i wanna get s-off and root on my wife's phone using the revolutionary method so she doesn't lose any data, problem is that I can't get the HTCDriver3.0.0.007 on my windows 7 machine to open up, i get a windows popup that asks is it ok to run this file, i hit 'ok', then that's it, setup never starts. so when i try to run revolutionary, i get stuck at the 'zerging root' step. apparently it won't get past that step until after i get that htcdriver to install.
i've made sure the phone was in usb debugging, updated windows, tried to download that same exe from other sites, and still nothin.
anybody have an idea of what to do
There's no point bothering to run Revolutionary until you get the driver installed....
Are you logged in with admin privileges on Windows ? Is a User Access Control window popping up that you don't see and aren't responding to ?
You could use HTC sync to get the drivers that's what u did...

i thought htc sync had to be disabled in order to use revo though
Sync does have to be disabled, but I think what Revos means is install the sync and connect your phone. It should at that point automatically install the htc driver for your specific device. Then remove the HTC Sync and leave the driver.

Don't the instructions at revolutionary.io say exactly that ?
how could i uninstall sync and not uninstall the driver with it
The installer from HTC includes multiple pieces that show up individually in Add/Remove Programs. Easiest thing is to try it...

i FINALLY got it! i reinstalled htc sync, it was over 100 mb. then deleted it. after that, i plugged the phone in and mounted it as a disk drive, so it installed whatever drivers it needed. then mounted it as htc sync; windows installed more drivers. then i set it to charge only, enabled usb debugging and ran revolution again, and it finally worked. she's rooted!! thanks!!!
Same thing was happening to me when I was tryin to root my mom's Thunderbolt. Couldn't get past the "Zerging Root..."
So contrary to what all the guides say, I installed HTC Sync, it installed all it's pre-requisites during the install, UPDATED HTC Sync to latest version, it updated all the pre-reqs again, mounted phone to computer as a disk drive, waited for drivers to install, mounted phone to HTC Sync, waited for all drivers to install, confirmed that HTC Sync was communicating the phone, set phone as Charge Only, waited for drivers to install, unistalled HTC Sync, ran Revolutionary, waited a minute, it FINALLY got past Zerging Root!
Hope this helps anyone else who has been tearing their hair out over this issue...
Alternate solution for rooting with latest ota...if you have locked bootloader
For those of you that have endured the frustration of updating to the latest software version (2.11.605.9) There is hope! Apparently with this software version, the bootloader is locked. And for some reason this version would not allow the "Revolutionary" rooting method to work. (I would imagine everyone with this problem had issues with not being able to get past Zerg Root. At least that was the problem I had)
Anyways, I got my phone rooted....heres how.
Per the instructions for using Revolutionary, install the driver as stated on their website. (Make sure HTC Sync is not installed on your computer)
Download Mecha_2.11.605.3.zip (I'm a newbie here so I cant post links, but I found it through Android Police but if u google it its easy to find, its hosted on multi upload) rename the zip file as PG05IMG and put on the root of your SD card (as you would in other rooting methods) and run the bootloader.
Once its booted and all that fun waiting is over and your TB powers back up, make sure to turn off all wireless connections to make sure OTA doesnt try to upgrade you. (I turned on airplane mode as soon as I could)
From there run Revolutionary as instructed from their website. Worked like a charm for me, and hope it does for all of you with this same problem.
I TAKE ABSOLUTELY NO CREDIT FOR THIS SOLUTION. Thank you for all you developers out there that make our phones able to be so much cooler and more enjoyable. I'm just glad I could help in this marginal way, and hope that someone will find it usefull. SPREAD THE WORD IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM

This app does it all for you, just follow the instructions.
This is the 3rd time i have tried S-off my Evo V. To be honest, idk why i am bothering with it because the radio issue is annoying but it fixes itself within a minute or two.
But i'm unlocked via HTC dev, i'm rooted and i am using JMZstock odex rom and i am following the directions here(at least i think i am)

I run controlbear...it does it's thing...after it finds the fourth file, it reboots the phone and then loads for 45 seconds
and then it keeps saying
Hmm, still no device
Open device manager and check adb and/or fastboot drivers!!

I am using a Windows 7 laptop....i read somewhere to try a different USB port and i have 3 and i've tried all 3 but i have no clue what to do.
Do you have USB debugging enabled in settings? Also if you have HTC sync installed on your PC uninstall it. Also iTunes if it is on there. These programs will interfere with the wire trick process. Make sure your stock ROM with superuser too.

Yeah i had the usb debugging enable and i uninstalled HTC Sync and for good measure i also got rid of Motodrive/Moto cast and Samsung Kies from when i had my razr and gs3.
I have no clue what is going on though and why i get stuck after it finds the 4th device.
There is a specific version of controlbear for Evo V (VM), use that.
Also, you need an RUU for your device in order to S-OFF.
None of the other ROMs will work for Evo V.
I'm trying to use moonshine to root my dna. It's on firmware 2.06.605.1 710RD, completely stock and unrooted. USB debugging is on, it's connected to the computer, and fastboot is unchecked. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit, and I followed the instructions to the letter:
Settings on phone (fastboot, usb debugging, no lock) set exactly to how the instructions described.
I downloaded the correct file on the moonshine download page.
I unzipped the file and kept all the moonshine files in the same directory.
I allowed distiller in my firewall.
I had an internet connection.
I triple checked that I did not have HTC Sync Manager installed (it wasn't).
I ran distiller as administrator.
The process runs fine until the second time it puts the phone into bootloader mode:
(see attached picture)
Distiller prints dots, one every second, starting a new line every minute, I assume (note: these dots will print as long as the program runs. I let it print about half a line to show where the program freezes). My phone remains on the bootloader screen. I can quit distiller and reboot without bricking the phone or anything, but it always freezes at this point. At first I thought it was an issue with the usb 3.0 port, so I switched to the 2.0 port on the same computer, but I got the same output. I have the android sdk installed, and the initial adb and fastboot checks run fine. I can't figure out why this won't work. Should I just try this from a linux live cd?
Also, when I connect my phone, not only is the phone mounted, but also two drives called "CDROM" and "HTC Sync Manager". There is no way that I know of to keep these from automatically mounting. I can eject them, but as soon as the phone reboots they are mounted again. I have never installed HTC Sync Manager on this computer, so it's on the phone. I don't think that's what's causing the problem, though, because the first part of distiller runs fine with both CDROM and HTC Sync Manager mounted.

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but I got errors on moonshine until I factory restored my phone, powered it off, plugged it into the computer and then powered it on and then ran moonshine, after that it worked perfectly.

Revone's just s-off, though, right? I'd like to get root too, if I can.
So, I tried the linux route. I got past the place where I was stuck last time, but after "moonshining" for a half second I get an error: "WTF: What are you doing?" I saw I had accidentally been using a USB 3.0 port, so I tried it on a 2.0 port, but I got the same error in the same place. The second time, the phone stayed on the droid splashscreen for a few minutes, then rebooted missing every single widget and app shortcut.
I had already backed up everything I needed, so I did a factory reset and tried again on Windows. Same error in the same place. How can I get past the WTF error?
Edit: On Windows, it's the same error with the dots, not the WTF error. I only get that on Ubuntu.

ok first off big thanks to Beaups and Zanzibar for their patience in IRC..
After troubleshooting some, all we had to do was turn off windows firewall and antivirus. After that, no hangups! GL guys.
WTF Error
I also get the "WTF: What are you doing" error while moonshing.
Running Windows, tried two cables, attempted 4 times. Correct firmware, no htc sync installed.
Has anybody found anyway to get around the WTF error?

Try turning off AV and firewall. There are many threads troubleshooting the Moonshine errors.You can find them with the search feature in the forums.
So basically moonshine is the only option if you take the ota to get s-off. so i have all the drivers installed and and start moonshine and it all goes good until it says rebooting into bootloader <again> waiting for fastboot <9/60> then instead of going to the next step it makes dashes (-) that fill up the comand promt and my phone is in the fastboot menu. I let it do that for about An hour *and I've tried multiple times. Any ideas ?

Additional info running windows 7 phones on 4.1.1 with the 2.06.605.1 710 RD update, usbdebug is on fastboot is off. Phone is fully charged. Htcsync is uninstalled and im using usb 2.0 with factory HTC cable.
Try different drivers (pdanet) and disable your firewall and antivirus. I tried everything 2 with moonshine. I was so frustrated. Took me a whole day to finally work. Disabling firewall, anti virus, and loading different drivers finally worked!!!!!
BTW I was stuck in the EXACT spot where your having trouble!
Also.....after each unsuccessfully try reboot your phone and reattempt

Uninstall any HTC drivers and just plug the phone in and let it build drivers directly from the phone.

Tried all that except the pda drivers and the firewall. Going to give it a go tomorrow thanks it is driving me crazy and it helps to have someone else's input so i really appreciate it.
MoonShine didn't work for me. Try RevOne. If that doesn't initially work try omitting the -P switch in the first step and continue.
if it fails grab a ubuntu 32 bit live cd and use those instructions it took me about 10 minutes to do mine since it reboots the phone about 20 times lol.
Alright I used revone and finally got s-off unlocked but I tried flashing twrp and it hangs when trying to enter recovery. It says enteringrecovery and I have to hold power to reboot it.

Use goo manager app to flash it l, that's what I did and twrp works perfectly.

moonshine works
plug your usb cable into a port directly on the mobo, be sure you have installed all of the HTC drivers(remove the sync program and any other HTC programs), makes sure your adb is up to date.
The first night i did it, it didnt work and I kept getting the WTF? What are you doing? error.
2nd night, made sure adb and drivers installed(restart pc), used port on modo instead of hub, changed screen timeout settings to 10 mins instead of never, (ran adb.exe as admin), ran moonshine as admin(win 7x64) and it worked. I screenshot the results if ud like to see.
Hey guys I'm trying to unlock the boot loader through the all in one toolkit but it keeps saying device not find! All drivers installed correctly and the phone is being picked up through mass storage and connects to computer fine. I also have sdk tools installed and HTC drivers installed but the tool kit still didn't find phone. Also I run ADB devices and it didn't show up. Any ideas?

Did you try closing HTC Sync Manager?
Make sure and exit completely, right click and exit in the system tray

Not sure it would matter since you're running commands from ADB but did you turn off fast boot in the power options? Also, I know there's a tool somewhere here on XDA where you can remove all of the android drivers and start fresh. I want to say it's called USBDeview. It was part of the WugFresh nexus 10 toolkit. I used the tool to get rid of all my samsung drivers and also HTC drivers so I could start fresh
Here's a link to the toolkit. Try using the driver installation guide there, it has the tool in it I used to get rid of all the android devices to start fresh.

well thats the problem. ADB isnt recognizing the phone but the rest of the computer is.

umm, did you enable developer options and enable usb debugging? if you type adb devices and nothing shows up, its not going to work. You should learn how to do it all manually anyways. It could save you in the future. Go to htc dev site and it walks you through it for windows and mac. VERY easy. You need to learn to use fastboot commands. Msg me if you can't get it done.

Right, and I guess I'm saying that it may be worthwhile to try cleaning out your drivers and then starting from scratch with HTC driver and android interface driver. When I cleaned out mine I had several duplicated. After removing them I was able to connect to my device just fine. I can't think of another reason why your device wouldn't connect

ive never had any problems with command ADB DEVICES showing the connected device until this phone. I CANT use htcdev because it makes me download some file called "fastboot-win.zip" and after extracting it wont opne and gives me error message of some missing file which is indeed not missing. And dont you need ADB when you get the unlock token anyway? never had this type of issue before.

there is no other drivers showing up other than HTC's. and ive reinstalled it at least three times. everything is working except ADB recognizing the phone.

You must enable usb debugging to use adb on htc. go, settings, about and click on build like 10 times until it says developer options, then go to settings/developer options and turn on debugging. adb will not work on stock rom unless you do this.
Do you have the fastboot application in addition to the ADB application in the directory from which you are running commands? You absolutely need fastboot to get your unlock token.
Also just to clarify, what exactly does it say when you try to run ADB commands? Simply "device not found?"

thats already checked. just unistalled all duplicate drivers and started fresh. now there is 3 drivers not installing. CDC serial, Android phone, and CDC serial again. not sure why that one installs twice but it failed anyway..those 3 will not install for the life of me.

in the toolkit it says "device not found"..when i run ADB devices it says "list of devices" but shows nothing. Now when i run the command it says in missing some .DLL extension file
Reboot your computer, install HTC sync manager again, then plug in your phone and drivers should install properly. But of course uninstall or close sync manager before you start running commands again
newest adb? usb 2 port? I have a mac so its a little different, but i had to update my adb when kit kat came out.

ok i followed your instructions and yes all the drivers installed correctly, thank you. BUT now i run the toolkit and now it says "error: device offline".

not sure. i dont keep ADB on my computer. I download it only when I need to. But i followed the instructions from the other user but now i get this message. "error: device offline".
Do you get the same result when you run 'adb devices' in command prompt? Also uncheck verify apps and unknown sources in security. And I just want to make absolute certain you have usb debugging enabled once more

ok so i ran the toolkit for the 3rd or 4th time and it rebooted in fastboot to obtain my token to unlock. but when i enter the token into htcdev website it keeps saying its wrong length. i checked over and over and its the right length and im copying what i see from the htc dev website instructions but three times i get wrong token length.
ok i got the code to work..now onto the next step.if i have problems ill be back here.
