Phone only charges while turned off - AT&T HTC One (M7)

My HTC One will only charge when the phone is off, not sure at all why this is. It was unlocked and has the stock rom on it, but it fails to recognize the device completely, when it is turned on and plugged into the wall or a usb port on my computer.
The phone however, will be recognized via fastboot and will charge either through AC or USB. I successfully was able to fastboot and push cm 10.2 on it. Still remains the same problem as before.
I cleaned the port out of the bottom to free it of dust and debris but no luck.
The phone itself will have a solid red charging light for 6 seconds, then it turns into a dim red light for 8 seconds, the led then turns off for 5 seconds and then the cycle repeats. The phone can only charge to 99% and never will show a green light for it fully charged, even after 2 days on the charge.
What the heck is the problem? I have read too many issues in regards to this and HTC has no acknowledged this one bit.
Do I have to replace the USB charging port? I ask that since my bootloader is unlocked.

Seems that on a clean restart and on airplane mode, the phone can't even hold a day charge from 25%..

My device started doing the same out of the blue. All was working fine untill about an hour ago. Now my device will not charge while the device is on. And no usb cable is being detected.

SOLUTION>>>?????

I ended up selling it and going back with my LG OG pro. Warranty it, you will not find a solution as I wasted hours upon end looking for one.

Same problem here
I'm having the same problem since two days ago. Anybody can help?
Thanks.

Eh?! Photon won't turn on anymore. White LED when plugged in?

My photon was on 5% about an hour ago... then it turned itself off. I plugged it in to the charger and a "white/faint yellow" LED comes on. Normally the photon doesn't have a charge LED so this certainly struck me as odd.
It has been sitting for almost an hour and still won't turn on.
I took the battery out and reconnected the charger and the white/faint yellow LED comes back on, even with the battery pulled out.
What is happening here? Has anyone seen this?
I've see green/orange/red LED flashes for diff things but never white.
Well I found this thread: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-photon/107931-led-not-working.html#post1147045
Looks like white means very low battery and charging. Now the white light has gone off while plugged in... But it still will not turn on
Turns out, I was plugging it into a PC usb that didn't have the drivers installed. The phone won't charge if the moto drivers are not installed, regardless of the light
I plugged it into a wall charger and viola... its back and running.
False alarm!
Lol, exact same thing happened to me! I totally freaked out, but plugged it in a wall and started working.
same thing happened to me yesterday. I plugged into the wall, NOTHING. I started freaking out, until I pulled the battery and re installed it. LED charge light then came on and all was good. Weird.
Can someone help me i have a photon also but when i plug it up it says failed to boot 2 starting rsd mode battery too low to flash and it wont boot up when plugged up to a computer. also when i plug it into the wall it just boot to the m sign

- Pull battery
- Put it back in so it's off
- Keep it plugged into the wall to charge it
- Once charged, power into RSD mode (power+vol up)
- Plug into computer and start RSD and flash 154_5 SBF to get back to stock
- then flash 198_7 SBF for good measure.
- Reboot
When i try that nothing works, it just stays on the white led light
I just bought mine from best buy and it did the same thing..they exchanged the phone since it was defective..

Photon won't turn on anymore. White LED when plugged in
i have a refurbished replacement photon from best buy geek squad that i got last month. within a few days it was acting strange and randomly/often turning itself off. the battery was fully charged yet the unit would often times power down. this happened a lot the first few weeks. then last week the issue seemed to stop and it stayed on 24/7 as i charged it frequently. all was well until yesterday.
i dropped my phone from about 2 feet. the phone turned off and only the "m" boot up screen appeared after i powered on, then it went black. i had a fully charged battery in the unit when this happened. i plugged the charging cable into the phone and it kept booting up to this static "m" screen then turning off. the LED notification light went red and after numerous times powering on and off and resetting the battery (and sim card) i finally got a "5%" battery screen. a few seconds later it showed 100% battery then kept rebooting to the static "m" screen and shutting off again. then i started getting a "?" screen for the battery a few times and back to the 5% and it changed to 80%/100% very quickly and back to the blank screen. i left it plugged in overnight.
now the LED notification light turned white and the phone cannot be powered on. i tried another battery without any success so that shouldn't be the issue.
any ideas what to try next?

Try to fully charge your battery using portable battery charger.
When battery full charge, try to entering recovery mode. From off condition, press both power and volume down, press down until you find android recovery and press volume up button. After you see exclamation logos, press both volume up and down. Then select wipe data. Hope fully you can still entering recovery mode.
If you cannot enter recovery mode, try to enter RSD protocol.
step is, connect your photon to PC using cable data, press both volume up and power, wait until it show RSD Protocol, than flash it again.
How to flash using RSDLite is in development section, you can read there.
Hopefully its can work

I just had a mini-anxiety attack until I found your post. Thank you!

[SOLVED] Stock HTC One X+ turning on, but not charging since full drain.

I read loads of similar issues, but mine is a little different:
I heavily used my stock-rom, unrooted phone today, recorded long videos in Full HD, when I got back home, I had 18% battery, plugged it into my computer's USB to get the videos (unaware of the issue of insufficient current on USB ports) and windows did not recognize it.
I then unplugged it planning to plug it into the wall socket, and when I woke the phone, it died on my arms
A little annoyed, I plugged it into the wall socket, and got the slow, orange blinking LED, and was not able to turn the phone on. After 30 minutes, the LED stabilized and it seemed to be charging (while off), so I left it there for another 20 minutes.
When I tried to turn the phone on, it worked, normally, but showed 2% battery life remaining. I had Wi-Fi on, but normally it wouldn't be an issue, so I left it charging for another 20 minutes.
I then woke the device and it showed 1% battery left! While plugged in! I tried to wake it and it died again.
I left it there for an hour or so, turned it back on, 6% battery left, I then turned Airplane Mode on so it would charge faster. After 10 minutes in Airplane Mode, it still shows 6%. It is not charging, I'm using the original HTC charger and cable.
It seems like it is not charging at all when on, and charging VERY slowly when off.
Tried a few tricks I read online, such as holding the volume up + volume down + power button for 2 minutes, but all I got was a steady flashing recovery screen, which says my battery is too low for flashing.
So the difference between mine and other posts is that my stock phone is turning on, but not charging anymore. If I turn Airplane Mode off, it drains itself even while plugged into the charger.
I'm really looking for a solution for this, instead of simply returning it (it's more than one year old, and I bought it overseas) or buying a new phone.
EDIT: Battery Widget app showed Charging Speed: n/a. Testing says battery health: good, 3666 mv, "charging" status
EDIT II: Tried running it in Recovery Mode, got a 3d exclamation point with a phone icon. Rebooted it normally, it turns back on, still not charging. This does not look good at all.
EDIT III: Read about Mr Hofs idea, of running custom recovery via the PC, but I can't get it to connect. Have newest version of Sync Manager yet windows says the "device malfunctioned" and could not be recognized.
EDIT IV: Done factory reset, no luck. Phone is still draining while plugged in. After 8 hours of charging while off, all I got was 40/50% I'm really desperate as the phone is virtually bricked and I need it for work. Willing to tip/donate to whoever finds solution, if that is ok according to forum rules (not sure)

Back to the blinking led
I tried plugging the phone into the computer's USB port, got the red blinking led again. Held the volume down + power button while connected to the PC and it seemed to be constantly rebooting - windows popped up "device not recognized" several times and the power led started flashing much slowlier. Sometimes the lower leds would also flash. I held it like that for 2 minutes.
After a while the lower lads and the screen backlight lit up. I then realeased the buttons and quickly plugged it into the wall socket.
Now I have the fast blinking again. Awesome. I can't tell if I'm doing it right or brutally murdering my phone
You might just factory reset once your charged as .much as you can. I believe your problem. Is having to do with using or somehow got a bad current or USB port/cord etc. Anyway its software related and a hard reset doesn't help I'd RMA ..you go flashing mods to do yourself probably won't work especially if its hardware. Hope this helps. I say this as it happened to me. I used a lower amp wire charger socket. Same thing happened. After many hours of trying stuff. Factory reset never used bad or non OEM again. But in your case it may be just some IDD quirk. It happens bro. Hope you get it up and running. ..

Left it charging while off overnight, now I have 40% (!) battery. Any time I try flashing the default recovery, it'll show a red exclamation. The PC won't recognize it at all, even with downloaded drivers. And doind all that seem to have drained it to 30%.
Will try to get my important files and then factory reset it.

Charge to 100%
Try a different charger
Try flashing a different ROM/kernel
Try flashing RUU
Contact HTC
That's what I would do and the order I would do it in. Leave it alone until it is charged up to 100% before you do any of this though. Even if it takes a week. For all I know, charging to 100% will reset the charging circuit. I doubt it, but who knows.... Stranger things have happened.

Well this is awkward.
After many days, and since HTC is not present in Brazil anymore, I have no ways of contacting support, I gave up, bought an S4. After two days with my new phone, guess what? The HOX+ charged 100%, and it seems to be discharging normally. GOD DAMMIT.
So, ridethisbike, your suggestion worked, kudos for you and boo for me for not being patient and giving a shot.
Out to look for a buyer then. :silly:

Won't charge when on, LED blinks when off and on the charger.

Yep, I'm having another round of issues on my One.
Just some information:
Running stock ROM, bootloader locked (not "relocked"), S/N HT346(...), Quick boot OFF, previously sent in for repair.
I believe this has been brought up before, but here I go:
I pulled the phone off the charger this morning with a full charge. However, Car mode unexpectedly opened up. I found this odd, since I'm running a stock AT&T ROM using the Sense launcher, which means Car mode is nowhere to be found. The device also reported using an "incorrect charger" or some other thing. I use the charger that came in the box with my phone. I assumed it was a mistake.
However, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to brush it off and went on with my day.
Usage patterns normal, maybe with a bit more GPS and camera use than usual, but more or less a normal day.
Come back home, plug it in. Phone will not charge. I do not believe it's a hardware issue. Why?
Troubleshooting time:
Plugged into another outlet, will not charge.
Switched wall warts. Will not charge (I have a few from older HTC phones and a few from other Android devices).
Switched USB cables. Will not charge (tried combo-ing with wall warts, same result).
Plugged into PC. Will not charge AND does not recognize USB connection (both ends). Tried with several different cables, no dice.
Rebooted, no dice. Did it again (and several times after that), no cigar.
Safe mode: Nope.
What works?
Connect via fastboot works (so "FASTBOOT USB" works)
It WILL charge when powered off.
Now, as the title states, I noticed the LED blinking when the phone is powered off and plugged in via AC or USB.
The orange LED will light up for ~6 seconds, dim down (to the level of brightness that would be considered "normal" for the phone) for ~6 seconds, then turn off. The process repeats after the LED turns off for about 5 seconds.
Any ideas on why this could have happened (including my own stupidity) and what I can do to solve this problem? I'm going to send it in to HTC if nothing gets it working again (and has it stay that way).

[Q] Att htc one shuts down seconds after start up

I have a stock ATT HTC One that seems to have a ghost in it. I received this unit with a completely dead battery and after charging several days it finally started. The battery only showed about 30% charge but it was enough for me to install and test a sim card. Everything worked fine so I shut it down and forgot about it. Recently I picked it up again and charged it. I have it showing 83% on the battery but it will shut down within a minute of reaching the lock screen after start up. It does this no matter what I am doing with the phone. I tried plugging it in to my computer USB and it immediately shuts down and won't restart until I unplug it. Before this when it was working it would show a discharge status once it was plugged in to USB but my computer would recognize it and the phone recognized my computer. If I turned off the phone while plugged in it would flash the red LED and then it would glow steadily until it was unplugged. A battery check indicated that the battery was taking a charge at this time I would really appreciate any direction or suggestions as to what to try yo fix this
Thanks in advance and I really want to thank everyone who does all the great work here.

Hi, I saw your problem with your HTC One and it's the same problem that I'm having. Can you tell me the cable and charger you used to charge your phone? I've had it plugged in for 12 hours now and all it does is flash the red led. what does the led look like when it's actually charging? I'm suspecting that i'm using the wrong usb cable and charger.
Thanks,
It's supposed to be solid red when charging. Solid green when fully charged

[Q] TP2 wont charge but LED is amber (replaced charger, battery and usb)

Good morning all,
I have this weird problem with my HTC touch pro 2...
A couple of years ago i bought 2 of these phones and i actually never used them until 2 weeks ago. (so brand new)
This, because i decided to flash them with android NAND ROM's which seemd to be working fine up until one point where i got this issue.
Some background info about the phone:
Both of them are HardSPL unlocked, have WinMo removed and instead have Anrdoid 2.3.7. installed. (which is working fine btw)
At first both of the phones seem to run fine and both of them where able to charge.
After a week of using the phones one of the phones stopped charging. (i tested some VOIP app from Aastra)
When the phone was powered on and the charger was plugged in, the Amber LED was lid but the battery was still draining... altho in the Android menu it stated "AC - adapter, Charging".
Because the charger i use is the original HTC charger which is brand new and so is the USB cable my first thought was.. well the battery could be defective since it has been in the box for some years..
At this point i changed the battery from one phone to the other to see if it would charge, but no luck still the same issue.
Then i replaced the AC adapter and USB cable with the ones from the other TP2, since that phone was charging fine...
Also no luck, the TP2 was still showing a Amber LED but did not charge at all.
After this i tried plugging in de USB cable in my PC to see if the PC would charge it, but as i expected, again no luck.
Then is switched off the phone and plugged in the AC adapter, the LED goes to Amber which indicates charging.
But now the weird thing, when i unplug the cable the LED remains amber !
And then the even MORE weird thing.... when i at this point remove the battery, wait 30 seconds and re-insert the battery the LED becomes amber right away !!
And when i trie to turn on the phone it does nothing, there is no respons at all to pressing the power button...
Just that amber LED....
Then i tried removing the SD-card and SIM, left the battery out for over an hour and tried to re insert the battery, but still the amber light goes on The AC-Adapter is not plugged in at this point !
At this point i was not sure anymore what to do, so i disassembled the phone to look if there was some bad / loose soldering on the USB plug.
But sadly enough i could not find any bad or loose soldering points, i also was not able to find any burnt or other bad looking circutes.
Then i reassembled the phone and made one last attempt to re-insert the battery, then the LED did not start to illuminate !
So for a verry short period of time i had good hopes that it was oke now... but then i plugged in the AC-adapter, the LED was amber again..
But the phone again will not turn on, and when i remove the battery and re-insert it it still shows the amber LED without the AC-adapter plugged in...
Right now i am at the point where i am not sure what to do anymore.
I was wondering if any of my fellow XDA visitors have experience with such an issue, or maybe even know a fix for this..
Some ideas to test or how to fix this are verry welcome ! :good:

:good:

I had a tp2 do something similar to this after it was hit with a power surge. Data would work, but no charging. Sadly the best suggestion at this point is to get a battery charger off ebay for like $5 and/or look for a replacement phone on Ebay/Craigslist. If the chip controlling the usb port is damaged it may work partially, and there is no way to repair it.

The chargers i got seem to be fine since i can charge my other TP2 with both of the chargers and cables.
I guess my only option is to leave it be.. cry... and move on with life...
Maybe, someone else has an other idea...

If you have a known good fully charged battery, and you can't make the phone work with it, then you sadly are probably out of luck.
That is a hardware failure, or a software failure requiring something along the lines of a jtag repair.
I was reading the text as though the phone would turn on with a charged battery, but wouldn't recharge the battery. I guess I misunderstood.
