[Q] Updating to 4.3 Question - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Hi all,
I want to update my wife's HTC One to 4.3 (she's on 4.1 now). I rooted her phone when she first got it to remove the crapware but other than that it's stock (no custom ROM, no S-OFF). What's the best way to go about this? I'd prefer not to S-OFF if possible, but obviously would like the newer firmware. Would flashing the RUU work? Or would that just land me in deeper problems?
Thanks!

OK so I'd just run the RUU, and then reroot?

thats correct if the phone is not s-off you will have to relock the bootloader first in fastboot with this command fastboot oem lock then run the ruu after it is done reunlock the bootloader with your unlock tocken fastboot a custom recovery and reroot

Great thank you! That may be more steps, but my wife really doesn't need S-OFF just no crapware so that's probably the best option.

actually you can hide most off the crapware under settings then apps go to the all tab and pick the app you want and disable it

[Q]Relocking the bootloader

I remember my N1 which was my phone before the amaze. Once you unlocked the bootloader there was not way of relocking it back then, and basically you voided warranty...is there a way to relock to the bootloader or any other way of getting the phone completely back to its original state without HTC finding out? sorry this is kind of a semi noob question...I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything
No Sir, once its locked its life without the possibility of parole.
well I am not sure that that is entirely true with this device.
based on the information here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1335703
when you go to restore device looks like relocks the bootloader on phone.
HTC will still know you requested the unlock but this seems to undo the changes.

You can relock, bu it will indicate "relocked" instead of the stock indication of "locked".
Moving to General because locking the bootloader and relocking the bootloader isn't actually development related.
I had the Evo 3D and I was able to lock t but it would say relock. I don't know about this phone but I doubt there is a way to get the stock Lock.
ok i thought was "locked" based on what i read there
Once "relocked" and flashed to stock will it get ota?

You can have the stock recovery and get root. You can install roms without changing the stock recovery but you will need the pc to install roms. You can also flash the stock recovery anytime if you changed it.
Since I can get tethering without root I am not interested in giving my info to htc.

But there's a thread on how to disable them with temp root I have no reason to root I get wifi and USB tethering with tmobile and wifi calling with the stock from. I use lancher pro paid and widget lockerp aid and I'm very happy.I get what I want from sense like the dialer and all the social integration without the HTC launcher which I don't like. I pack many icons in one screen with lancherpro which is my goal
How do you get wifi calling?

Of course but you still need an unlocked bootloader to make any root changes permanent which means giving your information to htc (unless you obtain S-OFF which currently isn't possible unless your device was shipped with it.)

Try pushing the settings.apk (and .odex if applicable) from an earlier version rom such as .5 and reboot.
That should do it.
I haven't not tried or tested this though.

Upgrading to ICS

Hi,
I have a HTC EVO3D running android 2.3.4 and unlocked by htcdev method (s-off). I've installed super user, but not changed the ROM.
Here is my question: Do i need to relock the boot loader to perform the upgrading to ICS (through phone software upgrade) ?
After upgrading, can i use that htcdev method again to unlock and root? I dont need to change the ROM, I just want to have super user!
Is there any way to downgrade to 2.3.4 after that?
Software number: 1.24.415.6

If you want to take the stock update, then yes, you will have to relock the bootloader. The easier way would be to wait (not very long) and someone on here will put out a stock rooted rom of the update, you can just flash that like any other rom.

You are unlocked with s-off running GB. you want relock and upgrade to ICS and then unlock again to go back to GB right?
Just so you can have superuser installed on your phone?

[Q] How do I return my phone to stock rooted so I can sell it?

I have been away from the EVO 3D scene for a quite a while. I dug my phone out of a shoe box and decided I want to sell it. It's currently running some AOKP ROM and I'd like to return it to the latest stock rooted ROM. It has HBOOT 1.40.1100 with S-OFF (picture of bootloader attached). What is the proper way to flash a stock rooted ROM without losing S-OFF?
Thanks!

You can't lose s-off by flashing. If you flash RUU your bootloader will be locked, but s-off will remain. And since you have s-off your bootloader can be locked and you can still have custom recovery and flash everything you like
Thanks. Is there any reason to unlock the bootloader?

[Q] How to achieve S-OFF?

Is there a way to achieve S-OFF as of this year? I have been browsing the xda ATT HTC One m8 forums for awhile and I came across firewater and sunshine. Firewater has been discontinued and with sunshine I keep getting an error message saying "Sunshine can not be used with your device as it is. You need to flash a stock ROM, or a nearer stock ROM." I'm on a stock Sense ROM(with some mods of course) but it's stock enough right? I want to get S-OFF because I eventually want to change my phone into the Google Play Edition device. Any help or direction/s to a thread with info or your own instructions will be greatly appreciated.

Since you are going to change out to GPE, you may as well bite the bullet and send your phone back to stock, then run Sunshine.
I did and am now running Developer Edition happily.

Specifically...You need the kernel to be 100% stock. Grab the boot.img from the firmware zip that matches your phone and flash it via fastboot. Sunshine will then work.
Where can I find the boot.img? And what does the boot.img do?(what is it)
Has anyone heard of Moonshine? I've seen that and they claim s-off and it's free. I really don't want to pay $25 to s-off my device. Thanks in advance!

What is you hboot number?
I just converted my AT&T M8 into GPE device. I searched enough for a week before realizing that there is no way to S-OFF without sunshine. I eventually paid the $25 and am happily running an S-OFF device now. Moonshine didn't work and firewater is discontinued.

The OP has clearly stated that they are trying to use sunshine, but its not working for them.
Stock ROM and stock kernel are best for sunshine (and not having these may be interfering). Or being on hboot 3.19 renders sunshine unable to s-off (and you can't downgrade hboot with s-on by definition); which is why I asked OP what hboot is currently on the device.
I have a similar problem - here's the twist:
Hboot *IS* 3.19. Sunshine didn't work, and the message was simply: phone incompatible, it's a known issue, we're working on it.
AND... I don't KNOW my firmware version, because I used a version of twrp when rooting the phone that had a bug with just that effect - you can't see your firmware version.
I wanted S-off specifically so as to flash the latest ATT firmware to alleviate that problem.
The ultimate goal is to get viper on the phone.
What can I do? Thanks to all in advance!

Hboot 3.19 and s-on (on an AT&T M8) means you are on 3.28 firmware (Android 4.4.4).
So sunshine won't work, and you won't be able to update the firmware to run any Sense Lollipop ROMs until either sunshine is updated to support your hboot (new exploit needs to be found, basically) or AT&T releases the LP update (after which you can update the firmware by "official" means).
I responded to your other thread, so you can read a more detailed explanation of "firmware number" there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59480010&postcount=19

How to root (with links) is explained on my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Also, much of the "HTC specific" lingo is explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52484527
I would suggest reading up (and making sure you understand all the terms and processes) for at least a couple hours before trying anything on the phone. I do this every time I buy a new device, even having own quite a few HTC phones. In fact, I usually start reading and researching before I have the phone in hand.

If your talking about ROM, then take a full backup of your ROM before flashing custom ROM using titanium/nandroid etc.
Or if your talking about root,
Just unroot using unroot apps from play store or the respected app you get after rooting.

As the above reply stated, it depends on what you are talking about.
If you just want the stock ROM, recovery, etc. one option is to relock the bootloader and just run the RUU. It will return you to stock software. The only thing not "stock" will be the bootloader will say RELOCKED instead of LOCKED. You need s-off to make it say LOCKED again (after unlocking it).
?

You can return to stock with a RELOCKED bootloader with s-on.
You do need s-off if you want to make the bootloader say LOCKED as it was from the factory. But the only reason to ever do this is for warranty purposes. And if you bought the phone from AT&T, you should note that your warranty is through AT&T, not HTC. And AT&T doesn't give a crap if the bootloader is unlocked, or whatever (folks have even successfully sent in phones for warranty with custom ROMs on them).
If you are seeing warranty service through HTC (you didn't purchase from AT&T) that is another story. But that is the only reason I'd bother going back to LOCKED.
In normal usage, I recommend leaving the bootloader UNLOCKED as it give you more flexibility to flash ROMs whenever you want, etc. The only reason IMO to relock the bootloader in normal usage is to run the RUU.
S-off is nice have if you want to flash radios, modified hboots, and some other things (you also don't need to relock to RUU with s-off). It certainly doesn't hurt, and some folks like to make the phone as customizable as possible right away. In fact, I did s-off to the phone the second day I had it (although s-off was free back then). But for you, its not strictly "needed" at this time unless you want to do the things mentioned.
so heres the thing again sorry for the manny questions i am just making sure if i do this everything will work so heres the thing the rom i linked if i were to flash it will my at&t sevice work since it would be a different baseband

The baseband isn't determined by the ROM, its determined by flashing a different baseband/radio (which requires s-off).
There are some folks that have had issues on AT&T's LTE network using some custom ROMs. Namely, not receiving or sending voice calls while on LTE. But this seems somewhat random, and not the ROMs fault per se; but probably changes that AT&T is making to their network. The most you can do is flash the Skydragon ROM, and if you have problems, try another ROM or revert to stock.
Make a backup of your stock ROM with TWRP before you flash anything, to be sure you have something to revert to if you have problems. This is good general advice before you flash any custom ROMs, root mods, etc.
I'm using the ROM your linked (Skydragon Sense 7) on AT&T, and it works fine for me.
