[Q] Galaxy SII stuck on boot screen - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I have the following problem:
I have an Samsung Galaxy SII and have never flashed anything on it, just did Upgrades via KIES to 4.1.2 (I think). It´s not branded by a Telekom Company or anything. Just a stock Phone from Samsung.
A few days ago I used that phone, put it into my pocket and after 2 hours when I wanted to use it again, it was stuck on the boot logo (you know the Galaxy GT9100 .... Screen)
If I have the power cable attached it just displays an empty battery and the circle is NOT "circling". Battery symbol is not getting "full"
Now I can´t get into the recovery mode BUT I can get into the download mode.
I already tried to Flash with ODIN but it always gives me an error like this:

Honestly I don´t care about the phone. I just want the data from my phone.
Does anyone have an idea?

Well you won't be getting any data of the phone unless you get it to boot/function normally, so first thing's first. Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread. Try the stuff in his thread until the phone successfully takes an Odin flash.

Hmm. How about you flash CWM on it and make a backup of the Stock ROM with it?

seems like its bricked it self.. mYbe an emmc failure.. i got my s3 with the same problems.. tried everythng but nothing work.. send it to samsung and they tell me that motherboard replacement are the only solution.

Nah, I think he's just missing something while flashing via odin.

but his issue are same as mine, except mine fails at odin with 'cant find any partition'

Hahaha, no partition is a screwed mobo definitely!

yeah , that s3 was a victim of exynos SDS ..

Gee there's been an awful lot of unfounded assumptions made in this thread over the past 15 minutes

just curious but isnt the emmc limited to 4.0.4 ?
Going through the hoppers guide now

Alright I can do whatever I want. Odin always Fails at the NAND write step.

Which means one of two things:-
1) I don't know how much of Hopper's thread you read, but I'm fairly sure he makes the point that fixing cases like these is often a matter of persevering. You keep trying stuff until it works. The first 11 flash attempts might not work, but for whatever reason the 12th works. You can keep doing that if you want, or it could be
2) The NAND really is borked. If that's truly the case, then yes, only a motherboard replacement is fixing it (either a new one by a service centre or a 2nd hand one by you/a local mobile repair shop), and you can kiss goodbye any chance of recovering data from the phone.
Now, if it was my phone, I know what I'd be doing before I gave up & declared it a case of option 2 (but YMMV, obviously).

right, so is the storage fixed on the Mainboard and not a seperate module (like harddrives in Computers)?
So in case I switch the Mainboard I cannot take the old storage to the new Mainboard.

Correct.

Thanks for your answer but you lost me a little here.
As I wrote the recovery mode isn´t working at all. Only the download mode.
Already tried flashing the siyah kernel but still no difference in phone behaviour.
What exactly do you mean with "mount usb storage while phone connected to pc"?
When I connect the phone to the pc, Windows always tells me that there is a device that can´t be recognized (don´t know the exact error message) and that leads to no access to the phone by the Windows Explorer, Kies, ...

if the data in the phone is not much important than try this its my own fix.

Odin stucks at NAND Write Start

Hi there!
First...sorry for my bad english:
My S2 was on Hydrogen-ics rom...a few minutes ago i decide to go back to stock. Factory Reset, Cache/Dalvik cache cleared, format /system...all done then I started Odin and choose PDA -> I9100XWLA4_I9100XXKI4_I9100DBTKH1_HOME.tar.md5 (its from samfirmware)
...everything was OK, then i reboot and flashed siyah kernel (v2.6) via Odin (PDA). Reboot again...everything was ok...
So I decided to go to checkrom. Reboot -> CWM -> Factory Reset ..and here something goes wrong..it stucked at wipe data or wipe cache (doesn't know exactly) after a few minutes I do a hard reset ...since then my S2 doesn't boot anymore. Galaxy S2 Logo appears with yellow triangle and that was it. CWM won't boot, too.
Download Mode still works, but when I try to reflash the stock rom from above it stucks at <ID:0/004> NAND Write Start!! .

Have you try repartition?
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100
No, not yet. I've read that this is the last choice I will have. I have read that I should try to flash a 3-part Firmware (searching for one now .. :/ )
edit: another question...i've extract a boot.bin from "I9100XWLA4_I9100XXKI4_I9100DBTKH1_HOME.tar.md5"
..does it makes sense to flash it as new bootloader via Odin?
Try to use another computer. Install kies on the new one ant try again wiht odin.

i think it isn't stucked, it's just taking a while, i also got that problem but i just left it, and when i came back it's finish.

Lets ur phone charge connected to pc... Than hold vol up + home button + power button flash siyahs Kernel now restart phone and again but now hold vol down + home + power button u should now see CWM clear everyhing flash a new rom through odin or cwm...

If you read my posts you will see that CWM was broken. And the actual situation is that my phone do nothing. Screen stays black..whatever I try (Jig, DL-Mode, Recovery-Boot, normal boot, connect to pc, connect to another pc with kies installed)
But thanks for help
Just called to amazon, send it to repaircenter and we will see... I've only said that my device won't start up/charge anymore
From what I've read, your mistake was doing the repartition ...
That's the one thing that if interrupted or somehow failed (you stopped it during the process) will trash your bootloader and therefore preventing the phone from entering download mode using either the keys combo or a JIG.
If you hadn't messed with repartition, I'd say you should try on a different USB port, different cable, different PC and eventually you'd be able to flash a kernel, a ROM, whatever, but never compromise the bootloader and thus still be able to enter download mode...
I forgot to say that there was something crazy after I flashed Siyah Kernel. While the "Galaxy S2-Logo" appeared the logo split into to parts...one side go to the left, the other to the right...it was very strange, after it has splitted there was green pixels all over the display...and they growed up..I mean first there was only one green pixel, and before I did a reset there were over 40 green pixels...
after reboot everything seems to be OK.
Don't know I do not know if it has something to do with my main problem.
Tomorrow my beloved S2 go to tech-center

dude u should remember one thing that while flashing with ODIN u should uninstall KIES from that compyter because it will try to interupt ODIN!!
At this point ODIN was still banned from my harddrive
But never had problems with the combination of both programms before.
edit: but...of course you are right.
Good news
It seems like that my device has been repaired by w-support and it is on its way back.
work that they had done (translate with google...sorry )
Work carried out:
Soldering, replacement of faulty components, software update
edit: Ok phone is here new case and camera (maybe one part?) Stock 2.3.6 is installed.. phew
That's good news idd.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy SIII crashed completely!!! PLEASE HELP

Hello, I have a Galaxy S3 international >>
these were its infos before i did anything (image #1) >>> s14.postimg.org/y8tcan24x/2013_04_10_14_30_33.png
and this is what happened (image #2) >>> s13.postimg.org/undpmewzb/image.jpg
i admit, i think it's my fault: before doing anything else, my phone was just having the sudden death syndrome known to many S3 users.. so i took someones advice and downgraded the software to 4.1.1 using ODIN and it worked (actually didnt help as much at it said cz the phone kept crashing :S but the phone worked normally considering that i changed its software)))
two days later, what you see in image #2 suddenly happened:: i can do nothing with the phone!! but you need to know that the screen works...
Tried to re-install the software with ODIN >> I can access boot into Download/Odin Mode using (Volume Down+Home+Power Button till the screen turns up) and do everything but>> odin FAILED!! and I guess because USB DEBUGGING MODE wasn't enabled and I cant access the phone to enable it.
Also>> tried to reboot phone into Android Recovery mode to "wipe data/factory reset" using (Volume Up+Home +the Power button) >> doesn't work and gives the same white screen!!
the only thing i can do with the phone is to access boot into Download/Odin Mode and do something from there... the phone is not prompted by the pc when connected but recognizable by ODIN cz its says ADDED!! ...
recently.. this is what ODIN started showing:
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/008> Initialzation..
<ID:0/008> Get PIT for mapping..

PLEASE HELP ME MAKE IT WORK STEP BY STEP... THANK YOU
Usb debugging is not the issue. That is only in android. Not download mode.
Yes, this is sds. You need to send your device for repair now. This is what happens when people downgrade to ics.

[Q] NAND Recovery

Hi all,
This is my first post but I readed this forum since two months and it's awesome the level inside the forum!
I write this lines because I have a problem with a S3 of my sister-in-law. I summarize all what's happened:
- She was in one point of (Argentina, I don't know where exactly) and his SG3 stops running. She carry the smartphone to one shop. After hours she went to get his SG3 and the "technician" said I'm sorry I broke your phone, take 80€ to repair the screen of smartphone (she doesn't know anything about technology...) she took the money and she gave the SG3 to me to repair...
- When I startup the phone I seen an screen that show this message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
-I tried to enter in recovery mode, without success... I tried to install stock firm and the only message that I see in Odin is:
<ID:0/003> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/003> FAIL!
-After hours searching I think that the NAND is in RO and can't install anything, I tried to follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030 but in the first boot chain I get this message for lot of time and do anything more: <ID:0/003> NAND Write Start!! .
-I tested in diferent PC's and used diferents USB wires and anything...
What can more I do?
Thank you!!

[Q] GT i9300 , cannot mount efs and stuck in a bootloop, Cannot reset counter

Hi guys,
I'm in a bit of trouble. A few weeks ago I successfully installed CM 10 and everything was fine and working normal.
Then (I can't remember how) I must have somehow repartitioned or corrupted the file system on the device.
I am now stuck in a boot loop and can only go as far as download and recovery mode.
The message I get in recovery is 'E: failed to mount EFS'. I can see my EFS directory has been deleted/moved/corrupted and I believe I have done way more damage to the phone trying to repair it than before.
I have tried everything I can think of, stock ROM, different ROM, nandroid back up etc.
Although I can still get to recovery and download mode im pretty sure its done.
I have tried various tool kits such as the Samsung galaxy s3 toolkit and EFS professional etc, aswell as using the Android SDK and runing ADB commands through that to no avail. Half of the solutions I find on here that have helped other require USB debugging mode to be enabled, and I can't enable it because I cant turn the phone on, and there doesn't seem to be a command in ADB that will allow me to (Failsafe from Samsung).
I then arranged for teh phone to be serviced but I need to reset the flash counter. I cant use triangle away as I can't get into the phone and I can't seem to be able to do it through ADB. I don't think USB jigs reset the flash counter on the S3.
Its very frustrating as I seem to get somewhere then realise I need something else which I don't have access to.
If I can't repair the phone then I can send it off, but I need to be able to reset the flash counter,
Is their anyone here that could help me out? I have learned more about phones in this short period and its very interesting. well if your phone works..
I would be extremely grateful, Thank you

I don't think that you can now recover it by yourself. have you tried pit file to repartition it again, i think your partitions are deleted.. why don't you once try pit file to repartition the phone, else you wont have any other option than paying money to repair it..
Imo you flashed with wrong pit. Try m0.pit.

Is this the correct pit?

Also, is their anyway to reset the flash counter without using triangle away or to force run triangle away through ADB (which I doubt as I don't think ADB will automatically start the required function etc as its not booted into adroid)?

Im sure its not SDS just bricked from the start and more damage done to repair it. Now it won't boot into recovery after trying the .pit which was a last resort. I need to send it off to Samsung but the count is 15, ROM is Samsung Official and the last line is custom. (Im not with my phone I'm just remembering.)
Im sure its beyond repair i just need to reset the flash counter.
Thanks
i got you bro use this pit file it will fix it

[Q] SII (Vodafone NL) with "Download mode" only, stuck on NAND Write Start!!

[Q] SII (Vodafone NL) with "Download mode" only, stuck on NAND Write Start!!
Hi all,
I have a SGS II from Vodafone NL that was not vendor locked, unfortunately I don't know more about it as I didn't care about firmware, kernel and the such. The phone is 2y 9m old. It all started with a low battery reboot, battery was at 0% and while plugged in was restarting shortly after boot, some too demanding applications that wanted to do their thing immediately after boot. This happen 2 or 3 times, on one of the boots I saw the android updated (green robot with spinning mesh), it was really short and I recall something about updating one file or so. Didn't pay much attention, the phone booted up properly when the battery reached 1%. After a few hours in which I used the phone a few times I found the phone shutdown and on boot I had the boot logo loop. Not knowing what to do I went into "Recovery mode" (Vol up + Home + Power) and issued a factory reset. It did something and I didn't pay much attention to it. There were a lot of errors related to /system /cache and something else that was not accessible. I was thinking that the on-board emmc might have died or at least part of it is. After the factory reset the phone has only the battery logo and "Download mode" (Vol down + Home + Power) only. I don't know what kernel I had nor what OS version it was on, I've updated via Kies some time ago, autumn 2013 maybe.
I've downloaded from sammobile:
I9100BULPG_I9100VDFLP9_I9100BULP8_HOME.tar.md5 Feb 2013 Ver 4.1.2
I9100BULPG_I9100VDFLP9_I9100BULP8_HOME.tar.md5 Sep 2012 Ver 4.0.3
When trying to upload them with Odin 1.85, 3.04 and 3.07 they fail at "NAND Write Start!!" with no other error message, just the normal succeed 0 / fail 1 which I find kinda dumb. Tell me what the error was, the device surely has said something or it timed out. I've tried this on 2 different computers both with Windows7.
After all this failed I tried flashing:
Siyah-s2-v4.1.5.tar
Same error from Odin but something changed in the "Download mode", now it says "CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (1 counts)", before it was 0. The current binary is still saying Samsung official. The phone is still not booting and the "recovery mode" is still not there.
My questions:
Is there any way I can connect to it via adb and maybe have a shot at looking at it's disk layer? Saw that dd can be used within the adb shell IIRC. I do have some linux/unix filesystem recovery experience.
I saw that they use the .PIT file to change the sector allocation and avoid the damaged parts of the emmc. In order to do that I need to somehow give it a booting kernel. Is there any way of doing that? Maybe boot another device that can attach the emmc.
Should I try heimdall? Can it connect to the device even in "download mode"? I need to install one linux machine for this as I have only windows and BSDs around.
Is there any way for me to reliably find out the model of phone I have?
Are there any other things I can try to recover it or can I consider it's emmc dead?
Thank you.
Pit files can help ...as u already knw..
No pit file flashing doesn't needs working recovery..
U can flash pit file by odin itself...
Did u tried flashing a pit file?

Haven't tried a pit file as I thought that I need to know which part must be taken out from the sector allocation first. Is it just trial and error?
If yes, which pit files should I try?
Thanks.

On the sticker I have:
Model: GT-I9100
SSN: -I9100GSMH
FCC ID: A3LGTI9100
IMEI and S/N
Don't know what to make out of these tough.
Why ? It's pretty self explanatory. It says you have an I9100, so you have an I9100. The rest of that stuff on the sticker is irrelevant.
So...if you do decide to flash a PIT, make sure it's an I9100 PIT or you'll definitely end up with a 116gm plastic paperweight.

I found this thread with PIT files http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886, but as I said, I'm clueless as which of the I9100 models this is and which archive should I chose, don't really remember if 8GB/16GB/32GB, plus there is a i9110g there. I know this sounds ignorant but I was with my phone, will not happen in the future.
Also there is this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823918, which is supposed to be a partition scanner but I find it confusing. In my case I can't flash anything on the phone so it seems impossible to use the scanner, is that correct? Are there cases in which parts of your emmc can die but you'll still be able to boot a kernel or have/use "recovery mode"?
Status update.
I tried to flash Siyah-s2-v5.0.1.tar with both Odin 3.07 and 1.85.
3.07 said the same error immediately after NAND Write Start!! I had to close Odin, remove battery and upon restart the phone has the triangle present but only download mode works. It incremented the CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD and CURRENT BINARY has changed to CUSTOM.

1.85 just stayed for ~20 min on "NAND Write" and had to close it myself. Again had to remove battery has phone was not rebooted by Odin. Again the "BINARY DOWNLOAD" counter was increased. The phone still has "download mode" only and the triangle present on normal start.
I don't understand why Odin fails to reboot the phone and returns error upon writing.
I'm still a bit reluctant to use PIT files as I still don't know for sure which one to chose. Keeping it as a last resort tough.
Will try different kernels and I'm still searching for a bootloader to try and write, maybe somehow I can get it to "recovery mode" so I can use adb to see the partitions it has. Can't find any link for this.
I didn't backup EFS partitions and this is my biggest concern in using PIT files. If I understood correctly writing a new PIT file will delete all partitions. Is it possible then to still recover the device?
If anyone has any ideas ...

Here' s the bible, did you read it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
Every single word there is important.
Also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2345831 has some good tips, but you might have already read it
Here's my experience with a very similar problem: i got the same Odin error, nothing could be written and eventually decided to flash PIT file... Result: phone HARD bricked, no download mode anymore. I suppose the PIT file flashing failed as all of the rest.
IT's the last resort as, if it fails, your phone wil be completely dead (at least for the software part), no charging anymore, no download mode, and you will either need to revive it with a JTAG or change the motherboard.
SO before doing it, try and try everything slowly and using your mind.
Now going back to my problem, it was an emmc hardware problem, even JTAG riff box couldn't revive it (errors pointed to hardware fault) and i had to change the mainboard. I bought a phone with broken display for around 50$ and replaced my mainboard. In a service center you will likely be asked at least 150$.
