Odin Mode Error - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I know this is beating a dead horse but I am relatively new to this.
A friend of mine was doing a standard software update (no flashing), and apparently it got stuck in ODIN mode. Based on the info I have found, it appears to be hard bricked.
I have never flashed an S2 before and I am confused as to what to do to get the phone functioning again.
Can someone post step by step instructions along with what files I need to get this phone working
Thanks

Happy to help if we can, but we need more information.
I assume from what you say that the attempt was to upgrade to the most current operating system via Kies? And during the update, the update failed taking the phone to "odin mode" screen?
Please verify this, or correct it.

Yes that is what he is saying. I wasn't there when he attempted to update the S2, but he contacted me via Facebook looking for assistance

You can flash exactly the same stock firmware that Kies would have upgraded the phone to using Odin and a Windows PC. The only difference is that the installed programs and user settings will be lost.
First go to the Download Repository (link in signature) and find the link to download Odin3 v1.85 near the top of the page, and get that. You will also need the "Samsung USB driver for mobile phones" installed on the Windows PC. If you don't have that, you can get it from the Samsung website.
Now go to the bottom of the Download Repository page and get the latest stock firmware from the section titled I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean).
Boot into recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset. Then, flash that in Odin. If you are unfamiliar with the process, I'll be happy to post instructions.

Thanks for the offer, but he apparently got a new S3 last night as he couldn't be bothered to wait. Kinda rushed the gun I think, but hey not my phone or account so I don't care

Oh man, this advice saved me when I attempted to flash a Siyah kernel on my stock i777. I was able to get back to the stock 2.3 w root using your one click flash, but I am having trouble getting anything else to work. I attempted to flash CMW and various ROMs but I always get the
"e failed to verify whole-file signature" and have gotten no where. I cant even get past installing clockworkorange without seeing that error.
Thanks

"e failed to verify whole-file signature" means you are trying to flash custom (unsigned) firmware with stock 3e recovery. You must install a custom kernel which contains a custom ClockworkMod recovery in order to flash custom firmware.
Please read through the guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!! linked in my signature in order to grasp the principles involved. Just remember that guide is old. If you flashed the latest stock firmware, you should use Framaroot to root the phone, then use Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin Pro to flash the custom kernel. If you are on UCMD8 you can use the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel.
Edit: Just re-read your post - wasn't paying attention. So evidently you are still on stock gingerbread with root. You need to flash a custom Gingerbread kernel. Try this one. You can use the tar directly in Mobile Odin.
Or alternatively, go to the Download Repository and flash the stock UCMD8 from the bottom of the page. Then follow the second paragraph above.

[Q] Need desperate help!

Hey guys, new member here, got a Galaxy S 2 on Three UK
I'm only 15, but I've hacked iPhones, iPods, rooted my Galaxy S, and now rooted my Galaxy S 2.
But I've run into a couple of problems on the way.
My information is:
Baseband Version: I9100NEKD5
Kernal Version: [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
My kernel version is KI8 because I flashed it to it via odin...
But my problems are:
1) My ROM Manager doesn't work, will flash the software, flashed it twice, when I reboot it into recovery, it goes into Samsung standard recovery and says "E:signature verification failed", people have said look at advanced settings but I can't find any advanced settings even though I have premium ROM Manager?
2) My mate with an SGS2 told me about an update, so I tried to update, it downloads successfully, but when I go to actually install it, it says it fails and I need to use Kies or go to a samsung tech centre, but when I plug it into Kies, it says no update available or something...
So, I'd appreciate as much help as possible
Thank you all
Oli
1. Try installing the update manually from booting into recovery mode manually.
2. Once your mobile is rooted , you wont see any update from kies. But still you can manually download it and flash it straight away.
Does your kernal have cwm recovery? Rom manager on its own will not give you cwm. So maybe flash cf root.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Edit: don't use Rom manager.
Take a breath and go to here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Read the 1st few posts on how to do things.
Download any version of firmware you want and flash with Odin.
Then root via cfroot or any one of the custom kernels via Odin.
You should be back in businesses at this point.
Let us know if you need any more help but I think you will be fine.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I'm rooted fine, I have been for months, its just why won't it let me update even when I'm unrooted. Snd why doesn't cwm work either? Ah I have no idea about these things
If you go into normal recovery you don't have cwm installed. Just read the thread that was linked and you will be fine. And don't use rommanager on s2. With cfroot kernel a cwm app will be installed. Use this one instead.
Sent from my GT-I9100
and when flashing with CWM doest work once like getting "E:signature verification failed" message... flash again just after...

DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER .
You require a rooted phone with CWM 4 and above not 3e.
how to
Root + CWM .

KIES updates if their is an update for your phones codes not because your mate tells you .
Either wait or use stock rom .
Stock Roms .and csc

ROUTE decide what update you want flash via Odin as per stock rom post . Then choose root and CWM to match the kernel .

the first thing you ever do before flashing anything on your device is have a stock rom to odin back on. second your not following directions. third your device is not bricked...flashing back to stock will bring it back.
I'm having a similar issue. I had followed adam's protocol for rooting and unlocking using CASUAL; once the process was completed I received a notification claiming that my device was now 'rooted and unlocked.' I then proceeded to download ROM manager and flash clockwork recovery and upon reboot receive the 'system software not authorized' message. At this point I attempted to use the official ODIN provided in droidstyle's guide on root/unlock/etc thread. I see a successful flash of the image but still cannot get out of the unauthorized system software error. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

7.Reboot
I am a tad congfused though. do i connect my phone via USB, open superoneclick on my computer, and use it to load the CM9 zip onto my phone?
How do i install zip once im back in recovery?

To get a custom recovery and be able to flash custom roms (cm obviously included), all u need to do is flash a kernel for our phone model as all our kernels have recovery built in. Just find a siyah.tar file (gokhanmoral has some on his site in .Tar format), download it to your computer, then find a rom you want to flash and download it to your phone. Make sure you have Odin installed on your computer, and the correct drivers installed for your phone. Also make sure usb debugging is turned on on the phone. Put the phone into download mode, open Odin on pc, plug phone into pc, open the pda link in Odin, select the siyah file, and flash that puppy. Then when done, disconnect from pc, reboot phone to your new recovery, and wipe data / factory reset. Then flash your rom!

I do not understand some of this, does odin work for Macs? Also, when you say "download (the ROM (in my case CM9)) it to your phone" do you mean use the phone browser to find and download it? Or what?

Odin only works with Windows pc's, so on Mac you'll need to use Heimdall. Probably the Heimdall command line version is best. You can download the firmware of choice to your computer, and then transfer it to the phone over USB, or use dropbox and wifi, or something like that. You can download it directly to the phone if you prefer.
The guide referenced by Vpr2006 has instructions for using Heimdall as well as Odin. It give you the basics. In general you should 1) root 2) install custom kernel 3) use ClockworkMod Recovery to install your firmware of choice.

This approach to customizing your phone involves the following steps:
JANUARY 2013 ROOTING UPDATE: In mid December of 2012, Samsung released an over-the-air update for the SGH-I777UCLK3, taking the operating system to version 4.0.4. Around the same time, XDA developer Chainfire released an application called ExynosAbuse APK which can be used to root the SGH-I777 with SuperSU, without the need to use a PC. ExynosAbuse APK is the best, and probably the only practical method for rooting UCLK3 without flashing some other distribution. In addition, it seems that this application is a good way to root any phone running 4.x operating systems, and possibly phones running 2.x operating systems as well. Be aware, there are possible risks involved with using this application. Please thoroughly read and understand Chainfire's thread linked above before using his application.

I do not seem to see specific instructions as to how to go about this though, and I don't think it specifies how to install CM9 specifically.
Also, I have a mac, but I can access a PC if need be.
Thanks

If you don't feel comfortable using the ExynosAbuse Exploit by Chainfire to get root access on your existing firmware, then flash the [Heimdall][Odin][Stock][Root]UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root which is 4.0.3 ICS with root included.
Once you have root, use the instructions in that thread to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, preferably by installing Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro. I would suggest you use the "AJ Newkirk/Siyah v3.3.3d ICS" kernel, which is somewhat old but will only be on there long enough for you to flash your firmware of choice. Then enter recovery and flash your firmware, following the instructions in the OP of the firmware thread. As previously stated, you will need to use Heimdall on the Mac, or borrow a Windows PC and use Odin.

[Q] Custom Bindary Counter: No?? Please help

Hi
I am trying to install CM11 on my Galaxy S3 International, but get the following error when I try and update my Recovery and OS
When I boot into Download mode, it shows the Custom Binary counter as "No", which also stops me from adding any custom ROM's or Recoveries via Odin, which doesn't even detect the phone. USB debugging mode has been enabled
When I boot up into Recovery, it immediately shows the little android character on its side with a red exclamation mark, saying that no command was opened or given
This phone was given to me stock, as it wsa used by a family member who never messed around with anything on it except making calls and sending messages. It still has the stock Samsung ROM on it, android v4.3
I have tried sideloading Superuser, Recovery and CM11 to it, but that just gives me a signature verification error as well

Thanx for the reply tallman, but I have actually done this loads of times before, and am quite familiar with the whole setup. I currently have another S3 I am using with a ported version of MIUI v5, and used to flash CM versions constantly to my phone when I got bored. If you read the first part of my post, you will see that I mentione Odin does not recognize the above mentioned device, so I cant flash a custom recovery to it. Currently I am stuck as I cant flash recovery to it, and its native stock recovery also gives an error when I boot into it. I need to remove/reset the binary counter (have tried Triangle Away...but need superuser....which I cant flash cause it gives signature verification errors) and then see if it wont enable me to load recovery via Odin, and then flash CM via recovery. Any tips as to how I can fix the No option on my Custom Binary Download option?

Lol I did read the first post but as soon as you mentioned flashing custom roms with odin then this say's to me lack of knowledge
First thing first why are you trying to reset binary counter when it is already set to normal? The screen shot you provided shows a normal download screen.
Your problem is not the binary count it is Odin, have you tried another version of Odin or another recovery like PhilZ what error if any is odin giving?

Lol...okay, I meant for the next part of the sentence to only mean "recovery via Odin"
Anyway, its the newest version of Odin. And while it may seem normal to some, this is not a "normal" load screen according to my previous experience. I bought my own S3, stock, and flashed roms to it almost immediately. The Custom Binary part is supposed to read either 0 (when new and unchanged) or any number after that depending on the amount of custom roms flashed. Odin does not detect the phone when in Download mode. It escapes me now the exact color and description at the top of the Odin window, but its supposed to show both color and text in one of those windows to indicate a succesful connection, which it doesnt

No offence about your experience but100% It's supposed to read "no" not 0. Also whatever it say's 1,5,8 this would not stop you flashing with Odin.
I would seriously look at another version of odin or reinstall drivers or have you tried this tool >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...msung-galaxy-s3-unified-toolkit-v8-0-t1703488 << make sure kies is not running on your computer also (if you have it) it can interfere with Odin.

Help: I have a AT&T SGH-I777 Galaxy S2 - Been rooted and has had ROM on before

Behind the battery it says SGH-I777 Front is 4 button AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 that has Been rooted before
My brother was playing around and playing with different roms and it has sat in a drawer and left alone - I want to get it working again to use for traveling when I go to Brazil for work.
When it boots up the SPLASH screen says GT-I9100 - I KNOW THIS IS WRONG before you make 100 comments - the It is a SGH-I777 phone - I get it. Save those comments and I dont know how this rom is on here or how it works.
I can go into Android system recovery <3e> if I hold power and volume up
and download mode if I hold power and volume down
in download mode it says Product name: GT-I9100
Custom Binary dopanload: yes (2 counts)
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Can someone tell me how to blow all of this away and to get it to a point where I can install a working semi updated rom?
Thanks. I have tried several threads and no luck.
Someone along the way installed an I9100 rom on it, and the install package they used included the I9100 secondary bootloader. The text that you read in download mode comes from the secondary bootloader, and that is why it says GT-I9100. Since you have 3e recovery, it now has the stock kernel, and maybe have been flashed back to stock, but without replacing the secondary bootloader. That is my best guess.
I would suggest that you flash the latest available full stock firmware including the secondary bootloader. That would be Jelly Bean, UCMD8, which you can get from the Download Repository. See the link in my signature. Once you flash that, you may still have the I9100 splash screen, but download mode should indicate I777 again.
After that, you can run stock JB, either with the stock kernel, or with the AJK v4.9 No Swap Kernel which will run stock JB just fine. Or you can install the custom firmware of your choice.
Either way, you should probably root using Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit, and then use Mobile Odin Pro or Mobile Odin Lite to install the boot.img extracted from the AJK zip file. Once the install is complete, boot into recovery and flash the AJK zip file because otherwise the buttons will not work. Then after that, you can either stay with AJK plus stock, or install a custom firmware.
Hope this helps, and if you have any questions, I usually check in here at least once every day or two.

Thanks. Ok - I downloaded I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean) from the download repository and installed it. Splash screen says samsung and then goes to ATT globe and then starts. Error right away says gmail something not working - Wifi doesn't work - about device Model Samsung - SGH-I777 Android 4.1.2 Broadband I777UCMD8 Build JZ054K.I777UCMD8 Kernal 3.0.31-1154545-user
To go into download mode I had to hold volume up and down and plug usb cable and it now was
product name SGH-I777
custom binary yes (3 counts)
current Samsung official
Power with volume up and down without SUB to get the android system recovery that shows <3e>
Do I need to install CWM or TWRP to install AJK v4.9 or do it via android system recovery?

You need to use Mobile Odin or Flashify in order to install the custom kernel/recovery. You will not be able to flash the AJK kernel in stock recovery, so go to the Play Store and get one of those apps (both have a free version). You must be rooted first, so make sure you followed creepy's steps above.
Once you install AJK you'll have not only the kernel but also a custom recovery (CWM).

Well I have superuser now - worked with no problems..
I installed Flashify it asked for superuser I said yes but when I select boot image it just hangs - I never get the option to select the image. I have uninstalled and reinstalled.
I have installed mobile odin but it needs internet access to add some odd-on APk and I dont have internet on this phone - BECAUSE WIFI wont work. I tried to download mobile odin add-on for flash but still doesnt give me that option. I looked and couldnt located the correct add-on for this phone to install firmware
mobile odin lilte is v4.20
Flashify is 1.9.2
Not sure what option I have

Did you root using Framaroot as creepyncrawly suggested? Just installing SuperSU won't root your phone, so that's likely why you're having issues obtaining root. You must root first, then install SuperSU. Then you should then be able to use those apps that call upon root privileges.

yes, I install framaroot version 14.1 exploit results Success but I installed superuser and not supserSU - I have installed superSU now
I reinstalled mobile odin lite and mobile odin flashkernal and still no luck - still says that I need additional add-ons for this phone..
Installed Flashify and I granted root access via supser SU
In the flash menu zip file I get to choose and for recovery image I get a choice but if I select boot image it locks up and does nothing then says flashify isn't responding do you want to close it..
I just want a clean rom without all the bloat and working WIFI
So I installed the kernal via CWM following the instructions listed in for AJK v4.9
Kernal now says 3.10.0-R93.AJK_v4.9_NoSwap-root
So wifi still doesnt work - Buttons work now
How do I fix Wifi?
Was wifi working before you started this process, and you were able to use it? Because, after you flashed the UCMD8 stock, wifi should have been working, and you said it was not. That makes me think that you may have a hardware issue with the wifi.

On an old ROM the wifi was working - I used this for phone for almost two years until I went to my Note 2 then to a Note 3 and it sat in a drawer. It had SHOstock on it before but my brother was mucking around with it to install Cyanogen and after I started this process.
I'm still not clear when the wifi was working. Was it before it sat in a drawer, or recently when your brother tried to install Cyanogen?
In my experience, wifi has always worked after a fresh install of any official stock firmware, and definitely after a fresh install of UCMD8, unless there was a hardware issue. So if wifi is not working, I would try another fresh install of UCMD8, and if wifi is not working there, I would try a fresh install of another stock firmware, perhaps UCLE5 or UCLL6 (4.0.x), or even the original UCKH7 (2.3.4), all of which are available in the Download Repository. This should give you a definitive answer whether it is hardware or firmware.
