I bought a Malaysian z ultra a few days ago, out the box the phone came with bravia engine, iam not sure exactly what firmware that was on. i soon updated to the latest firmware which was .257 and it came with the x-reality engine. the problem is the x-reality engine actually makes videos look much much worse than the bravia engine...i fail to see the logic of replacing bravia with x-reality. bravia only increased saturation without any sharpening, so videos looked the same natively plus the extra color boost. On the other hand x-reality makes it more saturated and adds unnecessary enhancements like sharpening making the videos look pixalated, with rough edges, very ugly indeed.
now i hear some of you saying, if i don't like x reality i should just turn it off. when x reality is turned off, the screen looses the saturation making everything appear dull and washed out. videos with x reality reality on or off dont look good.
is there anyway of downgrading firmware from .257 to something that had bravia engine. or is is there anyway of adding bravia engine and replacing the x-reality in firmware .257
Are there people who are experiencing the same issues?

IMO: these two engines are both rubbish. As soon as I do an update, the first thing I do is turn it off.
Get hold of an early FTF like .426 and then use flashtool to flash it.
If you are unsure what these mean you'll need to search and read the forum.
- When you find something out for yourself you're more inclined to remember it
Forgive my ignorance as I'm new to Sony Xperia, but are the Bravia Engine and X-Reality two different things?! I almost assume that they're just the same. lol

BE is saturation of colors and XR is saturation and sharpness, if i'm not mistaken. The sharpening looks like garbage unless you watch a nearly uncompressed 1080p video. The Smurfs video looks very nice, and that one is 100MB and 1 minute long.

Bravia engine 2 and x-reality are two different methods designed to improve image quality. bravia adds extra saturation making the colors look vibrate. x-reality does the same thing but also adds in sharpening and grain. out of the two i personally find bravia engine better as it only does one thing and that's improve colors.
Where can I check out if Bravia engine is on or not? I'm on .510 and can only find X-Reality.

We don't have Bravia Engine anymore. We had it in firmware .475 or something, but it got replaced by X-Reality.

Uhm okay, wierd.
Is it not possible to flash it back somehow? Have Sony said anything about it coming back later or why they dumped it?

who knows what will happen in future...its such a shame that they replaced bravia with x-reality seeing x-reality just makes things worse. at least if there was an option to choose saturation without the sharpening it would have been great.
For the moment there are two ways to get bravia.
1) you have to downgrade your firmware to the last version with bravia which is .475. you can accomplish this using flashtool,
2) there is one other method that i just found out but not sure how to go about doing it...that is to edit the z ultra built.prop and add in bravia 2 code. this will enable you to have both. I hav been looking through forums but hav not been able to find out any instructions on how to add both,
I couldn't stand x-reality, my eyes just could adjust to the sharpening so i downgraded firmware...using the phone without color enhancement was not an option, as i found it dull, especially since i was so used to the amoled on note 2
Thanks guys! Now I know.

I was wondering if teamBamf would be willing to code a Sony Bravia Engine mod for rezounds. The bravia codec is included in all of their ics sense roms. I'm talking to you joels. Could you write a bravia mod for twisted souls 4.0.3 senseless 2.2 release? That or finally release a full fledged bamf senseless ics 4.0.3 rezound rom.
I find your rezounds roms dope, but reminiscent of ATT bloatware, something about the included apps.
holla
keithteamzissou
it would be easier to remove the bloatware yourself or desense the rom yourself.
Does it even do anything? I've tried it out, but can't notice any difference in performance or quality and I was of the impression that nothing different was actually happening..
If there IS any difference at all, I just can't tell - so I question why go through the effort to implement it at all?
I can't tell honestly. Maybe 2 devices side by side... but I don't really know what to look for.
They say it's supposed to increase clarity/sharpness for pictures and video. If it makes any difference at all it's probably very miniscule on a HD display w/ such high PPI already.

Hey Guys - trying to decide which one to choose from - Can get them basically at the same price ...
I have tried playing around with both - main points to look at - speed and camera.
The XLWW is definitively faster - but the images taken at artifical light - seemed more yellowish (should've been white) + there was more noise and less detail. The Wildfire S on the other hand made better low-light photos but was a bit sluggish as compared to the much nicer interface the XLWW had ?
Another point is : HD video on XLWW vs 640/480 on the Wildfire S
Oh and I am really keen on the Wildfire S design (not that the XLWW is that bad but the WIldfire is better).
Which one is the better one at the end - what is your opinion ?
I would go for the XLWW. 50% of my opinion 'cause I'm a Sony Fan.

What about the other 50% What's it based on ?
I've used them both and I also recommend the XLWW, it's just better than the Wildfire.

Thanks - I think the wt19i is better myself - it's just that the camera issue is kinda important to me and the little test I made in the shop didn't convince me to take it ... I know it's a low-end phone - but still 5mp is supposed to make decent images at least.
I have had short experiences with both phones. And I would choose Sony Xperia LWW over HTC Wildfire S any day because.. its..
Newer (October, 2011 vs May, 2011).
Will soon get ICS (and this is a big one for me).
Lot more processing power (1GHz vs 600 Mhz) - this will matter a lot if you plan on keeping the phone for a while.. there is so much in the Play Store and you would want to install a lot of apps.. the more processing power, the merrier.
Music is really loud - although yes it distorts at high volumes but its awesome.. especially when watching youtube videos with friends in high noise areas).
Got a front-facing camera. I am an avid Skype user so it was a must for me.
Regarding Camera.. yes, Wildfire S is definitely better with stills.. but i would say it's a little compromise over LWW's ICS love and greater processing power. And moreover, LWW can shoot 720p videos..!
All said.. i still love to hold Wildfire S over LWW. But verdict - Sony Xperia Live With Walkman.
Hit Thanks button if I helped.
My vote for "Sony Live With Walkman", there are several reasons.
1Ghz processor
512 RAM
Start ICS 4 update this week onwards.

No, i don't think so. Xperia Neo V had some picture quality issues too with GB and it hasn't changed with ICS.
But, you can always post-process images to remove that yellowish tint.

the yellowish tint is easily removed - I would be more concerned in the loss of detail made some test photos at a shop today - compared to the wildfire s - the lww had significantly low detail when image is zoomed ...
otherwise all the rest seems much better - but I am hoping his could somehow be a software issue

Yeah indeed, its a software issue coz it overcompress images but I am not sure if there's a fix for that yet.. maybe some senior member could shed some light on that (anyone listening?), have you tried googling it..?
But even if you decide not to go for LWW, Wildfire S is still a big NO, the processor is really dated. What other phones have you considered..? Is Xperia Neo V (there is a bit price drop with the launch of Sony Xperia Sola) and HTC One V within your price range..?

actually had a look at the Neo V and the picture quality of the camera was pretty much the same - which lead me to the conclusion that the problem might be coz of the software... or a crappy camera matrix.
anyways - the lww works really like a beast with the regular rom that it comes with I was looking at it in the shop and was impressed - let alone with a custom rom - just maybe waiting on a fix for the overcompressed image - wasn't there going to be a less compressed version of the image coming with the ics ? (as a setting ?)

I truly hope this gets fixed - I see the same problem with Neo, Neo V, LWW, ARC - pretty much most of the late 2011 phones have this issue ... so until a fix is released I will be pretty much holding off.
And you won't have to wait for long.. coz ICS coming to LWW soon starting in a couple days as per the official Sony blog. Start asking around on ICS related threads.

.. and man i just realized its the android 4.0.4..! The ICS update on Neo V I was talking about earlier was 4.0.3. This time, both LWW and Neo V will get 4.0.4. And some guys here at XDA saying we will get a new kernel too.
So hopes are high again for a fix for the camera.

Hi all
when i bought the xperia Z ultra for the first time under the android 4.2, it had the best color rendering of the market. the colors vividness and the details on the viewed video's where incomparable.
I never updated till kitkat....but after the lastest updates, and that damned "white balance", the screen of my xperia Z ultra became identical to my old xperia Z, faded colors with white dominance.
do not tell me that i have just to adjust the white balance and it will be fine, it has nothing to do, and it will not change anything.
only people who have purchased or have seen the Xperia Z ultra at the time of the android 4.2 can understand me...
on this video:
youtube: panasonic beautiful girl :
at the 1:04 minute, I was able to clearly read the brand of shoe, as well as clearly see the sewing on the strings of the sandal. the colors from the beginning of the video until the end was very intence and vivid, up to turn the galaxy note3 jealous, but after updates, this is no longer possible
I thought moving from 4.3 to kitkat, sony would remedy this problem and take off this stupide "white balance" and return to the best work it has done at the beginning , but sadly, this is not the case.
are we supposed to wait for a new update that will fix this? or what is done now become our sad reality? because i bought the xperia Z ultra for it distinction against the xperia Z in colors vivacity on videos. i don't like the idea of having now just a larger xperia Z !!!
Plz can someone explain me what wrong ? Was the backlight + bravia Engin better then x-reality + triluminos ?
Ty in advance.....
Umm...Z Ultra had X Reality and Triluminos display from the start. That didn't really change you know.

Indeed. There was no change just the ability to adjust if wanted to.
Triluminos is hardware tech. One can't 'remove' it.
While I will agree that there is some difference in the display, most of it is for the good. Bravia/X-Reality on Sony and the AMOLED screens on the Samsungs make the screen oversaturated. Most probably, it is this oversaturation (not sure if this is a real word :silly you miss.

I agree, look for and turn on xreality (we never had bravia2 on the ZU) if you want [over] saturated colours
Have you unlocked the bootloader at any stage or rooted?
no never.
I have an Xperia Z ultra from Vodafone.
I can guarantee you that the difference in the display/colors on the Z ultra with the first android version is by far better VS when the mobile got "white balance" I have the old Xperia Z, and my brother has the note3, I never updated my phone from it's first version only when kitkat come.
before I update, my resolution was by far better than the Xperia Z, and for the first time, I complexes my brother who buys always samsung device (me Sony) in this area. I swear that the difference was so huge that even a colorblind will be surprised how it can be..
the Xperia ultra had better color, the RED/blue color was hilarious, all colors were more vivid and sharp vs super amoled. but now, they are exactly the same as on the Xperia Z, any difference at all, sometimes a little better on some picture, but nothing serious.
I did a side by side with an Xperia Z ultra 4.3...it had the same screen resolution as I'm now.
if someone had the opportunity of seeing the screen of the Xperia Z ultra on its first launch (when it was with black UI not white as now), he will certainly approve what I'm saying.
if only I could go back to the first 4.2 without bootloader :crying:
hi
i know that the triluminos is the new led blue color under the screen VS white used before on all TFT.
i just missed to say that i was talking about screen calibration after the 4.3/4.4 update (if u notice now the z ultra with triluminos VS the Z without it, they are no difference at all)
sorry for my bad english
hi
turning on/off x-reality does not make a big difference on all videos. on some who are full HD there is no difference at all.
I'm sure that on the 4.2, although written X-reality, it was bravia Engine2.
the real new x-reality was brough just after the update, before was only the name x-reality written to hide the old bravia engine.
X-reality doesn't oversaturate colours anymore like BE2. It only enhances the sharpness of the image and gives a little colour boost so that the colours don't seem false and hence "real"
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
can we have BE2 on the z ultra plz without root or botloader?
No you need Root or Unlocked Bootloader for it
Sent from my C6802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
but the function Triluminos, is also removed one after the root, I confirm that the audio + s-Force and all other functions for audio work properly. I could not try with the miracast and the mirror, having a compatible TV. I sincerely look a little duller colors of the icons, and seem less detailed, I have to check with another z3, I can just go to a store where it is exposed. can anyone confirm the loss of quality of the display even if the developer who did the root can give us more info about it
Just a quick question as I'm wondering if the Z2 has the same problem:
If you go into camera, put it in manual and attempt to change the ISO, do you actually see any difference in 'real time' as you look through the viewfinder/screen??
On the z1c, you don't 'see' what effect your custom iso selection has made on your photo until you bring the photo up after it's been taken.
Thanks a lot.
I believe that's only visible on the final photo because I can't seem to notice a difference.

I can't believe a bigger deal hasnt been made of this. For those wanting to shoot Manual, this is terrible!
Hello all,
I just bought a Z2 (second hand) as I wanted a phone with a high quality camera and apparently the Z2 was one of the best out there at the time of its release.
Unfortunately thus far the photos I've got from the Z2 seems pretty low quality with lots of noise and lack of detail. I've tried using manual mode and setting the ISO to 50 or 100 but the quality is still bad. Not really any different to my old cheap o Vodafone own branded phone. And the front facing camera is absolutely dreadful!
I've looked around for a solution but not found anything conclusive.
Does anyone have any advice on a way to improve the picture quality? Any particular ROMs or apps I should use. In currently on stock 6.0.1. I've read that some peoplefound that picture quality had degraded with each OS update from KK.
Many thanks

It's actually false, it has been the same way from KK,LP & MM
I tried flashing the Cyberian Mod and I've seen some slight improvements
I also bought a second hand z2. the camera was awful at first just as you described but then I saw a thread somewhere here on xda that suggests scratching off the thin coating on the lens of the z2. I scratched mine with a card and now it works great.

I don't understand the Z2 has such good reviews of the camera. I have seen some pretty good photos that other people have taken on z2s though.
I've heard that unlocking the bootloader can effect the camera, though I'm not clear whether in a good or bad way.

Some sample images...
I have just transferred some of my photos from the xperia z2 on to my PC to have a closer look, and I'm even more shocked by the awful quality. It looks like a budget phone from 2012!
I took a few sample shots using the 'Superior' Auto mode, then using the Open Camera App, then one on my old cheap-o Vodafone Smart Prime 6 so that I could compare.
Look at the attachments, they are in the order mentioned above, all at 8MP.
1. Superior Auto produces a dreadful contrasty, high-noise, low-detail image.
2. Open Camera does a better job, slightly more detail. I was unable to set the ISO in the app for some reason.
3. Old Vodafone Smart Prime 6 has perhaps slightly less sharp image, but overall is much less contrasty and produces a much nicer image, with natural looking detail.
WTF?! how is this top of the range Xperia producing images worse than a low end phone?!
Any help greatly appreciated.

Strange , i often do photos with my z2, and i have a more natural image than others. Ok in auto sometimes they are more overexposed(but very less with marshmallow). But use manual, -0.3 or -0.7 ev,esposure misuraction multiple and touch autofocus. Better than auto mode. If you mod your z2, use cyberian mod and the quality improve a lot. The version with worse camera is kitkat...orrible quality with auto mode. Then with lollipop and marshmallow, improve a lot the camera.

Hi, thanks for your response, I'm going to try and install Cyberian but first need to figure out how to root the phone and install a custom recovery. There doesn't seem to be any clear and sure-fire way...
I've looked through loads of threads and websites and they all seem to be out dated, incomplete, very vague or unstable.
Anyone know the easiest / safest method for MM .291?
Cheers!

Yeah, I've looked through that but the instructions are vague, files seem to be missing, and people have said they have had problems with it.

You must install flashtool and use some guides to flash 575 kernel. Then the guide is simple. I use often this guide ,but when i'm on recovery to flash 291 kernel and supesu, i don't flash them but a new rom. It's the best way

Where can I find the correct flashtool? Are we talking about a PC based flashtool or android based?
Thanks

Soooo.... rooted and installed Cyberian... camera is still god awful!
Is there a known issue with the z2? It seems that half of owners think the camera is brilliant and half think it's rubbish. I've seen evidence that would point towards there being a quality control issue at Sony, with a large quantity of faulty handsets being sold? (See this post, amongst others)
My back camera is definitely sub-par, performing worse than a low-end phone, and as for the front camera.... well, it looks like a blown up 0.2mp image.
Some more examples attached. They alternate rear camera, front camera.
I'm surprised Sony hasn't faced a large lawsuit around this issue.

First: use 4:3 resolution instead 16:9. 4:3 is the resolution of sensor. 16:9 pictures are worse. There is a 12 mp resolution in cyberian Who improve a lot pictures. Why did you don't try it? if this persist, control that sensor have the lens antireflex corrupted. This is second hand z2. So this is possible

I've tried all modes and they all produce pretty poor photos. These are actually taken using Open Camera which gives a significant improvement in pic quality over the stock app.
Hello, my one makes even worse photos than yours, i have the cam glass scratched, is it the problem?

See the lens if they are damged
Checked closely both back and front lenses for damage but they both look fine. The phone in general is in a 'like new' condition.
