Verizon Galaxy s4 MI1 update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys, just some things I've been curious about lately. I just updated to MI1 and rooted it. Is there any way to download safestrap and install custom ROMS such as CM 10.1? Can maybe give me the link to a YouTube video showing me how to flash roms with safestrap? Someone please confirm (or deny) affirmatively whether or not I can flash specifically CM and if not, what about any other ROM? I would probably prefer the stock 4.3 ROM over anything

you can not use cm roms or any 4.3 has to be 4.2

But 10.1 is 4.2.2

You can only use stock kernel with safe strap and cm has there own kernel so it won't work

What about AOKP or the stock 4.3 ROM?

TW only. Stock kernel only.

Are there any AOSP based ROMS that allow use of the stock kernel? If not, are there plans to show custom kernels in SS?

It is impossible for an AOSP rom to be based on the stock kernel. There is a list of safestrap compatible roms in the general section, I would suggest Eclipse as it has AOSP styling.
Kexec support is being worked on which will enable custom kernels, but its going to take a long time.

Wow, I only like AOSP based ROMS. Is there any way at all to flash CM or AOKP onto my rooted S4?

Not if you have ME7 or MI1.

Why is it that I could flash with MDK and not with newer versions? Something with kernels?

That's because the bootloader in the S4 is locked, and will not boot an unsigned recovery (i.e. an official one from Samsung.)
There's a bug in the MDK bootloader that allows bypassing that check, which allows a custom recovery to be installed and booted.
That custom recovery then allows you to install whatever ROM you like.
Releases after MDK have that bug fixed so there's no way to use a custom recovery. Safestrap allows you to start a custom recovery by using the standard kernel to get Safestrap loaded and started up. Since it's not running on the bare metal of the phone, Safestrap can't overwrite the bootloader or kernel, so you can only use ROMs that work with the standard kernel.
Eventually, if kexec gets working, Safestrap will be able to host nonstandard kernels, making many more ROMs possible.

That is sweet because I really want to try CM or AOKP. I will probably like AOKP better but who knows. Can I expect this update allowing for custom kernels soon?

Who knows? That's why I said "if kexec gets going". If the devs can't figure out how to boot a custom kernel, Touchwiz-based ROMs are it.

Oh okay. Thanks a lot though hopefully kexec does get going cause I'm not a big fan at all of touchwhkz

ME7 safestrap kernels?

So I am on ME7 and have Hyperdrive. Ive tried 4 different kernels but each one has broken my wifi. Only by reflashing hashcodes module was I able to fix it. Are there any modded kernels available for us ME7 safestrap users that work?

Not exactly what I'm looking for. I've been in that forum and I'm wondering specifically about using Roms like the Liquid Smooth 4.3 AOSP on ME7.

[Q] Android 4.3/4.4 question.

Is it possible to go to one of the updates without losing the mdk baseband. I still have it but would like to use the newer versions when they are out.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
That's a good question. I want to be able to use those newer updates too. You can however right now install 4.3 without updating your build and still be on MDK so maybe it is possible. I'm using LiquidSmooth ROM and its on 4.3. I recommend it if you're looking for a 4.3 ROM.

We've had ROMs based on 4.3 for months (CM10.2 nightlies have been coming out since what, August?), and I guarantee you there will be customized versions of 4.4 long before Samsung cobbles something together based on TouchWiz. And no custom ROM will ever re-lock your bootloader; it's just Samsung's official updates you have to worry about there.

Then it's really not "running" is it?
As off now, it's not possible to run AOSP roms with Safestrap.

Riker, If you actually looked at the ROM you will see that it is not AOSP. It is themed very well. C'mon man!

My bad. Saw AOSP and just assumed. I don't pay attention to any rom that isn't specifically for Verizon.

Did you flash the proper kernel package afterwards? The kernel packages Hashcode provides contain the modules needed for data to work. Even if the installer installs a stock kernel itself, you need this special SafeStrap-compatible kernel in order for it to work.
Head over here to get it, then flash it in SS and reboot.

[Q] Safestrap and AOSP

Why do AOSP ROMs not work with Safestrap?

Because the bootloadet is looking for the stock legit firmware signature., without unlock we can't change the stock I'd OR tell it don't look for stock Id anymore. This is simpliest explanation.

Well, until kexec gets figured out, safestrap only allows us to use the stock kernel... which only lets us run touchwiz. If we could run other kernels, AOSP wouldn't be out of reach.
