[Q] No service and changed IMEI number S3 - I9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
It's been a while since I last posted, but still understand protocol before starting a new thread.....I've searched many places for this answer and come up short because there's a mixture of issues, so here goes:
* Phone purchased second hand by bro-in-law, bought it already rooted, but on a BTU ROM. IMEI in About section is different to that which is displayed on the back of the cover. He only knows how to message, browse and call, so he didn't check these details.
* Don't know the previous stock ROM(i.e., T-Mobile, Voda, 3G or BTU). It is currently on a ROM of I9300XXAELLA and baseband of I9300XXBLFB.
How I find out what the orginal firmware was?
* Phone worked fine for more than 4 months without any hiccups, but recently having signal issues(intermittent disconnections), even with different networks(sim cards). So can't be provider issue. Or can it? Tried the Vanir ROM, issue(s) still persists. Seems to me like a software issue as there's been no physical damage, but can't be sure.
* I can access the mobile network signal settings when the signal is functioning, but not when it goes off. Can't make any calls when this happens or send any messages. Toggling between Airplane modes does the trick on the odd occasion but quite often it won't make any difference, it seems to have a mind of its own.
I'm leaning towards a baseband issue or radio/modem, if these aren't the same things. I'd like to revert it back to stock to see if it that works, but I have no idea which firmware to use because I need a way to find out what would work best in this situation.
That's about all I can think of right now...oh and one more thing, there's nothing backed up i.e., EFS folder or IMEI because nothing came with the phone. If you need any more information, feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance
RJ

[Q] No network, Searching(no call/text/data)?

My phone won't find a network. it just says searching where the "T-Mobile" should be.
-I've odin, been to stock, gb, and ics but that doesn't seem to be wrong.
-I tried all different modems but nothing.
-Manually added a VPN, nothing.
-Simcard doesn't seem to be the issue either because I've been using it on an old samsung slider phone perfectly fine contacts and all.
- I searched the forums and found similar cases, but those were all old threads and dead.(I know some are touchy on reviving dead threads.)
So my issue is getting my phone to have service to be able to text and call, everything else is working superb, except for that.
This wasn't bought at t-mobile, no warranty, if it is dead then it is just spare parts.
Any body have any suggestion. I miss my smart phone and just started college so I need this thing running..
Thank you, anyone.

Serious data connection problem

Hi there! With SGS III being my third from the Galaxy family, I did not waste any time and flashed first custom rom the very hour I bought the phone. Everything was really great - I've been through Android Revolution, Omega, Wanam and couple more, but it all seemed too good to be true. Two days ago somethig went wrong with my data connection - I noticed it while I couldn't connect to Facebook. The "H" icon was in place and by the arrows I saw that it was "working" all the time. The problem was (and still is) that no data actually goes through. I tried different radios, kernels and roms - to no avail. I've read something about botched or misplaced IMEI issue, but checked it right after that and it is intact. To be sure I tested my SIM card in other phone and the data connection is working flawlessly. APNs checked. I'm getting quite nervous because I've only got my SGS III for three days and already it's.. Not entirely functional.
If you have any idea what this may be about, I'm happy to provide any information needed to identify my problem. Thanks in advance for saving my S III..
Sad to hear, unfortunately it seems you already tried the common solutions to solve such an issue, the only additional thing coming to my mind is to flash a stock Rom with odin, if it doesn't work do the same with a pit file or change your csc, because the last two options reset your whole user data to stock and your internal sd as well (don't forget to backup your data) it should solve it.
Maybe there is somewhere a leftover which causes your problem, good luck

Flash a stock rom with Odin and perform a full wipe *2767*3855# in the phone dialpad. Save important files to the pc first. This should fix it all. You can reroot after that and make a cwm backup of your stock rom.
-Edit- double post, Follow the above
Thank you both for your suggestions, but it seems that I'm stuck with I-do-not-know-what.. :/ Flashed stock rom and new radio via ODIN, but the problem with really slow HSDPA connection is still present. I am worried it might have something do do with IMEI after all - it seems that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29461950&postcount=3 they are explaining similar issue, but I haven't lost my IMEI (not to mention backuping nor restoring anything). What is more, I do not only have EDGE icon, but HSDPA as well, but the connection is slower than GPRS. Damn it..

Possible modem toast?

So, without writing a big long explanation, I'll cut straight to the chase and tell you what's been done with some light background.
I woke up one morning and my network was inactive. At first, I thought it was maybe some mobile network issue. One day later, still no connection.
-Odin'd back to stock twice
-reflashed multiple roms (including all the usual formats)
-flashed 5 difference ICS modems (KA5,6,7 and KB1,5)
IMEI error popped up after a new rom flash for those that are curious, but I lost my original a while ago and just adopted a generic. Never had an issue with it affecting my mobile network. I remember having a modem issue before when ICS was in it's discovery phase and flashing roms, but nothing where the modem just stopped while it was running/on.
I just wanted to see if I forgot something before I officially sentence my phone to death. I wanna say maybe a freak surge nuked it or something. That's about all I can think of since I know my way around android. Any ideas appreciated. maybe there's a way to check my hardware I forgot about.
Thanks!

[Q] Radio - Signal Problems after Custom Rom

Hello,
I'm looking for some help with my son's sgh-i757m phone. I'll try layout my history on the phone and question in some hopefully easy layout.
What I did
at my son's request, I changed the stock rom on my son's sgh-i757m (Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE) for him. He wanted to be able to install apps and customize his phone as he wished. i installed the paranoid android rom for him successfully.
Problem
Once installed he began losing cell phone network connection. This progressively got worse and now it barely works.
My troubleshooting
I tried installing other custom rom's to see if this would resolve the problem. Nothing seems to work. The present rom I have which is Dadoes. This one seems to work the best BUT i only get signal within 1 block of the cell phone tower. (oh ya... i live in a small town where we only have two cell towers in the valley here.)
I tried researching terminal commands to boost the radio signal but I haven't found anything for the sgh-i757m.
I've also done the *#*#4636#*#* trick... nothing... i've installed network boosters but those don't do anything.
What Haven't I done
I haven't tried to install a different radio rom... (maybe I did, but in my research there isn't an explanation if this is different from the OS rom).
I haven't tested whether it is a hardware issue as I don't know how
What I am asking
Can I get help regarding radio roms; is this different from OS rom's? if it is different... where do I find them and more information on this?
Can I get help on steps to test my hardware to see if this is the issue?
Any pointers if I am missing anything?
Thank you... oh and this is my first post.
I'm out of lurking and posting now.
Respectfully,
KrustyQ-tip

HI buddy , welcome to our section .
Now your problem, did you tried to reflash the stock ROM back after you saw that your phone is having problems to see if the problem is solving?
I did took a search on this forum and I found this thread :

There you'll find a cwm and other useful stuffs for your phone

Fixed - sgh-i757m connection problem
Well... thank you for your reply. I didn't have a backup of my son's original rom but my daughter just broke her phone and it was exactly the same. So, I thought I would back her's up then put it on my son's. What she did was break her screen. So, I thought I could swap screens or parts to make this work. I was able to take my daughters apart and was able to take my son's apart. In taking apart my son's phone, I found that the attenae cable wasn't attached to it's connector. So I plugged that in then tested and voila! It works!! pheew!! Was getting worried that I was losing my mind (maybe I did?).
Thank you for your help. I did do the custom roots and roms. Now my son can choose which one he wants!
Respects,
KrustyQ-tip

ROM Advice

Hello there, I am looking for a ROM but I do have a few requirements and although I did tested quite a few by now I think it's for the best to ask more experienced people.
My requirements are:
Low battery consumption
Speed
Reliability, I do have some problems with my phone lately which I will describe down below
Interface is of no concern, I don't need pretty things
EDIT: I am quite the power user as I did managed to recover it from a hardbrick so any methods are welcome.
With that being said, I need a ROM+Kernel recommandation (I am using CWM 6.0.4.5 as I could not find any TWRP compatible).
Regarding my problems: I don't get messages or calls, it's like it logs me off the network yet I can use 3G at anytime, if I initiate a call it works just fine (SMS too), also starting to test out new and different ROMS a "com.android.phone" error started to pop up after I send a message (Not very often, but it does pop up and it shuts down my network).
For now I am using SlimSaber 4.4.4 and it seems to be pretty good, I like the higher resolution and it moves quite fast (it did not lagged for a day), the battery seems to keep up pretty well too.
I have not installed any aditional kernels to it simply because I managed to brick my phone twice because of it.
The signal problem appears to be from my SIM or the antena, I will get it checked out sometimes soon.
deleted. didn't read second post before posting
What did you do to brick your device with a custom kernel?

I don't really know, I just flashed Dorian into the wrong ROM version I suppose, it would just turn on and not boot up into CM (I am not sure what ROM I was testing at that point).
Then I tried to flash some other kernel but the recovery didn't worked (It wouldn't open up) so I flashed it with Odin which solved the problem.
I got a question though: If I have like over 10000 messages to a phone number, could it make problems? From the provider I mean, because it seems that my phone gets f*cked mostly after I talk to my girlfriend.

I believe it isn't an issue with the provider, the provider should be reliable to send as many messages as you want (unless this isn't the case with some carriers overseas ) . Having that many messages on a phone will definitely cause slowdowns. Problems could be caused by the ROM you are using, carrier network etc, so it is hard to tell.

I've deleted them anyways, it's not because they are on the phone... I got myself a new SIM and it worked fine for about 3 hours then it started again with the same problems yet reverse, now I can't send messages but I do receive.
I will just call Vodafone to help me out, I doubt it's the ROM because it manifests the same through each and everyone I installed, also it's not the phones fault either because with another SIM it worked just fine .
There must be some bug into their server.
