[Q] [CM10.1] [JB 4.2.2] System crashes on load - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
my Galaxy SII runs on rooted CM10.1.3 which worked fine for a while.
Then it started to sometimes shut down all of a sudden. That usually was when I worked with maps (navigating). Then it also started to shut down when I worked with other apps that I suppose consume a little resources (eg. browser).
Whenever I re-boot right after the shutdown, it shuts down already during the CM start animation. With the second try it takes a little longer to shut down again. Usually I just have to wait 10-15 minutes to be able to re-boot finally. Sometimes only, when I connect it to the charger.
Just when it tries to run the scheduled Titanium Backup, after re-boot, it shuts down again, if I miss to stop Titanium in time.
After such a re-boot it usually shows very low (red) battery status. Just after it recovered after a short while, the BattStatus is back to its former value.
That happens no matter, if USB Debugging is enabled or disabled.
Even my former last resort (flight mode on - battery out+back in - flight mode off) doesn't help.
Today I wanted to backup to my PC before updating CM (hoping to solve the issues) just to find, that I couldn't connect to the PC anymore.
My App USB mode switch for SGS1 on CM shows an error message that I have to turn on USB Debugging to make it work. But USB Debugging was activated.
The processor is running at around 70% (1000 MHz) and+ 29% (800 MHz) when it got into this trouble.
I checked with Zooner Antivirus and it says, I'm clean.
Does anyone have an idea,
why my system shuts down
why it takes so long to recover
why I can't connect to the PC anymore
why USB Debugging is not recognized anymore
Those are many questions, but I'm sure, the answers point to the same root cause.
Thanks!

I could stop the massive CPU usage with Rescan Media Root. Now CPU is down to 60% (of which 97% (1200 MHz) and 1% (800 MHz)). Still, it looks odd to me that the CPU mainly runs on 1200 MHz though there isn't anything big running. Just the usual background processes.
It goes to deep sleep all right when I leave it alone. USB Debugging is turned off now.
Now my main concern is the sudden shut down of the system out of nowhere with the problem to re-start.
Has anyone found a solution for a similar problem?

Partly solved, but crashes still occur

I got this part of my problems solved. Somehow no USB connection mode was selected anymore and I just didn't find the path to get to enabling it (Alzheimer??).
Now I found it: Settings > Storage > left button: USB-Connection (PC)
Meanwhile I updated to CM 10.2-20131026-Nightly. Unfortunately I experienced another sudden crash lately after registering a call on Control your calls 2.9 and another while surfing via 3G.
So, these qustions remain:

I would still appreciate ideas regarding those crashes. It's so strange that I can not properly reboot right after the crash, but later on.

Unable to scan for networks (wifi problem)

Every time I turn wi-fi on, it simply says "Unable to scan for networks". Does anyone know how to fix this. I hard reset and that didnt help.
Try a full power outage. Pull the battery. Sometimes you need to clear voltage from hardware (especially radios) in order to clear the glitch.
If you find it necessary to do this a lot, there is a deeper problem.
If this fails, take it into the store.
I took it to the store and they said its a known bug.
They said they are fixing it in an update soon.
I don't know if its true...

I had the same problem, it started when my phone dropped below the threshold for the power saving mode, I believe I went into those settings and disabled some things and got it working after a reboot (turn fast boot off)

I tried all that and its still doing it...
I'm just going to wait until the bootloader is unlocked and then flash Cyanogen mod 7 when he makes it for the Evo 3D
I'm having a similar issue, my wifi goes into sleep mode and says "unable to connect to wi-fi" when i wake the phone up, but then immediately connects back to wifi. I tried changing the wi-fi sleep setting in spare parts, but nothing fixed it.

Do you have wifi set to "never sleep" in wifi settings??? Also if your running spare parts+ it also has an option to set wifi to never sleep. Also are you running any apps that puts the phone to sleep??? Also in display settings try changing your screen off time to 10 min.

I tried the "never sleep" setting in spare parts, but the setting doesn't hold when I exit the program and open it again, it goes back to "android default". I don't see anywhere in the phone wi-fi settings to change the sleep options.
I'm unaware of any apps I'm running that put the phone to sleep, and I'm not sure what the display settings accomplish but I can try it.
None of this happened before, only thing that really has changed for me is that I got the iGrip car dock and the phone has seen dock mode a little bit. That and I went to a house with spotty wi-fi and my phone would connect and disconnect at the range of the router. I've had other issues with app/camera freezing, I'm hoping it's sd card related or perhaps due to ota's not taking correctly. I'm gonna try a sd card format/phone data reset to see if that remedies all the issues, otherwise I might go in for an exchange.

BS. You shouldn't have to wait for a custom rom for your phone to be running normal. Take that **** back again.

This happens to me. I have noticed it only happens if I have had my phone get below 30% battery at some point and the power save mode kicks in. For some reason it is not switching it back once power save mode is disabled.

The setting isn't located under Wi-fi, look under Power, you should see the options in there. Turn power saver off, or adjust it's settings, and see if that helps, I wouldn't use spare parts
I did a full phone/sd card reset, and the problem STILL exists for me. Spare parts did restore itself as one of the applications that got restored, I uninstalled it without running it though. My phone settings seem to have gotten reset as well. I don't get it, my phone was fine even with spare parts installed before.
I might try another reset and see if spare parts still restores itself.

Are you.running spare parts plus??? Also the settings for the wifi never sleep is located in settings/wireless networks/wifi settings. Then hit menu and select advanced then choose wifi sleep policy. Also make sure best performance is selected.

Ah, I didn't see that menu, thanks!

[Q] Charging only when turned off, 4.1.1.

Hi, everyone. I've seen the other threads and no one had a problem quite like mine.
Yesterday I've upgraded my Alcatel OT-997, ICS 4.0.4. with Kuano's TWRP and now it's:
Alcatel OT-997D, JB 4.1.1. - (details in this thread, 5th post) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981692&page=89
D means I can now use two SIM cards, which is cool.
The problem is the damn thing doesn't charge when it's turned on. It shows the lightning bolt over the battery icon, but in settings shows that charger is not connected. However, when it's turned off it charges, normally. I tried different settings in USB menu: Mass storage, MTP, Camera mode and Charge. Tried with and without Debugging mode. All of those work when connected to a computer in the sense that I can use internal storage, access both SD cards, and so on. But it doesn't charge.
I have tried 3 different cables, 3 wall outlets, and 2 PCs so it's not that. I suppose it's not a hardware problem otherwise it wouldn't charge properly when it's turned off.
So now I use schedule to turn it off before I go to sleep, and to turn on before I wake up, so it would charge while I'm sleeping. Anyone's got any ideas how to fix it?
Bump
Well I solved it with reinstall
Finally I've lost my patience so I tried the only thing that was left.
First I did a backup with TWRP.
Then, factory reset from TWRP.
Then, restore system from One Touch Upgrade 2.8.0 - lost the DUAL capability, software restored to 4.0.4.
Now comes the interesting part. It had the same problem as before, did not charge while on. So I tried a solution I found online a while ago but I never tried when on 4.1.1: Turn it off, connect charger, remove battery, wait a bit, press power button for approx 10 sec (nothing hapens), wait a bit, instert battery, turn it on and there it is. I'm not sure if it was this procedure that did the trick or it simply needed a reboot after update but it worked. It showed "charging" in battery stats.
Finally, restore with TWRP as Kuano explained in his post. Mind you, when I did the restore it was connected to my PC all the time.
Now two things I you should know:
First, before I did all this I connected it to my PC while turned off i.e. (PC - ON, phone - OFF). I noticed this: it was constantly connecting and disconnecting (the "piano chord" notification was coming from the computer speakers every 5 sec) like I was pulling the cable in and out. That is all I know about this, I didn't have the nerves to work on it.
Second, now that it is restored and charging, when I connected it to PC it couldn't change USB setting from Charge to MTP. It reported an error something like "service stopped". This happened only once and I did not try to do it again, I just don't have the energy for any more problem fixing right now. It charges, and I use airdroid for file transfer, that is all I need for now. If and when I get around to take a look at it I'll post here if there's something interesting.

After enabling developer options, S3 doesn't recognise USB (PC&charger)

Hello to all,
Phone is Galaxy S3 running JB 4.3 stock. I ''played'' with options, more precisely I was clicking Developer options, until the end (7 times - activate it)... because of my stupid curiosity. Now, with developer options being enabled, I'm having problems with phone doesn't recognize USB, whether I want to connect it to PC, or charge via charger.
w.w.w.youtube.com/watch?v=-qnsU1yiH_w#t=22
On this link it's showed how to disable developer options, but you can't do it on Samsung phone (!!!). I know I have to do factory reset, but before that I want to backup everything I need. The thing is that currently I'm having 13% of a battery available, and I need to fix this USB/charger issue to be able to further work. Now it's turned off (doesn't charge in this state too), because if I run out of battery I'm scared I won't be able to start it up again.
P.S. I tried to check/uncheck USB debugging... nothing happens.
I know this is a 100% software problem, and I hope you guys know the solution. Googled it earlier, no similar topic.
Thanks in advance!
Sorted it out.
But what a crazy 1-1.5 hour is behind me. First activated ''Revoke USB debugging authorization'' at Developer options. Haven't recognise USB/charger. Then went to App manager -> All -> Settings -> Force stop. Then the party began. It randomly activated handsfree, car mode and S-voice. Then it locked itself while partying in backstage. Then it couldn't recognize my drawing pattern. Don't know my pin, can't type google account because of processes pooping from behind. Shut down, took me to ''downloading do not turn off target''. I was seconds from literally reset it through the window. Then it suddenly recognized pattern, I restarted it, and now it works like a charm. In short: never do force stop, especially on Settings.
Now I'm gonna backup all, and do the factory reset. And I'll have trauma clicking on android version for some time...

Samsung Galaxy S3 Bootloop

So I rooted my International Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 about 8 months ago with CWM and started running CM 13 on it. Went smooth till about a few days ago, when I was taking some pictures using CamScanner and my phone just turns off. No message, nothing. Just goes blank instantly. Since then, it's stuck in a bootloop whenever I turn it on. I can get into both download mode and recovery currently. No nandroid backup (Extremely stupid of me, I know). And for some reason, my PC doesn't recognize my phone both in recovery and in Odin/Download mode. Thinking that it might be a bug in the ROM, I did a factory reset and flashed CM14.
PS : Couple of bits of info, dunno whether relevant, but anyway :
1. Very weak battery - Percentage fluctuates wildly.
2. I've been running Xposed for quite a while now, however, I had just installed Greenify and set most apps to force hibernate.
3. I've already wiped the cache and Dalvik cache.
4. I already had the drivers installed on my PC; I regularly used to connect my phone to it.
5.I had USB Debugging enabled when the phone went off.
6. A couple of times after the phone went off, I was able to switch it on if the charger was connected, but switched off immediately when I disconnected the charger; it was like a pc going off when you cut off the power supply - no message, nothing at all - just went blank.
7. Dunno why, but my phone refuses to charge unless I use a particular cable and hold it at a particular angle.
I've been trying to find a solution for this for the last one week, but this seems to be a unique case. Please help!
Issue resolved. Turns out, it was a battery issue

Phone charges only when turned off, when turned on USB is not even recognized

Hi,
I came across a charging problem recently (happened all of a sudden, no clue why it is happening). My phone(m2 max pro) charges only I turn it off, when turned on the USB connection is not even recognized.
So, the only way to charge my phone is to switch it off!. This appears to be not so very rare problem, there are few posts out there (with different phones) complaining the same problem, but no working solution yet.
Few things:
1. Current rom is Arrow OS(m2 max pro), Android Pie.
2. Restarting the phone with the charger connected helps. The USB will still not be recognized though, but the phone charges(although, it charges slowly, the lockscreen shows - "charging slowly").
But, If I later disconnect and reconnect the charger it won't charge anymore, I have to restart with charger connected again.
3. Tried cleaning the USB port, tried clean flashing the rom(even with a different one), did not work.
5. Tried moving/adjusting the pin in the USB port slightly (recommended in one of the posts), did not work. Although, I didn't fiddle around this much, afraid I might damage the pin/port, will try again.
6. Tried draining it off completely to 0% until it auto shuts off and then charge it until 100% (this was recommended in one of the posts), did not work.
7. Tried different USB cables and ports(including original charger and wall port), did not work. I don't think this is a problem with cables/port.
I still think this was some kind of software problem, I hoped clean flashing the rom will fix this but was surprised to see that it does not!. or is it a hardware problem?
Anyone has a fix for this or seeing same symptoms(If so, how did you get around this)?
Thank you.
This is fixed now, after caliberating the battery(with a rooted app)
-> Rooted the phone(installed magisk), wiped cache and rebooted.
-> Installed Battery caliberation app[ROOT] (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ot.superthomaslab.batterycalibration&hl=en_IN) and caliberated the battery.
-> Did a reboot and the problem went away
I didn't even had to wait until 100% to caliberate the battery (but the app recommeds so)
[EDIT]
The problem came back after a while, now its kinda randomly happening, most of the times it seems to work fine.
But, then again, it only charges, it does not recognize USB connection(to PC, which I used to connect to successfully previously), I don't see the "touch for more usb options" notification either. A workaround to this is to change the default usb configuration(in developer tools) to a different one (I am switching between File transfer, No data transfer, PTP), but as soon as you disconnect and reconnect the problem resurfaces (you'll have to again switch the default usb configuration and then reconnect)
I am perplexed!, I thought this is clearly a software issue and I hoped it would go away if I clean flash rom (the exact same build which worked fine previously, also cleared everything including vendor partition and excluding external sd card)
