[Q] Trouble achieving root on 4.3 ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have an SCH-i545 MDK build.
I am trying to upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3 and get root working.
On a 4.2.2 ROM, the motochopper exploit works perfectly. However, if I load a 4.3 ROM and follow the same method, when I flash the kernel to the pre-release kernel, the phone hangs and never boots. I've tried it several times with the same result, clearing cache before the process starts also seems to have no effect.
So what's the deal? Why is this happening? I know I have the right build. I went back to stock 4.2 and re-rooted using these files to make sure it would work at all. It worked perfectly. WTF? I flashed back to the stock kernel before installing the 4.3 ROM and trying again. Same deal, no booting after flashing the pre-release kernel.
Is there an updated root exploit for 4.3 that I missed?
I am following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
This is my desired 4.3 ROM: http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/downloads/dlsearch/viewcategory/582-jfltevzw

I've never seen a custom ROM that didn't come rooted. I suspect that your 4.3 ROM doesn't need to be exploited to be rooted.

Ok with the 4.3 ROM installed, it has SuperSU installed but it says my device is not rooted. SuperSU says it needs to update it's binaries.
I click install normal, it says failed. I click CWM, it never reboots. Rebooting into recovery doesn't continue the process.
Is this the ROM's fault? Should I just pick another 4.3 ROM?

I'd ask the developer of that ROM what's up.

You must go to setting, about phone, tap the build number repeatedly until developer options are granted.
Now go to settings, developer options, look for Root. Select it and choose "ADB & Apps"

[UPDATE] Stock Update Files - Slightly Modified

Some people like sticking with stock, and there isn't a huge issue with that as the stock ROM is pretty good on the Note 2. However, if you want to be stock and remained unlocked, it's quite difficult to do as every new OTA re-locks the bootloader. It's also difficult to stay stock and keep a custom recovery as it will be over-written on every boot.
Now, users that want to stay unlocked and have custom recovery have an option available. This will require you to be fully stock, if you've modified anything in /system, it won't work. The only change you can have is root, but if you've modified build.prop, the kernel, or removed any files, you need to restore. If you have any doubts, flash the alternate restore file (after extracting it) from here.
There is one other requirement for this, and that is you need a custom recovery installed. If you've unlocked, you'll already have one. If not, you'll need to be rooted and you can use ROM manager or GooManager to flash a custom recovery (after going back to stock of course).
Now you have the pre-requisites down, stock rom and custom recovery, so all you need are the files. There are two updates available, so there are currently two files to flash to be on the latest OTA. You can download them below, and installation is as simple as downloading them to your phone and installing them via recovery. If you went back to stock VRALJB, you'll start with the VRALJB to VRALL4 file, then flash VRALL4 to VRAMC3 to get to the latest system. It should be fairly easy to figure out.
If you have any errors when flashing, odds are, you did something to files in /system and caused a problem. If that is the case, start over and flash the alternate restore file and proceed from there. I'll continue to update this as new OTAs are released then as well.

It updates everything except for sboot.bin, tz.img (both bootloader files), and recovery.
hey thanks for this!
I'm on VRALJB stock, rooted and unlocked with CWM.
But I added Google Wallet working, and using a different kernel for overclock.
I tried the first update to LL4 just to see what it would say, and errored when applying the NFC.apk file, which is from the Wallet patch.
Not sure if it's easier for me to try and get the phone back to stock by restoring the original NFC files and kernel, and then try the LL4 update again, or just flash the phone with the rooted C3 ROM, but then would have to reinstall all my apps and settings.

it says you must be on completely stock rooted with a custom recovery. being you have a custom kernel is most likely the problem. anything modified in /system will cause a fail. flash back to vraljb alternate restore file, then upgrade...or boot into recovery and flash beans mc3 stock rooted .zip rom
either way you will most likely need to wipe data to upgrade...atleast thats normallya prerequisite when changing bases.

I said completely stock, and if you modified anything on /system it would fail, and you're surprised that it failed? You installed the Google Wallet hack, which modifies files on /system, and then you have a custom kernel as well, both of which will cause this to fail (as I already stated). Just be happy that the file checks were left in place and your phone still works at this point.

I knew that it wouldn't work, but have tried it just to see which error message it would show, which it stopped when it got to the NFC.apk. I know it needed to be fully stock with nothing changed in the /system.
I was just asking, at this point, would it be easier (or better) to try and get it back to stock by replacing the modified files with the original ones and try again.....or flash the modified C3 rooted ROM. I think Adam is still trying the get his root/unlock for C3 to work right for everyone.
Hey thanks for this! This'll make my wife very happy. I thought I'd have to clean install beans stock rom. She just loves stock.

I am unlocked with recovery running beans stock vramc3. I flashed the new modem afterwards. How is this different?

If I deleted a couple of apps that were pre installed after rooting, will it fail? Its all stock otherwise, rooted, custom recovery.

Not everyone is running a custom ROM. Some people are unlocked and on stock rooted with custom recovery and that's it. This is meant so they can stay up to date and remain on stock, rooted, and custom recovery.

This will be fully stock (minus recovery over-write). Beans did some other stuff to his ROM package from what I saw the last time I looked at the thread. Nothing major or groundbreaking, but it isn't as close to stock as this is.

[Q] Do I have Root or Not on MJ4????

So I've been really confused about all this MJ4 updating and such lately. My Note 3 was running a stock rooted M15. But I wanted to get these new fixes for the call quality in MJ4.
So here is what I did......
I downloaded MJ4 tar and Kernel from the Samsung updates site. I installed via Odin 3.07. It apparently updated my phone to MJ4 according to the "About Device" screen on my phone. However I was still having bad audio issues. So I ran "Root Checker" back to back 3 times while I was at work this evening and of course it said I didn't have root. So i then tried to installed the MJ4 update again via the "Updates" menu on my phone and it said I couldn't because my phone was modified.
So when I got home, I reran that tar and kernel again, with same result. So then I stared hunting around the forum for answers. I ran across a thread that said there were two ways to restore root: 1.)Install TWRP via Odin, Use a nanadroid back up and restore the rom from the M15 backup but without reinstalling the modem or 2.)install TWRP via Odin, disconnect my phone reboot into TWRP and then Flash the ChainFire SU 1.65 zip.
Well I couldnt do method 1.) because I forgot to do a nandroid before performing the update (I know....Idiot). So I tried option 2.) after rerunning the tar and kernel again. Then I tried to install Freeza's [ROM|StockRooted] 11/6/13 Sprint TouchWiz Jelly Bean 4.3 (N900PVPUBMJ4) Odex/DeOdex which of course failed.
So I then rebooted to recovery again and wiped dalvik and cache. Then rebooted my device in order to be disappointed. So I ran "Root Checker" again and low and behold , it says my device is rooted. So confused,. I ran it again and it say's I'm rooted. So I open Titanium Backup to see if I get a error and I dont. It acts as if I'm rooted.
Now key things to remember in the process:
When I initially updated to M15 I used a rooted stock version of the M15 firmware.
I NEVER wiped anything (dalvik, cache, data or system) before flashing. Also none of my data, apps, internal or external storage were wiped in this process. So all of my apps are installed and running. To answer the first question, Yes...Knox is still saying I have 0x1 void warranty.
So am I really rooted or is my system just fooled into thinking I'm rooted and how do I find out?
ANY IDEAS?
Is superuser installed? If it is just try a new app that requires root, if it asks form permission and you can grant it then you are rooted. Personally I would reflash MJ4 tar from odin. Run cf auto root from Odin and you will be on stock rooted MJ4. If you want to flash a custom ROM then flash twrp from Odin and you can then flash a ROM through twrp. Bonsai ROM is working great, freeza's stock MJ4 ROM had a couple minor issues which are ironed out with Bonsai.

Thanks for the reply bro. Yeah I was thinking to try the whole thing over again. I heard people were not able to root MJ4 with CF Autoroot right now. I just flashed a couple of mods and they worked. I also gave Superusers permission to two apps and they are working.

You should be good to go then. As long as you are happy with the ROM you have etc I wouldn't mess with it. If you do go back to stock there is always kingoroot, people seems to have good luck with that.

LOST ROOT

Phone has been fine, rooted with cwm5.5. This is wifey phone so I keep messing with it at a minimum. At some point I noticed it no longer has root. It runs stock 4.1.2. With a couple of root apps - such as AdAway-which is no longer working and has error message "Either subinary could not be found or you did not allow root permissions for AdAway"
Superuser app has this error "There are currently no superuser app policies." then "Superuser binary must be updated" attempting to update results to error "There was an error installing superuser. "
I rooted the phone again with the same CWM ver. file. attempted to flash superuser but it errored and aborted installation. I rebooted and installed rom manager so that I could update CWM. That errored out as well. Root verifier confirms there's no root on the phone. I have installed busy box but it has the same error message no root access.
I thought to root with CWM ver 6.0.4.6 but installation aborted. I tried TWRP but it aborted as well. Only CWM 5.5 works which my normal routed is then to flash superuser, install rom manager and then have it update to CWM to ver 6.xx. But his time none of these is working. How do I regain root?

When I rooted my phone I was wary of using methods that would have me going through either download mode or having to install a custom recovery (which eventually became pointless since I had to do both to flash roms anways lol) but at the beginning I was trying to use something simple.. while googling I stumbled upon this http://www.kingoapp.com/ and rooted from there.. it's like a one-click root kind of thing and seems to keep the root working regardless.. maybe you wanna check it out and see if it helps, in case you loose your root again. If you wanna run your phone stock but rooted, at least after doing the restoration via keys you'll keep the stock samsung recovery.
Hope it helps!

I know, it doesn't show our device, but I kind of went with the home page "root all devices" statement they had and it worked perfectly fine. I did the same with my sister's Note 2 t0ltetmo which is in fact a canadian Videotron phone I gave her and worked fine too. I do not believe that that Note 2 is in the list either, but it still worked

Hey it worked some - I decided to test it on my old Captivate. The only thing is it doesn't install CWM/TWRP or similar. So I cannot install a custom ROM. Is it not supposed to install a custom recovery? If not how do I do that having rooted with Kingoapp?
Thanx again for suggesting this app.

My pleasure, and glad to hear it worked! And no, lol, sorry. The app only roots your phone, but it does not install a recovery. The good thing about it is that at least you can run stock and use any rooted apps, like I do with my Asus HD7 (for which, unfortunately I haven't found either a custom recovery or a custom ROM to flash, so I run it stock but mess around with root apps)
However..
I looked into this Galaxy Captive thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547997 and didn't find a recovery itself that could be downloadble.
So while googling I stumbled upon this: http://true-android.blogspot.ca/2013/10/how-to-install-custom-recovery-in-most.html.
I my english is good enough to understand, it would seem as if the goomanager app allows u to install recoveries directly from your phone, so you could maybe try if you wish.. If u do, please let us know how it worked, as I'm sure others also would benefit from this.
If you want a CWM recovery for either the Note i717, the Note2 T889 or the S2 T989 let me know and I'll upload them, as those are the only ones I have ATM.
Cheers!

[Q] Can't boot into any recovery, phone still works

After looking through some of the threads, I think I have a slightly unique situation.
I got my S4 through swappa, and it was already on MK2. I rooted using motochopper and installed safe strap, and that worked (when booting, I could get into the options screen mess with stuff, etc). I didn't install any ROMS since there weren't any I was interested in besides cyanogenmod
In my attempt to install cyanogen mod, I tried installing another recovery, I think TWRP. That earned me the unlocked symbol when booting, and I was stuck in a weird boot loop for a while. I started researching flashing a clean ROM onto my phone, but lo and behold, it actually fixed it's own boot loop and started up again.
That was a month or two ago, before the NC5 4.4.2 update. I decided since it had resurrected itself I would just wait for a bit and see what other tools came out.
After the 4.4.2 update came out, I ignored it for a bit. I tried installing the OTA update once and it went through it's song and dance and after it rebooted it said it couldn't complete the update so nothing was changed. I assume that is because it's rooted? I didn't really force uninstall any apps, I just disabled them through the included app manager.
So where I'm at now is I'm still on MK2, I can't install the OTA update, everytime I reboot my phone I get the unlock symbol and it says "Recovery Booting..." in blue letters at the top, but it never boots into any sort of recovery.
I have tried installing safe strap again and the safe strap app says "State: Installed" but when I reboot it says that recovery booting thing, and then just boots into the regular phone. I don't see the safe strap logo or button options at all.
Where can I go from here? Ideally I'd like to get on a custom ROM that's on the rootgalaxys4 website (it won't let me post links) but I don't know if I have the MDK bootloader, or even what my recovery situation is.
If anyone could help shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated!

I actually don't have a CM base rom loaded, sorry if I made it sound like that. I am still on 4.3 stock w/ root. I wanted a CM ROM, and it seemed like I couldn't do it through safe strap so I tried to put TWRP recovery on there and I got boot-looped (which ended up fixing itself). Now I am trying to figure out how to get a recovery on there, and what my ROM options are (if I can get to 4.4.2 rooted, I would be happy).
I got the phone info program, is there any specific info you wanted off of there?
It says bootloader version I545VRUEMK2, baseband is same

Your ONLY option for recovery is Safestrap. You can ONLY install Touchwiz based Roms.
There are a lot of threads in the General and Development sections you should check out before you go any further. I would link them for you, but I'm on my way out. Good luck.

OK, well then my current problem is even though I have the safestrap app installed, and the program reports safestrap recovery as being installed, I can't access it. There is no safe strap screen while booting or button options, and even if I do the forced boot into recovery (press power+vol up+home at the same time and hold until you see the "Recovery Booting" message) it just boots to the normal phone every time.
Also worth noting is for every boot, no matter how i start it, it says "Recovery booting" at the top, but never boots into recovery. I have tried uninstalling safe strap recovery through the safe strap app and re-installing but it is the same thing.

This is really hard to follow.
You can't root MK2 with motochopper, only MDK. Try installing the "Phone INFO *Samsung*" app from the app store to figure out what bootloader and baseband you actually have.
You can't install an OTA update if critical system files are modified, so you'll need to re-flash to a stock ROM to do that. But if it's really MDK, you do not want to allow any OTAs to upgrade your bootloader.

Ah, ok, I did the root a while ago, so I think I mixed up which one I had used, I believe it was SafeRoot via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Someone earlier suggested installing the phone info app above, so I checked it and it says I545VRUEMK2 for both bootloader and baseband.
The OTA update thing was just me trying to provide as much info as possible, I don't really want to do the OTA update because it seems like it removes root, and there is no good way to get it back on NC5.
At this point I would like to install some kind of rooted ROM, but I can't get into any sort of recovery. Safe Strap says it is installed but I can't boot into it.
Would the next step be to reflash a stock recovery? Is there some way to do that?

If the two steps are:
1: Install the safestrap app (v3.71)
2: Go into the app and install the recovery.
In the app the recovery is listed as "Installed"

ok buddy you want to upgrade i take it?
click on the thread in my signature and download the 1st file listed called the COMPLETE PACKAGE it has everything you need.
you'll start tho by reflashing MK2 system through Odin then rerooting via Saferoot then reinstall Safestrap. Then the 4.4.2 ROM you want to use then reboot to Odin/Download mode and flash any of my NC2/NC5 1 File Upgrade packages. This is the easiest and most simplistic way to help you get to where you want to go. This will also keep your bootloaders at MK2 and your KNOX intact at 0x0! THE COMPLETE PACKAGE has all the modules, safestrap, supersu ect then if you have any questions the guys or me in the thread will help u. altho if you really do have CM running on your phone take screenshots I've tried porting to work with 4.3 and altho i can get two AOSP roms working I've never gotten close with CM it needs a custom kernel which is something we cannot use with our locked bootloader. only AOSP/GE Roms that will work for 4.4.2 or 4.3 are ones that are compatible with the stock 4.3 or 4.4.2 kernels theres a thread in the development section for that subject as well.

Z3v 5.1.1 Full Root

I was able to accomplish a Full Root on the latest OTA update on the phone.
Previously I was running Stock 4.4.4 KitKat with SuperSu and had issues with the OTA, since I had removed Apps.
I installed the Stock 4.4.4 ftf to the phone using the flashtool.
Then was successful in receiving the Prompt to update.
After Update, I installed. "Kingroot" for android. just google it. NOT KINGOROOT or any other.
After running kingroot, King User was installed.
In my experience, no other root method will achieve full root. I was not happy with using Kinguser, since i was a Supersu fan. But anytime I successfully removed kinguser, to swap for Supersu, I had lost partial root access, and could not uninstall apps. I could only Freeze.
I also tried Superuser, but only kinguser allowed me to fully uninstall bloatware, and other apps from the phone.
Just thought I would share.
Thanks, Iambedook. Every experience helps. Kingoroot got me into trouble once before in the past.
Can you flash back to 4.4 from 5.1.1?

I'd love to try this, but I'm kinda unwilling/aprehensious to take the chance with rooting apps. Can you confirm that you can use flashtool to revert back to 4.4? I just know Verizon would block such a thing in an update, they can be jerks. (like the moto razr maxx hd) Any insight is appreciated.

Yes, you can revert back to 4.4.4 through Flashtool. Doing so though, you will not have Advanced Calling or the refreshing Lollipop UI. Also, unless you do something about it, you will be promptly reminded all the time to update to 5.1.1.

Giga,
If I use this method to root 5.1.1., can I install dual recovery and Camera 2 and the FM tuner app? I'd also like the updated flashlight you put together but don't see that as a separate install. Should I wait or go ahead with this method for root?
Thanks, Pat

You may root, but I would advise against anything else. the Z5 Camera is most likely not compatible for our phones on 5.1.1, and neither is the FM Tuner. It's a whole lot I can't touch base on yet.

I was able to flash back to 4.4.4 after i messed things up, but after going back to 4.4.4 i am struggling to get back to 5.1.1. The updates are not appearing, stating I am at the latest version.
I would also like a confirm if this. Because I'm sitting around and waiting for a rooted 5.1.1 copy for the phone. Im on 5.0.2 right now and all is working good but still waiting. Thanks all.
I'm going to see if I can root after upgrading to 5.1.1, but I have the stock firmware just incase.
Just uploaded a rooted twrp backup with real superuser ++++much more

Just an FYI, after I needed to revert to 4.4.4. I was struggling to receive updates to get back to 5.1.1. I had to use the Flashtool, 3-5 times to get the correct update prompts to appear. If anyone else had similar issues when reverting back, let me know, but re flashing repeatedly worked for me.

Just scroll down to the z3v dev section.
I was actually able to flash the stock ftf coming 5.0.2. I had to flash it with default options the first time with it failing. I then found that I have to basically flash noting to clear the error on the phone by checking everything in exclude and the other exclude box where it shows its not displaying any files in the middle of the window.
Once that went through, I was able to upgrade from stock to .44 and then the the two updates for 5.1.1. After all that I reset to factory again to test on rooting the phone. I was too, able to obtain root with King Root. I was able to install zxrecovery and xposed with no problems. I'm actually used to King Root as I had to use it on the Verizon branded 7" tablet that didn't have any other possible methods previously. I also found that Busybox was slightly out of date (difference of 2.0) and installed to /sbin which wasn't too big of an issue.
Beyond that my phone seems to get pretty warm and typically complains about not charging even on a 2 Amp charger.
Can you tell me how you avhieved root because i want it but i can't revert to kitkat for some reason (flashtool won't recognise the update file) and I'm on lollipop. I've tried kingroot(app version) and it didn't work, tried reverting didn't work and tried all the framaroot, towelroot and such apps but none worked. I want working root, xposed and twrp. I can't find any way to do it please help.

Try King root again. I used their apk on the phone. It rebooted once at 30%, but when I got back in the app after the reboot, it successfully rooted the device.

Thats why then. This is only for the Z3v the Verizon variant.
Hi there,
New to the forum. After several hours of reading and searching, I became bewildered enough to decide to register and post .
This thread looked promising. I'm currently on rooted 4.4.4 with this phone. I also have a custom recovery installed. Im trying to get to 5.1.1. As of right now, I assume my only option is to wait for a 5.1.1 ftf so that I can update, because the OTA updates won't work (phone reboots into the custom recovery and the update is interrupted).
Is there an easier way to get the OTA? Or am I stuck waiting for an ftf?
To be clear, my goal is to be on 5.1.1 with root. But at this point I don't think I can get to 5.1.1 at all.
