Phone freezes, reboots, or does "nothing" at all when moving app/s to SD Card
Ah, the age old problem with moving apps.
I recently found my way back to a PA, AOKP, CM ROM (Jellybam).
Unfortunately, I have some nerve damage in my hand. Since the invention of the 4.2 JB keyboard, I've been able to use my Note more frequently, and thoroughly. There are various reasons why I need to use this ROM in particular, one of them being that customizability is a necessity, and Roms like Avatar, Chameleon, and PACMan just aren't there yet, either in performance, or stability. I spent the whole day looking for an alternative, but none came closer to meeting my needs, while still being callable of daily driving.
My issue is, I have a large collection of apps, and I'm leaving for vacation. Many of them hold an extremely large cache of offline data, while others are games that have 100+APK files, and 1-2GB of OBB or other SD Data. I still have a ton of apps I need to install, and the inherent 2gb limit of Android is seriously going to make my life tough. My family is counting on me for maps, itinerary, and even entertainment.
These apps could easily be installed if I could simply move a dozen or so of the largest apps, and a dozen or so of the medium sized apps to the SD card.
However, upon clicking the "Move to SD Card" button in the app info panel, one of a few things happens. The button might Greg out, and say "moving" for hours, and never get there, the phone could freeze, requiring a reboot as soon as I try to back out, hit the home button, or do anything except scroll; or the phone might freeze and reboot, or just reboot immediately upon clicking the move button.
Occasionally, I'll be successful. I've tried clearing a the data from a few system apps, like "Media Storage", and I'm not sure if it worked or not, but over a period of around ten restarts, I managed to get three apps transferred to the "SD Card", although they definitely were not the apps I needed to move. The ones I managed to move were ones I chose at random while I flashed several kernels, root .zips, recoveries, mods, etcetera. They were all less than 25mb.
I'd owe you forever, and would be willing to assist you on a project, or finding a fix for some of your own technological ailments, if you can help me with this.
A search of XDA, and Google's hive-mind brings up a couple thread where the issue is discussed, but those were from years ago, and only one was on the same ROM as I am, and that thread was deleted--all that remains was a description and the details of it in the search index.
So, a penny for your thoughts? Even if you don't have anything concrete, the discussion, suggestions, and conversations might help.
Mad thanks all around.

So, after some more screwing around, I found that indeed, clearing the data for the "Media Storage" app temporarily fixes the problem for all but 2 minutes. I'm woefully unprepared to understand the app-- particularly whether it's a contaner of sorts for media thumbnails, tags, etc...or...whateer....the...other....option.....is.....
I suppose i'll try pulling a TiBu Pkg of a "Media Storae" app from another ROM, import it into this one, and fire it up.
Before i cleared it, the app had 27mb of data and cache, and aftered i cleared it, it slimmed down to 7. Within a minute or two, it was back up to 27mb, and my phone was freezing on the transfer of apps to my sd card again.
Possibly your phone is just too low on memory and you don't have enough memory to do the move to sd card. Try temporarily removing some apps and then move your big ones and all that you can and then install the apps back.
Or you could backup a few apps with TB that you don't use much which will free up some memory. Then when you need the app use TB to restore it quickly.
Cache can be a killer. Just removed a little over 200MB of cache files myself this morning. Try a good cache cleaner like "Clean Master."
If your phone is loaded with media files then your media data will be that high. Sounds like to me your phone is simply overloaded.
Gooday guys,
I've got serious troubles at the moment. 2 days ago I wanted to show a picture to a friend of mine. Opened my gallery > ehm, what is going on here? > there were no photos images anymore.
First I thought that the gallery app got some problemes, rebooted my phone, still the same. Looked up the folders with Solid Explorer, well ... all files got definitely deleted.
I searched for this here on xda and google. Well, all I found out was that it could be ROM related, or that it could have something to do with RomManager (haven't installed it though). The curious thing is that the *.jpg and *.mp4 files got deleted from all folders and subfolders, not only from DCIM and even from the sd card.
I'm not here for any recovery attempts, have done this already
Well this is not all. I've got some *.avi files on my phone (internal and external storage). Theses files were deleted too. BUT not at the same day as the other media files (*.jpg and *.mp4).
So this is the pre story. Now I wanted to know what can I do to discover what is causing this problem, because what's next? Is my phone deleting all my files in a few days?
For me it seems like a script that is searching the whole device for media files and deleting them. (malicious?)
My thoughts were:
to smali all applications and try to find out if a app is causing this
to analyze logcats
Well, These options seems to be very long-lasting, so I ask you if somebody have any ideas on this?
Information about my phone
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300)
ROM: ParanoidAndroid v3.68
Kernel: Googy-Max v1.5.9
I haven't isntalled any apps or updates the last two weeks so I think there are no problems with apps and therefore will not list them.
tldr;
phone is deleting media files
two days ago it deleted *jpg and *.mp4 files from internal and external storage and from all folders (not only DCIM)
today it deleted *.avi files from internal and external storage
could it be a malicious script that is crawling my phone for those files?
how can I find out what is causing this problem?
I hope that somebody could help me *pray pray*
thanks a lot in advance!
Wish you guys a nice weekend
John
Sounds like a nasty software bug
Oooooooooooooo NOT fun! I have seen this before (first time on the S3 though). Sounds like a nasty software bug. Sometimes you can fix this and sometimes you cannot.
What you NEED to do is backup ALL of your phones information. I recommend that you back it ALL up to a computer, even your memory cards information as well.
Then wipe that device clean with a Factory data reset. This will set the phone back to its default settings and will be like a brand new phone.
You might also want to consider formatting your SD card at the same time. Just in case whatever is causing this issue is coming from your Memory Card.
Afterwards I recommend that you try using your phone without any 3rd party applications for a couple days, just to make sure it’s not a bad app causing trouble.
If the phone is still acting up and erasing things then you should file a warranty claim as soon as possible.
Good luck John.

Quick Question regarding remote wipes and overall security of the phone's data in case of a loss/theft
Background story:
On New Year's Eve my good friend's iPhone 5S got stolen out of his pocket in a crowded club.
So I lent him my phone and we logged into iCloud using the Chrome Browser and triggered the wipe of the iPhone.
I offered him to call the credit card company and such if he had delicate data stored on the phone. But he refused...he trusts Apple's iCloud wipe routine and said he tested it at home and the phone was completely empty after that.
And he was surprisingly calm during the whole situation.
Okay he pays for insurance that covers a stolen phone, but I would have totally freaked out about my data...account logins, stored files and pictures, evernote notes, dropbox files etc.
My experience with the Android remote wipe:
Last evening I wanted to give it a try on my Android phone. So I pulled all the data that was on my phone and performed a nandroid-Backup of the system-files within TWRP and backed up my apps and data using TitaniumBackup.
And then I tried the Android Device Manager, which I had activated since it got released somewhen 2013, but never really tested more than the "localize" and "ring phone" functions.
Just yesterday I noticed the new "lock screen" function. Which is great, but I have always been using pattern locks anyway (triggered by Tasker, if my Wifi is not near). It's still nice to have and works like a charm (if the phone is connected to the internet).
So in addition I ordered my phone to get wiped. And it did what it said...it booted into Recovery and performed a factory reset / full-wipe.
But still all the data on the virtual sdcard was accessible after entering the SIM's pin code (I assume switching SIMs wouldn't change that) and setting up a new user profile. I know that it displays a warning that sdcards might not be wiped, during the process, but I thought this was referring to additional physical "microSD" storage. How wrong I was.
So all my pictures and stored files were fully accessible from the new user account.
If you store your unencrypted TitaniumBackup files on there the thief could easily restore them.
So encrypt them!
I was a bit shocked, to be honest.
And especially the fact that someone can access my phone's files without even knowing the lockscreen pattern/pin by simply booting into recovery bugs me.
Does encrypting the phone help in this situation?
Are there any drawbacks? I guess the speed and overall performance will decrease?
How can I protect the Recovery (I've got a HTC ONE, which is S-OFF'd and the bootloader unlocked via htcdev.com)?
Should I reflash the stock-recovery after flashing a CustomROM to at least make the thief require to reinstall the custom-recovery?
What other ways are there to protect the phone's data?
I don't let ADB turned on. (But this doesn't affect getting into recovery by rebooting.)
I don't keep nandroid/TitaniumBackup Backups on the phone. I pull them immediately onto a local computer after creation and delete them on the phone.
...what else?
To me booting the phone into recovery, hooking it up to any computer and using ADB to pull the sdcard's files is the most concerning security loop-hole. What am I saying...it's a shining and welcoming entrance with neon-signs all around it like a casino.
And exactly this is what taking my phone with me feels like, after the experience described above: GAMBLING...
Thanks in advance!
Every hint is very welcome
PS: If you want to try the wipe with the Android device manger yourself, be prepared that restoring the nandroid-Backup won't be possible! After a short while the phone will reboot itself and get wiped again.
The only way to restore the phone's former state was to restore the apps backups using TitaniumBackup in my case. Unfortunately some settings won't get restored, so I had to reenter all my mail accounts.
Just be prepared that it takes some time
PPS: I already posted this in the thread of the ROM I am currently using. Obviously no one didn't care over there So I thought the question might be to broad and ROM-unrelated. Hence the repost here.
No one?
Greetings!
I recently received a replacement refurbished Nexus 4 from my carrier. All went well until I discovered some rather disturbing images that I did not care to see. Now these images were not listed in the gallery app or folder structure by any means. I discovered them by trying to change my wallpaper by Long pressing the home screen and selecting "Pick Image" and it would bring up this browser window. Said images showed up under "Recent" section. So I figured, ehhh the phone must have not been factory wiped the way it should have. Did a factory wipe through settings. They still showed up under this "Recent" section after the reset. Upon further investigation, they seemed to somehow link to Google Drive. While I was sure I did not have these images in my drive, I was concerned. Anyhow I selected one of these images and checked its info, it has modify dates of earlier this year, under permissions and activity it showed another individuals name / email address. Weird Some of these file seemed to have a naming scheme, so I did a search in the Google Drive App and found tons of junk. All which have the same owners name under it.
So LOLLIPOP for nexus 4 released today and I went ahead and flashed it hoping it would clear this junk/cache out? Nope.
I decided to open up the wallpaper browser thing before even mapping MY DRIVE and sure enough this garbage is still showing up.
I even went as far as removing ALL FILES from my Google drive on the desktop to ensure this junk was not on my drive. Still shows up.
I suspect that there is some kind of cache stored on the internal storage that is not touched when flashing a new Image.
Anyone have some suggestions on how to clean this thing out?
I want to upgrade my non-rooted phone to a new model (specifically, from an HTC M8 to a M10), but I would like to try to transfer as much as the settings/data from my old phone as I can.
It's not rooted (though I plan to root the new one immediately) so that really limits my options.
First of all, would restoring an adb backup to the new phone be a bad idea? Obviously I wouldn't use the -system switch, but would even restoring general data and/or apks this way be a bad idea? If so, are there any better methods one can recommend to backup my app/settings data and restore it to a new phone? I don't mean just stuff like contacts or SMS.
And second, I always use a SD card to store my photos, but after it being in this phone for a few years there are a lot of deleted photos, which results in situations where I would have files like photo0012 photo0013 photo0016 with "gaps" between the file numbers. Since most camera software writes to the first available "number" my photos are going to be a scramble of new and old once I start using them on my new phone. Any good (preferably on PC) apps or recommendations on how I can rename them all in order based on the date they were taken so there won't be any "gaps"?
Should this have been posted on a specific phone's forum? It seemed like a general question to me.
