation for a download, no explanations) feel free to point me to an existing thread.
yeah u can
Apparently I should have been clearer: if it can be done, how do you do it?
sprry but I do not understand what you are trying to achieve. like, you want blahblah.ogg or whatever to be your ringtone and your incoming gmail/sms/notification at the same time?
Ringtones are stored in system/media/audio/ringtones
Notifications are stored in system/media/audio/notifications
Just copy the ones that you want to the location that you want and reboot. It should be able to be selected after it comes back up.
FYI- If you are adding new audio, make sure it has the correct permissions or else it will not show up in the list.

That is correct. Root is required, with a file explorer, or you can make a zip file to flash.
You can also place them under
<sdcard>\ringtones or
<sdcard>\media\ringtones
I cant remember which, it supports like ogg/wav/mp4 or so, it's the standard way for android I believe
I keep forgetting about the media folder on the SD card.
Thanks for the update. It does makes sense to use the SD Card location so it doesn't get overwritten every time you flash a new ROM.

[Q] Copy paste problem on stock ROM

Hi all,
I am having issues with copy and paste on my stock ROM. According to Clipper, nothing goes into the clipboard when I cut/copy text. I've tried this in S Memo, Gmail, Chrome, Messaging and Whatsapp, so it should be a system issue. Is anyone else having similar problems? Mine is running PDA: I9305ZHALI8. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!
Not mine. I've tried copying text from webpage to search bar, and even copied some text from Gmail to Whatsapp.
But...does I9305ZHALI8 exist? Mine is ZHALI7.
Where's your S III LTE brought from? Mine is HK.
Edit: Seen the upgrade. I decide not to upgrade first.
Fix
I hade the same problem, but i found a salution.
First open upp any root explorer app.
data and look for the folder named clipboard.
delite that folder and boot your phone in to recovery mode.
then you fix permissions.
hoped i helped
ansonscleung: I just upgraded today hoping that the update would fix this copy paste issue, but unfortunately it does not. I was on I9305ZHALI7 for almost two weeks.
Curwer: Thanks for your fix! I was hoping I wouldn't have to root but if I may have to do so if it really gets on my nerves...
sry I dont know any other way to fix this, maybe factory reset will but i´m not 100% on that :/

[Q] Can no longer write to Android/Obb in JB 4.2?

So after updating to Android JB 4.2 I can no longer write to the ' SdCard/Android/Obb ' directory.
Can anyone confirm if they are having this problem too? Is it due to this stupid and annoying feature that google has now implemented that they wish to check all .apk files before they are able to be installed? I turned this off in settings but it seems that it turns itself back on again after every reboot?
I cannot write to the directory from my PC via USB cable or even through a root app despite the phone telling me that I have -Rw access to the folder and all of it's subfolders etc.
I even tried writing via Linux but it doesn't work either... even if I try and force a write.. plus I cannot access the internal memory when the phone is booted down...
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Think you need to have root Explorer to write to obb
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Before upgrading I could write to the directory from either my PC or Root Explorer or Solid Explorer. Now I can't seem to write to it at all. So it's not that unfortunately...
R: [Q] Can no longer write to Android/Obb in JB 4.2?
As far as i can remember u can edit the obb directory even without root....but i'm an android kinda novice.
Try another file browser from the phone (the one from rhythm software is very good).
Might also be that problem with directory permissions that get mixed up to which clockwork mod always refers to (they have an option to fix directory problems).
Android, i have noticed, can get corrupted easily, have you done some serious modding to your cel phone or just root and small patching?

I've been trying a string of different things for a couple of days...
I've tried root explorer pro, when I press copy it finishes instantly but nothing is happening.
R/w is on..
I tried solid explorer pro, it instantly says "the file(s) could not be copied"
Tried "Fix Permissions" from CWM...
Tried copying from Windows. It copies up to 99% then says: "The directory is no longer available, it may have been removed"
The connection is fine, and I can copy to all other folders no matter where. EXCEPT for this folder..
I am 99.9% sure that it's due to this annoying new Android Guard thing in the settings that asks to scan everything. Even if I turn it off, I bet that it still has some sort of affect. It's probably just denying all writes from outside an accepted source..
This really angers me. I don't want my phone to have ANY directories that I cannot write to. Especially seeing as I have to often copy files back and forth from this folder when I make updates to the 2 games I am developing..
There was no problem before updating to 4.2 and this Android Guard thing.
I'm willing to try all suggestions.. Thanks

I'm using Android HD Revolution. It's apparently an 'official leaked' one with just the 'improvements' that Mike etc. do.
Thanks also for your reply. I'm trying to keep my device current so I can stay on top of releasing updates, but I really can't do that if I can't fix this issue. I've put it off for awhile now but it's really stalled the development process /tear

If you mean using ARHD 30.* that is not official, that is the leaked version of 4.2.1, that mike has tweaked
Before flashing ROMs, read changelists carefully please:good:
Ok well then I missed the play on words, it's not 'official' but it's a leaked version. Mike, or whoever updates the thread doesn't usually provide a very verbose changelog.
So I take it that absolutely no one here on XDA has any idea as to why I cannot write to this 'specific' area in my partition?
I have the same problem with Galaxy S4. I rooted the device but this didn't help.
I have tried loading files to obb in Windows 7, ES File Explorer, AntTek Explorer - but no results.
Edit://
I solved my problem using AntTek Explorer (root) and the path is next:
Device root/storage/sdcard0/android/obb - then I had permissions to copy files there.
I hope it help.

I forgot to write back. I solved my problem by just wiping my device and flashing a new rom. It ended up being a rom issue. No problems now.
hello there,
wondering if there is anyways to copy obb files on galaxy s4 without root?
or even make the app read obb file from where else ?
buy the app

Search youtube for-How to move OBB file to Android/obb! Android 4.2 Phone! ..
Hope that helps..
reading changelogs doesn't help the problem..
and @leijonasisu probably it would've been bad flash.. but before i say that you should change rom and check once again.. you gotta see if there was any write protection to the specific folder.. so try using an FTP client, if you still cant get access, then you gotta change the rom and try again

fix_mediaDrain.zip - HELP ME!!

HELP!!
When i was running the RGUI ROM (JB) there was a fix zip to use in CWM to fix the 'Media' drain in the battery.
This worked wonders! So i just tried to flash it to my device again, except now i'm running the 'Anonorom' ROM.
It worked. Or flashed without error anyway.
The problem now is that since the reboot, the 'Fonts' have failed to be picked by my apps.
This is most noticibly with UCCW. The widget i created for the homescreen uses about 5 different fonts and its defaulted to 1 default font.
When i open the widget to change the fonts back, it tells me theres only 1 font available; "Default" and that if i want to add more then to put them in 'sd:\fonts'.
I've gone back to my file manager and checked this location and there are LOADS of fonts in there still, so its not as if they've been deleted.
Clearly this is the work of the fix_mediaDrain.zip, which i now obviously regret flashing. And WHO KNOWS what other errors i will now encounter!
So my question is, other than reflashing the ROM (which would be a pain because i've also flashed the JKay framework and other things like that, and amanaged to get the phone to my liking) does ANYONE know of a kind of UNDO fix for this fix_mediaDrain.zip that i can flash.
Obviously i dont even know if it exists,im just praying, but if anyone has any ideas i would greatly appriociate it.
I'm guessing the media scanner has been stopped, or a .nomedia file has been placed in the fonts folder.
So first check if there is a file called .nomedia in this folder and if so, delete it and reboot.
If not, then get rescan media root from play and try to enable media scanner and reboot.
Report back please

Firstly, thanks for your reply..
I've checked the location for a '.nomedia' file and no it does not exist.
I even checked 'Root Explorer' incase the file was hiddenin my regular file manager. Still nothing.
I downloaded the 'Rescan Media Root' app, which looked successful, but didnt fix my issue.
I tried a different app called 'media Rescan Lite', but that too did not fix the issue.
It's not looking good for me is it?
well the obvious path note really is to post in the Rom thread/contact dev and find out what the file does and how it can be reverted, let me know if you don't have enough posts and I will post link to your dilemma for you

I have contacted the developer of this fix to ask what it does exactly and if theres any way to undo the fix.
I have also added a post to the thread where this fix was first suggested to me in the past, incase anyone there might be able to shed some light on it..
I will post my findings once i ear back from anyone incase anyone else ever has this problem...
Thanks again.
SOLVED!!
I have managed to fix this problem!
This is going to sound RIDICULOUS but.....
I renamed the 'Fonts' folder on my sdcard slightly.
I say 'renamed', but all i did was make the filename all lowercase, creating "fonts" instead of "Fonts".
Then, IMMEDIATLY, the fonts on my widget wer back to normal..!
How very odd that this was changed by the 'fix_mediaDrain.zip' throgh CWM + reboot.

[Q] Flashing a 4.2.2 rom

This might be a dumb question, but I am a noob and need someone to please help me out. I just unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone, so my question is if I perform a back up and then Flash a 4.2.2 rom in TWRP recovery can I restore back to the stock rooted 4.1.2? I searched on the forum to see if this question had been asked before, but I couldn't find anything. If someone could please answer my question asap I would greatly appreciate it.
Also if this question was posted in the wrong section feel free to move it or let me know any I will delete it and post it in the right place.
Thanks again

Thanks for the response I read somewhere, that when you update to a 4.2.2 rom the 4.1.2 rom back gets deleted.

No. Going to 4.2.2 moves the sdcard contents to /data/media/0 (if I remember correctly). I've seen some recommend backing up your sdcard to your computer, formatting the sdcard on the device, then restoring the contents after you flash to 4.2.2.
At any rate, everything will still be there: just somewhere else.
Thanks for the reply Simba, do know how to back up your sdcard to your computer and then format the sdcard on the device

I'm going to get really basic, so don't be offended if it seems like I'm assuming you don't know how to do something. I always outline everything exactly for future people who find this thread. I've found countless old threads that have been a huge help because someone took the time to type everything out .
*Connect your device and access your sdcard files by opening My Computer - you should see your device*
Literally just copy all of the contents to your computer. Create a folder on your desktop (or wherever), select everything on your sdcard (ctrl + A), copy (ctrl + C), and paste it in the folder.
Then just delete everything on the sdcard after you've confirmed a successful copy. Same thing - ctrl + A, delete.
After you flash 4.2.2, connect the device again and copy/paste (or drag/drop) the contents of the folder (not the folder itself, but everything inside of it) you created to your device. You'll have all your files without dealing with them being in a different location.
There was some discussion of a way to execute a shell command that would fix the issue. I'm an experienced user; the contents of the sdcard ended up being wiped lol. Save yourself the headache.
By the way, I'm assuming you're on PC by giving those ctrl commands lol. If you're not (on Mac, I suppose), do whatever the equivalent is.
Not offended at all, I really appreciate you simpling it down for me. I have a few small quick questions for you, if I am using a Mac (I have both but Mac is my daily computer) do I just connect my phone and use something like Android file transfer or Htc sync manager to copy all the folders inside the sdcard to my computer? After flashing the 4.2.2 where on the phone do I copy the files I backed up on my computer on to? And if I erase everything off the SD card after copying it to the computer won't that effect the operating system? Especially if I chose to flash back to the 4.1.2 stock rom? Sorry to ask you so many questions but I am really new to this, and I appreciate all the help you can give me the last thing I want to do is brick my phone.

I'm sure that would work, though I have no experience with either. And typically, the directory you see on the computer is the default sdcard location. So there isn't a specific place you need to put it.
And it won't affect the operating system. At boot, Android automatically creates certain folders and files anyway. There are data files that apps use, but if they aren't there, they'll just recreate them. At the worst, a skin (or the like) won't be available if the file isn't on the sdcard. I've seen this with a calendar widget I use. Everything becomes fully functional once the files are back.
I don't really like using that verbiage - "functional," because it is perfectly safe to delete the sdcard's contents. Like I said, Android creates folders/files at boot, so they're not really necessary. Anything that affects the operating system is tucked away in a directory that requires root access :good:.
Big thanks for all the help Simba, you helped out a lot.

You wouldn't want to use HTC Sync as this only transfers files like music, pictures and such. You would actually want to open up your sdcard and copy all as was told. I use Linux now so I don't have to worry about Sync, but I personally think it is a useless piece of software. It is easier to just drag and click, and you don't need a program to do that.
Congrats on entering the world of rooting and customization BTW! :good: It's addictive, be warned! :cyclops:
Okay thanks for the reply, that's actually what it did (drag and dropped to my computer) :highfive:
