my device feels slow what to do? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just played with my friends HTC one I was amazed on how snappy everything is compared to my S4.
I kind of now regret getting the S4 but I would like to get some tips on what to do make this phone smoother.. I've been reading someone said that kernel needs to updated while it might be I don't know really.
What I did so far:
* Factory Reset
* Developer Mode : USE GPU for animations
* Animations OFF (0X)
I clear cache with link2sd app very often I really don't know what to try anymore.

-Install Nova Launcher
-Debloat everything you can with Titanium backup
-Turn off lock screen animations (light effect and water drops)
-Use Xposed Framework and Greenify to hibernate annoying background apps
That's about it. You'll still see stuttering now and again, that's just the nature of Touchwiz but doing those things really did make a difference for me.

Also switch animations to 0.5x it will feel faster than 0x, because with 0x you can still see that millisecond pause between actions that is usually filled by an animation.

Why won't you root? It's hardly dangerous and it will allow you to do many things to speed up your phone. You might not have an unlocked bootloader, but at least you have the ability to root for now so be happy with that

Trust me I used to root since I got my first ever Galaxy S2 International Edition when I was with AT&T.
And anyways I upgraded recently to new baseband from Verizon so there likely is no root yet for that baseband.
And reason why I am waiting is because of warranty I will be waiting at least few months.
That is why I am asking for suggestions here so far the 0.5 looks little better but some apps open way to long like settings or whatever it's not like that on HTC One.

Just so you know there is a root method for the new update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487142
and if you need to go back to stock for warranty purpose there is an easy way here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
It's your decision of course, I just want to make sure you're informed correctly on what's going on Good luck.

Yes thank you I am actually
but if phone gets bricked Samsung won't even touch it because of root I don't care about custom roms. That is why I am waiting.
I don't know if Asurion likes rooted phones because this is my first phone that has warranty from them.

It could be some apps you have running. My coworkers s4 was lagging quite a bit while mine is working flawlessly.Zero lag, no slowdown, stutters, and I am using stock TW launcher. Try looking for apps that may be running in the background.

How is the user experience on a rooted Galaxy Note II? I want to root it ASAP but i do not want to loose out on how smooth a stock Note 2 runs.

is as smooth because we are using the same stock rom so it won't be different on that regard
for root if you don't have a reason to use it don't even bother in my case the phone without root will be like a car without keys because 50% of my apps need root

I always root my phones, but its always a little glitchy (in perspective a like-stock phone still has issues too). I see so much potential in a rooted GSN2, with being able to add more apps to the split screen app options. In this case, i don't want to forego a super smooth user experience for more options but a glitchy experience...That where my concern comes in.

What? It's the same as stock... but with the ability to remove bloat and add modifications. Also, you can add apps to multiwindow without root it just takes a lot more work.

true but, and correct me if i'm wrong, if you don't see that update in time to defer it, it will attempt to DL/install it on it's own.
My understanding is you can still update, because it's stock. Not sure if you would lose SU though.

You can take a ota while rooted but you'll lose root. . If you deleted boat or modded certain things you could brick if you don't revert them back to stock... heres what my theory if you don't have specific reasons to root then you probably don't need to if you're going to be aware you can mess up your device if you don't follow instructions and have a basic understanding of what you're doing .... root alone doesn't give you any additional performance

I've seen ota's automatically download and attempt install but the last few I've gotten had to be installed by the user
I'm sure we could find a ota block by then anyway
also you can trick the phone into thinking it took the update to stop getting the reminder by editing the build.prop

Dumb Question
OK so from my understanding the device has a chance to brick if you root and uninstall the bloat and get an OTA update and allow it to go through.
K so I want root to delete the trash that comes pre installed (bloat as we all call it) However, instead of a custom ROM I wanna Stay With stock, at least until we get a ROM (When we find a way through the bootloader) that can use the SPen and stays stable and updated. untilll that day comes or sammy stops development I want the Stock Setup and there updates just debloated. Here's my dumb question... Without it having an unlocked bootloader is there any way to flash back to stock incase it locks up and bricks, or is it just better to wait for the BLunlock to be safer. love the phone as is I just hate that Verizon puts all there garbage on... it would be one thing if it were optional or able to be deleted, but having to hack there trash out is not cool.

If it soft bricks/gets stuck in bootloop and you can get into odin download mode you can almost always flash back to stock to fix the issue I believe.
Absolutely no issues, I can now get around to backing up the bloatware with TI Backup and then uninstall that crap or delete it either way its going, going, gone. Root is the way.

Did it work before rooting? Rooting by itself shouldn't cause an issue like that. My guess is the card isn't fast enough for the 1080p video data it's recording.
To the OP, something you might find useful in root is that Adblock Plus works only with wifi without rooting. Even if ads don't bother you, they use your data and I assume it's capped for you, like it is for most people.

Is unlock, ROOT and ROM worth it.

Hi,
I've had android devices for years and always kept them locked and stocked.
I've not got an Nexus 10 and was wondering is it actually worth rooting the thing and loading a custom rom?
Will I actually gain anything except be able to change where the home button is?
All thoughts welcome!
THanks in Advance.
If nothing else I would root it. That gives you the option of using programs like Titanium Backup to backup apps and install a custom recovery and have the ability to back up your whole device.
As far as custom ROMS go that's a personal choice. Right now there are not allot out due to the newness of the device, but I'm sure that will change very quickly as Devs stat getting it.
I would root to gain access to titanium back up and ad blockers but beside that there aren't that many great custom roms out there. Stock doesn't have bloatware or any common pitfalls of stock.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
If you are tech savvy, I would highly suggest all 3. You can improve things like battery life by undervolting the CPU and GPU, changing to more conservative governors, and having applications automatically shut off your wifi when your tablet turns off (can't remember if you can do that one without root).
Rom
Yeah, i agree with above opinion. You need to learn things before rooting your tablet. You can check out many rooting videos on YouTube channel to learn about that more easily. Besides, many Google Play apps are free to play.
Check out qbking77 videos on youtube and you will get a how to on the rooting process
Ad blocking is one of the top ten reasons to own any Android device. Root is a vital part of the XDA experience.
It is seriously addictive playing around with different kernels and roms and root apps after you make that first plunge and learn how to do it just be prepared for a little frustration at first. Its very hard to find guides that don't assume you already know the terminology and general techniques! But after that first time, its easy

I was on the fence until i realized the advantages in battery life. I went ahead and did it and havent looked back yet. :good:
You get usb otg support with a rooted device which is crucial for the 16 gb version.
At the same time you dont lose anything when rooting. Especially the nexus 10 is intended to be rooted painlessly and you can revert the whole process too if need be

How so exactly? I'm probably wrong, but I only figured PA to only really be useful either if you want to switch between tablet or phone UI on certain apps, and Tablet UI.

I've got Nexus Media Importer and that's a godsend as I've got the 16gb.
The problem I have now is that I've been using my N10 since November and have just got it the way I like it.
Is there a way to back it up before it gets wiped when I unlock the bootloader?
Also, If I root will I be able to get OTA updates; I want to stick with stock for now.

There is a way to backup most of the stuff you have on your tablet. It won't be a 1:1 copy tho. You will not get OTA updates but you can alwyas easily flash to stock and get them. In your case i wouldnt recommend rooting the tablet. If you are curious though about the possibilities you might unlock you should at least try it

Not the only thing you could do with PA - I have this flashed and LOVE it! this might be more of a personal thing but the ability to change your navbar color (battery, time, soft keys) per app is amazing! Again to each their own but I like this ROM on this tablet - I use the CM10 Nightlies on my phone as it suits it better.
To answer the OP - read as much as you can before you decide to Root and Flash - I believe all three is a must but I like to customize things.

Well now that you have root and a custom recovery you should try all the candy in this forum
Go to the nexus 10 rom section and try some roms. There are roms that change a whole lot like ParanoidAndroid and there are roms with more subtle changes (like mine).
Keep in mind that flashing a new rom will wipe anything on your tablet but its ok because you can make nandroid (complete) backups of your present state using the recovery.
Also i recommend you to try apps like GMD gesture control. It enables you to define custom gestures for nearly everything. (Comparable tp those on the ipad but more customizable)

S4 lag?

Just got the s4 yesterday. I'm experiencing some lag issues with the gallery and mostly the text message app and sometimes other areas of the phone. When I click the text app it opens then if I click to open up one of the convos that's when I notice a big delay. It's like a 1 second delay. This is basically instant on my note 2. Is this a software problem that will hopefully be fixed soon or a hardware problem? Anyone else notice this? That text delay when you open up a convo.. Also SwiftKey seems to lag sometimes.

Try Handcent SMS or Handcent Pro Beta for texting. Much faster. If you use any 3rd party texting program remember to go to your installed applications and click on All and then disable Messaging which is the default messaging application. This way you don't get double notifications. Then drag the icon to your bottom bar and lock screen if applicable.
Ok I got chomp sms. It seems to be the fastest. Why do you think weather bug radar runs better on my note 2 than my s4? The s4 is so much more powerful it seems like everything should be faster and smoother.

no matter what, you can always rearrange your home screen again to make it look how you want...
follow the steps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
that will root the phone. make sure you install a custom recovery like twrp or cwm, and make a backup. then, download titanium backup pro (it is like $6.99), and go in and freeze the apps you don't feel you need. make sure you do your research first as to what apps you are freezing, there are lists of bloatware posted all over the site. that will debloat your phone for the most part. after that, you can start to flash custom rom's with different tweaks built in. cleanrom is really nice, as is hyperdrive.

Perfect timing then. As everyone says, you've got to clean the bloat but it has to be loosened first so heat up a kettle of water and let the water vapor soak into the phone. Once that's done the real clean begins. Just as any bacteria or virus it's got to be nuked to kill it, so stick it in the microwave on high (not "hi") for 2 minutes. if you smell somethiny funky that means all is well and an extra minue or two wont hurt.
Lastly, the dead bloatware has to be extricated from the phone so use a small screwdriver to lift a corner of the glass and then shake out the dead bloatware.. Now its time to root so get a shovel and Miraclegrow ready.
CAMERA or Camcorder turns on Transition Animation Scale to 1x!!!!
hi all,, im a noob i know,,, ive had rooted S3 for a year now, love it! got a new S4 few days ago,, rooted it,, deleted all s-bloatware, deleted all verizon bloat,, turned off all animations, and phone is still super laggy when waking up phone/doing anything,, old S3 runs circles around this S4,, called samsung today & they were no help at all,,called verizon,, they said they're pushing out a update in the next few "days" not weeks to fix an error message peeps are getting and also for the lag but more for the error is what i got from the convo,,-------- ANYWAYS my ACTUAL point of posting here is that i have noticed that every time i open the CAMERA or Camcorder on the S4 no matter if i take a picture/video or close the app right away it automatically turns on the Transition Animation Scale to 1x!!!! i would love to know if this happens to everyone and maybe they just haven't noticed lol,, also noticed that the S4 doesn't lag as much when its plugged in being charged not matter if battery is 100% or 5% but unplug phone and it adds more lag,, DO I JUST HAVE A DEFECT or what? if these things dont hold true on your S4 then i can just have them send me another one,, Or hopefully this update maybe called 4.3.1 for verizon will fix all this in the next few days,, thanks for reading

The 1x transition from the camera bug is well known but I'm not sure if they pushed an update to fix that or not. I have heard that they did push an update to fix the security notification bug, so if you still have it I would try to do the 4.3 update again to fix it (you will lose root and have to do that again though). Touchwiz is by nature pretty laggy but what you're describing is not normal... I would do a factory reset and see if that helps. On mine I have bloat frozen, greenify, etc and it runs fairly smooth. Not buttery, but smoother than what you're saying.
Yeah i've done factory resets and used the verizon repair tool which unroots and puts all bloat back a few time to.. still the same lag.. I did all the exact same thing on my old s3 and my s4 is just way slower.. and I'm sorry I couldn't find anything on the 1x camera thing so thanks for helping.. I do still wonder if the 1x thing is on all carries and models or just on random ones?

[Q] any tips on how to speed up my note 2?

Hey there, I am looking for some instructions on how to speed up my phone. Ever since the latest update for Android it has been getting choppy/hanging and it is becoming frustrating especially when I am trying to get a girl's phone number how do I go about doing this? I suspect I had too many pictures and videos so I packed them all up but did not see any improvement in speed. Any fast ways to uninstall many programs quickly instead of having to do each one at a time? I know that I have tons of apps installed that I don't use anymore. Thank you for any help.

You can use a program like ROM ToolBox by JRummy to do batch operations like that. I'm sure there are countless others, I just happen to use that suite

A phone so hardware rich shouldn't give you those sort of issues. Is your device completely stock?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
yes it is completely stock, never got into loading things like Cyanogen mod because I don't have any need to do so and also afraid of bricking. Thanks kil4thril ill check it out.
You'll have to be rooted to use rom toolbox.
even when you free up your RAM your phone still runs slow?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I'm stock as well and agree since the 4.3 update my phone has noticeably slowed down....very annoying.
Try removing your SD card if you have one installed. If you see improvement provide the brand and model of SD card.
I Can tell you I switched to Illusions ROM way before the official 4.3 ad it was so freakin fast. Now on CM11 and it is still freakin fast. Much faster than any TW rom.
But ya, you may need to at least root to use some tools to figure it out. I have been using Startup Manager to clean up whats loaded during startup. Its amazing how many apps set themselves to auto start at boot. And almost all are unnecessary.

Ok so what now?

Ok so I'm fairly new to the whole rooting thing but I have been studying up quite abit. Lots of really good videos on youtube!! So I'm just looking for some direction on what kind of things I can/should do now that I have rooted my phone. Here is the break down so far:
Rooted - Towelroot
Root Browser Installed
BusyBox Installed
Safestrap Installed and backup saved
Titanium Back Up Installed. Most Bloatware has been safely removed with no issues thus far
SuperSu Installed
Terminal Emulator Installed
CPU Tuner installed but have absolutely no clue what I am doing - still researching this
I think that is about it. So any tipps on next direction would greatly be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance

O yes my S4 is NC5 and stock rom
Make phone calls... or browse the internet.
Mine does facebook good.
All the root, customization , ect. is just to make it do what YOU want it to do. If there isn't something your trying to get it to do that it doesn't... There isn't really a what next, be happy.
If there IS something your trying to get it to do that it doesn't... that next.
edit: though if your not using a custom rom you should probably freeze the program that controls OTA updates. Hopefully someone can chime in with what its called... Been awhile and I forget, and just flashed a rom instead of worrying about it last time I updated my phone.
Like you, I've frozen/killed/uninstalled all the crapware I could. Beyond that, all I've done is installed the Google Launcher. My phone is well behaved and pretty responsive, with minimal lag.
All I would really want at this point is an unlocked bootloader so I could install a straight Google ROM.

I'm on NC5 and have been happily running GPE ROM for quite awhile now. Only problem is the Kernel difference so there's no USB transfer.
Thanks for the reply's. Yeah I don't really game or anything. Heck I don't even Facebook lol but I would like to Play around with getting better battery life and maybe a little speed. Not that I really need too, the response is very good and the lag is only noticeable at times. I want to play around with the CPU tuner but I'm nervous about messing something up and I have not installed a new Kernel yet and from what I have read that is a must.

NO! Installing a new kernel on SafeStrap NC5 is not a must! It will brick your phone! You can use TW based ROMS and one or two very special AOSP Roms, no new kernels though!

I use android tuner for my tuning needs. Really expansive options and a really great app. If you want a really light ROM fort SS GPE ROMs are about 400-500MB. Gets rid of clunky touchwiz and solely runs on Google Now Launcher. Only bummer is the loss of the Touchwiz camera app.

HyperDrive is solid and a good ROM for those newer to 'all this' IMO. I am on BlackBox which is stupid fast and has great battery life but is a little buggy. I've had it on my phone for over a week now and have no plans of taking it off anytime soon. But it's up to you now. Just make sure you wipe everything before you flash, always make a backup beforehand and only flash ROM's that are proven on your device and your bootloader and you will be money. Also, read read read the threads before flashing.

it's called SDM in the system portion... and I would get lucky patcher and black mart alpha installed to. these give you access to everything and all the paid apps too.
Add a tethering/hotspot app.
