My Droid Razr MAXX is Bricked and I really need my phone! Any ideas out there?
Ill start from the beginning, list every single Mod I have done to my phone, where it failed, and why it failed, and see if there is a possible solution. This was my FIRST EVER SMARTPHONE. I had had a samsung basic flip phone for nearly 8 years but I am a huge computer nerd (Windows Specifically) and thought I could learn how to modify an Android. This Bricking and Erroring of my Razr MAXX all had to do with me downloading and installing the wrong ClockWorkMod .zip file, it was CWM_on_boot_REMOVE.zip instead of the correct install file. I wasnt paying attention to the attachments here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385283. If you look at the bottom you will notice only the remove file is there, because I did not see the other link in the post ITSELF to the CWM_on_boot real package download site. So here, in great detail, is what happened:
Early October 2012 - Recieve Droid Razr MAXX from Verizon. Comes with Android ICS 4.0.4
Mid October 2012 - Razr MAXX rooted using easy ICS root, works fine
Early November 2012 - Bought Motomizer Expert Edition to make overclocking easy, works fine
Late January 2013 - Cought wind of official Jelly Bean OTA and was deciding whether or not to start doing research and get it done
Early February 2013 - Cought wind of Jelly Bean OTA ROOT now possible and so I decide to make the push that night
Early February 2013 - Noticed that on Jelly Bean, many apps run slow/lag quite a bit. Games that are normally so easy to run (i.e. Fruit Ninja)
Early February 2013 - Get fed up with my lagging apps and decide its time for a custom ROM
Just Yesterday - (See Below...)
So what happened Yesterday was I installed Razr Bootstrap.apk and downloaded (or so I thought) CWM_on_boot (ClockWorkMod Recovery - N BOOT) package from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385283. I hit "Bootstrap" in Razr Bootstrap, it said "successful", I hit "Reboot Recovery" and it reboots into ClockWorkMod Recovery. Well, Turns out it was the CWM_on_boot_REMOVE package instead and not paying attention in ClockWork Mod Recovery, I hit "Install from SD" (NOT "Install Update from SD"). Here I am thinking everything went fine and dandy, then the phone rebooted after the "Removal"... Now it gives me this screen on boot:
ENCRYPTION UNSUCCESSFUL
Encryption was interrupted and can't complete. As a result, the data on your phone is no longer accessible. To resume using your phone, you need to perform a factory reset. When you set up your phone after the reset, you'll have an opportunity to restore any data that was backed up to your Google Account. (Below appears a small square button, it says "Restore Phone"
I have tried the reset button, it goes to the reset screen and appears to work, just to reboot to the "ENCRYPTION UNSUCCESSFUL" screen yet again, and does this over and over no matter how many times I try. I have a Micro-SD adapter and so I re-loaded the Jelly Bean OTA .zip file as well as the real CWM_on_boot package but cannot install them from the stock recovery mode screen. AP Fastboot goes to a screen where it says my phone is "Locked".
That is all the information as far as I can remember, if you need specifics feel free to ask. I was wondering if there was a way to reverse my CWM-on_boot_REMOVE error and simply remove all of the tweaks I have ever performed (i.e. get rid of modified kernel and JB and install original ICS and factory Kernel) and restore the phone to the day I pulled it out of the box back in October. After this mix up, I dont ever plan to use custom ROMs or OTA leaks ever again. Just a simple root on stock phone with some overclocking will do for me.

Well, did you tried to reboot the phone in AP Fastboot?! Turn off the phone and hold down "Vol Up + Down, then power" the AP Fastboot screen will appear.
If you can access the AP Fastboot screen, then your phone can be restored. Download the RSD Lite 6.1.4 and flash a Stock ROM to your phone.
I bricked my Razr Maxx trying to upgrade my ICS 4.0.4 to the JB leak, but the process failed. My phone was booting directly to the AP Fastboot screen.
It will restore your phone, but you will lost all your data.

I tried to find RSD 6.1.4 but only found version 5.7 but it said it was compatable with the Motorola Droid Razr MAXX so I downloaded and installed it onto my laptop. I located the official stock rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767255. I tried flashing this ROM and it failed at step 12/16: "boot.img". So I tried Droid Razr Utility 1.8.2 and again everything wen well except for 'boot' but on this utility it gave me the error:
writing 'boot'... INFOPreflash validation failure
FAILED <remote: >

I couldn't use the Razr Utility 1.8.2.
Always having failures when "writing files".
Believe me. Search for a Stock rom which is compatible with your phone (Maxx XT910) and correspond to your country. I'm from Brazil and all of the roms I tested couldn't be installed with RSD Lite (fails on step 6th). I found a brazilian stock rom (no carrier logo or apps) of ICS and installed it.
I can't post any links here (newbie yet), but the RSD Lite 5.7 works too. But you need to find a compatible rom.
___________
Another important hint. Be careful with it. I don't know if the phone can be charged when is bricked. Try to not keep it turned ON unnecessary.

Hey there guys. Thank you all so much for the help. After a few days of intense stress and toying, I finally got it online. A couple of great guys over at the AndroidForums helped me through every step. Pay special attention to the last tread but pay attention to them all it has important info that WILL help others. Here is the thread (below). How would it be possible to spread this information to allow others who needed help like me, to gain access to its information?

I think you need to get the original jellybean rom from http://sbf.droid-developers.org/pho...SDLite) then u're phone is fully operational.
I think you need to get the original jellybean firmware then flash the xml file using RSDLite(assuming you have RSDLite) then u're phone is fully operational.
I am having the same problem

I tried flashing the zip but the process failed. I was using RSD Lite and it now reads an error on the RSD Lite: 'Failed flashing process: 6/16 flash motoboot 'motoboot.img'' Phone returned Fail.
Okay I have similar problem,I think. I can enter fastboot on phone, But all of a sudden my computer can't install the fastboot. So I can't use rsdlite or any other utility out there. Any suggestions??? Or is this phone completely bricked now?

unbricking xt912
PLEASE any help will be very much appreciated.
my xt912 got bricked some time ago... i recently saw a way to unbrick it using RSD LITE and i thought i might as well work on it myself..
long story cut short, rsd lite keeps giving failed when it get to the 12/16 step
kept reporting failed:boot flash failed...
now i've seen some people reporting failed but not at this stage so the solutions like "delete get var lines"" dont apply
i really hope someone has got the answer....
appreciate any consideration by yáll...

Hey all,
I just purchased a Motorola RAZR XT910 it's original carrier is Claro. I am using the phone in the USA on Carrier AIO. I would like to root the phone and get the android version updated to at least 4.1.2 but would like to get it to 4.2.2 if possible. I have been unable to find any video's or tutorials on doing this for this particular model of XT910. Can anyone here give me the correct method for rooting and updating this model of the XT910. I don't want to brick the phone so I am bring my question to the experts. I have seen other XT910 tutorials but none seem to work on my XT910. I have include phone details below.

First of all, you must be on a Windows PC. Then you can upgrade you device to the official JB 4.1 Motorola firmware. There is no official JB 4.2 from Motorola for our devices. BEWARE there is a chance of bricking your device if something goes wrong. Do it on your own risk.
First you have to download some stuff.
Motorola Device Manager (Contains the Motorola USB Device Drivers) from here
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
RSD Lite (Use 6.1.5)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42057363/RSDLite_v6.1.x.zip
Then follow this tutorial and fastboot upgrade your device to JB 4.1
1.Find the appropriate JB 4.1 Fastboot file for your device from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2231289
or here
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_spyder/list.php
(BEWARE you will brick your device if you use a wrong Fastboot file)
2.Rename it to something like 9.8.2O-124_SPUL-17_Claro.xml.zip (short name without gaps, because RSD has a limit of name characters)
3.Install Motorola Device Manager
4.Install RSD Lite
5.Run RSD Lite
6.At Filename click the button and browse file XML Fastboot Image you downloaded
7.Turn off the device
8.Press and hold Volume[+] + Volume[-] + Power buttons at the same time until an option come up
9.Choose AP fastboot
10.Connect Razr to PC/laptop
11.Wait until it is recognized by RSD Lite and all its components are installed on Windows
12.Click Start
13.Wait until the process is done (do NOT turn off the PC or disconnect the USB, this will brick your device)
14.Done
After that you have to root your device in order to install custom 4.1 or 4.2 or 4.3 or 4.4 ROMs.
In order to root follow this tutorial
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40901777&postcount=30
After that install Safestrap custom recovery following these instructions
http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/how-to-safestrap/
Now you are ready to flash/edit/do whatever you want on your device.
You can find more on Droid Razr Android Development XDA Thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-razr/development
Anyway, click Thanks if I helped you
Resolved
Thanks for all the help. Issue has been resolved.
After installing Safestrap and restarting the phone it doesn't seem to want to boot into my stock rom anymore. I just see the Motorola logo.
I can enter the Safestrap menus just fine.
Are you sure your waiting long enough?
Motorola logo comes first, that's the bootloader.
After that is the safestrap hijack menu. If you choose the option on the left you go to recovery. If you chose the option on the right or leave it alone for 15 seconds, you boot normal.
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk
I've waited over 5 minutes, still only getting the Motorola icon sending out waves.
I've managed to install CM 10.1.3 on ROM slot 1 though, so i at least got phone function back for now. Still kind of worrying that i have no stock access
Does anyone have an idea how i could get it to boot normally on stock again, or maybe just reset stock while keeping the CM rom intact?
Done:
Follow: http://droidrazrroot.com/
then install the SafeStrap:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2427125
If you bricked, use the fastboot and recover back to 4.1 and try again. Make sure you only install one safestrap, preferably safestrap 3.7.x detailed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2427125
Don't install the safestrap version detailed in http://droidrazrroot.com, that version is too old to run KK.
KK requires TWRP 2.7.x.x or higher or for our purposes safestrap 3.7.x or higher
If you want to flash back to stock just follow the fastboot instructions detailed in http://droidrazrroot.com/
That will remove all custom recoveries and set you back to a full stock, i think there will be like one OTA update after you flash back with fastboot.

Same here...
I just get the same issue, as the fellow man (OP).
Moto Logo waving loop. Can enter Safestrap mode and Recovery but I cannot proceed to install a custom ROM either. on ROM Slot 1.
Tried to install the 672.180.41.XT910.Retail.en.EU but the system keeps nagging around on multiple errors (Sideloads, enforced package signatures and permissions [but actually I think that I lost root from my attempt to reinstall stock and now APFastboot Device Locked, as also cannot fix permissions in Safestrap]).
Tried the RSDLite with the Retail OTA mentionned but RSD is keeping asking for an xml file (which as I much as I tried to find it in the package, it's nowhere near to be found).
Tried to find an actual OTA for the 672.180.41.XT910.NonEFIGSRetail.en.EU to put in SDCard and launch a fixing procedure, but I cannot find a single working link on the web and Motorola is not offering it.
Anyone with an actual idea to resuscitate the Razr ?
P.S: RAZR MAXX UMTS (GSM) ICS 4.0.4
Thanks in advance. :cyclops:

First of all, THANK YOU! Because of you (and your precious link), I did got back to work my little beast and a working device , so you're the :good:
P.S. I'm actually good at the Windows eco-system but the Android one (and Linux) is still an unexplored terrain to learn (which is actually a good thing, as it gives you plenty of new things to learn). And now that I have the file, I will try to go on the Custom Roms side, by updating to JB first.
Thanks again for you precious help!

Hi guys!
This is my first time to post a thread in this forum, I just bought a Samsung Note with model SHV-E160S, Android Version 4.0.4 and Build# IMM76D.VH29. I know that this is a Korean Variant and I'm using it here in Philippines (I can send SMS -- Openline). I don't know if this phone is already rooted, I don't know how to check.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to upgrade this phone from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 then later on upgrade it to Android Lollipop 5.1 and I don't know how. It will be a great pleasure if someone help me or direct me on what should I do.
I'm totally new to android devices and I'm not familiar on how to upgrade, update or root an android device.
Thanks!
Hello guys, any ideas? Thanks!

You'll be able to find your firmware here https://mega.nz/#F!IxJTDDQQ!TTgzxjX8d7EnzemoIj0ogg
4.1.2 was the last official update from Samsung for your device. If you want to update to newer than that, it will have to be done via updating with a custom recovery and custom rom, such as TWRP recovery and CyanogenMod 11 or 12/12.1.
Follow upgrade instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and sub your firmware file instead of N7000.

Thank you es0tericcha0s for this information.
What I'm trying to do right now is updating my SHV-e160s from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 using Kies v2.6. Unfortunately, I'm getting this error "Failed to run firmware upgrade: unknown error.". Until now, I'm afraid to update my firmware manually as I don't have much knowledge to do that.
1) Download firmware and Odin
2) Open Odin as admin
3) Load firmware in PDA or AP slot depending on which version of Odin used
4) Boot to Download Mode and plug in your phone
5) Once Odin recognizes it ( will show highlighted - COM:xx where "xx" is any number, doesn't matter which ones) hit start
6) Grab a drink and a snack and come back in 10 minutes or so
7) If device bootloops, reset in recovery
Once the files are downloaded, the whole process takes less than 10-12 minutes or so. Everything you need is in the guide I linked to besides the firmware you need, which is in the Mega link. If you need a video guide, there are dozens on YouTube. I find it much easier to use than Kies and once you have it working, then there are not many things you will do that restoring with Odin and a factory reset won't get you out of.

Hello, sorry I forgot to ask, will this root my device? I'm afraid I might bricked it.
No, this is just the official update. As long as the download is good and you follow those directions, you won't do anything that won't be easily recoverable if it doesn't work right away. Soft bricking is not a big deal and nothing you would do here would cause anything worse unless you unplug the phone in the middle of something important.
---------- Post added at 09:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:20 AM ----------
And because you'll probably ask... It's easy to root. Just download Chainfire's SuperSU zip, put it on your phone's storage and use Odin to install TWRP recovery (just like you do with the whole firmware package) , boot to recovery before it boots to the OS and install the zip. Reboot and enjoy.

Hello again es0tericcha0s, I haven't tried the instructions that you gave me yesterday as I'm still downloading the firmware, last night I encountered an issue after enabling my Bluetooth, something like "NFC Service has stopped." just keeps on popping up. So I turned off the bluetooth then restarted my phone, it went well for a while.
After that, I enabled my 3G Cellular Data to check what was NFC service error is, after a few minutes, I lost my signal, phone turned to No Service, then in Settings -> About Phone, I got an Unknown Baseband.
EDIT
I got No Service since last night up until now.
EDIT Oct. 13, 2015 9:49 AM +08:00 Manila Time
I manage to update my phone from ICS 4.0.4 to JB 4.1.2. But still, my baseband is Unknown and I have no signal.
If it did that before you tried to flash anything...that doesn't sound good. Hard to say without testing it, but kind of sounds like the baseband chip (hardware issue).

I also though of that, hopefully not.
When I first got the phone, my gf sent me our pictures via bluetooth , no issues occured. After a while, I noticed that there are so many photos of the previous owner (around 1000+) and mp3s (around 1000+ also). So I connected the phone via usb to my pc and deleted all those pictures and mp3s inside the My Computer -> SHV-E160S -> Phone (Computer\SHV-E160S\Phone). After doing so, I started to encouter some issues, when enabling the bluetooth, the phone hangs and reboots then the error 'NFC service has stopped' keeps on popping up, until it went Unknown Baseband.
Now, the phone keeps on rebooting similar to the symptoms that it gets when baseband version is unknown.
I'm looking for solutions to fix the unknown baseband and saw the Back up and Restore EFS, I just need to root the device to try this fix. Maybe I'll post an update whether if I manage to solve this problem or not, if it didn't fix the issue then maybe the problem is the baseband chip. what a crap!
This is my reference for the EFS Fix

Thanks!
Rooting will be easy. Just install TWRP with Odin and use the SuperSU zip from Chainfire. Process should take like 5 minutes once everything is downloaded.

So I need to install TWRP first before rooting the device? Also I'm planning to use a rooted stock firmware which is 4.1.2, I just don't know the difference between UH24 and MH2, I've read that UH24 is already old and it's better to use a MH2 build and what is the Recovery UH24/MH2?
EDIT:
I forgot, I cannot check my current Baseband since it is still unknown.
EDIT: 12:30PM +8:00
I managed to get my Build#, it is MH2, I'm currently looking for a rooted 4.1.2 MH2 download link.
Way faster and easier to use the method I outlined, but either way should work.

Sorry, I'm really a root virgin here. While following your advise, I'm also currently looking at this guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924535. I'm done downloading Tegrak for MH2, a small problem I encountered here is I don't have a folder named 'sdcard' in my phone, so I created one and copied the 'Kernel' .zip, also I copied it to usbStorage folder.
I'm about to flash the 'Recovery' .tar to my phone. Hoping a success result
Should be fine. Your phone's internal storage is seen by the OS as /sdcard. Doesn't matter where you put the file as long as you remember where it's at so you can navigate to it through recovery to install.

Finally! I'm done rooting my phone, though I encountered another issues again. My Menu Button and Back Button does not work.
UPDATE: 4:08PM +8:00GMT
I think I found the problem as to why my Menu button and Back button doesn't work. I'v check my Baseband and it is -> E160SKSJMH1 and my Build # is -> JZO54K.E160SKSJMH2. Am I using a wrong FW as supposed to what I should be using? Which build should I install, the MH1 or the MH2?
Also, the Tegrak Kernel I've used is Build 48 for SHV-E160S MH2. I've also tried factory resetting the phone but the issue still exists.
Thanks!
UPDATE: 4:41PM +8:00GMT
Managed to fixed the issue by updating my Touch Firmware. Cool!
Hello!
First post here!
I just revived a Cubot Note S and am pretty happy with the performance.
I've searched around for a while and am unable to root the device, I've seen one other post on XDA regarding a successful Root on 5.1 but am unable to find any information on how this is achieved.
I've tried Kingo, King and Root Genius with USB Debugging an OEM Unlock enabled.
If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great,
Thank you
Sorry, don't have any kind of solution but I just wanted to say I'm in the exact same boat as you. Been trying to root my Cubot for days.
Good News!
Aftee alot of digging and flashing several recoveries I have successfully rooted the Cubot Note S.
Ill put a simple guide here to help:
Its your responsibility what happens to your phone, Mine works flawlessly, but be careful out there!
Requirements:
Cubot note S on 5.1 Lollipop
Smart Phone Flash Tool & MTK Scatter file (for the cubot) & Super SU.zip
buzztechnica.com/2016/03/how-to-root-and-install-twrp-recovery.html?m=
In the first paragraph is a download link. Download the rar and extract it. All you need is the Smart Phone Flash tool and the MT scatter.txt. THE RECOVERY IN THIS DOES NOT WORK!
Modified TWRP recovery (there is omly one that works!
android-hilfe.de/thema/root-und-twrp-fuer-cubot-note-s.753414/page-2 << Post number 37 has the Mega link to the working recovery.img file
MTK VCOM drivers
spflashtool.com
Look for link that says "Download MediaTek VCOM Drivers" get the self installer package.
About recoveries,
Make sure you use the Modified one and not any other. The bundled one in the FlashTool and the other 3 floating in the internet do not work as they do not register touches. These are useless.
Okay, so now you have the files i would create a new folder with everything you need. So thats the Flash tool, scatter file and the modified TWRP recovery and phone drivers.
Before you start. Copy the SuperSU zip to your phone somewhere. Also enable USB Debugging in the developer options. Finally TURN OFF YOUR PHONE. i.e hold power, power off. Dont plug your phone into the computer yet
On your computer install the VCOM drivers first. Now to get the drivers installed I had to modify the batch file to work on Win10. If your on Win10. Right click the install batch file and edit. Remove all the lines regarding the OS check and save and run the installer. A command window will notify of the install success
open the Flash tool. Now, the second box asks you to select a scatter file. Select the one you have.
Ensure the dropdown box is selected to Dowload Only.
Ensure that ONLY recovery is ticked, you dont wanna flash anything else accidently!
To summarise... now, you should have super su.zip on your phone. Smart phone flash tool setup with the scatter file and custom recovery loaded. Your ready to flash!
Before plugging your phone in click Download. Now plug your phone in. And you will see it will flash. Should take a few seconds youll see a bar going along the screen. A box will pop up saying download OK!
Now, apparantly your phone is meant to boot without any assistance. Mine did not. So in this case. Unplug from PC. Remove phone battery. Put back in and tey to enter recovery (Pwr + Vol Up) <<< tip, dont hold them in too long as my phone just kept resetting. Hold about half a second while the screen is on then let go
You should now be in twrp recovery. Swipe the notification and proceed to flash the super su zip. Once complete, remove your battery and DONT press restart. It wont work and your phone will freeze.
Put your battery back in and boot normally, you now have custom recovery and Root!!
Enjoy!
Sorry about the links. Im new here. Modify the links and paste in browser
.... or you simply navigate to needrom.com and seek for "Cubot Note S". Then you'll find a working TWRP-recovery for Android 5.1 and even 6.0, a beta ROM for Marshmallow (6.0) and the not yet published ROM from 11-07/2016 for Lollipop (5.1). To flash with SP-Flash-Tool from your Computer.
Cheers!

I tried these, but as stated, all those Recorives did not work due to not recognising the touches. plus, the 5.1 stock ROM is stable, where as the 6.0 is still beta. I'd rather stick with a stable ROM.
6.0 ROM and the 6.0 TWRP may work, but its untested for me. hence why I've targeted 5.1 in my tut

No problem, Its actually quite straight forward once you've found the working files. At least now there is a tutorial on the internet for this phone which is complete and tested
moha u are awesome actually, how the hell did u find out that?
It took me days, i rooted with iroot - woorked, then it unrooted itself, did again, didnt work I Tried millions of different Recovery.img nothing.
Tried urs - works perfektly with 5.1. Does not with 6.0.
But thank u a lot <3 Edit 2: 6.0 works with the img of: http://www.needrom.com/download/cobot-note-s-6-0/
