[Q] Is it bricked or dead? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I went to bed Saturday night without charging my phone and woke up to what I thought was a dead battery. I plugged my phone in, but the charging light did not come on at all. I thought the battery was really dead and needed to be plugged in for a bit before it would activate the charging LED. 5 days later and still no charging LED. I'm using the original HTC charger and have confirmed it to be working by plugging in other devices and they have successfully charged. Some interesting things:
1. Day one, I had it plugged in for about 8 hours and went to see if I could boot into bootloader and it did. However, the phone became unresponsive and shutdown after a few seconds and would not boot again.
2. Holding down the power button + volume down will sometimes get me one vibration and then nothing. Other times the back light on the hardware keys will flash a few times but will not boot.
3. Holding down the power button for 20+ seconds does nothing.
Device info:
I was S-OFF running CM10.2 build 9/16 from Deck
So, is this a bricked device or dead battery/bad charger port? The only reason I thought it might be bricked is some issues I was reading about regarding CM10.2 and TRIM.. not exactly sure though. Any help would be appreciated. I'm on Ting so getting the device repaired isn't an option.
Thanks guys

TRIM was removed prior to the build you're on so that's not the issue. If the charging port doesn't seem to be loose, I'd say your issue lies with the battery itself.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE

Sounds bricked to me, since you've tried charging so much. Seems similar to a lot of the ways other people found out they're bricked.
Sent from a Carbonated EVO

Is it possible that dirty flashing wouldn't remove the TRIM stuff? I've been dirty flashing since a July or August build. If that's not the case, I think I might go ahead and just pick up a replacement battery and hope that's the issue. I'd rather do that than buy a whole new device for now.

I just wanted to update this thread in case someone else runs into the issue. I bought a new battery and put it in the phone. Each time I was plugging in the battery, the device would boot to the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen and then shut off. After lots of troubleshooting, I found out the issue was with my power button. The button was stuck in the pressed position so it kept turning itself off. I ordered a new power button and I'm back up and running. Hope this helps anyone that might come across this.

[Q] Rezound Bricked?

My Rezound is broken
I unlocked and de-sensed it, but that was when the unlock first came out and it's been working fine since, so I don't thing that's the problem.
The phone won't come on, and when I plug it in the charge light doesn't even come on. If I leave it plugged in, then take the battery out and put it back in the charge light comes on for a few seconds, then turns off.
I was at a new years party the night before and I may have laid down on top of it while it was in my pocket, but the water sensors are fine, and I don't remember it ever getting wet.
I notice there are a lot of connections between the phone and the back cover. Is it possible that something could be bent and these connections aren't being made, so the phone refuses to do anything? I tried putting wires across them where they would normally be connected, but it didn't seem to help.
So what do you guys think? Is there something else I can try? I guess if it's totally broken then they can't tell that it's unlocked, so I could try getting a replacement :/
First off, I wouldn't have put any wire across any of the antenna leads like that. Second, if the phone is not coming on with the cover off then you may have another problem. The phone should turn on without the cover. You just wouldn't have signal.
My opinion, try another batter if you know anyone who has one. Or maybe go to your VZW store and see if they will let you use one of theirs. If the battery/phone is too hot the LED will blink orange, once it is cool enough, or full enough to turn on/charge again it will become solid. The fact you get an indication when there is no battery leads me to believe there may be a problem with the battery itself.
with the phone off, pull the battery for several minutes. Then put it back in and plug it in to the charger. Do not try and turn the phone on. If the charge light comes on and stays on, just let it charge for a few hours until it turns green.
I've read of rezounds dying from the battery going completely out. Screws it up somehow. Verizon also has thunderbolt external chargers for 5 bucks. You could use that to charge the battery (it fits), then try and turn it on. If it still won't turn on after charging, put the battery in and try and boot into the bootloader menu (power on and vol down at the same time), from there you can restore your nandroid or flash another ROM if it will boot to it.
I tried leaving the battery out for a few minutes, and then for the rest of the day. No dice in either case. I'll try to get an external charger tomorrow :/
Thanks for the ideas, I'll let you know how it goes.
Mine died overnight. Same symptoms, charging light for a few seconds then nothing. I plugged it in, let it sit for a while (didn't time it, but not more than 15 minutes). Unplugged it, then: held power, volume up and volume down all at the same time. It booted up, as soon as the screen came on, I plugged it back into the charger. Running fine now. Hope this helps someone else.
Went to Verizon today. I bought another battery and ordered an external charger. Swapped in the new battery and the phone started right up
Now I just hope I didn't screw anything up messing with the antenna contacts :/

After getting the new battery, does the orange LED come on while charging the phone when powered off? I replaced my battery after having the same problem and now the orange light does not stay on while the phone is charging when it is powered off. I guess it's no big deal, but it bothers me.

Yeah, it still works just fine. I turned it off just now and then plugged it in to check and the charging light came on immediately.
Maybe the battery is faulty or you got a thunderbolt battery by mistake and the phone is confused? Otherwise I have no clue why that would happen :/
I have them same problem. My phone is completely dead, won't turn on and a orange light comes on for 3 seconds and goes away and nothing happens. What do I need to do?
Sounds like your battery died. Pull the battery and let it sit for a few, then try to boot it back up and plug it in immediately.
I was reading a thread about this last night on RootzWiki. Dude did a lot of testing, came to find out it was ClockWorkMOD keeping a completely dead battery from charging at all. Is that the recovery you have? If so, I would put AmonRa on, try that.
Agreed, almost definitely a dead battery. You can try this:
1) Take out the battery and put it back in
2) Hold down power and volume down to enter the bootloader
3) Immediately plug the phone in and leave it there for 10 minutes or so
4) Reboot the phone now that you have enough power to make it through booting
This should work as long as your battery is completely dead.
My suggestion for the future though is to buy an external charger and a second battery. That's what I did, and now any time I accidentally let my battery die I just swap it out and I'm good to go at 100% while the other one recharges. Also an external charger is the easiest way to fix this if your battery is too dead for the above method.

Also, remember that if you are using Clockwork Recovery for some reason that makes the phone not charge when its powered down. I had the similar issue where i couldnt get it to charge or come on at all, i put in a battery from my TBolt and it turned right on, switched Recovery to Amon Ra (Blue one, not the Red one) and from there it charged no problem!
worked...

this worked for me! thank you!! also to come to think of it, the problem happened after installing clockworkmod recovery. so there certainly seems to be a connection

This absolutely helped me! I'm really liking this Rezound I picked up but the damn thing is also just very temperamental in general. Still a fantastic underrated device overall though.
My wifes d2g did that once. I ended up taking an old charger, stripping the ends off and taping it to the contacts on the battery for 30 minutes. It charged it up and after that it would charge thru the phone again. A lot cheaper than a new battery.

Amaze 4G wont turn on....Bricked?

So I got my Amaze on Friday, rooted and installed Energy Rom on Saturday, and phone just died on me on Sunday.
I was in the middle of playing Scramble with Friends and phone froze up on me. I had to take the batter out to reset it since the power button was not responsive. After I pulled the battery and put it back in, the phone would turn on.
So i read and read and found out people usually bought new batteries since the most likely culprit was a dead battery. I have a friend with the same phone and tried his battery. I saw the HTC Logo come on for a brief second and then that was it, nothing else. Phone died again and did not turn on (under his batter). I recharged my battery in his phone and tried that as well, but no luck.
Any ideas what went wrong and what I can do to fix this?
The phone is completely dead and not turning on. So that means I can't get into bootloader and recovery.
About Phone:
Unlocked Bootloader
TWRP recovery
Faux Kernel
ENERGY Rom
Any incite on this would be great. Thanks in advance!
Plug it in to the wall charger for 30-45min. Unplug and pull battery again. Put battery back in and you should be good...
Don't be alarmed if the orange led light flashes... It's normal when the phone dies. Be happy you're using twrp and not an old recovery that doesn't have charging while off

Thanks, i actually read those threads before i posted. I think there are more threads about that but i tried all options and none seemed to work. I will try plugging it in the wall and pulling battery out but the battery is at a 100% charge right now (i can confirm from a friends phone). However, if its just a glitch, then i will try the wall charger trick.
Thanks.

Thanks - tried the battery solution but unfortunately it didn't work out for me. Phone just refuses to power up.
Assuming its an official brick.
i have a similar problem, well my battery had charged and running fine for several months, so i unplugged the battery to put my sim on it, and plug it back in when it was booting up it froze on the boot logo, so i took off the battery again so i can reboot it
and ever since it wont come back on, wont either go to the bootloader, so i let it charged all night and nothing happen no led blinking or on, so got my friends amaze's battery to test and it would not do anything at either, right now i am waiting for my replacement, but i hate the fact that this had happen to me
oh wow - well i ordered a replacement as well. I really hope it doesn't come down to a software issue and they don't end up covering the device since it has been rooted.
If the phone is completely dead and non-booting, there's no way for T-Mobile to determine if it's rooted or not. Only until it gets back to HTC to be refurbished could they (HTC) find out but at that point it won't matter to anyone anyhow.
And it couldn't possibly be a software issue. There's something physically defective inside the device that caused it to die.
htc amaze 4g refuse to turn on.
hi all, i'm a newbie here, though i have always loved the XDA. I unlocked my bootloader last night, downloaded and reinstalled my fav apps since i didnt do a backup. while i was downloading the XDA app, my fone freezed and eventually went off. When i tried to get it back on, it got stuck on the white htc screen and later went off after some seconds. It has refused to come on till the time of this post. i really need urgent advice.
I was yet to install a recovery software before the tragedy occurred.

[Q] Phone turned off, won't turn on:

All:
Tonight my 4GLTE was plugged into it's charging cord and was at about 95% battery. I received a phone call, picked up the phone and pushed "answer". When I did the phone turned off and it won't turn back on. I've tried the "on & down volume" many times and nothing will happen. When I plug the power cord in the charging light isn't coming on.
I have had no problems with the phone. I'm on the Tranquility ROM and everything has been perfect. When I went through the S-off process back in Dec. the phone "bricked", it acted exactly like the phone is now, will not turn on, no lights come on, nothing. The great people at Dirty Racun walked me step by step through their procedure to unbrick the phone and it started up and has been perfect from Dec. til tonight.
I'm baffled and wish like hell this phone had a battery I could pull. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks,
DC
I take it the capacitive lights don't light up when you hold the power button down for several seconds?
Leave it plugged in overnight and try to power it on in the morning.

I know is very frustating cause It's happened to me as well.
I did some searching and found some tips. Nothing solid.
Leave the phone charging even though the led doesn't turn one. Sometimes for me it will revive after a while being plugged.
Other is to hold the power button for a very long time. 1-2 minutes and hope it reboots.

Nothing lights up, that's why I described it as being dead. I'm not a novice with these phones as far as rooting and installing ROMs etc. One item I left out last night is that in the last few weeks I've had to "move" the micro usb connector around to get the charge light to come on. It would always light up and charge but had probably gotten worse, not better. Also I have my Evo4G (which I just activated so I have a phone) and with this charge cord I also have to move it around to get it to activate the charging light. I'm going to buy a fresh micro usb cord this morning in the hope that the new cord will make a difference.
I'm really not optimistic that a new cord will change anything. I declined to buy the insurance for the phone when I got it in Dec. I;ve had bad experiences with Sprint and their cost to repair the Evo4G even with the insurance. I think I'm going to install Unix on my netbook again and try the procedure that Dirty Racun walked me through when the phone "bricked" last Dec. They brought it back to life for me although this time I'm afraid it has something to do with the usb port causing the phone to shut off and die. As I said last night, the phone was charged to 95% when the call came in and I picked the phone up and it suddenly went black.
I love this phone and having to go back to the Evo4G is a real step backwards, plus I've got lots of data on the internal SD card of the LTE that I need. I'm in pulling my hair out mode now....thanks for the suggestions, if anyone thinks of anything else please let me know.

Went through this a few days ago. Battery was at 40% and i was playing CSR Racing from the market. Anyways, my phone got super hot so i ended the game and went back to my home screen....few seconds later screen went off and phone was unresponsive. Nothing i did could make it turn on again tried for a few hours. My sister has a evo lte as well so i took apart our phones and switched her battery in place of mine and voila it booted up. Didn't expect the battery to just go out like that.

That's interesting, my battery has been excellent. I do remember a few weeks ago it getting really hot while charging but it's been fine ever since. I've got the phone apart now. I needed to replace the glass screen and bought, what I thought, were replacement parts for the lcd-glass screen. I've just found out from a video that the lcd and glass screen come together as one part. I don't know if I can take the broken one off and install the new glass screen or if I have to buy the lcd and glass. I'm ticked off because the ebay seller claimed this is all I needed to replace a cracked screen OR an unresponsive LCD touchscreen. I'm glad I didn't pay much for the glass.
Thanks for the info about replacing the battery.
DC
Update: I talked with a Sprint rep at a corporate store yesterday and he told me to bring the LTE in and he was certain HTC would fix/replace it under the 12 month warranty as long as there was no physical damage "not turning on could be blamed for". I told him damage didn't cause it to suddenly go black while plugged in at 95% charge when a call came in.
I'll have to replace my screen before taking it in although the truth is my screen had a crack in it for 2 months before this happened and had nothing to do with the phone bricking itself suddenly.
Any updates?
My wife's phone had this happen at a ridiculously inconvenient time.
Here's what to try:
1. Pseudo-Battery-Pull: Hold power button for 15 seconds, this will force the phone to shut down (if it works). Try powering back up. If nothing, then:
2. Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power for 2 MINUTES, and then release. That should reset the battery charge logic. (Note: this will only work at all if the phone is truly powered off) If that doesn't work:
3. Disassemble the phone, disconnect the battery. Wait 20 seconds and then reconnect the battery, and reassemble the phone.
Step 3 worked for me. Hope this helps somebody!
Thanks,
Josh

[Q] HTC EVO 4G LTE W/root and MeanBean bricked

Ok I couldnt find where I should post this, so if anyone can help me that would be great. I rooted my phone a few months back. I had to flash the ISO seprate. my phone is S/ON if it matters. So to start the story off, I have the MeanBean ROM and for some reason it was laggy here lately and was acting weird. I was talking to my friend last night when I fell asleep. I woke up thinking that my phone had died because it was low when i went to bed. I had zero issues when i went to bed, I plugged it into my charger and the orange light didnt even come on. I pressed the power button and it still didnt come on. my friend tried 3 different chargers and we determined it wasnt the charger. it was just fine, charged about 18% and i took it and plugged it into my car charger to use for a gps. I get to work and text my friend to tell her i would talk to her on lunch, leave and come back 3 hours later on break and it was dead.. I started my car and it came on and went to the home screen and it just shut off before i could do anything. I hit the power button and instantly the orange light was solid, no flashing. I held the power button and it got stuck in a boot loop just staying at the HTC screen. Right now, I cant get it to charge, load into HBOOT or even get it to turn on to the HTC screen. Any clue what i can do to fix my life line?
Almost sounds like your battery took a dump. I know we have a non-removable battery, but it seems like I remember reading about someone else having a similar problem some time ago, and that they were able to have the battery replaced, which fixed their issue. Try leaving it on a charger that you know for a fact works for 8 hours or so and see if it will take a charge. Otherwise, you might want to take it to Sprint and let them look at it.

I've seen this issue before and found this useful article when reading about this, I don't remember who got the issue but they said to follow this guide on how to calibrate your battery, hope it helps: http://www.pocketables.com/2010/08/...ry-and-possibly-double-your-battery-life.html
Good Luck!
not bricked
The term, "bricking" suggests that the damage, often a misconfiguration of essential on-board software, is so serious as to have rendered the device PERMANENTLY unusable.
Try holding volume up, down and power at the same time to try to boot it while it's on the charger

This exact thing happened to me about a month ago. Whats happening is your battery is basically dead/at 0% or 1%. When you try and charge it the phone gets hot so it's not gonna charge.
What i did was literally put the phone on ice. You gotta get a bowl big enough to put a bunch of ice in, then put some kind of layer over that. Like a bag or foil. Something to keep your phone from getting wet. Now sit your phone on top of the ice and plug it into the charger. The phone is gonna slow charge and it'll take a couple hours to charge 4 or 5%. Wait 3 hours while keeping it on ice/charging it. Then take it off the charger and it should turn on. Now put it back on the charger and it'll charge normally. Idk how much of this made sense to you, but this worked for me after trying many other things.
Thank you so much. you have helped revive a dead phone. I followed your instructions to the letter and after three and a half hours found the phone to have charged to 60%.
The ice really worked. The heat wasn't allowing it to charge.

I'm glad yours worked out but my case is a little different. One night I was playing games for hours and hours and while I had the charger connected so it wont die on me and when I started to notice that it's getting pretty hot, I put it down and its still charging and let it charge overnight. When I woke up the phone won't turn on anymore. When I hold the power for a long time it would start blinking but the screen won't turn on or anything and when I let go of the power button it will stop blinking, power + volume up or down combinations has not effect or whatsoever.
So I decided to connect it to my laptop thinking that maybe it got brick and I'll restore with LGNPST but it won't even recognize the phone, no matter what button combinations I make. So I was thinking maybe the battery was bad so I bought a new battery, removed the screws &cover but when I installed the new battery the damn thing still won't turn on. So now I'm thinking maybe it's the charging port, I have replaced the charging/mic module as well and went through all the trouble of disassembling the phone BUT IT STILL WON'T TURN ON!
I don't know if this method will work but it won't hurt I guess but considering I have replaced the battery already and the phone had already cooled-down since it's been days that I can't turn it on. ANYONE OUT THERE CAN SHED SOME LIGHT PLEASE!

well for trying almost everything even to the point of replacing parts I guess it's time for me to say goodbye to my beloved LG Optimus G. I could probably help with your problem too if it's not too late. This same thing happened to my mom's phone(She has the LG Optimus G as well) My first guess was to replace her motherboard. I ordered her another optimus g from EBay that had a cracked screen and cracked back for $40(make sure it's an unlocked phone). The internal hardware was all in working order. I simply replaced the motherboard in hers with the one from Ebay, and it worked. If you haven't gotten rid of the phone yet you could try this. I found a teardown guide on youtube that made it really easy to remember where to disconnect and reconnect everything to the motherboard. The only downside to this is it's basically a new phone and anything not stored on your sd card will be gone. It's like a factory reset.
hey mate, wow I didnt think anyone would reply to my post anymore.. thanks for replying, anyway no I havent gotten rid of it yet though I already got a Galaxy S5 if I can fix it soon I can still return the S5 coz right now I'm not happy with it coz of the locked bootloader.
I was actually thinking of doing that since I've already gone through all troubles of replacing the mic/charging port module so why not just continue experimenting on it. I will follow your advice but do you know anywhere or anyone else I can find just like the one you got?
Your advice is greatly appreciated, thanks
