This is a great little handset but limited by no dial function it is pretty well limited!
I mean answering calls is great but to make a call you have to get the ultra out and dial and then swap to the handset.
Is there any way to voice dial or are we hoping for an update from Sony?

I discover yesterday that you can dial. You can access to calls register and press the button to call directly. use buttons .

Currently there is no way to access your address book. Probably wont be either as imagine the time it would take to scroll through your contacts. I have over 500, so thats just not an option.
To access a dialer, and move between numbers is probably the only real choice, but that would still take a long time.
I can't see any of these being implemented by Sony.
My 2 cents
I bought mine yesterday, and yes , the fact that you can only access he call log but not contacts is annoying. But can't someone write a small app for it to bring up the contacts just like my car does? i mean i can enter contacts and then i have to select the first letter. this could be fairly ok-ish, right?
Is there a way to use it to wake google now and get google now to dial the number we want?
Fwiw I sold the phone and bought a note 3
Lovely bit of kit but too compromised as a phone for me

This dialer is really aweful considering there is no smart dial..
plus you cant tap the contact and have their numbers popup so you can choose which you want to call.
these are basics of wm and i dont have these features. I love the phone and it's features, but smart dial is extremely important to me and im sure to others as well.
is there something i can do to replace the dialer?
help if you can
Thank you
There is Smart Dial on my Sprint Touch Pro. The thing that bothers me is everytime you touch a name under the dialer it automatically starts calling them. I would like it to go to the contact so you can pick which number to call.

You have to click on the input bar at the very top of the screen before you touch a name. This will search instead of dial.

...How do you input extra numbers to be dialed after the phone number, i.e., to dial a pause and your password for instance).
I thought it was "," but that didn't work. And for short numbers like traffic "511" plus the highway, I put in 511,4951 and it converts it to 511-4951.
^^ the letter p is for pause and w is for wait ^^

Too bad you can't make the input bar a little bigger, I find it hard to tap the input box without using the stylus. Most times I can tap everything with my finger but that input box always messes me up.
I use the Sprint Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) feature almost exclusively now to dial numbers from my Contacts. Regardless of what Sprint calls it, it's Microsoft Voice Command and it works quite well. There's no training and you don't have to record voice tags. It just works
It even works well with a Bluetooth headset. Just tap the answer/call button on the headset and tell your phone who to dial. If there's more than one number for the contact, it will ask which one to dial. I rarely take my phone out of the holster to make a call.

Yeah, I dial everyone with it unless there's too much background noise. I LOVE it.
You can also tell it to start programs by saying "Start " then the program name, OR, you can tell it to play media files by saying the same thing. You can even ask it for the date and time and your battery level. I never even really knew how good it was until I used it. Not one review I read talked about it.
i dont think you guys understand what i am saying... i owned the xv6800 for 2 years and the i760 also... smartdial does work on the touch pro but when you hit the number with your finger it calls that number.. with the xv6800 and i760 you tap and hold and all the contact info comes up in a little popup and you tap the number you want to call..
as for the dpad.. the dpad takes alot to get use to..it's too easy to make mistakes using the dpad.
i brought back the original dialer through the reg and it still did not help. htc has completely taken over the os with their proprietary software. not too smart on their end. i have also disabled the touch flo and you get the same ugly white dialer.
Just read!
And the answer you were given in this thread is that when you see the number in your call history, you use your d-Pad to scroll through the numbers in your directory and when you see the one you want you hit enter and your phone will "F"-ing dial it. Can you not read?

In my dialer, it has a Contacts button in the lower left corner. If you use that, then it works the way you describe: click a contact and then you can pick which number you want to use. Doesn't everyone have this?
I agree with the OP. I would like to have smart dialer access Contacts so that I can quickly pull up someone's full contact info and then decide which number to call. I also try to avoid using the D pad because it isn't 100% accurate (or at least not for me) and I have had trouble dialing the wrong number or person inadvertently.
Trying to use the current Contacts option isn't very finger friendly for me.
Update - I just used Advanced Config to turn off the dialer skin, and now I have what I was looking for. At least with Sprint, the basic dialer has smart dial that allows you to tap a contact and it brings up the persons contact info, rather than just dialing their default number. I'm going to give this a try for a while.
I use Spb's Mobile shell to do as you describe.

Hey guys, so I'm obviously running MIUI on my 3D but everytime I receive a call and I slide down to answer, a voice pops up and asks me to press 1 if I want to receive the call? How can I set this up right, I'm pretty sure it's a setting but I can't find it! Thanks

I installed it and unistalled because it kept sending me emails and all that junk. Could that be the problem even if it's not installed?
When I had that issue it was because I integrated my phone number with google voice. I fixed it by going back through the settings and choosing not to use google voice to make any phone calls.

Removing google voice association with the phone number is one way to resolve the issue.
If you're interested in keeping google voice but dislike the requirement of pressing 1 every time to accept the call, the feature is labeled as Call Screening and is available under the Settings -> Calls section on the web site: http://www.google.com/voice.
If you receive a lot of legit phone calls, this setting would probably get frustrating quickly. If you receive a lot of spam calls, this setting is very handy as you can send it to voicemail and listen if they leave a message.
Hope that helps!
Hey all,
Did some searching for this issue and didn't come up with much. Basically, running a stock Rezound using the latest OTA update. Google Voice works fine for receiving and sending calls. However, I can only call out using Google Voice when I tap the person I want to call in my contact list. Is there some way for Google Voice to work with unknown numbers (i.e. just dialing a number the old school way)? It always uses my VZW number if I do this.
I have my Google Voice calling option set to "use for all calls" so I'm wondering what's going on. I am dialing the full number including an area code.
Thanks.
Thats the way I always use it. I select "use with all calls" and anytime I dial a number from the regular dialer... hell, any time I tap on any phone number in the browser... it just dials using Google Voice the way you'd expect it would.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling - no dice. Dialer still causes VZW number to make the call instead of my GV number.
I'm using HTC Sense 3.5 if that helps any...? I haven't heard of anyone with this problem.
I have mine set to "ask me every time". Even for unsaved numbers, it'll prompt me with a box so I can select dial with / without Google Voice. Try setting it this way, and then attempt to call an unknown, see if it'll prompt you. That way you can narrow down whether it's your phone or the Google Voice app.

Yeah, I just tried doing the "ask me every time" option and dialed my house. Didn't give me any sort of message box asking me if I wanted to use GV or not and simply called using my VZW number.
I just got the phone two days ago and I've noticed some weird black artifacts (!) showing up during typical usage sometimes. Maybe I should just exchange it at this point?
Definitely do so if you are within your 14 days. That way you won't have to claim a warranty exchange for a refurb later on.

Just got a replacement. No more screen issues and my bottom buttons are actually red! (they were pink before)
However...still have this same Google Voice issue. Very frustrating. Maybe it's because I skipped the voicemail setup?

You're obviously doing something wrong with the initial setup... That or you have it Google Voice not configured with your cell phone number correctly...
Works okay for me. On ice cream sandwich.
Google Voice not working when configured for ALL calls
I am running:
GV App build number 0.4.2.54
Galaxy Tab GT-P6200L with Android v4.0.4
When I set GV to ask before every call, it does, and my calls work just fine.
When I set GV to make all calls, it doesn't make calls, at all.
Since I went to the expense of porting my number to GV, it would be nice to use GV for my calls. I want to keep my cell number private, and GV should allow me to do this by showing my GV number to people when I call them.
Although I can do what I want with the extra screen press (when asked if I want to use GV), this is not how the app is supposed to work.
Is there a fix for this that anyone is aware of?
Thank you.
OK, I received the Mate 2 yesterday and am trying a data plan and Google Hangouts w/ dialer. Works well. I paired bluetooth to my car. Now here is the question: Is there any way to get the bluetooth commands to go to Hangouts dialer versus the phone dialer? I was able to speak fine but have to manually dial and hang up. Probably not, but I would like to be pleasantly surprised.

I see the question now. No I don't think you can initiate a call via Bluetooth in hangouts but on mine I can end a call and answer via a button on my steering wheel or also on my plantronics bluetooth headset.

time is money is data. Do you honestly think you had to point that out and that I didn't know the difference?
What I am wondering is why the bluetooth will interface with the regular dialer and not the hangups dialer and if there is a way to point it to the hangups dialer.

I've tried a few things that don't work. Another thing I found out that doesn't work is sending a text from my gwatch. I can respond to texts and hangouts messages from my watch, hangouts is my default texting app, but if I try to send a text, it says it sends but doesn't. Nor does using Google now to send a message. It says no texting app installed. Very confused. Not sure if it's a problem with the phone, the watch, hangouts, Google now. I'll play with it more when I find the time.

If the person on the other end of the call hung up, the call would end.
I've noticed that the proximity sensor doesn't respond in the hangouts dialer like it does in the stock dialer (ie making a call with the phone, finish call, take phone away from ear, screen automatically turns on and shows current call). Hangouts dialer is still pretty new, many minor things can be improved.
Also, the "voice dialer" app that comes stock on the Huawei Ascend Mate2 is only going to work with the stock dialer. I don't know if that is what you are trying to get to work with the hangouts dialer. If you are, it won't work.

The call I made where it didn't hand up was directed to voice mail on their end. Bluetooth "end call" didn't break the connection and it never hung up - It was several minutes later that I noticed it and it showed a connection still.
Yes, I agree that there probably will be improvements made to the hangouts dialer as time goes on. Maybe Googe will do a voice dialer add on. Or maybe a 3rd party voice dialer for hangups will appear.
I also have noticed odd behavior in the hangups app. Sometimes when I dial the person answers and yet it keeps on ringing on my end (called my wife while she was standing next to me).
After a bunch of clicking and rebooting I got auto call forwarding working when Bluetooth disconnects, but it's not what I expected. It's only forwarding calls when unanswered.
I want to walk away from the phone and leave it behind and have calls forwarded immediately, all calls. I thought that was the point of this feature. I don't want them to have to ring for 20 seconds.
Is there some way to make this happen? I noticed it changes the network settings for unanswered, busy, and unreachable to forward, but all call forwarding is never enabled by auto forward.

You could try this
AT&T and T-Mobile both use the same method, which lets you change the number of rings right from your phone. To do it:
Dial *#61# from your phone. Tap Send.
You should see a new screen that displays a bunch of information about what's getting forwarded. You should see a line under "Voice Call Forwarding" that says "Forwards to +11234567890" (where 11234567890 is an eleven digit phone number, likely different from your phone number). Write down this number and tap Dismiss.
Now, dial **61*+11234567890*11*XX# and hit Send, where 11234567890 is the number that you found in step two and XX is the number of seconds you want to wait until voicemail picks up. You can set it in increments of 5, where 30 seconds is the maximum.
After you hang up that call, you can have someone call your phone and see if it worked. On some phones, you can dial *#61# again and see how long it's delaying your calls, but our test phone (the iPhone) did not show this information.
Alternatively, you should be able to call AT&T or T-Mobile customer service and have them change it from their end, if you're uncomfortable doing it yourself.
Another thing that may work for you is to get up a google voice number and just give people that number. Then you they call you, it will ring at both numbers and you wont have to use the call forwarding option.
If only I was not in an area were I cant port my current cell number over to google voice, i would have dont that years ago.

So while messing around with the settings for google voice and the gear s, I have found that if you activate google voicemail on your phone then the call forwarding option will not work when remotely connected to your gear. Calls forwarded TO the gear s work as they should. As soon as I deactivate google voicemail on my phone, and my phone & gear are connected remotely I have no issues with getting my calls from my main cell phone line forwarded to the gear. This is kind of a bummer cause I was hoping that i'd be able to use google voicemail and thier transcription service because tmo charges $3 per month for it. Womp comp. I rarely get voicemails so it's not the end of the world.

I have a call forwarding widget on my Note 3 that I use all the time. It instantly forwards all calls to whatever number you wish. Works great as when I'm in my office at work, I have it forwarded to my land-line, same at home, etc. I do this now on my Gear S too as like you, I don't want to have people wait through long numbers of phones ringing before it reaches me.

They both use the same conditional forward entry for your line. You can only have one. Not both. If you want to forward to Gear S, your own voice mail will never be reached. And vice versa.

I suppose, but honestly, it's not that hard to just get on the play store and look them up. They all function pretty much the same. The one I use is RedirectCall. All one word. Very simple and works great.
I couldn't get it to forward right away either. It's pretty simple to actually just forward the call to the Gear S manually. On T-Mobile devices dial **21*your ten digit number# then when you want to cancel it dial ##21# that's it works like a charm. I use tasker now to do it automatically and have had no hiccups. Although it would be nice if it just worked correctly through gear manager.
