How to check for OTA on root - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Seeing how 4.3 will be officially released soon.
Does anyone know how we can check for manufactures 4.3 OTA running hyperdrive 10 ROM
In settings>about phone option isn't there to check for any ota.

OTAs on custom roms are disabled for obvious reasons... if you want that feature back then you'll have to flash the stock rom. You could try to manually install the SDM 1.0 app which I believe controls the OTA notifications but I'm not sure if that'll work

I Unrooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 and naturally the latest software tried to install. It downloaded but fails to install. How do I fix this?

What build are you on? I hope you're not on MDK and trying to update to ME7!
I want to be on the latest version. Not going to be rooting this phone again plus I don't want the constant notifications.

If you can Odin ME7 over MDK, this should work.

I would install custom recovery. Then flash a ROM with ME7 base. That'll get rid of the notification and put you on the latest build with a bunch of tweaks.

To each his own I guess. The link Diceroll provided will do the trick. It hurts my heart though.
I'd do some one a favor here and trade devices with someone on me7 if your still on MDK.

Cheers to that!
Updating to official ME7 through Verizon is just such a permanent decision. Are you absolutely sure you don't want to flash ROMs, kernels, mods, etc in the future? Why close that door?

I'm trading this phone to my brother in law who has no clue about rooting. I'm using his upgrade to get the Note 3
So yeah. Otherwise I'd not be unrooted and getting the newest update.
Btw I flashed me7 over what I had and it worked liked a charm.

MDK, ME7 or MI1 which are you on

Not the rom your running but the official version release from Samsung and Verizon.
I'd like to get a decent percentage of who's on what so if people would please just vote (can't think of a better word atm) I would appreciate it. Thank you.

MDK. Stock Rooted.
ME7 stock rooted. Kicking myself for waiting so long and missing out on easily obtaining an MDK. Not willing to pull warranty fraud or anything like that either.
This is what I thought was happening. We have a pretty even mix of people on 3 different versions on this phone. The forum here has been dead lately and I think this is the reason. It's unfortunate Samsung gave in to Verizon..... That or the possibility of gaining a government contract was too much for Samsung to turn down. The situation bums me out. I enjoy reading the forums and the lack of activity is disappointing.... However the news of 4.3 seems to have resparked some interest which is encouraging.

Me7 stock but thinking of taking the update. Haven't had time to root. The only reason I have not taken the update is I am hearing issues with the battery life is this as much of a problem or is it just a few?

The real question is do you need this update? Unless you're in a low LTE reception area there's really no reason to even consider it. I see a lot of posts about failed rooting with MI1 vs ME7 too, so if you're still wanting to root taking the update could be a bad idea. I'd just wait to see what 4.3 brings

MDK stock rooted. Im only missing blocking mode and torch toggle. now with 4.3 I need the gear support, otherwise no need to leave. (but man I would really love to use my watch) coming from a completely tweaked X and RAZR MAXX this phone was awesome out of the box. so with so many stable roms from the get go, maybe thats why there is so little traffic with this phone
ME7 Rooted and some bloatware frozen. Not using TW however. I bounce between Apex Pro, and Next Launcher. Still deciding if i want to update to MI1 and then 4.3. I'll probably wait till 4.3 has a root process.
MDK but thinking about taking the latest stock 4.3 update.

You may be stuck on that for a long time or forever. So far everything has been rootable and 4.3 might be but why take that chance? I would wait at least a week to see if any stock 4.3 roms come out for us on MDK. There is not tar available to make a rom from. I've only read of one person keeping root and it was an extensive process.

I love that they got rid of the notification wi fi thing

Anyone get 4.3?

I saw online from a source idk if reliable or not but it said Verizon was gonna try to roll out 4.3 on October 28. Is this true? Did they start or if not when will they?
Thanks

MJ7 is just like ME7 and MI1, it's locked down tight. If you're lucky enough to have MDK then you're definitely better off enjoying your freedom, but if you want the update badly you should trade it for someone who already is stuck on an updated phone so they can enjoy it.
Nope I'll stay mdk . will ROMs come out with the 4.3 mj7 version though? Or not since its locked down

Yeah they will start coming eventually, the files needed have already been floating around I think so just a matter of time

I'm confused about if i can or should take the OTA?

This is the deal. I rooted my note 3 and was not able to receive OTA's like everyone else because my device had a "custom" status. Well I used Wanam xposed and changed my status from custom to Official and now I see there is a 530mb download and it starts downloading it but I cancel it because I don't know if it's safe to take the OTA. I have my phone set up with all the features I wanted like hotspot, missing data, and airplane toggle and don't wanna mess that up or brick my phone.
What do you guys think about my situation? I'm on a stock rooted MJ4 rom tweaked as I said above.

The best thing you can do is put the device back to stock or flash the 4.4 rom from Sprint via odin. In the general forum you can find the rom, instructions and steps to do it safely.

Normal practice is never to take a Ota while being rooted, it's best to Odin as recommended above.

Or install a custom kitkat rom, never ota as root!

Many good answers here, all appropriate.
Your update is not taking because even though Wanam can fake your status to official, your phone's rooted status (assuming you didn't use a Knox safe rooting method) is preventing the update from sticking. Samsung syscope is looking for signed binaries that are official, and thus you're hosed as far as the OTA update is concerned.
But you have many options, the easiest of which start with grabbing one of the tar (freeza) or one-click packages (Rwilco12) from the dev forum, installing from your computer, then adding recovery, rooting, open bootloader if you wish, and then staying put or forging ahead.
There are already a few good roms that are live, and some mods you can flash, if you are so inclined.
Good luck!

I don't know if it will stick or not. I cancel the download before it ever finishes. Before the Wanam it said I couldn't because the status said custom but now it says official it recognized there is an update available.
I am happy with my note as is but that may be because I don't fully understand what 4.4 kit kat has to offer over 4.3?

There is some misc improvements and a few little new things. But if you are happy with the way it is you can long press on the notification in your notification bar and it will bring up "app info" click that then uncheck allow notifications....hit ok then back out and it will hide the notification for you.

Not another "when will we get root" thread........
You will get it, when you get it.
But then, you may never get it.........
Why do people take the OTA then wonder about root.
If it's that important, be patient.......
I agree. What's the rush to update only to be stuck? We live in an instant gratification society anymore. Wait to update. There is nothing of significance in the update that you need it right away.
Verizon is really trying to clamp down on tethering. Foxfire is broke in the update... The most Verizon app requests root privileges to track tethering on unlimited plans. Stay away from updates until those in the know give you the go ahead.

right so why wait? Why not Downgrade to MK2 then flash any system img capable of MK2 install safestrap then re-upgrade the right way? Look under the development section we have a 20+ page spread on how to do it properly. This will give you root and access to a butt load of new 4.4.2 ROMs. It will also give you root you'll just have to deal with this method for time being i doubt it will change anytime soon. It works fine if you havent upgraded yet put on the breaks and do not upgrade your bootloaders. All you really need to upgrade is your AP and CP with hlos. Then switching between 4.4 and 4.3 is cake. Right now I've got 4.4.2 Custom ROM on my stock slot and a 4.3 gDux 1.1 on 1st slot and an AOSP ROM on my 2nd slot. Ive got a variety literally goes 4.4.2 to 4.3 to 4.2.2 AOSP and I couldnt be happier in terms of what I can throw on an use with my phone.
Actually Firefox just updated and now works on 4.4.2
