My phone is bone stock, not even rooted. I'm currently running ME7 (and stupidly took the MDK OTA when it came out, without waiting to find out what it did).
I have been using Power Toggles (on MDK and ME7) to turn the built in hotspot on and off (free WiFi tethering, no root required).
Can anybody tell me if PT still works for using the built in hotspot on the new MI1 OTA?
On MDK, it worked without a hitch. On ME7, it works, but it displays a dialog that I need to call some Verizon number to subscribe to tethering. But, I just press the Home key to dismiss the dialog and the hotspot turns on and works anyway.
From what I can tell, I might get better reception and better battery life from the MI1 OTA, so I'd like to upgrade. But, not if it will break my ability to have my hotspot without rooting.
Anybody know?
TIA!
Maybe you could try hooking up the flux capacitor to it and go back in time to before you took the ME7 update... then root and install a custom rooted ROM... LOL...
Oh yeah... and happy birthday!!!

I've been using Hotspot Toggle Widget which I believe functions the same as power toggles. No issues with me after the update

I'm deploying to Afghanistan and will have my phone with me but am wondering if I can use it on wifi only. Basically airplane mode but wifi on. Not that there should be any Verizon signal there but figure it's safer to leave it like this. Are there any options? Often wondered this too for airplane flights where they offer wifi access but you don't want the cell radio on... Thanks in advance.
If you deactivate the phone Wifi will still work. There will be no connectivity to Verizon.
Enable airplane mode. Then turn on wifi.

I accidentally flashed a radio zip file in heimdall. No errors or fcs. It simply wouldn't activate.

grab the stock radio and reflash it. If that doesn't work then your phone not activating might be an unrelated problem. Check the developer forum and flash back to stock.

Every droid i have i've turned into a mini media server when it was time to upgrade to a new droid. And all of them run on wifi only. To get the full benefits, you'll still need a google account. I'd also flash a 3rd party ROM. If you're not even going to be on Verizon, no reason to use their ROM with all the limitations (e.g. no free tethering, though that might not be important to you). I'd use CM7 or MIUI. If you're tied to touchwiz, there's a lot of good options too.
I recently got the Droid Razr Maxx rooted it and installed wifi tether. when i open up wifi tether it works fine but at the drop down bar i get the stock wifi saying something about configuring the wifi. Should i worry about the stock wifi reporting back that im using the tether option or should i just keep using it?
thanks
That's weird. Is wifi turned off? Can you post a screenshot?

The touch to configure hotspot is the stock app for tether, if you're running the rooted version just ignore it and it may go away after a while. Either way you don't want to let VZW know you are tethering even with an unlimited data plan but no hotspot payment.

thats exactly what i get. I rooted my razr and im using the RAZRX V1.0 rom. I thought that the message from the stock hotspot would go away when i changed the rom but the message "tethering or mobile hotspot active" still pops up. I have a rooted htc thunderbolt and that message never popped up when i used the tether. It could be that i have a custom rom on it but im not sure. should i worry about that message popping up or continue using the wifi as is?
thanks
I only started getting just problem after updating to the latest Asia.en rom. also after updating to the latest asia rom, the wifi output seems to be greatly reduced.
Glad others are having this problem. Just got the Maxx and updated to the newest OTA and then rooted. I get that message every time I start a tether app (Open Garden and Wifi Tether).
This is seems like some people get the message, while others done under the same conditions. Maybe it's the root method we used, I used motofail.
I dont think its the root method because i used droid razr root and im getting that message.
I wouldn't worry about the mobile hot spot pop up. Just ignore it.
Pretty green to this. I rooted my razr and it was running like a dream. Quickoverclock advanced, wifi tethering worked great. Got tripped and changed my google password which affects all my syncing. Should have engaged brain and asked before I did the following. Reset to factory specs from settings. It was the only way that it would let me change the google password in the phone prerooted or the only way I knew how to change...and V was no help. I knew the stock version better than any of their reps..
That being said, The phone still allows tethering. The superuser apk is still there but I was going to use the razrutility by mattl but will not work. I have no bootstrap now, lost my overclock...Basically it works like an unrooted phone with wifi tethering enabled. When I use the DroidRzr Utility Bat is responds with designated path unknown. I mean it is OK, the main thing I wanted to do was tether but there were some other things I liked and they are gone. If I can return it to bone stock, I can unroot it again. I got that down... Just don't know how to get past this. Anyone have a suggestion?
Try reinstalling the apps you used to get boots trap and over clock.
Btw you could have removed the google account from account settings and not had to factory reset. Its done now so we'll try to help.
Also, how did you over clock? The kernel is locked at the moment so does not allow this.

Which software build are you running?
Sorry to post a new thread if this is duplicated, can't find the specific topic for not-rooted Razr yet...
I am running stock not-rooted ICS and I did do a factory reset after the update.
ICS has been running nicely on my Razr, but last night I needed tethering and couldn't get it running. It did use to work with GB, and I *am* paying for the tethering service (corporate).
Tried Settings => Tethering & Mobile Hotspot => Mobile Hotspot (tap to turn on). This turns the feature on for a few seconds, it provisions, then places a quick notification, then turns off. I've repeated this numerous times.
Can also duplicate this in Mobile Hotspot Settings. Configure Mobile Hotspot stays greyed out, so can't configure.
Is there something I'm missing?
can't reproduce this,
stock ics non-rooted razr maxx
I've been trying since I flashed .211.... My experience was about the same worked at first then out. I can connect and shows connection with limited connectivity. Can't get data to run correctly works for maybe a second the goes out. I give up sucksssssss. I may go back to gingerbread I need my tether... The guys at foxfi are working on it. Hopefully they figure it out.

On the same boat...
Hi, i have installed an Stock ICS:
673.94.324.XT910.PSHAsiaRetail.en.03 / 4.0.4
My device is rooted, i did a full clean install of ICS and also i am not able to tether when it worked just perfect on GB after doing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1435619&page=2
I tried the same tips on that thread but it makes no difference on ICS, i have tried the native option, WiFi Tether beta version with different device profiles: Generic ICS, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Droid Razr (on this one the error is: "Setting ad-hoc mode.. Failed")
I hope someone can figure out how to make this work as it did on GB.

I don't mean to be cheeky, but given you are totally stock and paying for the service, I'd be burning up the lines to my provider for not providing for a paid for service. In the meantime, FoxFi from the play market should hold you over.
Call 'em up and make 'em fix it!
Cheers,

Actually just discovered the problem last night. I will be calling them when I get home from work today...
That said, I would much rather work here with all you wonderful foks here at XDA than to be in an automated phone message tree for 3 hours.
Well, I called VZ support from my office. They verified all my account stuff and looked over the phone -- all looked good.
Then they had me reboot the phone.
Now it works.
Duhhh.

I saw one report in the 4.3 OTA thread that said PowerToggles doesn't work on 4.3. But, I'd like to get some confirmation on that, if possible.
Anybody know?
TIA!

didn't work for me. there wasn't a default power toggle in the widget section, so I downloaded one from the play store and it didn't work.
personally, pay the $6 and buy FoxFi
Looking in for the same thing.
I am looking in for the same thing. Just updated to 4.3 and since there is no root method our right now we need to wait and see if this powertoggle works on Mobile Hotspot.

According to nyonya, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46923662#post46923662
FoxFi WiFi works on 4.3. The info on it in the Play Store also says it works on Verizon S4s with the 4.3 OTA.
No root required.
Thanks man, but FoxFi requires to have the security certificate and all the crap install so kinda avoiding it.
I have tired both in the past and i found that the internal hot spot thing is way better then any software out there.

The FoxFi description on Play gives a way to get around that certificate thing. Well, you still have to have the cert installed, but it tells you how to get around having to have a lock screen. Just FYI.
I kinda want to upgrade to 4.3, so I think I'm going to go ahead and do it and if FoxFi is the only way to still have WiFi tethering, then I'll use it! If a better option comes along, I'll change. But, I don't want to just stay on 4.2, just so I can use the built-in hotspot.
I can now confirm:
- The PowerToggles hotspot thing does not work on 4.3.
- FoxFi WiFi works just fine, even on my Unlimited Data account. I was getting 30Mbps down/ 10 up in SpeedTest on my phone before I upgraded to 4.3. I still get that. And when I tether my tablet to my phone through FoxFi (post-upgrade), I also get 30/10 on my tablet.
- You do have to set a pattern or PIN screen lock to get FoxFi to work. But, the instructions FoxFi has posted in the app description on Play do work for getting rid of the screen lock, and FoxFi still works afterwards. If I go into my screen lock settings, the choices for swipe, Face, and None are all greyed out, but after using the steps they said, my phone is actually behaving as a swipe to unlock.
